# Got better or worse over time, and update cadence (`vendor.updates`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/vendor.updates

Area: [Dealing with the vendor](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/vendor.md)

**Definition.** The post compares the agent with an earlier time or names an update: features shipped quickly, or the agent got worse or better after a change. An explicit comparison with the past, or a named update, is required.

**Boundary.** Not this: use general.unspecific for a verdict with no comparison over time and no update named. Not this: see [Outages, errors and agent going unresponsive](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/vendor.uptime.md) for temporary outages. Not this: see [Usage allowance size, exhaustion and reset wait](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.usage_cap.md) when an update changes the allowance.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1840. Complaint share: 66%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Grok Bot and Hermes Agent are best at updates that improve the agent. Their users say new releases arrive often and make the agent faster, smarter and easier to use. This is the 10th most rated of 53 criteria, and 65.9% of the user-weeks that rate it complain. OpenClaw and ChatGPT Dots rank low. OpenClaw users say updates break a working install. They rate this 4.73 times as often as other users and write 59% of the category's complaints here. ChatGPT Dots users say the agent got worse after recent changes.

### What separates the best from the rest

Grok Bot users describe update packages almost every day that fix small problems and make the app feel smoother. Hermes Agent users say usability has improved a lot, and that a new stable branch lets them update only when they need to. OpenClaw users describe upgrades after which the gateway will not start, and some say they now stay on an old version. ChatGPT Dots users say their agent was "nerfed", or stopped following instructions after a desktop update.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is an update that breaks a setup that used to work. It covers 43% of complaining user-weeks, and 81% of those come from OpenClaw users. OpenClaw users also account for 67% of complaints that the update itself fails or stalls. Complaints that the agent got dumber are spread across OpenClaw, Grok Bot and Muse. Hermes Agent users account for 51% of complaints that releases come too fast to follow.

1230 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Update breaks a previously working setup | 532 | 614 | OpenClaw 429, Hermes Agent 90, Grok Bot 5, Muse 5, ChatGPT Dots 2, Gemini Spark 1 | After a named update or upgrade, an existing install stops working: the gateway crash-loops or won't start, migrations or doctor fail, config is rejected, or memory, databases, channels, keys, skills or agents are lost or need manual repair or rollback. Out of scope: a working install that just got less capable, slower, or lost a feature on purpose. |
| Agent got dumber or less reliable | 188 | 198 | OpenClaw 60, Grok Bot 52, Muse 29, ChatGPT Dots 16, Hermes Agent 16, Poke 14, Hark 1 | The post says the agent's intelligence, task success or reliability has dropped compared with an earlier period or model version (for example "nerfed", hallucinating more, failing tasks it used to handle), without saying the install broke. Out of scope: crashes or setup breakage caused by an update. |
| Update mechanism fails, stalls or is slow | 171 | 188 | OpenClaw 115, Hermes Agent 52, Grok Bot 2, Muse 2 | The update process itself won't complete: it fails with an error, freezes, takes hours, works only from the CLI, or misses part of the product, apart from whether the result later runs. Out of scope: updates that install fine but break the setup afterwards. |
| Update removes features or changes behaviour silently | 124 | 127 | OpenClaw 39, Hermes Agent 34, Grok Bot 29, Gemini Spark 11, Muse 7, ChatGPT Dots 3, Hark 1 | An update takes away a capability, provider, integration, setting or bit of configurability users relied on, or changes behaviour or defaults (such as ads or restrictions) without notice. Out of scope: features that broke by accident because the install was damaged. |
| Release cadence too fast to follow | 88 | 90 | Hermes Agent 45, OpenClaw 37, Grok Bot 3, Muse 3 | Updates and commits arrive so often or in such large batches that users are overwhelmed, can't tell what changed, see their local tweaks overwritten, or ask for a slower stable channel. Out of scope: praise for fast shipping with no burden mentioned, and complaints that updates are too slow. |
| Fixes and promised features arrive late | 79 | 84 | OpenClaw 40, Hermes Agent 16, Grok Bot 12, Muse 5, Poke 3, Gemini Spark 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | Users complain that releases, fixes, promised plans or model support are delayed, that distribution channels or hosts lag behind the latest version, or that the product has stopped getting updates while competitors moved ahead. Out of scope: complaints that updates arrive too often. |
| Update raises token use or slows agent | 44 | 49 | OpenClaw 27, Grok Bot 8, Hermes Agent 5, ChatGPT Dots 2, Gemini Spark 1, Hark 1 | After an update, the agent burns more tokens or usage quota, spawns extra work, or starts up and runs noticeably slower than before. Out of scope: lower answer quality, and slowness of the update process itself. |
| Other | 52 | 54 | OpenClaw 21, ChatGPT Dots 10, Grok Bot 9, Hermes Agent 9, Hark 1, Muse 1, Poke 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Release cadence too fast to follow

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-16, r/openclaw (Reddit): “you guys release new updates every market day. just fix everything and release in one go! constantly updating breaks many things. we end up spending every day fixing openclaw to work, rather than making openclaw agents work for us.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/openclaw/comments/1x75nn8/openclaw_v2026104_patch_release_is_out_with/ph1elj1/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 413 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Updates that complete without failing

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-16, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw i love openclaw but 10.1~ 10.3 bug making more than bug fux. the workflow need to be rework” [source](https://twitter.com/451119985/status/2111036489668915522)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw it is only in 2026.10.5-beta.2. 2. a fix for #168750. activation doctor fails with "database maintenance authority check cannot admit a nested effect" and the update ends state-migrated-no-rollback.” [source](https://twitter.com/1592003170783338498/status/2109684426481303887)

### 3. Clear changelogs and release notes

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-14, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “not criticizing the update itself, but i wish they would replace these walls of ai generated nonsense by something that humans can read and understand the impact, without having to ask their agents to translate it into something meaningful. 😉” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x5u50y/hermes_agent_v0220_the_threshold_release/pgpl4h8/)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-12, @bot (X): “@bot please keep [link] updated am on version: 0.70.2, already yet there is not changelog for it yet.” [source](https://twitter.com/14227311/status/2109438004913954854)
- Muse, 2026-10-05, @muse (X): “@bigt_sheesh @muse thanks for the post, btw use the details of the update on the apps to add these fixes please. shopify is going it well with detailing what's changd in the app stores about their apps!” [source](https://twitter.com/4487698463/status/2107093684730626363)

### 4. More testing before releases

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-17, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw isnt a bug free stable version a basic for software release? is just losing confident release after release for openclaw loyal users” [source](https://twitter.com/1868156885972684800/status/2111262465157972027)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-05, @NousResearch (X): “@teknium @aahmidaziz @nousresearch could we at least get stable release candidates that we don't have to spend our time/tokens fixing? not everyone wants to be a tester.” [source](https://twitter.com/3313153274/status/2106985744313331741)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-27, @openclaw (X): “@steipete @hgruenhagen @openclaw @jlehman_ @vincent_koc reliability work is the right order. the receipt i’d want is a before/after failure taxonomy with repros and latency distributions; feature count can wait until the common paths are measurably steadier.” [source](https://twitter.com/2092031600229826560/status/2104272786218787229)

### 5. Update rollback with backup

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-14, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “i still don't understand the point of having version numbers when hermes doesn't have a simple way to pin your install to a version” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x5pjmm/v0220_opinions/pgob42x/)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@nunyabydnez been exactly there. openclaw, then hermes, both kept breaking on me and i spent more time fixing the agent than using it. that's why i built my own on claude code, where a failed update rolls back on its own. what were you running on it?” [source](https://twitter.com/739516369952215042/status/2108214626294923580)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-06, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch my agent should be able to upgrade itself successfully every time!” [source](https://twitter.com/20802655/status/2107264680792088820)

### 6. Backward-compatible configs and migrations

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-17, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch for upgrades to v0.22.0, is there a migration checklist for existing skills and configuration? a quick validation step before restarting an agent would make the release notes easier to act on.” [source](https://twitter.com/1998625138548649984/status/2111418290669293654)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-26, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@synthwavedd i gotta admit, if it’s openclaw based, and they include a migration path from openclaw… i’m likely switching. i’m *still* on 7.1 oc because all the new september versions have had open issues directly impacting how i’m set up & i don’t have time to fuss with it.” [source](https://twitter.com/1109489629/status/2103873781286719839)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-25, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@omarshahine i run openclaw at home, and updates are the part i'd want enterprise grade first. a gateway that won't come back after a migration is an annoying evening on my mac, not something you want across a company. curious how autopilot handles version pinning.” [source](https://twitter.com/1983929673626382336/status/2103556681837744487)

### 7. Fix bugs introduced by recent updates

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-18, @NousResearch (X): “really wish @nousresearch would fix the idle compaction bug in hermes agent. then i could get rid of the song and dance i have to go through every time i want to update.” [source](https://twitter.com/2088017175760031746/status/2111800487569772959)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw i stuck with 2026.5.7 because qwen3.5:9b would be interrupted while answering further on, up to 8.2 last i tested. anything on that issue ?” [source](https://twitter.com/519216725/status/2109503566729617563)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-05, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@kshep92 why don't people with infinite tokens (like openai or openclaw) fix their apps then?” [source](https://twitter.com/703500451229134849/status/2107181669409317339)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
