# Onboarding, discoverability and documentation (`setup.onboarding_docs`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-01, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-09-27. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/setup.onboarding_docs

Area: [Setting up and connecting](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.md)

**Definition.** How easily a new user learns the product: quick-start guides, docs explaining features and modes, and how findable features are.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Pricing and plan terms stated clearly and consistently](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.pricing_clarity.md) for pricing docs. Not this: see ui.customization for settings complexity.

Rated author-weeks, all agents: 461. Complaint share: 80%.

## The brief

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 from 83 labelled posts and the numbers on this page. Interpretation, not measurement: every quote is verbatim and links to its post.

**Users learn these agents by asking them, not by reading docs.**

TL;DR:

- Complaints outnumber praise for nearly every agent. Hidden settings and undocumented flags are the recurring pain.
- Pi rates better than peers, largely because it ships its own docs and configures itself.
- Overlapping product surfaces and docs that lag releases leave users guessing what exists.

In plain terms: Expect to find features by accident. Users dig settings out of threads, binaries or the agent itself. The tools that explain themselves from inside the session get the warmest posts. Stale docs and confusing product names get the coldest.

### How it breaks

- **Settings nobody told you about** ([Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)). The most common failure is not bad docs but missing ones. Users stumble on settings and features long after they needed them.
Posts describe options that exist but are never written down. One Claude Code user found an undocumented env var only after the agent dug it out of its own binary. A Codex user found a token ceiling on goals by accident and calls the features great but poorly documented. A Pi user found an ignore-file behaviour that works with no docs at all. Others report config syntax with no official reference. Users cannot judge what is configurable, so they stop trying.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Pi, @pidotdev, 2026-09-09: “@pidotdev ty, this is useful. i didn't know this and i went through all the settings more than once 🤯” [source](https://twitter.com/772126300567924740/status/2097673978055623098)
  - Complaint, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-04: “well, i absolutely prefer a config but very often i'm unaware of the existence of a setting, and it's hard to judge what _might_ even be configurable. also, some settings are not documented at all, e.g. just today i found out that anthropic put me into a random a/b test group where claude suddenly stopped using read/edit tools. claude dug up an env var name from its binary that we now set to avoid this weird behavior.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w6yw16/claude_code_v21259_forces_coauthoredby/p7stkre/)
  - Praise, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-09-14: “i learned something new today.... you can set a token limit with /goal in codex. i was trying to have 5.6 sol estimate a token usage projection based on similar goals, told it that historically the final tally for similar work is around 1.2m to 3.5m and 4-12 hours based on past runs. it then set a token usage ceiling for this goal, and kicked off the work. the sidebar goal window in the desktop app doesn't really offer any add'l info about the goal token limit but it's there in my goal bar and it's going up slowly but surely. very interesting. codex has a lot of great features that aren't well documented. have any of you seen this yet? maybe this is just something that's been around a while and i've been missing it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wgbon7/setting_token_limits_on_goals_in_codex_didnt_know/)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-01: “codex cli 0.152.1 released. guardian has been modified to reflect the node repl policy via model metadata. post-update confirmation: - `npm install -g @<email_address>` - execute the same node repl operation before and after the update - save the approval results and usage policy there is no official documentation for the configuration syntax. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/2053104248960000001/status/2094924796182368414)

- **Too many surfaces, too few explanations** ([Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)). Vendors ship parallel products and modes faster than they explain how they differ. Users end up confused about which one to open.
Cursor users list cloud agents, remote desktop and CLI remote control and admit they cannot tell them apart. Codex users see no real difference between its app and sibling products, and merging products into one app is a top request for Codex. Amp newcomers bounce off unfamiliar concepts like orbs. Antigravity users call an announcement so unclear that nobody knew what a new command replaced. The naming outruns the explanation.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-12: “i’m getting really confused between @cursor_ai cloud agents, remote desktop and cli remote control. like really confused. 😵💫” [source](https://twitter.com/1215028704/status/2098659123013570887)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-09-14: “work and codex make no difference, i guess they show you more coding plugins in codex than work, but chat and work should be enough. or chat and codex. there is already no difference between work and codex in usage. it was just created to sell codex to non-coding related users.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wghdgd/chat_work_and_codex_merging/p9ui12c/)
  - Complaint, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-07: “@jkudish @ampcode lost me at orbs and whatever unfortunately feels like i need to learn a new language lmao” [source](https://twitter.com/1773217467558744064/status/2096892265796907030)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-01: “@antigravity who ever wrote this post did a bad job, everyone is confused about the usefulness of /boost and what it replaces” [source](https://twitter.com/106181221/status/2094581959905116607)

- **Docs and announcements trail the release** ([Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)). Release notes, model lists and announcements fall behind the product, so users read stale or contradictory guidance.
OpenCode users report v1 and v2 docs out of sync and model pages missing new entries. Claude Code announcements leave readers more confused after the clarification than before. Antigravity extensions ship without changelogs, and changelogs are the single most requested fix on this page. Users read the gap as the vendor not knowing what it shipped.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-06: “@opencode please update your model documentation frequently, thank you. in the ai era, updates should be timely.” [source](https://twitter.com/714123017601716225/status/2096466746719051940)
  - Complaint, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-21: “hey @opencode the docs seem to be out of sync for v1(/docs/go/) vs v2(/v2/docs/console/go) no grok 4.7 in v2 docs, neither is the ds zdr date updated😅 got a scare there for a moment 😶🌫️ @thdxr @jayair @alan__rice <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/2864964553/status/2102112796456653174)
  - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-24: “@claudedevs just let claude do the comms because your clarification left me more confused than before” [source](https://twitter.com/2515437150/status/2103085899248517477)
  - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-24: “@claudedevs you really need to word your announcements better lmao” [source](https://twitter.com/2070577276236763136/status/2103088230883008917)

- **English-only menus lock users out** ([Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)). Paying users outside the English-speaking market ask, repeatedly and across vendors, for localized interfaces and docs.
A Devin subscriber in China asks for a simplified Chinese app. A Cursor user points out the product can build ambitious software but not a Portuguese interface. Localization requests spread across most agents on this page, from Antigravity and Codex to Cline and Zed. None of the posts report a vendor fixing it.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Devin, @cognition, 2026-09-10: “@dabit3 @cognition @devinai hello. i am a user from china and have already subscribed. i suggest that the devin app release a simplified chinese version.” [source](https://twitter.com/2016491661518680064/status/2097899335069614287)
  - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-04: “@cursor_ai @spacexai @elonmusk @mntruell @amanrsanger @sualehasif996 @arvid220u cursor can build ambitious software, but not a portuguese interface. impressive. how are millions supposed to use ai when every menu and setting is english-only? please ship full pt-br localization.” [source](https://twitter.com/2075165705838731264/status/2095868430326906936)

- **The agent becomes the manual** ([Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)). The strongest praise comes when users skip the docs and ask the agent to guide setup or edit its own config.
Codex users say you can just tell it you switched over and it walks you through. Amp users hand configuration to its built-in agent. Cursor's orchestrator answers setup questions on the spot. OpenCode fans tell newcomers to ask a free model to update the config. This works only when the agent knows its own schema, which is exactly what some users fault rival harnesses for missing.
  Evidence:
  - Praise, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-09-05: “it’s really easy to switch over you can just tell codex you switched over and tell it what you want to do and it will guide you through the whole process” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w859y4/coming_from_claude_code_what_is_the_learning/p80r0ul/)
  - Praise, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-13: “@mattzhang233 @ampcode give it a try, and if you find it difficult to configure, you can let its built-in agent puck help with the configuration (that's how i did it 🤣 lazy)” [source](https://twitter.com/1820087559634202624/status/2098973573205405944)
  - Praise, Cursor, r/cursor, 2026-09-14: “it's really easy to set up. when you go and you click "create project" and connect a repo, the orchestrator bot shows up right away and is already ready to receive instructions. if you're not quite sure what to do, just ask it and it will tell you.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wg22hl/is_switching_away_from_cursor_really_the_play/p9rwfo8/)
  - Praise, OpenCode, r/LocalLLaMA, 2026-09-13: “opencode, dont fuck around with pi or these other suggestions. install opencode, open a terminal and just go. once you set up your global config its just gonna work. update your config, set up a "local" provider and point it at your local models and go. you can even install opencode and jump on a free model and litterally ask it to update the config for you. dont fuck around with pi if you just want a coding experience that just works, opencode is batteries included and pi is like a lego kit that you need to build out yourself.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1wfcewd/migration_from_claude_code_to_a_private_local/p9ldu0h/)

### Who stands out

- **Pi (stronger)**. Pi rates better than peers because its documentation lives inside the tool and the agent can configure itself.
Users praise docs embedded in the app that work offline, and say Pi is great at configuring itself, even benchmarking local models before adding them. One poster tells rivals to copy Pi's habit of shipping its own config schema. The cost is a bare-bones start. Beginners ask which features to add, and some still find settings only after going through them more than once.
  Evidence:
  - Praise, Pi, r/PiCodingAgent, 2026-09-16: “the documentation is embedded into the application itself so no internet connection needed” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wh7i11/simple_orchestrator_for_pi/pa50ogm/)
  - Praise, Pi, r/PiCodingAgent, 2026-09-20: “i've been asking pi to configure itself every few updates and it's great at this. even runs a small benchmark on local models before adding them to give me more info. bottom line: pi is great at configuring itself. ask it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wlebgj/latest_pi_version_86_broke_working_with_local/pb0w3l0/)
  - Praise, Pi, @pidotdev, 2026-09-08: “harnesses that don't ship with the schema/knowledge of their own config is such a missed opportunity... guys, if you are going to copy ideas from @pidotdev at least copy the best ones.” [source](https://twitter.com/2322141703/status/2097391082602406142)
  - Complaint, Pi, r/PiCodingAgent, 2026-09-03: “up until now, i've been using omp as my daily driver. as a lawyer, i rely on it heavily alongside a few custom skills i built for legal drafting, and i'm also developing an office management system in django. everything works great so far, but i'm considering switching to pi to give it a shot. the catch is that pi comes bare-bones, and i'm not sure which features are essential for my workflow (subagents come to mind). my goal is to make it practical and token-efficient from day one. any tips for a beginner to get up and running without sticking to a completely vanilla setup?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1w63f26/switching_from_omp_to_pi_any_suggestions/)

- **OpenAI Codex (weaker)**. Codex draws the most complaints here, centred on hidden features and a sprawl of apps users struggle to adopt.
Some call it beginner-friendly, and its guided switching earns praise. But users report capable features that are not documented, config syntax with no official reference, and a desktop app they cannot break into. Its own users ask most often for merging products into one app, a sign the surfaces confuse more than they help.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-14: “@thsottiaux we're still struggling to use the codex app. personally, i can't seem to break away from vs code yet, old habits die hard.” [source](https://twitter.com/1358972553973350408/status/2099395372376289761)
  - Praise, OpenAI Codex, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-19: “codex does seem more beginner-friendly. also check out lovable.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wkjdjt/my_last_session_took_13h_23m_35s_the_result/par9jn3/)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-09-06: “didn't read all that where is the tldr your site make no sense. monke brain need simple word” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w8h5i9/over_10_billion_tokens_and_a_mad_3_week_solo_span/p82q68o/)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-26: “do you know if claude code has a config file setting or something to lower the context window? for openai i use oh my pi and it's easy to configure context window within the supported range (codex supports it too but it's more hidden). 1m token is a trap and all it does is burn through your usage. i generally prefer 250-350k. though claude's compaction is more annoying than openais since it interrupts you more.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wqxn0n/it_happened_it_finally_started_to_become_dumb/pc9a1ol/)

- **Google Antigravity (weaker)**. Antigravity users ask for changelogs more than anyone, and they flag basic features arriving late and unannounced.
Posts mock basic features landing months after release, and capabilities reaching the app long after the IDE had them. Extensions ship without changelogs. Some users do praise clear docs and in-tool help they had not noticed before, so the material exists. Users say it is just hard to find.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-26: “@antigravity it’s unbelievable that, several months after its release, the latest version finally adds the ability to “open the folder containing the project.” amazing.” [source](https://twitter.com/930846113766064128/status/2103784541953597650)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-20: “they advertise it since day 1, but last i checked they still haven't added it. doesn't help that extensions don't have changelogs anywhere.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wluoqe/which_antigravity_surface_do_you_use_the_most/pb24jju/)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-27: “@antigravity hehe, that's awesome, but hasn't this been available in the antigravity ide for a long time? why is it only now being moved to the antigravity app? 😅” [source](https://twitter.com/2002573216666329088/status/2104045956580950029)
  - Praise, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-03: “yes, but you understand that it's a shame to have to type "—dangerously-skip-permissions" to launch automatically. if we forget, we have to kill and relaunch, which is a shame and could easily be implemented on your side. thank you for /learn and /generative_ui, i wasn't aware!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1w5h7wb/bruh_didnt_expect_gemini_flash_to_top_deepswe/p7jk3uu/)

- **Zed (weaker)**. Zed posts here are almost all complaints, mostly about keybinding conventions the interface does not explain up front.
Users say a vim-style key sequence was ambiguous until the UI added a hint, and one calls the editor impossible to use without vim motions. The sample is small, but nearly every post points at the same gap. The tool assumes knowledge new users do not have.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Zed, r/ZedEditor, 2026-09-21: “it now hints this in the ui, but it wasn't clear to me that it is a g followed by a space and not "hold g, press space" which, with vim mode on does something different.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ZedEditor/comments/1f8mp47/help_how_to_open_a_file_from_global_search_result/pb77nxp/)
  - Complaint, Zed, @zeddotdev, 2026-09-19: “<strict_link> is amazing software but it's impossible to use without vim motions bros @zeddotdev” [source](https://twitter.com/1127914576316645377/status/2101254148712800366)

### Fine print

- Most agents beyond the top six have too few posts here to separate them from the pack.
- Posts are self-selected public comments. Confused newcomers likely post more than satisfied ones.
- Pricing documentation and settings complexity are scored on separate criteria and excluded here.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 285 author-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by Claude Sonnet 5 reads every counted post and extracts what the author asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. Claude Opus 5.5 groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes; code counts them. A theme counts distinct author-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one author-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 author-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different authors, without slurs, preferring posts of 60 to 450 characters, most recent first.

- Claude Code, 2026-09-25, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “oh man wouldn't it be great if there'd be official documentation about this, instead of some random anthropic employee saying this on his private twitter account some months ago in a reply to someone?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wpv1gz/i_measured_the_claude_5hour_meter_around_the/pc10nbk/)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-17, r/ChatGPTPro (Reddit): “it still seems like they should just combine codex and work, i guess they're for separate tasks but there's a lot of overlap. it seems like codex should be able to do everything that work does, and codex should just work like work if you don't give it a coding task” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPTPro/comments/1wifgo3/claude_just_combined_chat_cowork_should_chatgpt/pab5wi8/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-14, r/codex (Reddit): “imo "chat" should take the form factor of an everyday agent experience, like muse, grok bot, instinct, etc. codex and work should merge. i distinguish them as cloud (work) vs. local (codex), they do the same exact things, it just changes what they have access to.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wghdgd/chat_work_and_codex_merging/p9udtmr/)

### 6. Open source the app and agent

### 10. Documentation of all configurable settings

- Claude Code, 2026-09-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “well, i absolutely prefer a config but very often i'm unaware of the existence of a setting, and it's hard to judge what _might_ even be configurable. also, some settings are not documented at all, e.g. just today i found out that anthropic put me into a random a/b test group where claude suddenly stopped using read/edit tools. claude dug up an env var name from its binary that we now set to avoid this weird behavior.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w6yw16/claude_code_v21259_forces_coauthoredby/p7stkre/)

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-20, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “this is very interesting, haven't tried, it would be nice to have some transparency between model performance in different harnesses. i know there are some benchmarks that do provide this, but i feel like when new model benchmarks get released we don't really know what harness the teams use. definitely there needs to be more extensive work with benchmarking harnesses and also different workflows people use for coding.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wl8plf/align_gemini_3x_generation_models_starting_from/pb24mq0/)

### Amp

- Praise, 2026-09-26, @AmpCode (X): “first experience with @ampcode i feel care that have been put into this app, everything feels polished! simple to the point onboarding as well, starting from landing page where i can quickly watch few videos of in action use to understand what i am getting into before i even sign up going to be my main agent interface along with claude code for the near time” [source](https://twitter.com/1806712189757382656/status/2103900042218365057)

### Cline

- Praise, 2026-09-14, @cline (X): “i got early access to @cline’s new open source desktop app, and the feature i’m most excited about isn’t the coding. it’s the work i no longer have to remember to do. i maintain an open-source repository with 14,000+ github stars. that brings a steady stream of pull requests and a recurring job: → review incoming prs → close obvious spam → identify what needs attention → decide what to work on next doing this manually doesn’t scale. with schedule” [source](https://twitter.com/1533666605279891457/status/2099538298402386161)
