# Updates break working setups (`rel.update_breakage`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-01, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-09-27. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/rel.update_breakage

Area: [Reliability and speed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/reliability.md)

**Definition.** New releases regress features, break compatibility or change behaviour unexpectedly. Also covers praise for smooth migrations.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Price, allowance or plan terms changed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/limits.allowance_change.md) for quota changes delivered in an update.

Rated author-weeks, all agents: 781. Complaint share: 85%.

## The brief

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 from 74 labelled posts and the numbers on this page. Interpretation, not measurement: every quote is verbatim and links to its post.

**Fast release cycles keep breaking setups users already trusted.**

TL;DR:

- OpenAI Codex draws the heaviest update complaints, from UI glitches to integrations that stop working.
- OpenCode fares better than peers, though its v2 migration and breaking changes still sting.
- Silent reverts and removed features hurt most, because users discover them mid-work.

In plain terms: You update, and something you relied on is gone or behaves differently: a setting reset, a tab removed, the agent looping. Often the next update fixes it, so users treat releases as both cause and cure.

### How it breaks

- **Features vanish in a release** ([Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)). The sharpest anger comes when an update removes working features outright, with no warning and no setting to bring them back.
Users list whole panels and workflows gone after a single version bump. One Antigravity user catalogues lost message queues and review tabs. A Claude Code user says the desktop app dropped resuming subagents that already held cached context. Smaller losses add up too, like a missing minimise option in Amp or slash commands that stopped working in Cursor. Restoring removed UI elements is a recurring request, led by Conductor users.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-16: “@antigravity why did you destroy all the features in 2.14?? no quote on old conversations or files, no more message queue, no more review tab, overview tab almost useless..., no more different ia grouped by strength, etc, etc. did you push an old build and named it 2.14 on linux?” [source](https://twitter.com/67964661/status/2100049013483384838)
 - Complaint, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-07: “devin treats you like a customer, and not like a lab rat, where they destroy your entire workflow on a whim because somebody at anthropic had the bright idea that the desktop app should no longer permit resuming subagents which already have the right context cached.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wa07cz/devin_cursor_and_claude_code/p8ek07y/)
 - Complaint, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-22: “@divdotdev @ampcode love him but the latest update removed the minimise option for me! :( <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/9111552/status/2102318844928794663)
 - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-22: “poteto poteto poteto @cursor_ai please don't break ide mode :( slash commands no longer works when re-edit chat <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/1197129435570294784/status/2102424088837067206)

- **Settings reset without telling anyone** ([Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)). Updates quietly override configuration users set on purpose, so the breakage surfaces only when the agent starts acting differently.
Posts describe permission modes that worked for months suddenly prompting again after the latest update. A Cursor user says one release forced changes across multiple IDE and terminal settings just to keep coding manually. The pattern is the same: the user did nothing, the defaults moved. Preserving settings and data across updates shows up as a direct request, mostly from OpenAI Codex users.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-03: “i have bypass permissions on, and auto mode on, it’s been working fine for months and randomly started asking again yesterday after the latest update” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w648dy/claude_code_v21259_started_asking_me_in_automode/p7k40zs/)
 - Complaint, Cursor, r/cursor, 2026-09-09: “this is the most insane change in an 'update' that i have ever seen and genuinely might end cursor for me. i should not need to alter multiple settings in the ide and terminal in order to fucking code shit myself.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1w5nl3p/stop_forcing_me_to_the_agent_view_by_default/p8s6w1d/)

- **The updater itself breaks** ([Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)). Sometimes the failure is the update mechanism, leaving users stuck on a broken install or a spinning window.
A Cursor user traces the Mac auto-updater failing to swap the app bundle after download. Others report Cursor auto-update simply broken, or a Codex reinstall that auto-updates straight back into a frozen chat. A reliable update and installer process is the most requested fix on this page, spread across Antigravity, Codex, Cursor and Claude Code.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-18: “@cursor_ai the issue is that cursor’s mac auto-updater downloads the new build, then gatekeeper/tcc locks /applications/cursor.app, so shipit can’t swap it.” [source](https://twitter.com/403044141/status/2100890188985606596)
 - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-08-31: “if a reinstall gets auto-updated again, the in-window chat is going to spin forever.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w3ayg6/codexs_desktop_in_window_is_full_of_bugs_cant/p6z3x7u/)
 - Complaint, Cursor, r/cursor, 2026-09-22: “none of the cursor models are working for me. even cusor auto update is broken too and the time i spent with 4.7 i don't thino it's even that good” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wmv7vx/is_grok_47_not_working_also_says_its_being_rate/pbb4rez/)
 - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-25: “@cursor_ai please fix the broken update, getting too annoying <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/28009458/status/2103333764927762902)

- **Updates land on running sessions** ([Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)). Releases that arrive mid-task can kill in-flight work or change how the agent reasons in the middle of a job.
An Antigravity user says an update opened a new chat while a task was still running, and the old task never resumed. Devin users report issues around daily update times that a session restart clears. Another Antigravity post describes the model stuck in an endless analysis loop right after an update. Users ask for updates that do not interrupt active sessions.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-20: “this time, after update it starts a new chat while the task is still running, and the previous task doesn’t continue. 😑 @antigravity @google” [source](https://twitter.com/50703258/status/2101647254239011086)
 - Complaint, Devin, r/windsurf, 2026-09-18: “lucky you, and for the free model swe 2, i don't have any limit, or have encountered one yet. sometimes around 3 pm cst, when devin updates, i sometime have faced issues, but a restart of session solves that for me. i stay with swe 2 or other free models, all the time, as any other model will just consume the daily limit within few prompts for me.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/windsurf/comments/1wjgykw/devin_weekly_quota_gets_exhausted_even_when_using/paiqtzf/)
 - Complaint, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-03: “when i ask model to do something in antigravity ide it goes to the analyzing cycle. it analyzes until i stop it. like 5 minitues over and over again. i switched to 3.7 flash and it does the same thing. same analyzing cycle. 3.7 model was working very well before yesterday update. is this just me or you have similar experiences ? i asked it why it goes to the analyzing loop and it told me that the system prompt has some planning something.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1w62rr4/gemini_38_flash_goes_to_cycle_way_too_often/)

- **Updating is also the usual fix** ([Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)). The same fast cadence that breaks things often repairs them, and users routinely tell each other to just update.
Cursor users report lag and freezes that vanished after updating. OpenCode and Claude Code users say an error disappeared once they moved off an old version. One OpenCode maintainer shipped a fix within the thread that writes to a temp file first so the app is never left broken. Quick patches earn real goodwill, even when they follow a regression.
 Evidence:
 - Praise, Cursor, r/cursor, 2026-09-19: “**update your app**, i got the same crazy lagging problem for a few days, then realized it was working all fine on the other computer. then i just updated it and voila, back to full speed! quite a stupid bug but at least easily fixable :) i hope it’s just that for you as well!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wkezqe/i_think_they_just_broke_cursor_completely/paqbmxz/)
 - Praise, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-17: “i got this error today. i updated opencode and after it was fine” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wj0xhk/uhhh_tf_you_mean_bro/paf9o0f/)
 - Praise, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-13: “thanks for pointing this out, good catch! just pushed v1.0.2 to fix it. it now writes to a .tmp file first and only swaps it once the repack finishes cleanly, so app.asar is never left in a broken state if interrupted.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wetj08/a_theme_suite_for_opencode_desktop_inspired_by/p9iy2a0/)
 - Praise, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-20: “i didnt realize i was using an out of date version of claude code, that fixes everything” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wl45kx/how_to_connect_claude_code_terminal_and_claudeai/pavvnof/)

### Who stands out

- **OpenAI Codex (weaker)**. Codex draws the most update complaints by far, and posts describe regressions that range from noisy UI glitches to integrations that stop running.
Users report terminals flashing open on every message after an update, and connected setups returning 404s once a linked tool upgraded. Even praised releases needed quick hotfixes, such as a point release restoring a default that broke unsupported providers. Some users like the frequent cadence. Codex users lead requests for rollback, Windows and WSL fixes, and fewer, batched releases.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, r/codex, 2026-09-25: “codex is spamming terminal or at least not hiding them correctly after the latest update. on every reasoning or message send, it will spam opening so many terminal and close immediately! it happens throughout the whole session.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wpphtv/codex_spamming_terminal/)
 - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-03: “hey! you mentioned i could reach out if i ran into any issues after updating, so here i am 😅 i upgraded to openclaw 2026.8.2. the update itself went through, and after some recovery work i got the gateway back to "ready", telegram is working, codex says it’s connected, and "/codex bind" successfully creates a new thread. but the agent still can’t actually run. every turn fails with: "codex app-server turn failed: unexpected status 404 not found: unknown error, url: <strict_link>, cf-ray: a355b7486caa8c85-dus" "/codex status" also shows a 404 when trying to fetch "/backend-api/wham/usage". so overall the system is mostly back up, but the agent itself is basically unusable right now 😅 any idea what might be going on or what i should try next?” [source](https://twitter.com/2091863068141608960/status/2095532634285670518)
 - Praise, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-22: “codex cli rust-v0.155.0 (sep 17) ships experimental /voice, touch id for mcp requests, and streaming reasoning summaries. rust-v0.155.1 (sep 18) restores the reasoning-summary default to none so unsupported providers stop rejecting requests. voice is not the sku. upgrade to 0.155.1. write the mcp policy. keep /voice in the lab. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/121441121/status/2102488389450653851)
 - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-16: “@xolandar @thsottiaux it used to be good but after the latest codex cli update it is dogshit” [source](https://twitter.com/1503325362339696640/status/2100301500673138816)

- **OpenCode (stronger)**. OpenCode rates better than peers, helped by fast fixes and a v2 migration that many users call stable.
Users describe v2 migrating old sessions into a new store automatically and running smoothly. Maintainers ship fixes quickly and design them to fail safe. The friction is real though. Posts call out breaking changes over a holiday weekend, provider errors in 2.0, and teams wary of moving a whole user base to v2. Deprecation windows and migration support are the requests here.
 Evidence:
 - Praise, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-06: “@benjaminshafii @opencode the first time you use it opencode2 will do a migration from the old sessions to the new sqlite. then you won’t find the sessions in opencode, only in opencode2. it’s pretty stable too” [source](https://twitter.com/874001942/status/2096699712560624087)
 - Praise, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-13: “thanks for pointing this out, good catch! just pushed v1.0.2 to fix it. it now writes to a .tmp file first and only swaps it once the repack finishes cleanly, so app.asar is never left in a broken state if interrupted.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wetj08/a_theme_suite_for_opencode_desktop_inspired_by/p9iy2a0/)
 - Complaint, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-08: “breaking changes over a holiday weekend. what a great motivator for me to never use anything related to your or your product again.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1w9pyvq/opencode_go_is_no_longer_general_api_access/p8j2hgy/)
 - Complaint, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-16: “.@opencode 2.0 breaks muse -> error: error from provider (console): upstream request failed: [invalid_request_error] reasoning `encrypted_content` was not issued to this caller” [source](https://twitter.com/54945191/status/2100142273321214088)

- **Claude Code (mixed)**. Claude Code splits users between those who stay current with no trouble and those who say a release quietly changed how their workflow behaves.
Some users say recent versions have been great and they never need to roll back. Others report the agent feeling worse from one day to the next, features like auto-pushing no longer working, and the desktop app dropping subagent resumption. Pinnable model versions are a request that recurs among Claude Code users.
 Evidence:
 - Complaint, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-01: “it was good yesterday. today it's the worst it's ever been. i think they change harness sometimes and it breaks him. can't understand that guy very well though. much better for tokens than 4.8.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w3yqbb/opus_5_is_not_that_bad/p73r214/)
 - Praise, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-01: “no. v2.150, .151 and . 152 have been pretty great i have noticed. seems most issues with usage is continuing uncached sessions that are large and large always on contexts. i urge anyone with usage issues to /context in a fresh session in your project root and see what loads. if you are 60k tokens or more, thats one of your issues. progressively disclose some of that context or load it on demand. please, for what is holy, stop building context in a session beyond 350k tokens. when you get to that, hand off, clear, compact, branch, or fork. and stop returning to those context bloated sessions and missing cache hits. when you do, you get hit with a fresh cache write on that entire context plus your new message.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w3v068/limits_feel_off_this_week/p73n9at/)
 - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-19: “very annoying, the projects feature in claude. it no longer wants to push by itself to vercel/github. @trq212? @claudedevs? @bcherny” [source](https://twitter.com/1358690557606977537/status/2101199235521667198)

### Fine print

- Most agents here have too few posts to rate, so their absence from complaints says little.
- Several complaints involve third-party integrations upgrading, not the agent vendor's own release.
- Two Zed and GitHub Copilot posts are the same text, counted under both agents.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 128 author-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by Claude Sonnet 5 reads every counted post and extracts what the author asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. Claude Opus 5.5 groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes; code counts them. A theme counts distinct author-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one author-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 author-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different authors, without slurs, preferring posts of 60 to 450 characters, most recent first.

### 1. Reliable update and installer process

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-26, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity i’m using linux, and i constantly have to manually download and reinstall antigravity just to update it. the “check for updates” button simply doesn’t work. it shouldn't be too difficult to fix. i don't understand why this is being ignored.” [source](https://twitter.com/2031742561392701440/status/2103723644216287683)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-26, @antigravity (X): “@rodydavis @antigravity i run antigravity ide, installing the extension google.google-antigravity in antigravity ide doesn't sound like a good idea. antigravity ide's last update was 2.5.5 on august 13, 2026 did the update system get broked when it was renamed from antigravity to antigravity ide? <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/17038251/status/2103671410325639448)
- Cursor, 2026-09-25, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai please fix the broken update, getting too annoying <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/28009458/status/2103333764927762902)

### 2. Test releases to avoid breaking functionality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-27, r/codex (Reddit): “i solved scrolling by adding alternate_screen = "never" to the codex config, but the linux cli worse with every upgrade these days. you can't even change the model when it switches to luna reserve and the limit gets reset. you're stuck on luna with no other option. there's a workaround by running codex resume with the --model argument.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wrl6ch/latest_linux_codex_cli_seems_to_have_several_bugs/pcefa55/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-27, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@ajambrosino codex app has never been more unstable than it is rn after this update btw” [source](https://twitter.com/2083503582142402561/status/2104054437862162485)
- Cursor, 2026-09-22, r/cursor (Reddit): “\- after new udpate, not able to copy the content i have written inside the chat text input area \- test the product before pushing it in prod, its causing irritation” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wn14pc/cant_copy_from_the_chat_text_input_area_after_new/)

### 3. Restore removed UI elements

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-26, r/codex (Reddit): “oh crap, the left pane doesn't show anymore on hover over the left side so that requires command+b or mouse clicks to toggle it. since i usually have codex tiled on the left or right half of my laptop display, this upgrade is a net negative due to the wasted space and required manual toggle. what i was expecting in an update was an easier way to use chatgpt or codex, but this update didn't even bring that.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wqtyo7/new_codex_ui/pc7hnxd/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-23, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs is it me or projects got hidden on ios? <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/14092608/status/2102777446013772009)
- OpenCode, 2026-09-22, @opencode (X): “@opencode opencode should not frequently modify content that affects user habits, and even during version updates, it should ensure no disruption to daily usage.” [source](https://twitter.com/1906365372552613889/status/2102235405915676780)

### 4. Updates without interrupting active sessions

- Cursor, 2026-09-26, @cursor_ai (X): “@importhuman @cursor_ai @chatgpt need a hot update while tasks are running... i don't update my codex for months 😂” [source](https://twitter.com/1213841290825043969/status/2103767449476682067)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-26, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “i usually start about four times the number of projects with tmux and codex cli for personal development, but it's a hassle to have to close everything and start it all up again during updates 🫤. i wonder if it would be possible to enable hot reloading from the running state.” [source](https://twitter.com/283627252/status/2103697088790081811)
- Cursor, 2026-09-24, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai go take a look at orca's ability to update its application without destroying the shells would be nice to implement asap” [source](https://twitter.com/391188422/status/2103113058096677294)

### 5. Preserve settings and data across updates

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-27, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “recent openai - the codex app often does not open - 6sol and luna are not a reasonable evolution - large-scale ui changes in the browser and desktop app as a result, deleted sessions reappear, and sessions included in the project pop out furthermore, a terrible downgrade that prevents right-clicking to immediately open a different session in a new tab it's all quite bad” [source](https://twitter.com/1651894281492365314/status/2104044496346570832)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-25, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “codex cli just flipped a few operator defaults that matter in the terminal. fullscreen transcripts are on by default. eligible interactive sessions auto-start the background server. f forks a conversation locked by another app while keeping drafts and queued prompts.” [source](https://twitter.com/320360226/status/2103498509341319301)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-17, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@githubcopilot @jamesmontemagno since a recent update the github copilot app is no longer always loading custom agents in a new session. sometimes it does sometimes it doesn’t. can we get this fixed? it’s rather annoying. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/66640739/status/2100646193411850246)

### 6. Fix Windows and WSL update regressions

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-25, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “upgraded codex cli to 0.157.0 on windows 11 and got hit immediately with: “host job object prevents daemon detachment” 🙃 windows 11 modern standby wraps console processes in a job object, and codex bails out even if breakaway is allowed. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/156289750/status/2103494809260315026)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-22, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux you shipped latest codex extension with codex cli 0.155 which is broken on wsl, it can't run anything in sandbox. forcing the codex cli to latest codex-cli in vs code solved it.” [source](https://twitter.com/133604928/status/2102524028535689571)

### OpenCode

- Praise, 2026-09-27, r/opencodeCLI (Reddit): “very good, if you host it on a server or leave your computer running you can use it with it’s webui or with the ios/android app without losing access to any features from opencode. it’s helped me immensely and i’d strongly recommend at least trying it. also frequent updates and not buggy on the whole ,” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1wrgmfe/whats_the_deal_with_openchamber/pccaety/)
- Praise, 2026-09-26, r/opencode (Reddit): “i had been using a mix of v1 and v2 for a while, but about a week ago i finally switched entirely to v2. for me at least, it is significantly less buggy. ui and other glitches that had been annoying me for months in v1 are now gone. only major pain was adapting my sandboxing approach to account for its shared service, but the new internal architecture is worth it because it allows for more powerful plugin extensions.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wqgyi8/v1v2_bait_and_switch/pc6qs7x/)
- Praise, 2026-09-25, r/opencode (Reddit): “as suggested by [razzmatazzcandid7794](<strict_link>) if you're using windows, just uninstall open code and reinstall it it will start workng as before. your context and projects will automatically be restored. i have tried and it worked for me.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wjg9wh/what_went_wrong_with_open_code/pbwe92w/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-27, r/opencode (Reddit): “yes, same experience here. i tried to migrate to v2 this friday but all my plugins failed. so, by now is a no-go for me as my workflow depends so much on these plugins.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wqppth/opencode_v2/pcag8ri/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-27, r/opencode (Reddit): “was looking for some comments on plugins: i switched to v2 and didn't notice that all the plugins failed, the harness i've built wasn't loading, throwing away tokens instead of saving them... once i notice, took me one or two rounds of claude to adjust everything and now all is fine again. just dropping this to saving you from the bitter drink i had ;-)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wqppth/opencode_v2/pcb1yj9/)

### Google Antigravity
