# Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors (`rel.service_errors`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-01, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-09-27. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/rel.service_errors

Area: [Reliability and speed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/reliability.md)

**Definition.** Backend unavailability, 5xx or connection errors, capacity errors, and transient 429 errors that do not reflect the user's quota.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Short rolling usage window blocks or interrupts work](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/limits.window_interrupts_work.md) and limits.allowance_size for plan quota being reached. Not this: see rel.tool_call_errors for harness tool failures.

Rated author-weeks, all agents: 2083. Complaint share: 93%.

## The brief

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 from 80 labelled posts and the numbers on this page. Interpretation, not measurement: every quote is verbatim and links to its post.

**Every agent goes down; what differs is how it fails.**

TL;DR:

- Complaints swamp praise for every agent; outages are a category-wide tax, not one vendor's flaw.
- Google Antigravity alone rates worse than peers, with weeks of instability and 429s on paid plans.
- Codex users fight model-at-capacity errors; OpenCode users report 429s while quota sits unused.

In plain terms: Expect your agent to stall mid-task, throw capacity or rate errors with quota left, or go dark during a shared outage. Users cope by keeping a second agent or harness ready. Afterward, they want usage credited back.

### How it breaks

- **One bad day, every agent dark** ([Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)). When upstream model providers fail together, users report Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot and others going down in the same window.
Posts from one early-September day read like a roll call of dead tools. Users note the failures looked correlated and went unexplained. A few agents earned praise simply for staying up, with users crediting Cursor's own model and Kiro during the window. Users draw one lesson from it. Keep a second agent or provider ready, because most stacks hang off the same upstream plumbing.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-03: “grok down. cursor down. chatgpt down. claude down. looks like it’s time to rest 😂 bye @cursor_ai @claudeai @chatgpt @grok 👋” [source](https://twitter.com/1673598870448934912/status/2095535453760110893)
  - Complaint, Cursor, r/singularity, 2026-09-15: “i'm surprised nobody is mentioning that one day recently where anthropic, openai, grok and cursor all went down at the same time. to me this seems correlated, yet it's not mentioned anywhere or by anyone.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/singularity/comments/1wgibs1/ai_2027_author_daniel_kokotajlo_tweets_message/p9uxwe8/)
  - Complaint, GitHub Copilot, r/codex, 2026-09-03: “massive outage, anthropic, gemini, cursor, copilot and grok are also down” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w69rhz/huh_next_model_incomming/p7le4s3/)
  - Praise, Cursor, @cursor_ai, 2026-09-03: “every model down but @cursor_ai's composer 2.5 is up legend 💪🔥” [source](https://twitter.com/1979431545573171200/status/2095551809456906486)

- **Model at capacity, again** ([Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)). Codex users hit model-at-capacity errors that survive resets, reinstalls and re-logins, and fewer capacity errors is the top Codex request here.
Users describe the CLI refusing a chosen model as at capacity, then failing again after a model switch. Some suspect the error is tied to one model tier. Pi users report the same upstream squeeze handled better, because Pi retries automatically and Codex does not. Automatic retry on transient errors is a standing request.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-01: “it's so annoying to be told that the selected model of codex cli is at capacity. from what i've researched, it seems like it doesn't happen with anything other than sol, so maybe luna or something would be fine at this point.” [source](https://twitter.com/1031053006492422146/status/2094625382079320159)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-15: “when codex cli keeps reporting a model is at capacity and switching from gpt-6-astra to gpt-5.6-luna still fails after reset, reinstall, and logout/login, what do you check first?” [source](https://twitter.com/2035804004740169728/status/2099806886111387780)
  - Praise, Pi, @pidotdev, 2026-09-10: “@pidotdev dealling much better with openai capacity than codex, codex dont bother auto retry but pi does! <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/455899040/status/2098136727185694940)

- **Rate errors with quota left** ([Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)). Users report 429 and resource-exhausted errors while plan usage is low, so a backend failure looks like the user's own limit.
OpenCode Go users cite repeated rate_limit_exceeded responses that keep failing through retries despite low usage. Google Antigravity Pro users see quota-exhausted 429s on every account they try. Others get high-traffic errors after the agent has already burned tokens. Cursor users see provider rate limiting. The real cost is confusion. Users cannot tell whether to wait, switch models or upgrade.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-04: “repeated 429 rate_limit_exceeded on @opencode go with muse spark 1.3 contributor, pi 0.85.0. console go: upstream request failed: [rate_limit_exceeded] fails even after 3 retries, while my usage quota is still very low. is this an upstream capacity/rate-limit issue? <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/2010615421838475264/status/2095851210523783406)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-09: “@antigravity @google i am not able to use antigravity ai chat from today morning i have pro plan its giving same error for every google account i login with : "error": { "code": 429, "message": "resource has been exhausted (e.g. check quota).", "status": "resource_exhausted" } <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/1928525112162078721/status/2097535783959937085)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-14: “after running for 3 minute and burning my precious token, it says high traffic, for the opus model?! dude..high traffic for google?! and the worst part, it shows only this pro account and not in my other or friends pro accounts. what to do?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wga82s/selective_and_sketchy_high_traffic_error/)
  - Complaint, Cursor, r/cursor, 2026-09-22: “i'm getting the same thing and it's saying the model is being rate limited by the provider” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wmv56z/had_cursor_ultra_200_a_month_before_grok47_but/pba1bvu/)

- **Mid-run drops eat the work** ([Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)). Server errors that land mid-response or mid-run cost users partial output, caches and whole sessions, not just a few minutes.
Claude Code users report server errors mid-response while limits are still available, and outages in the middle of large agent runs. Kiro users describe timeouts that lost heavy sessions. Devin Desktop users report turns that hang silently on a presumed capacity issue, sometimes unblocking only after they press cancel. Silent failures hurt most, because users wait instead of retrying.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-03: “@claudedevs @claudeai server is down again... in mid of a large run, hope claude code has a robust recovery system for long running agent and subs... but i guess my caches is goner.” [source](https://twitter.com/68451547/status/2095529961545244847)
  - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-25: “@claudedevs ● api error: server error mid-response. the response above may be incomplete. why am i getting this error when limits are available?” [source](https://twitter.com/1813678334531833856/status/2103569326217339380)
  - Complaint, Kiro, r/kiroIDE, 2026-09-27: “kiro-cli timed out a few times yesterday. i lost two heavy work sessions. all i found is a ticket so it appears it does not exist (<strict_link>) how do people check downtime? does kiro do rate limiting if you are doing heavy work? it felt slow.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1wrsp5y/kiro_status_page/)
  - Complaint, Devin, @cognition, 2026-09-11: “@cognition any chance you could do a hotfix for devin desktop to not silently hang when doing a turn if (presumably) it encounters a capacity issue? experiencing this with swe-2. interestingly it sometimes continues/unblocks after i press cancel button cc @dabit3” [source](https://twitter.com/26428817/status/2098520370244444254)

- **Downtime without status or credit** ([Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)). After long outages, users want accurate status pages and usage credited back, and they judge vendors on whether that happens.
Some Claude Code users contrast long outages that brought no reset with OpenAI resetting usage readily. Others defend Claude, saying outages are rare and downtime gets repaid, so the record is contested. Requests for accurate status pages and for prioritizing stability over new features show up across several agents.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-22: “so ask users to use more in off times if possible, then the whole thing goes down and so i was done for the night and cant even give a reset? openai does if someone sneezes.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wmv5zi/opus_5_model_overloaded/pbdvgc6/)
  - Complaint, Claude Code, @ClaudeDevs, 2026-09-03: “@claudedevs and @claudeai, i get it, outages happen. but sometimes some when they go on for hours some good will and accommodation with a reset or something after would be nice. i suppose that's what makes open source more appealing, though it is slower.” [source](https://twitter.com/115225093/status/2095523585112625294)
  - Praise, Claude Code, r/ClaudeCode, 2026-09-03: “if it would happen daily, sure. it happens maybe once a year though. and they repay the downtime.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w67l1p/claude_is_down_again_reliability_is_apparently_a/p7ktnm3/)

### Who stands out

- **Google Antigravity (weaker)**. The only agent rated worse than peers here, with users describing weeks of instability after a clean launch.
Posts describe 429 resource-exhausted errors on Pro plans, high-traffic rejections after tokens are spent, and web search down for more than a day. Recurring 5xx errors lead its requests. Some users report recovery. One says the CLI avoids most of the errors the desktop app shows.
  Evidence:
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-24: “yeah it's ridiculous.. been like about two weeks like this. reallying annoying while at launch everything was fine” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1woea7p/30_minutes_for_a_single_prompt_20_40_from_the_5/pbqud3l/)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, @antigravity, 2026-09-09: “@antigravity @google i am not able to use antigravity ai chat from today morning i have pro plan its giving same error for every google account i login with : "error": { "code": 429, "message": "resource has been exhausted (e.g. check quota).", "status": "resource_exhausted" } <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/1928525112162078721/status/2097535783959937085)
  - Complaint, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-13: “confirmed, web search has been down for like 36+ hrs for me” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wepn7h/agy_uses_duckduckgo_for_search/p9honth/)
  - Praise, Google Antigravity, r/google_antigravity, 2026-09-27: “well i've met a lot of desktop app users who come to my discord server and start screaming that antigravity is shit. then i made them use cli and they've always been happy since. i think the main problem people hate with the gui is the insane token burn and the gui talking up all the resources of your computer. that's why i switched in the first place to get rid of the insane token burn. plus the cli usually only has bugs and doesn't normally experience errors a lot atleast for me” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wqmd4n/why_is_the_antigravitycli_so_underrated/pcamrq4/)

- **OpenAI Codex (mixed)**. Codex draws the most capacity complaints, yet users report the CLI kept working while the app was down.
Most requests for fewer model-at-capacity errors and more compute come from Codex users. Posts also describe a night of 401s. On the other side, users say the CLI stayed usable during an outage, and some argue that failure had nothing to do with server load. Users also want auto retry and fixes for mid-task stream disconnects.
  Evidence:
  - Praise, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-26: “@timo_rf when it went down i could use the codex cli just fine though. its an unrelated issue to server load, not sure what ru talking about” [source](https://twitter.com/1558218836511522822/status/2103856116530905169)
  - Complaint, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-26: “openai's codex spent friday night handing out 401s like a bouncer who lost the guest list. half the ai timeline briefly remembered what coding felt like before autocomplete. #openai #codex #chatgpt <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/2081926813115183104/status/2103651291801039181)
  - Praise, OpenAI Codex, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app, 2026-09-26: “@stevenheidel @cherry_mx_reds when it went down few hours ago, i went to the codex cli and it worked fine tbh” [source](https://twitter.com/1558218836511522822/status/2103659169824010496)

- **OpenCode (mixed)**. OpenCode earns praise as a fallback when big providers fail, while its own Go tier draws spurious 429 complaints.
Users switched to OpenCode Go during the shared outage and call pay-per-token API access reliable. Complaints center on 429s at low usage, generic 500s that hide the provider's response, free models returning nothing, and capacity planning users call thin. Spurious 429s lead its requests.
  Evidence:
  - Praise, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-03: “switching over to @opencode go. no outage with these guys <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/22732355/status/2095537784966479942)
  - Praise, OpenCode, @opencode, 2026-09-03: “openai, anthropic, grok and gemini maybe down, but @opencode + @aiatmeta muse spark 1.3 are still going strong on the malluable @omarchylinux. powered by arch, hyprland (@hyprwm), quickshell (@outfoxxedd), and @herdrdev. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/875823497200775168/status/2095551722261274679)
  - Praise, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-16: “it's a pay per token api and as cheap as open router and any other option out there really. reliable, fast, no issues at all. i've never paid for a sub so i can't compare, i've only ever paid for api token usage.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wf45kp/just_why/pa8tvg0/)
  - Complaint, OpenCode, r/opencode, 2026-09-17: “they literally didnt plan at all. couldnt meet capacity. also their router system was messing a lot of things up like my kanban” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wj9f0m/wth_union_alpha/pagv5yz/)

- **Amp (mixed)**. Amp users report real outages but praise fast fixes and candid updates from the team.
The team acknowledged major upstream outages plus its own scaling problems, and called resilience its top priority. Users credit quick recovery, with one saying service came back within minutes. A loyal user warns that each outage wears down their willingness to keep using it.
  Evidence:
  - Praise, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-03: “really like how @ampcode handled today's outage. <strict_link>” [source](https://twitter.com/1350354798717984769/status/2095400240144843120)
  - Complaint, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-06: “@ayushdecoded @huvinesh99 @ampcode @sqs @puckofamp yea, last week was tough. there were some major outages from some services we rely on, and we hit some scaling issues with our own infrastructure. it's top of the list for us right now - hope we can win back your trust!” [source](https://twitter.com/1892565450845736960/status/2096701981234442632)
  - Praise, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-18: “@rockorager @ampcode so quick, i left my desk for less than five minutes and it was back up 👍” [source](https://twitter.com/33135576/status/2101085551021654105)
  - Complaint, Amp, @AmpCode, 2026-09-08: “i really enjoy @ampcode and have recommended it to plenty of people. every time i get blocked because of an outage makes me want to use it less and less.” [source](https://twitter.com/423086332/status/2097324055942541682)

### Fine print

- Posts cluster around one shared outage day, which inflates complaint counts for several agents at once.
- Many agents have too few posts here to rank. Silence is not evidence of uptime.
- Users often cannot tell an upstream provider failure from a failure in the agent's own backend.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 163 author-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by Claude Sonnet 5 reads every counted post and extracts what the author asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. Claude Opus 5.5 groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes; code counts them. A theme counts distinct author-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one author-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 author-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different authors, without slurs, preferring posts of 60 to 450 characters, most recent first.

### 2. Fewer model-at-capacity errors

- Devin, 2026-09-25, r/windsurf (Reddit): “client error: protocol error (unimplemented): we are currently experiencing capacity issues with this serving model. please switch to a different model or try again later. (trace id: <structured_id>) unimplemented? and "with this serving model"? surely it should be "with serving this model". my idea - make the error messages better and fix the "protocol error" bug. more capacity would be nice too of course 😄” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/windsurf/comments/1wpw8do/error_messages_are_not_their_best_strength/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-24, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “just experiencing the issue today and it's infuriating at this point, high token usage when it works for simple prompts and most of the time it just says "our servers are experiencing high traffic right now, please try again in a minute." any update on this issue would be great” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wh8h5u/psa_gemini_38_flash_slowerrors/pbsbuq4/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-18, r/codex (Reddit): “i am pretty close to refunding my 20x if they don't stop giving selected model is at capacity, ffs i spinned up $20 claude to do the work and haven't hit the 5 hour limit yet” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wj6tl0/in_case_youre_wondering_this_is_what_100_plan/pak3ir7/)

### 3. Stop spurious 429 rate limit errors

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-26, r/codex (Reddit): “i have the same error 401 and i couldn't work, and the chatbot said that there were too many requests, because of codex, i literally couldn't work. so i went with claudecode. did anyone else from latam experience the same on september 23-24, 2026?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wqnejx/openai_codex_offline_again/pc5ojjn/)

- OpenCode, 2026-09-18, @opencode (X): “wth is this @opencode error from provider (console go): upstream request failed: [rate_limit_exceeded] rate limit exceeded. please retry after a brief wait. i only used 2% of my 5-hour limit but get rate limits??” [source](https://twitter.com/1250026646058516481/status/2101001690119876845)

### 4. Fix recurring 5xx and request errors

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-26, @antigravity (X): “this feature cost a minimum of 160k 5 people with 300k tc worked on it for a month a 400k tc manager "supervised" it they called it a "sprint" sprints used to be 2 weeks, now they are only one 50% time compression, incredible! 17 people will use this feature (accidentally) roi = 0x antigravity needs to lock in last time i tried gives "unknown error occured" 3/10 times i send a prompt” [source](https://twitter.com/888144550988046337/status/2103916130402496571)

"union alpha free". no idea how good it is. it is way too slow for literally anything and just failed 4 "write" tool calls in a row in @opencode. if you're gonna release a free model, at least remotely have the capacity for it.” [source](https://twitter.com/1635000274812035074/status/2100296874607399384)
