# Seeing what the agent is doing and has done (`control.visibility`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/control.visibility

Area: [Staying in control](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/control.md)

**Definition.** Whether the user can watch the agent work, see progress indicators and status updates, and review an activity or tool-call log.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Says it did something it did not do](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.false_reports.md) when the status it gives is untrue; see [Plan contents, bundles and usage meters unclear](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.plan_clarity.md) when the missing view is usage consumption.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 581. Complaint share: 52%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse and Hermes Agent are best at showing what they are doing. Muse users describe a small status pill that tells them the agent is busy, and Hermes Agent users describe a live screen view and traces they can look back through. Few users rate this: it is the 43rd most rated of 53 criteria. Grok Bot and ChatGPT Dots rank low. Grok Bot users write 29% of the category's complaints here. ChatGPT Dots users rate it 2.99 times as often as other users, and 63 of their 82 rated user-weeks are complaints.

### What separates the best from the rest

Muse and Hermes Agent users say they can watch the agent work, see where it stalls and step in when needed. Grok Bot users say they can no longer find the screen view that let them watch the bot. They also say it gives only a short acknowledgement, so they have to open the app to check. ChatGPT Dots users describe long silences and a vague status chip. They say they cannot tell whether the agent is working, stuck or idle.

  - Muse, 2026-09-23, @muse (X): “@alexcornell @muse it's cool that the status pill has been there since the beginning. it's such a simple but effective way to keep track of what the agent's doing.” [source](https://twitter.com/1745701761401204737/status/2102599619339280714)
  - Hermes Agent, 2026-09-24, @NousResearch (X): “@wahbi_4 @nousresearch by god, it's a nice transition 👏🔥 you see the agent working in front of you and you can intervene when needed, this way automation becomes easier and more reliable 🤖💚” [source](https://twitter.com/1230224093099765766/status/2103112937661448233)

  - Grok Bot, 2026-10-09, App Store (App Store): “grok bot is a good app, but i can no longer see the screen showing what my bot is doing. there used to be a small computer screen icon on the home screen that let me watch it work. that feature was really helpful. please bring it back so i can follow the bot’s progress again!” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/grok-bot/id6794501026)
  - ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-02, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “chatgpt dots really needs to be a bit more transparent about what the dot is doing. i see the most vague little status chip or nothing at all and i am waiting for several minutes with just no idea whats going on. the behavior im describing exists within codex.” [source](https://twitter.com/1305751307660206080/status/2106055322364268721)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a missing live progress signal during long tasks. It covers 25% of complaining user-weeks, and most of these complaints come from Grok Bot and ChatGPT Dots users in close to equal numbers. Two smaller modes come mainly from one agent. Grok Bot users write 50% of complaints that usage and context consumption are not broken down. Hermes Agent users write 36% of complaints about having no single place to see every agent, subagent and job.

305 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No live progress signal during long tasks | 76 | 79 | Grok Bot 25, ChatGPT Dots 24, Hermes Agent 14, OpenClaw 8, Hark 2, Muse 2, Instinct 1 | Covers an agent that is working on a task but shows no running status, steps, reasoning stream, typing indicator or progress bar, or shows them only some of the time, so the user can't tell whether it is progressing, waiting or hung; does not cover failures that already happened and were never reported, or after-the-fact logs. |
| No reviewable activity or tool-call log | 59 | 61 | Grok Bot 17, Hermes Agent 13, OpenClaw 11, Muse 10, ChatGPT Dots 8 | Covers cases where the user can't later look up a complete, readable record of what the agent did, including tool calls, external actions, outputs and decision traces, because the log is missing, cut off, hidden from history or hard to read; does not cover live progress display or usage and cost figures. |
| No overview across agents, subagents and jobs | 44 | 44 | Hermes Agent 16, Grok Bot 10, OpenClaw 9, Muse 5, ChatGPT Dots 3, Gemini Spark 1 | Covers the lack of one place to see which agents, subagents, background jobs, cron runs and projects are active, idle, stuck or done, and what they produced, which forces the user to open threads one by one; does not cover what happens inside a single agent's run. |
| Failures and stalls go unreported | 38 | 38 | Grok Bot 10, ChatGPT Dots 9, OpenClaw 7, Hermes Agent 6, Muse 6 | Covers an agent or its platform that crashes, stalls, gets denied an action or hits an outage without telling the user or giving a usable reason, so a dead or stuck run looks the same as one that is working or finished; does not cover healthy runs that just lack progress updates. |
| Agent's own config and memory hidden | 25 | 26 | Grok Bot 9, Hermes Agent 6, OpenClaw 4, ChatGPT Dots 3, Muse 3 | Covers skills, memories, prompts, schedules, heartbeats, compaction and session changes that the user can't inspect, or that the agent changes without telling them, such as silently rewriting a skill or starting a new session; does not cover logs of task actions or usage counters. |
| Usage and context consumption not broken down | 24 | 25 | Grok Bot 12, Hermes Agent 5, OpenClaw 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, Hark 1 | Covers missing or vague views of tokens, quota, cost, remaining provider allowance or context-window fill, especially per bot, task or process, which leaves users and agents unable to see what is burning usage; does not cover billing disputes or pricing levels. |
| Pending decisions and approvals buried in chats | 13 | 13 | Grok Bot 4, ChatGPT Dots 3, Hermes Agent 3, Muse 3 | Covers the lack of a single view that collects questions, approvals and action items waiting on the user, or standing instructions the agent is still carrying out, so these get lost across chats and bots; does not cover general status of running work. |
| Other | 28 | 31 | ChatGPT Dots 11, Hermes Agent 7, Hark 6, Grok Bot 3, Muse 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Usage and context consumption not broken down

- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-04, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch i miss the helpful usage display options recently removed in the style-uber-alles re-skinning. we now have less control over range and granularity. it used to be more resizable so we could shrink the window and observe usage in a corner of the display. i mourn these losses. 😢” [source](https://twitter.com/14926193/status/2095943531512942603)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 422 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Audit trail of agent actions

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-10, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “both labs shipped always-on agents this week: openai's dots in the chatgpt mobile app, per x's summary, and claude code projects. agents that never stop need logs that never stop. the winner is whoever makes every agent action auditable.” [source](https://twitter.com/41304261/status/2108973269907022140)
- Hark, 2026-10-07, @hark_labs (X): “@kevskgs @hark_labs @muse vault auth + visible computer use is the combo. users need to see what the agent did. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1856728854934482944/status/2107905655709344252)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-06, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch knowing what it did, when, and why is the part i care about most. if a tool acts on my behalf, i need a record i can actually check.” [source](https://twitter.com/1827897370945761281/status/2107268417116114961)

### 2. Working and progress status indicators

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-13, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “i wish there was a visual indicator to see that @openai dot is working on something” [source](https://twitter.com/1830424170544394241/status/2110124099205046482)

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-10, @openclaw (X): “@conoro @openclaw fair play to openclaw on the recovery, but 'hadn't triggered in ages' is the scary bit. a watcher that only speaks up on errors can't tell you it has stopped. does super claw send a heartbeat, or just alert on failures?” [source](https://twitter.com/945131351719624709/status/2108957017004204218)

### 3. Usage and cost per agent

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-16, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “elon, can we get a feature in grok bot where we list usage next to every bot, including total usage. this way we can monitor if one bot is eating too many tokens and need to make adjustments. - Grok Bot, 2026-10-15, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@leerob that's basically how i run it now. my grok bot holds the plan and hands repo work to cursor cloud agents, then checks the pr before i ever see it. the thing i'd want most from projects is seeing which subagent is eating the usage. - Grok Bot, 2026-10-11, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@mattyp @bot quick feature request: could grok bot show agents their own usage, and cursor's too? i run a team of bots, and a live usage readout would let them pace themselves.” [source](https://twitter.com/1518996675582259201/status/2109313377310736745)

### 4. Run traces and debugging tools

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-06, @NousResearch (X): “@olriconlyfornft @nousresearch @teknium the /aux and /errors pairing could make missing summaries much easier to diagnose. can a background failure be linked to the original slack request, so the user sees which part is incomplete and a retry resumes that run?” [source](https://twitter.com/2103160355426099201/status/2107460828320727392)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-04, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “building the ai orchestrator on openclaw taught me that multi-agent coordination is mostly just brutal state management. spent days debugging agents stuck in infinite error loops. we desperately need better tracing tools for agent routing. what are you guys using?” [source](https://twitter.com/1448008091618926599/status/2106821012126118213)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-04, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@elonmusk a useful speed demo would show the whole grok bot run, with model time, tool time and waiting time broken out. a 20-step task pays each pause repeatedly. faster text generation helps, but shrinking the gaps between actions could change what feels practical” [source](https://twitter.com/936436614917636101/status/2106674802131964069)

### 5. Live visibility into what the agent is doing

- Hark, 2026-10-07, @hark_labs (X): “i don’t trish @hark_labs already. i think it comes down to how it responds and the word choices to state when it’s thinking. it does not assure me what it’s actually doing or accessing in the background.” [source](https://twitter.com/3604943412/status/2107773524895257050)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-04, ChatGPT Dots Finally Clicked When I Learned This (YouTube): “i wish it would clearly tell you what its thinking about or working on. and somtimes you dont know if its workin or slackin. sometimes it just pauses. tried using skills to keep it movin but not sure its following it or not.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RYDaLnB6ec&lc=Ugw15LRGQbzSNIdjWCR4AaABAg)

### 6. Manual takeover when agent is stuck

- Hark, 2026-10-17, @hark_labs (X): “@hark_labs still can’t even get it to log into doordash. asked it to hand me browser control so i could do it and said it couldn’t. if this is supposed to be an agent that could potentially work for me, it’s not off to a great start. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1955764894772375553/status/2111267945183650262)
- Hark, 2026-10-13, @hark_labs (X): “@hark_labs feature request: give us control of hark’s computer at least for when he’s encountering security checks issues at sign in and sign up pages.” [source](https://twitter.com/1148534535841374208/status/2110135592956887287)
- Hark, 2026-10-13, @hark_labs (X): “@aliansarinik @hark_labs @openai it would be great if hark could manually take over the browser, otherwise many things can't be done.” [source](https://twitter.com/1112370951532904450/status/2109854972833882245)

### 7. Action log with rollback

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
