# Paying for the agent (`billing`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/billing

Area of 6 criteria. What does it cost me to use it, and is it worth it?

Criteria: [Subscription price versus value received](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.price_level.md), [Free tier, trial or required plan to start](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.entry_plan.md), [Usage allowance size, exhaustion and reset wait](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.usage_cap.md), [Agent spends usage on overhead and costly choices](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.token_efficiency.md), [Plan contents, bundles and usage meters unclear](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.plan_clarity.md), [Buying, upgrading, cancelling and refunding go wrong](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.purchase_flow.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 7738. Complaint share: 65%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse is the best-rated agent on price and value, and its lead holds: it ranks high on every criterion where any agent does. Hermes Agent is 2nd of 7 and ranks high on fair price, token use and cheap trials. Grok Bot ranks last of 7. It ranks low on every criterion except plan clarity, where no agent ranks high or low. Its users rate the area 2.39 times as often as other users, and they write 60% of the category's complaints here. OpenClaw ranks low on fair price and token waste. ChatGPT Dots ranks low on fair price and cheap trials.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is a weekly allowance that runs out within hours or days. It makes up 42% of allowance complaints, and 81% of those come from Grok Bot users. Grok Bot users also write most complaints about background tasks that silently drain quota and about long waits for a fixed reset. There are two exceptions. Bloated context resent on every turn is mainly a Hermes Agent and OpenClaw problem. Most failed checkouts come from Muse users.

### [Subscription price versus value received](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.price_level.md)

835 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry price too high, no free tier | 187 | 192 | Grok Bot 103, Muse 26, ChatGPT Dots 22, Hermes Agent 16, OpenClaw 11, Gemini Spark 4, Hark 4, Poke 1 | Covers complaints that even the cheapest plan with the agent costs too much for ordinary users, or that there is no free or low-cost tier and the agent is locked behind premium or business plans. It excludes complaints that a plan the user already pays for gives too little usage. |
| Premium model tokens too costly to run agents | 132 | 135 | Grok Bot 47, OpenClaw 45, Hermes Agent 36, Muse 4 | Covers complaints that running an agent framework on pay-per-token premium models, or keeping it on 24/7 with growing context, piles up API, server, or hardware bills the user cannot sustain. It excludes the bundled allowance of a flat subscription. |
| Cheaper alternatives deliver the same for less | 129 | 133 | Grok Bot 64, OpenClaw 25, ChatGPT Dots 21, Hermes Agent 13, Muse 6 | Covers complaints that compare the price directly with competing subscriptions, free products, or open-source and self-built setups that do similar work for less money, often while the user says they are switching. It excludes complaints that are only about absolute price with no comparison. |

### [Free tier, trial or required plan to start](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.entry_plan.md)

461 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hard paywall at first launch, no trial | 105 | 106 | Grok Bot 95, Muse 8, Gemini Spark 1, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent does nothing at all, sometimes not even showing its interface, until the user buys a subscription, and no free tier or trial exists; cases where a trial exists but is too short, or where the paywall was hidden before download, are excluded. |
| Existing subscription does not cover the agent | 97 | 98 | Grok Bot 55, Hermes Agent 12, Gemini Spark 8, OpenClaw 8, ChatGPT Dots 7, Muse 7 | Users who already pay for a related plan (the vendor's chat app, a social network premium tier, an IDE bundle, a model provider subscription) find they need a separate or additional subscription, API credits or a companion app to use the agent or plug that plan into it; cases where the user simply has no paid plan are excluded. |
| Agent reserved for top-priced tier only | 77 | 83 | ChatGPT Dots 35, Grok Bot 31, Gemini Spark 3, Muse 3, Hark 2, OpenClaw 2, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent is only available on a premium tier (e.g. $100–$1000 a month) and is left out of the cheaper paid plans users already have, with no low-cost way in; cases where an existing plan is the wrong product rather than too cheap a tier are excluded. |

### [Usage allowance size, exhaustion and reset wait](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.usage_cap.md)

2595 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly allowance exhausted within hours or days | 1084 | 1199 | Grok Bot 876, Muse 64, Hermes Agent 59, OpenClaw 44, Hark 22, ChatGPT Dots 11, Gemini Spark 5, Instinct 2, Poke 1 | The plan's included usage runs out far sooner than the billing window, often within hours or one to two days of a weekly cycle, even with light use or on top-tier plans. Out of scope: specific tasks or automations being blamed for the drain, and pools being split. |
| Background automations and single tasks silently drain quota | 324 | 343 | Grok Bot 241, Hermes Agent 29, ChatGPT Dots 20, OpenClaw 15, Muse 13, Hark 4, Gemini Spark 2 | Scheduled routines, frequent polling, email handling, multi-bot teams, restarts or one long task use up a large share of the quota without warning, sometimes before the task even finishes. Out of scope: general complaints that the allowance is small, with no cause named. |
| Long lockout waiting for fixed reset | 250 | 261 | Grok Bot 207, Muse 12, Hermes Agent 9, OpenClaw 9, Hark 7, ChatGPT Dots 5, Gemini Spark 1 | Once the quota is used up, the user is locked out for days until a fixed reset time and has no way to reset early or bank a reset for later, so work stalls mid-project. Out of scope: resets that happen at the wrong time or not at all. |

### [Agent spends usage on overhead and costly choices](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.token_efficiency.md)

977 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bloated context resent on every turn | 177 | 186 | Hermes Agent 74, OpenClaw 49, Grok Bot 46, Muse 5, ChatGPT Dots 3 | Covers each request carrying far more input than the task needs, such as the full chat history, every skill, tool schemas, injected memory, duplicated responses or poor prompt caching, so that even a 'hi' costs tens of thousands of tokens; excludes extra turns caused by loops or multi-agent traffic. |
| Agent-to-agent chatter and relay overhead | 175 | 183 | Grok Bot 120, Hermes Agent 21, OpenClaw 19, ChatGPT Dots 15 | Covers usage burned when agents message, consult, review or relay through each other (orchestrators, chief-of-staff hops, council meetings, bots replying to every channel message or triggering each other); excludes a single agent's own context size or looping. |
| Premium model used for routine work | 131 | 137 | Grok Bot 66, Hermes Agent 37, OpenClaw 16, ChatGPT Dots 9, Gemini Spark 2, Muse 1 | Covers the agent choosing or silently routing to expensive models or high-reasoning modes for simple, routine or heartbeat tasks, or not letting users pick a cheaper model; excludes overspending caused by how many tokens a turn carries. |

### [Plan contents, bundles and usage meters unclear](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.plan_clarity.md)

407 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unclear which subscription grants agent access | 83 | 85 | Grok Bot 66, Hermes Agent 8, Muse 7, ChatGPT Dots 1, OpenClaw 1 | The user can't tell which of several overlapping subscriptions from the same company or partners (chat plan, social premium tier, coding-tool plan, team plan) actually unlocks the agent or a given feature, so they buy the wrong plan or ask for one unified subscription; this excludes how much usage a plan includes and how plans combine. |
| Bundled plans and credits combine unexpectedly | 77 | 81 | Grok Bot 62, ChatGPT Dots 6, Hermes Agent 6, Hark 1, Muse 1, OpenClaw 1 | It isn't clear how bundled or multiple plans, top-ups, referral credits and on-demand spend add up, replace each other or are drawn down, or whether separate products share one quota pool, so users pay for extra usage that never arrives or get billed in ways they didn't expect; this excludes which plan grants access at all. |
| Plan usage allowances not disclosed per tier | 67 | 68 | Grok Bot 54, Hark 6, Muse 4, Hermes Agent 2, OpenClaw 1 | The provider doesn't publish how much usage, how many tokens or how much credit each tier includes, or how tiers compare (e.g. 'is the top tier 3x or 20x?'), so users can't judge whether an upgrade is worth it; this excludes meters inside the product that show usage already consumed. |

### [Buying, upgrading, cancelling and refunding go wrong](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.purchase_flow.md)

424 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paid upgrade does not raise usage limits | 65 | 69 | Grok Bot 49, Hermes Agent 6, Muse 5, OpenClaw 4, Hark 1 | The user pays for an upgrade, add-on, top-up or bundled plan and the agent's quota does not reset, increase or get provisioned (for example, plans that don't stack, limits stuck at 100%, an included tier that never shows up, or a subscription the agent doesn't recognise); card declines and other checkout failures where no payment went through are out. |
| Checkout fails or rejects valid payment methods | 64 | 68 | Muse 37, Grok Bot 16, Hermes Agent 5, OpenClaw 3, Hark 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | The user can't finish paying because cards are declined, only some regions or card types are accepted, the payment page errors, hangs or loops between sign-ins, or card verification breaks; cases where the payment succeeded but the plan or quota never arrived are out. |
| Unexpected, duplicate or unconfirmed charges | 61 | 70 | Grok Bot 24, Muse 17, Hark 12, Hermes Agent 4, OpenClaw 2, ChatGPT Dots 1, Poke 1 | The user is charged money they did not expect or approve, such as repeated or looping charges, charges on first launch or for age checks, one-click purchases with no confirmation, uncapped overage, or silent usage bills; disputes about whether to refund a charge the user knowingly made are out. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 3294 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
