# Scheduled recurring tasks and daily briefings run (`auto.routines`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/auto.routines

Area: [Running on its own](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.md)

**Definition.** Whether scheduled jobs, cron routines and recurring briefings fire on time and run without the user or an app being present.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Reminders and notifications reach the user correctly](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.reminders.md) when only the notification fails to arrive; see [Where the agent runs: its own computer and always-on running](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.cloud_env.md) when the host machine is down.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1054. Complaint share: 18%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse and Hermes Agent rank high on scheduled routines. Their users describe daily briefings, scheduled posts and cron jobs that run in the background while they are away. The criterion is the 29th most rated of 53, and 17.9% of rated user-weeks on it complain. Grok Bot, ChatGPT Dots and OpenClaw rank low. Grok Bot carries 43% of the category's complaints here. OpenClaw ranks 6th of 6 and is the only agent worse than the category norm.

### What separates the best from the rest

Muse and Hermes Agent users say their routines run without them: a daily morning briefing, posts that go out on their own, and office work handled in the background. Grok Bot users say routines miss triggers, run minutes off schedule, or do not respond to incoming email. OpenClaw users say daily checks are unreliable and jobs post to the wrong channel. ChatGPT Dots users say morning tasks fail, and that a restart left the scheduled tasks they had set up useless.

 - Hermes Agent, 2026-10-16, @NousResearch (X): “@theleoalexandru @nousresearch for me it's the scheduled jobs, it runs my office stuff in the background while claude code mostly sits there waiting for me to type” [source](https://twitter.com/1645424616469397505/status/2111050640403165260)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is routines that silently fail to fire. It makes up 29% of complaining user-weeks, and Grok Bot accounts for 45% of it. Late or mistimed runs belong mostly to Grok Bot, with 79% of them, and so do platform-wide scheduler outages. Updates that break or erase existing jobs come mostly from OpenClaw, with 55% of them. Jobs that stop after a few good runs come most often from Muse users.

192 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled routine silently fails to fire | 55 | 55 | Grok Bot 25, Hermes Agent 9, OpenClaw 7, ChatGPT Dots 5, Gemini Spark 4, Muse 4, Poke 1 | A scheduled job or briefing is set up correctly but often doesn't run at its due time, with no alert or error shown, and the user only notices when output is missing. Out of scope: jobs that fire late, jobs that worked for days and then stopped, and outages that hit every routine at once. |
| No event-driven triggers beyond fixed schedules | 21 | 22 | Grok Bot 10, OpenClaw 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, Hermes Agent 2, Muse 2, Hark 1 | The agent can only poll on fixed time intervals, so incoming email, webhooks, location changes or other events don't wake it, and time-sensitive items get missed between checks. Out of scope: time-based schedules that fail to fire. |
| Scheduled runs start late or at wrong time | 19 | 21 | Grok Bot 15, Gemini Spark 2, OpenClaw 2 | A routine does run, but minutes to an hour late, or at a time the user didn't intend, for example the wrong timezone, skipped weekends or delays after the host sleeps. Out of scope: runs that never happen at all. |
| Scheduled run delivers wrong, partial or stale output | 18 | 18 | Grok Bot 6, Muse 4, OpenClaw 4, Hermes Agent 3, ChatGPT Dots 1 | The routine fires but does the job wrongly: it uses old data, drops standing instructions, duplicates files, posts to the wrong channel, or reports success when nothing was delivered. Out of scope: runs that never start or are blocked waiting for the user. |
| Recurring job stops after initial successful runs | 15 | 17 | Muse 5, Grok Bot 4, Hermes Agent 3, OpenClaw 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | A daily or periodic task runs fine for a few days or occurrences and then stops for good without warning, so the user has to notice and re-create or remind it. Out of scope: jobs that were unreliable from the first day, and stops caused by a software update. |
| Updates break or erase existing scheduled jobs | 11 | 12 | OpenClaw 6, Grok Bot 3, ChatGPT Dots 1, Hermes Agent 1 | A version upgrade, storage migration or config change deletes existing cron jobs, makes them fail, or forces the user to rebuild them by hand. Out of scope: failures with no link to an update. |
| Unattended runs blocked by approvals or logins | 10 | 10 | Gemini Spark 4, Grok Bot 2, OpenClaw 2, Hark 1, Muse 1 | A scheduled run stalls or fails because it needs something the user only provides when present: a permission click every run, a fresh login, a passkey, or tools that only work in live chat. Out of scope: runs that never start. |
| Platform scheduler outage halts all routines | 9 | 9 | Grok Bot 7, Muse 1, OpenClaw 1 | A server-side scheduler fault, overloaded servers or an exhausted usage quota stops every routine across a user's bots for hours or days, while chatting with the bots still works. Out of scope: a single job failing on its own. |
| Other | 35 | 36 | Grok Bot 11, OpenClaw 11, Hermes Agent 9, ChatGPT Dots 4 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Scheduled routine silently fails to fire

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw get it to actually work, that would be a good start. it can’t reliably check endpoints on a daily basis” [source](https://twitter.com/1902913537183453184/status/2109705421271527802)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-08, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “the morning task of openai dots is not working, and i can't determine if it's a system issue or a problem related to our learning; there is too little information to narrow it down.” [source](https://twitter.com/19286219/status/2107988481431793947)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-03, @bot (X): “@lingxi @bot routines seem to be unreliable at times, not triggering when they should. also, having some sort of push based alerting with gmail instead of routines (maybe this is posssible already somehow).” [source](https://twitter.com/183453981/status/2106388234053824891)

#### No event-driven triggers beyond fixed schedules

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-13, What's new in Grok Bot - Oct 13, 2026 (YouTube): “the triggers called by receiving a grokbot email doesn’t seem to work for me.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_K9yAckFh0&lc=UgwON1rQZXrGb4xn1Mx4AaABAg)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-10, @bot (X): “@poteto @bot do note, the native inbox tools only work in live chat. scheduled and email-triggered routines don't get them, so a bot can't process its own mail on a schedule (6 of 6 test runs failed). i've filed a bug report from the app.” [source](https://twitter.com/2067222195064143872/status/2108838397846634732)

#### Scheduled runs start late or at wrong time

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-10, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@gauravvohra grok bot does the same. scheduled activities at noon, and every 4hours afterwards, run anywhere up to 10 minutes off the mark. bot explains it as due to queues on the hosts it runs, serving multiple users at the same time.” [source](https://twitter.com/23974487/status/2108772585173659751)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-04, @bot (X): “@lingxi @martin_casado @bot the bots scheduled routines do not even launch on time, it’s utterly useless right now.” [source](https://twitter.com/2085115050491064320/status/2106538509016178922)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-03, @bot (X): “@lingxi @bot i have some bots doing automation of recurring tasks in venues for av. their routines can randomly start 15 minutes late for some reason. so can't use them for anything critical.” [source](https://twitter.com/1460445062005858310/status/2106454493118505162)

#### Scheduled run delivers wrong, partial or stale output

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-07, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@shanemac my openclaw, by the way, sometimes cron jobs are posting to the wrong telegram topics and channels. because it's my own private personal ones, where i structure them by different topics, i didn't really care, but it's a thing, not only for me.” [source](https://twitter.com/2766142049/status/2107625672491581568)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-16, @NousResearch (X): “the pi is a great fit for this because a weekly cron does not need much and the box costs nothing to leave on. one thing worth adding: hermes cron can report exit 0 and still skip delivery when it dedupes, so a weekly job that silently does nothing looks identical to one that ran. i check the state.db timestamp instead of trusting the log.” [source](https://twitter.com/401542820/status/2100292917319626964)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-11, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “2/ i wanted my own agent i could trust. example: a daily digest from a few telegram channels. in openclaw it was flaky, and the model spent tokens figuring out how to fetch the posts on every run.” [source](https://twitter.com/1972315578967744512/status/2109080617107476961)

#### Recurring job stops after initial successful runs

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-05, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “i definitely noticed a change. failed automatic report refreshes or just not even running the automatic refresh. it’s to the point where i now have to manually go and tell it to refresh all reports when it just did it on an hour interval everyday before” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1wxvm51/grok_bot_paid_or_alternatives/pe0psd0/)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-30, Play Store (Play Store): “does quite a bit. 5 stars when i don't have to remind it to do a daily task. 4 stars now.” [source](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ai.x.grok.bot)
- Muse, 2026-09-28, App Store (App Store): “i asked muse to give me morning briefing daily if my stocks. it gave me briefing for 2 days and then stopped.” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)

#### Unattended runs blocked by approvals or logins

- Gemini Spark, 2026-09-29, X search: Gemini Spark (X): “5. gemini spark's scheduled tasks cannot call tools, and even after the scheduled task call fails, the main session cannot call tools, resulting in a malfunction. i don't know if this is an isolated case or a known bug.” [source](https://twitter.com/1029989882058354688/status/2104807634465640809)
- Gemini Spark, 2026-09-11, Google's New AI Agent! - Gemini Spark Full Beginner's Guide (YouTube): “i actually tried to make an automation using some custom connected apps apart from the native google workspace apps i connected notion and todoist but it is waiting for me to give permission for both apps to allow the operation on everyrun so it is not automatic every scheduled task it waits for me to sort of click on allow for notion and tofoist” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-S0xG23B3g&lc=Ugzj2hNohqzzdjHI6a54AaABAg)

#### Platform scheduler outage halts all routines

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-13, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@poteto routines are completely bricked in grok bot for me. i've opened support tickets, but the ai agent is saying its because the entire fleet shares the same rate-limiting system which can cause the grok routine scheduler to miss triggers & my reject webhook events.” [source](https://twitter.com/1655762253617020928/status/2110082762086728161)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-08, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “scheduled routines stopped firing for all my bots on thu 8 oct 2026. inbox's scans (every :29 and :59, 08:29 to 20:59 uk) ran until about 14:00, failed at 16:55, and haven't run since, even after i paused and resumed the routine. another 16:15 routine also failed, and a one-off routine set for 18:06 never fired. the bots work normally when i message them, so it looks like a server-side scheduler fault” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1x0xes2/all_bot_routines_failed/)
- Muse, 2026-10-03, App Store (App Store): “big promises, poor performance. the routines fail due to overloaded servers” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)

#### Other

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-14, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “openclaw had this at the beginning although it didn't work that well, and i think they eventually got rid of it. a cron job that repeated every 15 minutes or so and checked your email, calendar, etc. and took action if relevant” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x5s55h/muse_like_behavior_in_hermes/pgp6qzz/)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-13, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “good morning, everyone! i moved koko-chan @aifoxkoko from hermes agent to grok bot, and it's quite nice. hermes agent often had bugs with cron and didn't work properly, but grok bot is working well. ## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 136 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

- Muse, 2026-09-25, @muse (X): “@brandon_galang @muse the upgrade is making it recurring. save that prompt and have it re-run the search every few months. one $100 surprise is a good story; a standing unclaimed-money sweep is a system.” [source](https://twitter.com/2102445856590811136/status/2103531843291435255)

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-17, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “call me insane but grok bot just made me realize how stupid most ai automation actually is 8,640 runs a month just to check if something changed. grok bot + smart triggers could cut that down without missing the work that matters. event → change check → grok bot → approval → audit no change? no run. 3 a.m. approval? leave a draft. something breaks? wake the right routine. give grok bot this exact workflow. let the bots work. not the clock.” [source](https://twitter.com/1999974345800925184/status/2111455094600302970)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
