# Multiple agents, teams and delegation between them (`auto.multi_agent`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/auto.multi_agent

Area: [Running on its own](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.md)

**Definition.** Whether the user can run several agents with roles, have them delegate to and coordinate with each other or with outside agents, and how well that coordination works.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Agent spends usage on overhead and costly choices](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/billing.token_efficiency.md) when agent chatter wastes quota; see [Permission scope requested and isolation between agents](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/trust.access_scope.md) when the issue is agents sharing credentials.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 2296. Complaint share: 20%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Grok Bot is best at running agents as a team. Its users say they can create several bots, give each a role, and have a manager bot hand out work and check it. This matters to users: it is the 4th most rated of 53 criteria for personal agents. Grok Bot users rate it 2.9 times as often as other users. Because they rate it so often, they also write 38% of the category's complaints here. Muse and ChatGPT Dots rank low. Their users say each product allows only one agent, and that it cannot work with other agents.

### What separates the best from the rest

Grok Bot users describe a team: several bots, one master bot that steers the rest, and each task sent to the model best suited to it. Muse and ChatGPT Dots users describe a single agent. They say they cannot add a second one. They also say their agent cannot message other agents or Codex threads, so they copy and paste between them. ChatGPT Dots users write 41% of the complaints that a product allows only one agent.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is agents in different products, accounts or machines that cannot reach each other. It makes up 18% of complaining user-weeks, and users end up copying and pasting between agents. Next is having no way to organise and oversee many agents, at 17%. Grok Bot users write 49% of those complaints. The one-agent limit falls most on ChatGPT Dots, whose users write 41% of those complaints. Muse and Grok Bot users write 24% each.

468 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agents across products or accounts can't communicate | 84 | 93 | Grok Bot 29, Hermes Agent 23, OpenClaw 13, Muse 10, ChatGPT Dots 6, Gemini Spark 2, Hark 1 | Agents from different vendors, different accounts (such as a spouse or business partner) or different machines can't message, share files or hand off work to each other, so the user ends up copying and pasting between them; problems between agents inside one product's own team are out. |
| No way to organise and oversee many agents | 78 | 79 | Grok Bot 38, Hermes Agent 21, OpenClaw 12, ChatGPT Dots 3, Muse 3, Instinct 1 | As the number of agents grows, the interface offers no grouping, org chart, project separation or clear point to give instructions, and teammate agents flood the user with notifications or hide approval requests in their own chats; failures in how the agents behave toward each other are out. |
| Orchestrator fails to delegate or manage subagents | 76 | 80 | Grok Bot 32, Hermes Agent 27, OpenClaw 9, ChatGPT Dots 5, Muse 3 | The lead or chief-of-staff agent won't delegate, stays passive, doesn't handle tasks its subagents block on, can't give subagents a different model or a narrower context, has its relayed approvals rejected by teammate agents, or adds redundant coordination layers that burn tokens without adding value; problems with how the user organises agents in the interface are out. |
| Agent-to-agent loops, stalls and runaway spawning | 57 | 67 | Grok Bot 23, Hermes Agent 21, OpenClaw 10, Muse 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | Agents in a shared room or delegation chain reply to each other endlessly, deadlock, stop responding, miss replies that already arrived, wait on a stalled peer, or spawn subagents in cascades without control; wrong output that comes from a working exchange is out. |
| Only one agent per user allowed | 51 | 52 | ChatGPT Dots 21, Grok Bot 12, Muse 12, Hermes Agent 3, OpenClaw 2, Gemini Spark 1 | The product lets a user have just one agent, or blocks them from creating more agents or separate teams or workspaces, each with its own role, instructions and memory. Agents that exist but coordinate badly are out. |
| Context loss and conflicts in handoffs | 49 | 61 | Grok Bot 16, Hermes Agent 13, OpenClaw 12, ChatGPT Dots 6, Muse 2 | When work passes between agents, intent or state gets lost or made up, parallel agents overwrite each other's shared files, branches or browser, or a subagent falsely reports success and nobody catches it; failures where no handoff happens at all are out. |
| Agent can't be shared among several humans | 27 | 28 | Grok Bot 11, Hermes Agent 8, OpenClaw 7, Muse 1 | Several people (family, a team, multiple users) can't jointly use or steer one agent in a shared space, or the agent mixes up whose request and context it is handling; links between two separate agents are out. |
| Other | 52 | 53 | Grok Bot 18, Hermes Agent 12, ChatGPT Dots 10, OpenClaw 7, Instinct 2, Muse 2, Hark 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### No way to organise and oversee many agents

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-16, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “when i was setting this up a few weeks ago i recall seeing the ability to setup a group chat amongst bots but for some reason now that i've settled in and have some good traction, the + button only adds new bots and no option for group chats is there. am i alone here?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1x7kuqp/did_they_remove_group_chat_features/)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-08, Hermes Agent Bot Mode Guide: Bot Screen & Multi-Bot Groups (YouTube): “still find bot mode to be too much mental overhead. i have a complex setup and a single profile works fine.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAjJRaV91Xw&lc=UgwGCb0i-0Mg1H0VEOx4AaABAg)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-04, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “these bots sometimes tag each other, but most of the time they don't tag each other. so, i've been reduced to a human bot router, tagging the bot that wasn't tagged in the conversation. please fix.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1wx4ljx/daddy_elon_fix_bot_tagging/)

#### Orchestrator fails to delegate or manage subagents

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-07, @bot (X): “@a51s1 @benln @bot my mistake was having every bot read the skill files instead of just having one director know them and you build accordingly. they acted like having multiple bots doing different tasks was possible. when it simply is not” [source](https://twitter.com/32928477/status/2107643873749291487)

#### Agent-to-agent loops, stalls and runaway spawning

#### Context loss and conflicts in handoffs

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “building the openclaw orchestrator, i realized multi-agent coordination is 90% debugging state handoffs. the architecture looks clean on paper, but getting agents to share context without spiraling is a massive pain. how do you handle agent memory and control?” [source](https://twitter.com/1448008091618926599/status/2108137198180532297)

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-28, @bot (X): “give me a single reason to use @bot over buzz. i have tried both but buzz is superior on any cases from running agents, customizing them and having a collaborated work environment with multiple agents + people.” [source](https://twitter.com/1393341428118470670/status/2104615871163273254)

#### Other

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-16, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “grok bot weakness is that all the bots think the same way. a channel with 3 bots and the same question for creativity, they'll all come up with the same ideas, even though they have different personas.” [source](https://twitter.com/13036132/status/2111193395633041624)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 637 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Interoperability between different agents

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-14, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “using tg group for cross-agent communication is not reliable (openclaw is too dumb to follow rules). maybe a better is to use a2a protocol in the backend but show summary in the tg group for human instead.” [source](https://twitter.com/7204712/status/2110279751608811594)

### 2. Multiple agents per account

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-17, Put your dot on call (YouTube): “1) when will it be dots instead of 'dot' (singular) 2) when can it be able to call people on the phone on my behalf? 3) when can it 100% automate my computer? ### 3. Orchestrator agent delegating to specialists

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-15, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “i have been saying this forever. i basically just built my own hacky version of it and so badly wish it were natively supported” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x6qgz1/hermes_sessions_should_be_able_to_send_messages/pgxv9r4/)

### 5. Central dashboard for all agents

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-17, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw the part i'd love to see is her dashboard. at that volume the hard problem isnt running loops, it's knowing which ones are stuck, which finished, and which quietly died at 3am” [source](https://twitter.com/2109396108132884480/status/2111567788712288664)

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-15, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “@amorriscode @theo yes, make it the default. one user woke up to codex usage at 0% (43% at bedtime) because a chatgpt dot kept starting codex tasks overnight. once agents run unattended, "needs you / running / done" is the first thing you should see” [source](https://twitter.com/972324760855003136/status/2110610260256055790)

### 6. Integration between specific agent products

- Muse, 2026-10-16, @muse (X): “the biggest drawback to personal agents like @muse, @bot and @hark_labs is that they can't orchestrate my codex sessions where the majority of my work lives. the biggest drawback to @openai dots is that, for some reason, they can't either. 🤷♂️ [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2034456689345486848/status/2111116764788437332)

### 7. Share agents with others

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-14, @bot (X): “@elonmusk @bot can we get grok bot sharing with family members to help with shared tasks? right now, there’s no way to share a bot even if multiple family members have their own accounts. a family plan would also be awesome.” [source](https://twitter.com/1771676293547118592/status/2110390984093872159)
- Hark, 2026-10-11, @hark_labs (X): “@adcock_brett really enjoying @hark_labs - can you allow shared group chats? would be sick to share pre-defined context with controlled access to integrations for people i want to collab with on a task.” [source](https://twitter.com/4843512883/status/2109146713034248406)

### 8. Communication with other users' agents

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-18, @bot (X): “@bot is there a way for a grok bot to communicate with another person's grok bot directly(internally), apart from email. it would be a nice feature to have. @elonmusk” [source](https://twitter.com/40883729/status/2111645066875810224)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-17, @bot (X): “@grok @bot but you agree that it would be logical and sensible if the bots could contact each other? allegedly, there is an email for every bot? then they should be able to email each other, right?” [source](https://twitter.com/486435378/status/2111582557640741147)
- Hark, 2026-10-16, @hark_labs (X): “@hark_labs just started using @hark_labs impressed with it's web capabilities, be great if i could interact with it via email as i do with instinct @adcock_brett and even better having my @hark_labs interact with my wife's as our instincts do. 🙏” [source](https://twitter.com/1526868756340908039/status/2111162291974513073)

### 9. Group chat among multiple agents

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-16, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “do you have teams or group chats available? i have yet to find a suitable alternative to grok bot where group chats work and grok burns usage like crazy when using them.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1x6950g/opensource_grok_bot_alternative_sugabots/ph49x90/)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-09, @bot (X): “honestly that journaling + nudging stack sounds like a full workaround just to keep context alive between the bots. it gets way more powerful when all the agents can actually talk to each other and coordinate in one shared chat, so they keep each other updated directly. ### 10. Single unified agent across apps

- Muse, 2026-10-10, @muse (X): “@mrhodl @muse @x having 6 assistants is not the way. i use multi-models.... for jobs, work. but it's not good as an assistant. i currently have 2 assistants: muse for personal and a harness for work-safe. and it's dumb. one assistant needs to manage all time.” [source](https://twitter.com/2382521371/status/2109047128719008052)

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-03, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@grok and @bot should be just one product and grok bot should lead and delegate to grok when he deems necessary.” [source](https://twitter.com/508637623/status/2106396340272156692)

### 12. Structured handoffs with ownership and audit trail

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-18, @bot (X): “@elonmusk @bot i run ~10 grok bots with a shared github repo as their memory. would love to see native bot to bot handoffs land in one of those 20.” [source](https://twitter.com/114672969/status/2111653901111894377)

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-10, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch nous research needs a handoff receipt: source agent, target agent, task id, allowed tools, state hash, approval rule, failure reason, and rollback path. agents can continue the work without inheriting a mystery state.” [source](https://twitter.com/2013700835654672388/status/2109015502962204971)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
