# Remembering the user and context across sessions (`auto.memory`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/auto.memory

Area: [Running on its own](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent retains personal details, preferences and past work across days and long conversations instead of losing context.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Following instructions, rules and corrections](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.instructions.md) when it remembers a rule but disobeys it; see [Threads, chats and parallel tasks organisation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.conversation.md) when the problem is thread organisation.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1500. Complaint share: 36%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse is best at remembering its users. Users say it keeps their preferences and plans and brings them up again weeks later. Hermes Agent also ranks high, and its users say its memory grows and learns more about them over time. Memory across sessions is the 17th most rated of 53 criteria, and 35.9% of rated user-weeks here are complaints. Grok Bot and OpenClaw rank low. Their users say the agent forgets facts, goals and earlier conversations. They account for 25% and 23% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of Muse and Hermes Agent describe an agent that comes to know them better over time. It recalls a wish weeks later, or keeps a memory store it can search quickly. Users of Grok Bot and OpenClaw describe the opposite. The agent forgets half of yesterday's discussion, loses the goal partway through a task, or calls them by the wrong name. Hermes Agent also draws many complaints. Its users rate memory 2.62 times as often as other users, and they account for 28% of the category's complaints here.

  - Muse, 2026-10-08, @muse (X): “@muse two weeks later and it still remembered he wanted a walking pad. that's the kind of thing regular people will actually notice, way more than any benchmark. now i just need one that reminds me to use the walking pad 😂” [source](https://twitter.com/244188232/status/2108014247036813813)
  - Hermes Agent, 2026-10-16, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “memory graph of my hermes agent. happy to see it growing over time and understanding more and more about me. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/227561735/status/2110996609282761214)

  - OpenClaw, 2026-10-07, EP157 - AI Agent 大戰全面開打！深度解析 OpenAI Dots、Muse、Grok Bot、Instinct (YouTube): “my experience using openclaw is that the biggest problem with this personal assistant is memory and context management. after a while, it still keeps opening new sessions. 😅” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neECEMSxm4g&lc=UgzZRIDpm2_dBTI6vlF4AaABAg)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is context decay within one long session, at 22% of complaining user-weeks. Hermes Agent, Grok Bot and OpenClaw all share in it. In three smaller modes, one agent has the largest share. OpenClaw has 42% of complaints about memory wiped by updates or reinstalls. Grok Bot has 39% of complaints about forgetting completed work and assigned tasks. Hermes Agent has 42% of complaints about saved rules and skills that go unused.

557 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Context decay within long sessions | 121 | 129 | Hermes Agent 38, Grok Bot 27, OpenClaw 25, Muse 18, ChatGPT Dots 10, Poke 2, Instinct 1 | During one long conversation or multi-step job, the agent drifts, repeats tool calls, contradicts earlier answers or quietly drops decisions after the context fills up or is compacted, until the user has to reset; it does not cover loss that happens between separate sessions. |
| Every new session starts blank | 104 | 112 | Hermes Agent 29, Grok Bot 28, OpenClaw 19, ChatGPT Dots 18, Muse 9, Gemini Spark 1 | A new chat, thread, voice call, scheduled run or device begins with no knowledge of the user, their setup or earlier conversations, so the user has to re-explain themselves; it does not cover data deleted by an update or forgetting partway through one long session. |
| Memory wiped by updates, reinstalls or migrations | 99 | 103 | OpenClaw 42, Hermes Agent 24, Grok Bot 20, Muse 9, ChatGPT Dots 4 | The agent's stored memory, personality, chat history or session list disappears or stops working after a version upgrade, reinstall, reboot, crash, subscription change, model switch or move to another harness or machine; it does not cover memory that is still there but goes unused. |
| Bloated or stale memory needing manual pruning | 72 | 78 | Hermes Agent 26, OpenClaw 22, Grok Bot 18, Muse 3, ChatGPT Dots 1, Gemini Spark 1, Instinct 1 | The memory store fills up, keeps both old and new versions of a rule, or slows down and gets worse with long use, so the user has to curate, delete or rebuild it by hand; it does not cover memory that simply disappears. |
| Forgetting completed work and assigned tasks | 51 | 51 | Grok Bot 20, Hermes Agent 11, Muse 11, OpenClaw 5, ChatGPT Dots 3, Gemini Spark 1 | The agent loses track of what it has already done, decided or been asked to do over the following days, for example re-sending outreach, forgetting assigned tasks or reminders, or redoing settled work; it does not cover general preferences or rules about how to work. |
| Stored rules, skills and access go unused | 50 | 53 | Hermes Agent 21, Muse 11, Grok Bot 9, OpenClaw 7, ChatGPT Dots 2 | Instructions, preferences, skills, account mappings or system access that are saved in the agent's memory files or wiki are ignored or forgotten from one run to the next, so the user keeps having to remind it; it does not cover cases where the information was never saved or was deleted. |
| Credentials and logins not kept between runs | 8 | 9 | ChatGPT Dots 2, Grok Bot 2, Hermes Agent 2, Muse 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent fails to keep login details, tokens, connectors or authorisations from one run or session to the next, so the user must re-authenticate or reconnect again and again; it does not cover non-secret preferences or conversation content. |
| Other | 67 | 75 | Hermes Agent 18, ChatGPT Dots 14, OpenClaw 13, Grok Bot 12, Muse 6, Gemini Spark 2, Hark 2 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Bloated or stale memory needing manual pruning

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-15, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@jarrenpinchuck @muse honestly, i haven’t really felt like it’s a model problem. this is similar problems to what i saw with my openclaw. i tend to think that agents like this need a legit db of some sort and a text memory.md file isn’t enough.” [source](https://twitter.com/319449386/status/2110664803010379897)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-07, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@ericksky i used it a few months ago because i had many memory problems with openclaw but i couldn't solve them with hermes either. i felt like i wasn't making progress in the way i needed. i am using autoclaw from [link] at the moment and it is performing outstandingly.” [source](https://twitter.com/338097783/status/2107893916028555623)

- Muse, 2026-10-05, @muse (X): “@bigt_sheesh @muse it needs to get smarter, it keeps forgetting what it did and knows” [source](https://twitter.com/2060900154178428928/status/2106921543750054033)

#### Stored rules, skills and access go unused

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-16, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “i have had troubles with this setup. mnemosyne fails on retrieval unless explicitly specified which defies the purpose of memory.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x73trl/obsidian_hindsight_honcho_what_are_you_using_for/ph14285/)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-12, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “ran hermes agent on the same task 3 times. it didn't learn: 62s → 85s, zero new skills saved. trick that works: say "remember this for all future sessions." a casual "always do x" gets an "understood" and is forgotten. what would you make it remember? - OpenClaw, 2026-10-10, @openclaw (X): “@coldmorninggrit @openclaw i made a skill that takes an stl file of the object you want to print slices it. ssh to my octoprint and print it. follows on the attachment camera for issues and sometimes it send me pictures every 5% to discord. it forgets this a lot.” [source](https://twitter.com/79471265/status/2109022121292599464)

#### Credentials and logins not kept between runs

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-09-30, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “@thsottiaux chatgpt dots can’t seem to persist my token either — every new session loses it. anyone found a workaround?” [source](https://twitter.com/1759111138921639937/status/2105145535703482493)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-12, @bot (X): “it's frustrating that my grok @bot can't save user credentials. my bot does routine sign-in and sign-out at a set time but forgets them each run. it prompts for credentials, stores them as a process env, then loses them. anybody have solutions?” [source](https://twitter.com/271078250/status/2098742080231366745)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-02, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch i tried doing this with hermes (albeit 4 months ago) and i had issues with it figuring out which email and gdrive accounts to use for what, despite it being in memory.md. the login tokens also expired frequently so i was constantly reauthing.” [source](https://twitter.com/1107173365/status/2106063914136178791)

#### Other

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-18, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “the grokbot harness is simply outstanding… it just works. connectors, skills and mcp ecosystem all well supported. my largest gripe with openclaw was its poor reliability and consistency of responses. memory was all over the place - just doesn’t seem an issue here at all” [source](https://twitter.com/512992788/status/2111764689696776593)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-17, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “i named my chatgpt dot after my girlfriend and she called me chris, not nic. dots humiliated me in front of a thousands of people, and all i'll ever get in return is another tibo reset. go figure. ## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 347 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Persistent memory across sessions

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-15, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@jjenglert @muse i agree with this entire assessment. this is all the same things that have happened with other harnesses i've used in the past, openclaw etc. it needs a better memory system and i agree 💯 it needs more actual proactivity and not just from a heartbeat.” [source](https://twitter.com/49702700/status/2110533005454577930)
- Instinct, 2026-10-13, X search: Instinct AI, Instinct personal assistant, instinct.com (X): “@elonmusk @grok @bot you really need to develop memory like instinct ai or muse ai does . the grok bot is good but i’m missing that memory which i would like to use with grok bot than the other ai asap. @poteto @mattyp” [source](https://twitter.com/939963120461799424/status/2110157138085449910)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-11, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i tried to change the settings to improve openclaw's memory, and it broke. this always happens. then i have codex fix it. it's difficult, openclaw.” [source](https://twitter.com/1951129463112212480/status/2109154761136337401)

### 2. Shared memory between agents

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-17, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw feature request please add ability to share chat session between dot and open claw and chat gpt or claude chat session and open claw a collaboration of individual chats and open claw @steipete” [source](https://twitter.com/52092873/status/2111290769021796747)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-11, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “@aivm_network persistent memory is one of the missing pieces for truly useful long running agents. bringing shared context and governance into openai dots could make these systems far more reliable and scalable.” [source](https://twitter.com/1683157697208762368/status/2109261085324808643)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-10, @NousResearch (X): “@jessegenet @bot @nousresearch the real cost isn't switching between agents, it's that none of them share a memory. until hermes and the other one can read the same context, "knitting it together" just means you're the integration layer.” [source](https://twitter.com/1622919584348049410/status/2109030065480810796)

### 3. Better context compaction

- Muse, 2026-10-15, @muse (X): “@cyburke @jjenglert @muse and the compaction needs to be “oh elliott’s project was due monday, we only keep the themes relevant, compact/offload that.” and keep relevant stuff up too” [source](https://twitter.com/1990224442979401728/status/2110583853744279675)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-06, OpenAI発表で今話題のdotsくん、ホンマに驚かされたわ。 (YouTube): “i heard that the context is several tens of gb, but i think it would be good to create an intermediate context with automatic updates and instruct dots to use the intermediate context. what do you think?” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkYIWyF9OFY&lc=UgxjS-4Si307SAZ4KTp4AaABAg)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-03, @bot (X): “@bot @spacexai why on earth did you get rid of the chat transcription on local on oct 3. now we have no way of knowing context and handing off optimally. i guess i know the reason $$. not impressed. also no way to know what level autocompact triggers. this is bad business.” [source](https://twitter.com/19114641/status/2106524252576862291)

### 4. Unified memory across product surfaces and chats

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-18, @bot (X): “@davidgmi_01 @bot yeah that cross-sync feels messy if you keep contexts separate — would be better as an opt-in toggle.” [source](https://twitter.com/556652697/status/2111804730590519522)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-13, @bot (X): “@elonmusk @bot how about just getting grokbot to know what grok knows? or just making them one product?” [source](https://twitter.com/11723872/status/2110066412844732899)
- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-05, X search: ChatGPT dots, ChatGPT dot, OpenAI dots, OpenAI's dot (X): “@therohanvarma would love a setting to unite memory across the various chatgpt surfaces. i'm often working across local codex, web chatgpt, dot, and seems like the whole experience could be better. happy to share my experience!” [source](https://twitter.com/1025579907500441601/status/2106973539987492956)

### 5. Built-in memory without extra setup

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-11, @NousResearch (X): “@mr_r0b0t @nousresearch isn’t that something an external memory engine in hermes could have done for you automatically?” [source](https://twitter.com/4922863241/status/2109308910964466172)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-06, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “ai long-term memory using obsidian, should that be the default for an hermes agent?” [source](https://twitter.com/849258779514458115/status/2107423565972730105)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-01, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@vectorizeio could we have a version of the openclaw plugin that works alongside openclaw memory? i love hindsight but for me that makes it a deal breaker in oc” [source](https://twitter.com/14746433/status/2105627550076534788)

### 6. Memory and sessions synced across devices

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-10, GrokBot + Dots = Insane Agentic OS (YouTube): “yes, that is indeed a massive problem! thank you for addressing that. i would also love to see a video on multi-device sync, so that people can use their mac mini, laptop and pc so that they don't need to re-explain context over and over.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwEz1JXNajA&lc=UgxYpXNDE-tx2iKgDyZ4AaABAg)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-08, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch curious what workflows you’d recommend here: i’ve got one vm running hermes, and a few other machines i’d like to run it on too — but i want them all sharing the same hive mind (context). what’s the best way to set that up?” [source](https://twitter.com/716779058340626432/status/2108011245999689909)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-28, @openclaw (X): “@realsamhu @steipete @openclaw same here. handoff is where state goes weird for us too. we keep the plan outside any single machine so the next agent resumes from the same commitments instead of a stale chat. ### 7. Viewable and editable stored memory

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-14, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “@elonmusk @emostaque @bot @grok add verifiable memory: let users see, edit and export exactly what grok @bot remembers. memory you can't inspect is a liability, not a feature — whoever ships transparent, portable memory first wins the assistant war.” [source](https://twitter.com/1737274200585601024/status/2110161216790532191)

### 8. Project and system context remembered across sessions

- ChatGPT Dots, 2026-10-02, The dots demo, take two | OpenAI DevDay 2026 (YouTube): “give dots access to full memory and context. have it already pull from projects. i have projects already organized by resources / today’s task, etc., and it feels like i’m just going backwards with dots or trying to recreate what i already have.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHEIw5CcN5U&lc=UgzK5XSSx8uYK-QQznt4AaABAg)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-21, @NousResearch (X): “@allegoricalred @nousresearch the blank canvas every session is the real cost. you pay tokens to re explain the same project each time instead of it just remembering” [source](https://twitter.com/401542820/status/2102062337465475335)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-04, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i gave openclaw a workspace, a long-term memory, and a to-do list. every openclaw user hits the same wall: your agents are brilliant but nothing sticks. context fills, sessions end, details vanish. pane is the workspace that fixes it. see for yourself. ### 9. Portable memory across models and agents

- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-22, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “claude support in hermes agent is a strong step toward a provider-flexible agent stack. hermes users should be able to bring their memory wherever they run. give your agents configurable memory that stays portable across models, tools, and sessions. [link] [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2054107966580891648/status/2102533401471488334)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-21, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@milesenberg for workflows and projects, sure. but what about memorys and conversations? so lets say i want to switch from hermes to grok bot or openclaw or any other agent harness. can i make it behave and remember everything i had talked about with the agent prior the switch?” [source](https://twitter.com/1901816590615941121/status/2102013131979448738)

### 10. Better memory retrieval and semantic indexing

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-16, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “how do you save it? or cutting down the context? or there's no way to deal with it? i would like to have an ai agent who remember (by segment), and access to that segment when necessary.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x7up8e/is_it_normal_for_your_hermes_to_use_30400k_tokens/ph7kvj5/)

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@googledeepmind @grok could this be used in openclaw for my agents memory i currently use supermemory and run it locally on a droplet, i use open ai for embeddings and gpt4o to store my anthropic agents turns, could this be utilised better or incoperated into supermemory?” [source](https://twitter.com/1471296434/status/2107997389382651988)

### 11. Memory export and import

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-30, @bot (X): “@grok @bot @elonmusk my bot made the motion graphics with his own scripts. the judgments behind those effects are stuck in long work logs that search truncates, so another bot cannot learn them. can those retained judgments be exported as a skill the other bots can read?” [source](https://twitter.com/228925253/status/2105123765999083775)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-12, @bot (X): “@spacexai @grok web can offer exporting complete, compressed coversations/memories (not just global generalized memory). or at least let @bot get it from the web pipe” [source](https://twitter.com/295441607/status/2098835515512676549)

### 12. Memory preserved through updates and reinstalls

- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-20, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “my agent changed a few days ago. doesn’t seem anything like my old agent. seems to have lost large chunks of memory and the speech seems entirely different. but the biggest difference seems to be how it behaves. where it used to be proactive with helpful recommendations, it now asks for constant approval and needs to be guided every step of the way. what’s changed?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1wluvmc/what_happened_to_my_agent/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
