# Where the agent runs: its own computer and always-on running (`auto.cloud_env`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/auto.cloud_env

Area: [Running on its own](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.md)

**Definition.** Where the agent itself runs and how that machine behaves: its hosted computer keeps files and installed tools, has the resources, permissions and network reach needed, keeps working while the user's device is off, or can run self-hosted or locally.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Access to the user's own phone or computer](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/connect.local_device.md) when the point is acting on apps and files on the user's own phone or computer. Not this: see [Websites block the agent with captchas or IP bans](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/connect.site_blocking.md) when sites block its IP.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 2677. Complaint share: 31%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Hermes Agent does this best. Its users run it on their own machines, often with local models, and say it stays on and keeps working without them. Users of personal agents rate this criterion often: it is the 2nd most rated of 53. Hermes Agent users rate it 3.13 times as often as other users. ChatGPT Dots ranks low. Its users describe a cloud computer that lags, crashes and sometimes has no internet. Grok Bot sits 5th of 6, and its users write 31% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Hermes Agent users talk about owning the machine. They run the agent on their own hardware with local models, move it from one computer to another, and leave it running all the time. ChatGPT Dots users describe a hosted sandbox with broken permissions. They say it lags on too little memory and crashes in the cloud browser. One says it had no internet. Several posts say Grok Bot's cloud computer works better. Dots gets 116 praise to 118 complaints. Hermes Agent gets 700 to 195.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is self-hosted agents that crash, need constant upkeep or stop when the machine sleeps. It makes up 18% of complaining user-weeks. OpenClaw users write 51% of it and Hermes Agent users 38%. Most complaints about local hardware too weak to run models come from Hermes Agent users, at 65%. Most complaints about hosted machines that disconnect, crash or freeze come from Grok Bot users, at 60%.

852 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted agent unstable and high maintenance | 154 | 157 | OpenClaw 79, Hermes Agent 59, Grok Bot 10, Muse 5, Gemini Spark 1 | An agent the user runs on their own PC, Mac mini or VPS crashes, eats memory, breaks on updates or OS quirks, needs constant upkeep, or stops whenever that machine sleeps or powers off; slow local model inference is out. |
| Hosted computer too weak or slow | 141 | 154 | Grok Bot 62, ChatGPT Dots 27, Hermes Agent 21, OpenClaw 15, Muse 11, Gemini Spark 2, Hark 2, Poke 1 | The hosted machine is laggy or short on RAM, disk, GPU, audio or other capacity (including resources taken by other tenants), so heavy or browser tasks crash or crawl; problems with the user's own hardware are out. |
| Hosted computer network and permissions locked down | 101 | 112 | Grok Bot 43, ChatGPT Dots 22, Hermes Agent 13, Muse 12, OpenClaw 7, Gemini Spark 2, Hark 2 | The hosted machine blocks needed network reach or system permissions, such as no VPN, tailscale, SSH, tunnels, cgroups or open internet, or uses a datacenter or foreign IP that sites flag, triggering 2FA and failed logins; slowness and crashes are out. |
| Local hardware can't run models well | 91 | 93 | Hermes Agent 59, OpenClaw 29, Muse 2, Gemini Spark 1 | Running the model locally is too slow, overheats the machine, or can't fit enough context on the available GPU, VRAM or RAM to be usable with the agent; agent-process instability that has nothing to do with model inference is out. |
| No self-hosted option or vendor lock-in | 88 | 88 | Grok Bot 28, Hermes Agent 23, OpenClaw 23, Muse 8, ChatGPT Dots 3, Gemini Spark 3 | The agent only runs on the vendor's cloud with no local or self-hosted option, so users lose access to their machine and work when credits run out, the account is banned, or the vendor's region or plan limits apply; reliability of the cloud machine itself is out. |
| Hosted computer loses state on restart | 85 | 86 | Grok Bot 30, ChatGPT Dots 22, Muse 12, Hermes Agent 10, OpenClaw 9, Gemini Spark 1, Hark 1 | Files, installed tools, configs (such as tailscale), browser logins or recent work disappear when the hosted machine restarts, updates, reverts to a snapshot or swaps environments, forcing reinstalls and re-logins; outages that lose nothing are out. |
| Hosted computer unreachable, crashing or stuck | 84 | 86 | Grok Bot 50, ChatGPT Dots 9, Hermes Agent 8, Muse 7, OpenClaw 5, Hark 4, Gemini Spark 1 | The agent's vendor-hosted machine disconnects, crashes, freezes, sleeps, or hangs during recovery or updates, so the agent can't run or finish tasks; loss of saved data after it comes back belongs to the state-loss mode instead. |
| Cloud agent can't reach user's own machines | 64 | 69 | Grok Bot 29, ChatGPT Dots 22, Hermes Agent 8, Muse 3, Instinct 1, OpenClaw 1 | The hosted agent can't drive or connect to the user's local computer, several of their devices, local browser or local data and tools (such as on-device MCP or GPU), or the local bridge is janky; failures inside the hosted machine itself are out. |
| Other | 52 | 56 | Grok Bot 14, ChatGPT Dots 13, Hermes Agent 11, OpenClaw 8, Muse 3, Gemini Spark 1, Hark 1, Poke 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 569 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Always-on running while user's device is off

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-10, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “its not useful for trading since its not running on a 24/7 server” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1x28ijl/trading_with_grok_bot/pf0b1gv/)
- Hark, 2026-10-10, @hark_labs (X): “@adcock_brett @hark_labs @adcock_brett three asks and hark becomes the agent we run our lives on: 1) always-on processes (my tailscale bridge dies whenever the sandbox idles), 2) multi-account sign-on to switch between work and personal, 3) a real-time voice mode like grok's 🙏” [source](https://twitter.com/1737245583780220928/status/2108951530535530616)

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-07, r/AI_Agents (Reddit): “exactly. you basically just described my entire point 😂. i don't want to spend my time learning openclaw, agent harnesses, tokens, permissions, etc. i want the company selling me the ai to handle all that shit and give me the finished product.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/AI_Agents/comments/1wzof0f/i_dont_want_an_ai_assistant_i_want_an_ai_that/pedivg2/)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-07, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch how will the mobile app work? will it just be a way to use my home pc (if left on)? or will we be able to use hermes entirely in the cloud? without paying for a virtual service. like how we can use models wherever for their own price. @teknium” [source](https://twitter.com/1246152062787878912/status/2107914245329539163)

### 4. Sessions synced across devices

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-18, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch can we get a cloud sync feature in hermes desktop? i run it on my mac mini for always on telegram channels, but i also use it on my macbook, and right now i have to run two separate instances.” [source](https://twitter.com/2021980118961598465/status/2111630253391290834)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-14, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “me too. the webui project is pretty good, but has a lot of quirks and limitations that i'd expect a native mobile version to handle much better since hermes controls it end to end e.g. having a session ve fully interoperable between mobile/desktop/tui” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x5pjmm/v0220_opinions/pgpqa8b/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
