# Talking to the agent (`ask`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/ask

Area of 6 criteria. How easy and pleasant is it to give the agent requests and get replies?

Criteria: [Reaching the agent through messaging apps](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.channel.md), [Speaking with the agent by voice or call](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.voice.md), [Threads, chats and parallel tasks organisation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.conversation.md), [Response and task completion speed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.speed.md), [App screens, layout, rendering, localisation and stability](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.app_client.md), [Avatar, personality and tone of replies](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.persona.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 6914. Complaint share: 50%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse is the best agent to talk to, but its lead does not hold across the area. Muse ranks high on fast replies, personality and keeping chats organised. It ranks low on voice conversations, bugs and working inside messaging apps. Hermes Agent ranks high on voice and on messaging apps, and Hark ranks high on bugs and personality. ChatGPT Dots ranks 8th of 8 on the area. It ranks low on every criterion except voice conversations, where it ranks high. Talking to the agent makes up 22.3% of what ChatGPT Dots users rate, against 13.1% for users of other agents.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is slow replies to simple messages. It covers 362 user-weeks, spread across Muse, Grok Bot and ChatGPT Dots users. Next is the lack of a two-way voice conversation, and 71% of those complaints come from Muse users. App crashes and cluttered desktop navigation follow. Hermes Agent users write the largest share of both, including 51% of the navigation complaints.

### [Reaching the agent through messaging apps](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.channel.md)

176 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agent missing from user's preferred messaging app | 53 | 53 | Hermes Agent 16, Muse 15, Grok Bot 8, ChatGPT Dots 5, Hark 5, OpenClaw 2, Instinct 1, Poke 1 | The agent can't be reached at all in the channel the user already lives in (for example iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS, Discord, Teams, Telegram or X DMs), so the user has to open a separate app or an unwanted platform; this covers missing channel support, not channels that exist but break or are hard to set up. |
| Messages silently fail between agent and channel | 27 | 27 | OpenClaw 11, Hermes Agent 6, Grok Bot 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, Instinct 2, Hark 1, Muse 1 | A connected channel stops passing messages in one or both directions, for example the bot shows typing but never sends, replies are generated but not delivered, input is ignored, messages get cut off, or it breaks after an update; this excludes slow but working replies and first-time setup failures. |
| Single chat thread can't organise agent work | 24 | 24 | Hermes Agent 17, OpenClaw 5, ChatGPT Dots 1, Grok Bot 1 | The flat chat format can't handle real agent use: no separate threads or persistent sessions, tasks get mixed together, multiple agents are hard to manage, long work gets lost in scrollback, and there's no place to see files, crons or approvals, so users ask for a dedicated app; this excludes individual features that work worse in chat than in the native app. |

### [Speaking with the agent by voice or call](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.voice.md)

690 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No two-way voice conversation | 228 | 236 | Muse 163, Grok Bot 18, Hark 18, Hermes Agent 12, OpenClaw 9, ChatGPT Dots 7, Instinct 1 | The user wants to speak to the agent and hear it speak back, but the agent has no live voice or conversation mode, only typed or dictated text; this excludes a missing read-aloud for text replies and voice modes that exist but work badly. |
| Voice calls fail to connect or drop | 95 | 99 | ChatGPT Dots 63, Muse 20, Grok Bot 12 | Phone or voice calls with the agent never get answered, fail to connect, cut out when the phone locks, hit a hidden time limit, or audio stops partway through a session; this excludes calls that connect but sound poor or misunderstand speech. |
| Unnatural or unconfigurable agent voice | 81 | 82 | Grok Bot 34, Muse 25, ChatGPT Dots 13, Hermes Agent 4, Hark 3, Instinct 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent's voice sounds robotic, weak, choppy or like a speakerphone, handles non-English languages poorly, or offers no voice choice, no samples, or a chosen voice that keeps resetting; this excludes calls that drop or fail to connect. |

### [Threads, chats and parallel tasks organisation](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.conversation.md)

549 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single thread forces unrelated topics together | 109 | 116 | ChatGPT Dots 38, Muse 26, Grok Bot 17, OpenClaw 9, Hermes Agent 8, Gemini Spark 3, Hark 3, Instinct 3, Poke 2 | The agent gives the user only one main chat (or one thread per bot), so separate projects, life areas and parallel tasks pile up in the same stream and the user can't split, branch or start a fresh topic; this excludes problems sorting or finding chats when several chats do exist. |
| Losing track of parallel tasks and bots | 87 | 88 | Hermes Agent 32, Grok Bot 22, ChatGPT Dots 18, OpenClaw 7, Muse 6, Gemini Spark 1, Hark 1 | While several tasks, sub-agents or bots run at once, the user can't see which bot they are talking to, the status of each task, or which results are finished, can't start a parallel sub-task, or finds that switching between bots or profiles fails; this excludes organising the chat list itself. |
| No way to organise many chats | 76 | 79 | Hermes Agent 25, Grok Bot 23, Muse 10, ChatGPT Dots 8, OpenClaw 7, Gemini Spark 2, Hark 1 | When the user has many sessions, bots or chats, the product gives them no folders, projects, labels, tabs, grouping, working renames or auto-titles, so the list gets messy and confusing; this excludes searching for a specific past chat and the lack of multiple chats altogether. |

### [Response and task completion speed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.speed.md)

927 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sluggish replies to simple conversational messages | 362 | 370 | Muse 104, Grok Bot 89, ChatGPT Dots 80, Hermes Agent 50, OpenClaw 24, Hark 8, Gemini Spark 4, Instinct 2, Poke 1 | The agent takes many seconds to a few minutes to answer a greeting, quick question or one-line request that a plain chatbot answers almost at once; replies that arrive hours later or not at all belong to the extreme-delay mode, and slow multi-step work belongs to the task-duration mode. |
| Simple tasks running far longer than expected | 193 | 205 | ChatGPT Dots 45, Grok Bot 39, Hermes Agent 37, Muse 34, OpenClaw 16, Hark 15, Gemini Spark 6, Instinct 1 | Small or routine jobs, such as a bug fix, a booking, a calendar cleanup, a small game or a skill registration, take tens of minutes to hours, far longer than a human, a direct model chat or a rival tool would need; slowness that is specifically on-screen computer or browser control is out. |
| Harness overhead slower than direct model use | 108 | 112 | Hermes Agent 63, Muse 15, Grok Bot 10, OpenClaw 10, ChatGPT Dots 9, Hark 1 | The same model is much slower inside the agent than in its native chat or a lean CLI tool, because of extra harness steps, tool and skill calls, verification passes, token-heavy processing, or poor support for the user's chosen provider or local model; slowness the user blames on the agent's own hosted service with no comparison is out. |

### [App screens, layout, rendering, localisation and stability](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.app_client.md)

1082 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App crashes, freezes or fails to launch | 205 | 217 | Hermes Agent 75, Muse 39, Grok Bot 38, OpenClaw 29, ChatGPT Dots 11, Hark 10, Gemini Spark 2, Poke 1 | The app or desktop client crashes, hangs, sits on a loading or setup screen, can't be closed, or breaks after an update (for example on certain input methods or network setups); general slowness while the app keeps working is out. |
| Cluttered, confusing desktop navigation | 195 | 202 | Hermes Agent 100, OpenClaw 48, Grok Bot 23, Muse 10, ChatGPT Dots 6, Gemini Spark 5, Hark 2, Poke 1 | The desktop or web interface is too dense, noisy or poorly organised, so users can't find sections, switch sessions, scroll the sidebar, or reach settings without extra clicks; complaints that the app is functionally broken, rather than hard to navigate, are out. |
| Chat content renders blank or garbled | 117 | 123 | Grok Bot 42, Hermes Agent 34, Muse 20, OpenClaw 9, ChatGPT Dots 6, Hark 3, Gemini Spark 2, Poke 1 | Messages, images, videos, tables or responses display as black boxes, empty space, partial images or missing media, or overlap, duplicate or leave loading indicators behind (including tables that won't scroll), so the user can't see what the agent produced; slow loading of content that does show correctly is out. |

### [Avatar, personality and tone of replies](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.persona.md)

332 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Condescending, hostile or preachy tone | 63 | 65 | Muse 32, Grok Bot 14, Hermes Agent 6, OpenClaw 4, ChatGPT Dots 3, Poke 2, Hark 1, Instinct 1 | The agent sounds rude, mocking, snarky, aggressive, defensive, passive-aggressive or lecturing, or pushes political and moral views on the user; personalities that are only bland or only too playful are excluded. |
| Flat, robotic or lost personality | 63 | 67 | Grok Bot 29, ChatGPT Dots 8, Muse 8, OpenClaw 7, Hermes Agent 6, Hark 3, Gemini Spark 2 | The agent comes across as dry, boring, stiff or customer-service-empty, or its earlier humour and character disappeared after an update or retrain; tones that are actively rude or overly cutesy are excluded. |
| Unappealing or broken avatar customisation | 48 | 49 | Muse 24, Grok Bot 10, Hermes Agent 7, ChatGPT Dots 4, OpenClaw 3 | Complaints about how the avatar looks or animates (ugly, childish, static, redesigned for the worse) or about custom avatars and outfits that won't generate, stay saved or render correctly; voice and text tone are excluded. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 2891 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 9. Spoken voice replies from the agent

- Muse, 2026-10-14, Play Store (Play Store): “muse is a wonderful thing. it takes your workload down so you have more time to do other things. the only downfall is it doesn't have a voice. i would like for it to talk so i don't have to look at my screen and read it. maybe in a future update.” [source](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.aura)
- Muse, 2026-10-12, App Store (App Store): “ voice option would be great, especially when they’re responding. there’s no sound.” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)

- Hark, 2026-10-10, @hark_labs (X): “@adcock_brett loving @hark_labs but can we please have better performance on low end devices? it laggs a bit rn” [source](https://twitter.com/1289980460244713473/status/2108750508445794757)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-09, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “all is in the title... it gets a little better after a hermes restart, but just creating a new session takes 2/3s, i get freezes loading medium length sessions etc. cpu is barely registering hermes so i don't know what it's doing...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x1ka5z/hermes_desktop_slow_as_hell/)

### 11. CarPlay and in-car support

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-18, @bot (X): “feature request for @bot: let my main bot call me on my real number when something important comes up. and the other way round too, a number i can call my bot on, or proper carplay support so i can start a voice call while driving. ## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
