# Buying products, orders and purchase judgment (`act.shopping`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/act.shopping

Area: [Getting tasks done](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent finds, compares and orders goods well, including deal finding, carts, checkout and sensible purchase choices.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Asks before acting: too little or too much](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/control.approval.md) when it buys without consent; see [Web research, monitoring and summarising information](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.research.md) when it only compares prices without buying.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 826. Complaint share: 19%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse is best at shopping and ordering, and Grok Bot is second. Their users rarely describe a purchase that stalls at checkout. Hark is where buying breaks down, mostly at the point of payment. Shopping makes up 1.5% of what users of AI personal agents rate. Hark is 3rd of 3 ranked agents. Its users rate shopping 11.02 times as often as other users, and they write 48% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

No agent ranks high or ranks low here. Of the three ranked agents, Muse and Grok Bot score better than the category norm and Hark scores worse. Hark users describe an agent that finds the item and fills the cart but cannot finish the purchase. Payments get declined, virtual cards break and checkouts throw errors. Complaints about Muse and Grok Bot are spread across other problems. Retailer sites block the agent, or it picks items that miss what the user wanted. Some Muse users also say it overpays.

- **Ranks high**: no agent
- **Ranks low**: no agent

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a checkout or payment that fails to complete. It accounts for 32% of complaining user-weeks, and Hark users account for 86% of it. Hark users also lead the complaints about slow orders that take many turns and about the agent acting on wrong details without confirming. Retailer sites blocking the agent is mostly a Muse problem, with 58% of that mode. So is overpaying, where Muse users write 88% of the complaints.

158 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout or payment fails to complete | 51 | 56 | Hark 44, Muse 3, ChatGPT Dots 1, Grok Bot 1, Hermes Agent 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent finds the item and fills a cart but cannot finish the purchase, because the payment is declined, a virtual card breaks, the checkout throws errors, it refuses to buy, or it offers no fallback such as letting the user enter their own card; site-level blocking before checkout is out. |
| Retailer sites block the agent | 19 | 19 | Muse 11, Grok Bot 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, Hark 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent cannot get into or finish work on a shopping site because of bot blocks, captchas, repeated human checks, no access from its cloud browser, or account bans for automated use; this covers access being refused, not a purchase that was reached and then failed. |
| Ordering is slow and needs many turns | 18 | 20 | Hark 11, Muse 5, ChatGPT Dots 1, Grok Bot 1 | Simple orders take far longer or need many more back-and-forth turns than doing them by hand (for example 45 minutes for a grocery order or 12 messages to buy a remote), even when they eventually succeed; total failures caused by blocking are out. |
| Acts on wrong details without confirming | 17 | 17 | Hark 10, Muse 6, Grok Bot 1 | The agent carries out a buying or selling step with wrong or unapproved details, such as a made-up shipping address, accepting a lowball offer, sharing a home address, ruining listings or saying a task is done when it is not; payment failures and bad product choices are out. |
| Product picks ignore user needs and taste | 12 | 12 | Muse 6, Grok Bot 5, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent chooses or recommends items that do not match what the user asked for or likes, such as the wrong gender, odd or unwanted products, poor brands, bad snack picks, or wrong quantities; this is about the fit of the choice, not its price. |
| Overpays instead of finding best price | 8 | 9 | Muse 7, Grok Bot 1 | The agent pays or recommends a higher price than is easily available, for example by taking the first search result, using resellers or fee-charging intermediaries, or favouring its own platform's sellers over cheaper official or rival sources; picking the wrong kind of product is out. |
| Cannot locate specific or nearby items | 5 | 5 | Grok Bot 3, Hark 1, Muse 1 | The agent fails to find a particular, discontinued, niche or locally available product (for example something to buy in person tonight) that the user asked it to source, even though no site blocked it. |
| Stale or fabricated deal and stock info | 2 | 3 | Muse 2 | The agent reports deals, links, listings or in-store stock that are expired, broken, made up or unchecked, and presents them as valid; failing to find any matching product at all is out. |
| Other | 27 | 28 | Hark 10, Muse 9, ChatGPT Dots 3, Grok Bot 2, Gemini Spark 1, Hermes Agent 1, OpenClaw 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 81 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 12. Simpler checkout without forced login

- Muse, 2026-09-09, @muse (X): “👀 @muse almost got me to make a purchase and the experience was not bad! two things holding it back: - forced login (this one's on shopping sites, not meta). guest checkout is table stakes in the ai shopping era. - latency. the longer it takes, the worse the experience gets. overall, cool product. congrats @alexandr_wang @finkd!” [source](https://twitter.com/1148669001406529540/status/2097753318122734023)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
