# Web research, monitoring and summarising information (`act.research`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/act.research

Area: [Getting tasks done](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.md)

**Definition.** How well the agent searches the web, monitors prices, stock or news, and summarises findings usefully.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Creating writing, images, video and social posts](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.content.md) when the result is a piece of writing, media or a post to publish. Not this: see [Wrong facts, hallucinations and careless mistakes](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.accuracy.md) when the findings are factually wrong. Not this: see [Booking appointments, reservations, travel and tickets](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.reservations.md) or [Buying products, orders and purchase judgment](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.shopping.md) when the search ends in a booking or a purchase. Not this: see [Unprompted suggestions, insights and check-ins](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.proactive.md) when nobody asked for the analysis. Not this: see [Scheduled recurring tasks and daily briefings run](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.routines.md) when the problem is a scheduled run not firing.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1988. Complaint share: 6%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Hark and Grok Bot rank high at research and monitoring. Users say Hark pulls the details they need out of websites and keeps watching until something changes. They say Grok Bot is strongest on news and on posts from X. Research is the 6th most rated of 53 criteria, and it draws few complaints: 5.5% of rated user-weeks complain. Gemini Spark ranks low, last of 7. Its users rate research 2.31 times as often as other users, and their posts describe old news, searches that fail and lost results.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of Hark and Grok Bot describe an agent that keeps searching until it has the answer. Hark users say it finds employees and contacts, pulls data out of fund documents and watches ticket sites through the night until bookings open. Grok Bot users say it gathers large sets of cases on its own and is the best choice for anything tied to news and X. Gemini Spark users describe old news, results that are hard to read, searches that cannot connect and scheduled results that disappear.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest named mode is sources the agent cannot reach or read in full. It makes up 17% of complaining user-weeks, and Muse users file the most of it. Muse leads most other modes too. Its users file 50% of the complaints about shallow research passed off as thorough and 54% of those about inaccurate results. Slow, costly research loops that never reach an answer come mostly from Grok Bot users, who file 57% of that mode.

112 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot reach or fully read sources | 19 | 19 | Muse 7, Hermes Agent 4, Gemini Spark 3, Grok Bot 2, ChatGPT Dots 1, Instinct 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent can't run web search at all, can't browse, can't get into login-gated or platform content (YouTube transcripts, Instagram, Telegram, Marketplace), or reads only part of the data (e.g. 25 of 500 songs, 4 comments); content it retrieves but handles badly is out. |
| Gives up on findable items too early | 14 | 15 | Muse 6, Grok Bot 4, OpenClaw 2, Hermes Agent 1, Poke 1 | The agent says something doesn't exist, can't be found, or must be searched manually (tickets, listings, quotes, known issues, smaller vendors) when a quick human search finds it; cases where the search tool is down or blocked from a source are out. |
| Shallow, generic research passed off as thorough | 14 | 14 | Muse 7, Grok Bot 6, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent delivers thin, bland, cookie-cutter or incoherent findings for research or deep-research requests, often without saying they are incomplete; results that are factually wrong or don't match the request are out. |
| Results that are inaccurate or ignore criteria | 13 | 13 | Muse 7, Grok Bot 4, Hermes Agent 1, Instinct 1 | Returned results are wrong, made up, scams, links to the wrong company, outside the user's filters, or worse deals than easy alternatives; results that are just old or just shallow are out. |
| Gathered content left unsummarised or hard to read | 7 | 7 | Grok Bot 3, Gemini Spark 2, Hermes Agent 2 | The agent collects feeds, papers or pages but stops before refining them, or gives choppy, cluttered, hard-to-scan summaries; failures to gather the content in the first place are out. |
| Monitoring and scheduled reports not timely | 7 | 8 | Muse 3, Gemini Spark 2, Grok Bot 2 | Price, stock, news or job watches only poll occasionally instead of live, don't alert when data is released, fail to refresh, or lose scheduled results; one-off searches are out. |
| Slow, costly research loops with no outcome | 7 | 7 | Grok Bot 4, Hermes Agent 2, Muse 1 | Searches or comparisons take much longer than alternatives or burn lots of tokens or usage without reaching a usable answer; fast answers that are simply wrong are out. |
| Stale or outdated information presented as current | 6 | 6 | Muse 3, ChatGPT Dots 1, Gemini Spark 1, Grok Bot 1 | The agent returns old news, finished live events, dead listings or out-of-date articles when the user asked for recent or live information; results that are current but wrong or irrelevant are out. |
| Other | 25 | 25 | Muse 6, Grok Bot 5, Hermes Agent 5, Gemini Spark 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, OpenClaw 2, Hark 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Shallow, generic research passed off as thorough

#### Results that are inaccurate or ignore criteria

- Muse, 2026-10-07, r/MetaAI (Reddit): “meta muse does not show correct job links when i ask it to apply for jobs? it returns weird company names when i ask it to search for jobs like "botpress" or "scriptrunner", one job shows "apple" but is a different company's posting when i click the link. also it just doesn't return the same job postings when i do a linkedin search with the same parameters. does anyone know how to solve this?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/MetaAI/comments/1x0blsm/meta_muse_does_not_show_correct_job_links_when_i/)

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-18, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch why is it that hermes with glm 5.3 running cannot even do simple google queries and confuses ‘dental clinic’ with ‘financial company’? is there a hidden switch somewhere to enable logic that i missed?” [source](https://twitter.com/946325443/status/2111896139041485096)

#### Monitoring and scheduled reports not timely

- Gemini Spark, 2026-09-09, X search: Gemini Spark (X): “@alexandr_wang gemini spark failed me for simple job search every monday. i might just try muse.” [source](https://twitter.com/1356334702085419016/status/2097757108758311314)

- Muse, 2026-10-02, Play Store (Play Store): “stock research could be better. it is better than chat gpt though. we should be able to pull real time data and muse should be able to ping us immediately once data is released” [source](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.aura)

#### Slow, costly research loops with no outcome

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-27, @bot (X): “i have been trying @bot to plan vacations, in some attempts when i let it make comparisons between different ways of getting around/accommodating, it spends a lot of tokens and many times we don't get anywhere.” [source](https://twitter.com/1984901/status/2104086618185617651)

#### Other

- Gemini Spark, 2026-10-03, X search: Gemini Spark (X): “@mikepat711 i agree. i've been using it since day one as well also i've found grok bot to be unbeatable in terms of search capability and getting exactly what i need filtered out none of the others have come even close to it - gemini spark, muse and claude. haven't tried the dot bots yet” [source](https://twitter.com/1013749216387256322/status/2106462222977532410)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 140 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Better web search quality and coverage

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-18, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@officialbbrooks @openai this was always the problem with openclaw and hermes. needs better search tools and background processes than what people tend to ship.” [source](https://twitter.com/12626542/status/2111855990522175925)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-13, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “i want my hermes to search deeper in web and in websites like (reddit, github, youtube, and the other social media) any idea or someone do the same think?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x4vtdp/best_way_to_improve_hermes_search/)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-20, @bot (X): “@elonmusk @bot today my feed is not working good it's giving me woke ideology instead of ai.... like i don't have time for that... and the search doesn't have history or smart search... trying to search for oppo x10 pro photo samples took me like 20 minutes...” [source](https://twitter.com/725402970/status/2101727608165519832)

### 2. Longer, deeper autonomous research sessions

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-10, r/hermesagent (Reddit): “i’m looking to set up an autonomous "deep research" pipeline inside hermes agent—similar to what openai deep research or gemini deep research does (iterative multi-query planning, scraping/browsing sources, fact synthesis, and generating a comprehensive structured report). i'm running hermes with good local ai model, can i do deep research?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1x28lbj/has_anyone_successfully_built_a_deep_research/)
- Muse, 2026-09-30, @muse (X): “@pierodismo @fedexsti @muse @neuramedia but it would be cool if this agent could create skills based on how i write, how i think about business, how i think about my professional career, and that if i tell it to look for events for today, it doesn't just do a simple search but is thorough and works as long as it takes.” [source](https://twitter.com/1390279217133363200/status/2105269145629589813)

### 3. Native understanding of video and image content

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-30, @bot (X): “@elonmusk @bot can @bot watch an educational/ training youtube video then repeat the steps laid out in the video?” [source](https://twitter.com/740368226832388096/status/2105248099941642523)
- Muse, 2026-10-10, App Store (App Store): “1. "wants real-time full k-line candlestick charts for stock analysis, including pre-market, after-hours and overnight sessions" 2. "wants improved voice features: fewer transcription errors in voice input and a phone-call feature" 3. "wants stronger video learning ability: extracting and deeply, comprehensively understanding video content, especially videos without subtitles"” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)
- Muse, 2026-09-26, App Store (App Store): “1. instagram access: let muse connect to and use instagram (browse, post, reply, manage dms) like other integrations. 2. messaging account: give muse its own messaging identity so it can chat with people directly, just like any other person. 3. media understanding: enable muse to actually understand videos and images — not just captions or thumbnails, but the real content inside them.” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)

### 4. Model benchmarks and real-hardware testing

- OpenClaw, 2026-09-12, El poder de OpenClaw 2.0 en local con Ollama (Sin pagar tokens) (YouTube): “carlos, can you try to push that hardware you have as a server to the limit with more models? coincidentally, i have similar hardware on my server. it would also be interesting to see its behavior with a larger context window and compared to the hermes agent.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDh2klQMDyU&lc=UgxpLsTU9DYr0Qlm3Ox4AaABAg)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-13, X search: Grok Bot, Grokbot, x.ai/bot (X): “i’d use grok bot as my personal ai model evaluator. new model drops it runs my usual coding/reasoning tests, compares the results with the models i already use, tracks cost + speed, and gives me a short “worth switching or not” report. basically automate the part of ai twitter i already spend way too much time on” [source](https://twitter.com/1846861204527996928/status/2099202264548450773)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-04, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch glad to see hermes/nous making local models easier to use. definitely a meaningful step forward. one limitation: recommendations seem based mostly on theoretical memory fit. the next leap is testing speed, context, compression and tool use on the actual machine before recommending a model.” [source](https://twitter.com/40104971/status/2095676148353003657)

### 5. Verifiable sources and fact-checking in research

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-08, @bot (X): “@bot can it monitor a thread and fact-check the claims against official sources? i've been tagging @grok with "is it true ?" under swedish politics posts for months. would love my bot to just watch them and bring back the receipts” [source](https://twitter.com/1257272912945373184/status/2108098311458623914)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-13, @bot (X): “@matthewberman @bot @spacexai my planned bot could be researcher validated a news on multiple sources present it with validated point facts and orginal and other clear outputs to user rather overwhelming” [source](https://twitter.com/1868529927181488128/status/2099189592146722817)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-09, @NousResearch (X): “@nousresearch search and fetch need two receipts here: the query + ranked snippets that found a source, then the exact page lines used for the claim. i’ve watched agents promote a relevant snippet into “proof” before the page was ever opened.” [source](https://twitter.com/828440649535873025/status/2097581001883226497)

### 6. Charts and visual data outputs

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-05, @bot (X): “@grok @ryandetrick @bot @grok build a year end visual chart showing a "range" using the low end average and high end average range.” [source](https://twitter.com/280086557/status/2107202211789066462)

### 7. Daily curated news digests

- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-11, Hermes Agent Jalanin Seluruh Hidup Gw (SETUP + CARA PAKE) (YouTube): “can the ai agent analyze trending news and assess the impact that will occur in the future and report it every day?” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jevlr9bH1C8&lc=UgwgAP9D2nXm1gwnhfN4AaABAg)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-08, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “i'm getting interesting topics from the rss content with hermes agent, but it doesn't summarize them, so i don't feel like reading. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1947591748039188480/status/2097137294365069474)
- Muse, 2026-10-09, X search: Muse from Meta, Meta Muse (X): “something missing from chatgpt for me is a tailored news feed i can interact with. meta muse did a great job with this. so, a content source would be great. an ai-tailored, ai-summarized, ai-curated feed that i can then drill down into and read while asking my ai questions. i don't have a great recommendation here. obviously x is off the table. openai has lots of content partnerships. maybe one of those publishers? reuters?” [source](https://twitter.com/1693585632965148672/status/2108583037403271410)

### 8. More real-world use case examples

- Hark, 2026-10-08, @hark_labs (X): “@johnmckeownn @bot @hark_labs i do wish these labs would use more common use cases. for example a friend sent me an amazon link. i gave the link to @hark_labs to order it and it did. tbf one of their examples was printing out an amazon return label.” [source](https://twitter.com/2629244664/status/2108227361741197391)
- Hark, 2026-10-08, @hark_labs (X): “@hark_labs yes, they can do it, but we all need lots of help finding those use-cases. hopefully you're going to make really good templated tasks that you can just switch on 😉” [source](https://twitter.com/162615017/status/2108017641092964775)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-10-06, X search: Hermes Agent, hermes-agent, Hermes Desktop (X): “look, i like hermes and obviously i’m not expecting an “in depth meta analysis of our users deployment of hermes agent across multiple sectors” but if yall can curate the user stories and cases towards professional use cases a bit more that would be neat! [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/830807896203997184/status/2107292336804053063)

### 9. Organizing saved research and reading lists

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-18, @bot (X): “@bot @dingyi @bot also, please help me check how many interesting and fun websites this blogger i follow has recommended in the past, record each website, and then write a key point worth noting to put into my study list, with a maximum limit of 20.” [source](https://twitter.com/821646138411458565/status/2111653860490256648)
- Grok Bot, 2026-10-07, @bot (X): “@notionhq @bot please save the original post link with each entry. a reading list full of summaries is hard to fact check later.” [source](https://twitter.com/2051888695100514304/status/2107747816529604673)
- Gemini Spark, 2026-09-02, Google Gemini Spark: 10 tareas para crear contenido (YouTube): “i am an engineering student and i would like to automate spark to search for and review scientific articles and help me organize the references well, whether with any reference manager like mendeley or zotero, scribbr. other activities would be to manage software like matlab.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE9CyEzB6gM&lc=UgyV9IVKqlzJiKSvS_l4AaABAg)

### 10. Real-time stock and price data

- Muse, 2026-10-02, Play Store (Play Store): “stock research could be better. it is better than chat gpt though. we should be able to pull real time data and muse should be able to ping us immediately once data is released” [source](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.aura)
- Grok Bot, 2026-09-30, @bot (X): “@leerob @bot sometimes the files on my bot’s computer get deleted for no reason at all and it has to go and redo work also for a feature, let it pull in stock graphs and data into the chat” [source](https://twitter.com/1586459501405900806/status/2105135892545286426)
- Muse, 2026-09-09, @muse (X): “@muse very disappointed, very few of the exciting features are actually ready. not many connections available, background work requires constant manual log-ins if there’s no connection. price watching polls daily no live watch of dynamic prices [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1992736226835607552/status/2097764961216815316)

- OpenClaw, 2026-09-28, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “automation idea i would absolutely use: a tiny openclaw agent that keeps a personal changelog. not “journal every thought.” more like: projects touched, decisions made, weird blockers noticed, loose threads created. at the end of the week it hands you the story of what actually moved.” [source](https://twitter.com/2024270544116600836/status/2104375645384200429)

### 12. SEO workflow and backlink checks

- OpenClaw, 2026-09-28, @openclaw (X): “@themattberman @openclaw @dataforseo when you are connected with google search console why can't run serp requests to check ranked pages as well as llm mention request to check competitor recommendation. next process to run backlink request to check ranked pages getting backlink. it's a simple ranking process” [source](https://twitter.com/1526222430942789633/status/2104499179846578631)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
