# Following instructions, rules and corrections (`act.instructions`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/act.instructions

Area: [Getting tasks done](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent does what was asked, obeys standing rules, understands the user's language and applies corrections instead of repeating mistakes or simply agreeing.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Stops short, or hands the task back](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.stops_short.md) for how many prompts a task needs. Not this: see [Asks before acting: too little or too much](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/control.approval.md) when it takes an outward action (send, buy, delete) without consent. Not this: see [Remembering the user and context across sessions](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.memory.md) when it forgets earlier context.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1207. Complaint share: 61%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Muse follows instructions best. Its users say it does what they ask, does nothing more, and handles corrections well. Hark and Hermes Agent also rank high. Following instructions is the 24th most rated of 53 criteria. Most posts about it are complaints: 61.5% of rated user-weeks complain. Grok Bot, OpenClaw and ChatGPT Dots rank low. Grok Bot users write 24% of the category's complaints here, the largest share of any agent. ChatGPT Dots ranks 6th of 6.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe an agent that understands what they mean without carefully worded prompts, then does it. Users of the trailing agents describe agents that agree with them and then do not change. Grok Bot users say it ignores rules it has already saved and repeats mistakes after being told. ChatGPT Dots users say it answers "yes you are right" and does not act. OpenClaw users say it does not follow rules and gives inconsistent results. Grok Bot has 179 complaining user-weeks against 85 praising ones.

  - Hark, 2026-10-12, @hark_labs (X): “i’ve tried lots of ai tools, agents, and coding assistants, but i can see @hark_labs becoming a top 3 ai very soon. been using it for a couple of days and i’m genuinely impressed. no need for perfect prompts, it just gets what you mean and gets it done asap i am impressed guys 👏” [source](https://twitter.com/1999450673977655303/status/2109717808292692089)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest named failure is a misread request, where the agent confidently does a different task. It makes up 16% of complaining user-weeks, and Muse users report 35% of these. Grok Bot has the largest share in two modes about rules: standing rules and preferences that are not applied, where its users account for 32%, and corrections the agent accepts and then repeats. Ignored stop commands are the smallest mode, but 45% of them come from Hermes Agent users.

747 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Request misread and wrong task performed | 120 | 123 | Muse 42, Grok Bot 29, Hermes Agent 19, OpenClaw 14, ChatGPT Dots 11, Gemini Spark 4, Hark 1 | The agent misunderstands what a request means and confidently does something different, such as running the wrong tests, changing the app when asked why the model is slow, or setting the wrong provider; this excludes cases where it understood the request but chose to go beyond it or skip parts of it. |
| Explicit prohibitions and scope limits overridden | 103 | 107 | Hermes Agent 27, Grok Bot 23, Muse 20, OpenClaw 20, ChatGPT Dots 9, Hark 3, Gemini Spark 1 | The agent does what it was told not to do or acts beyond the requested scope without permission, such as sending emails, deleting items, reading off-limits data, pushing to protected branches, rerunning stale tasks, or growing the project; this excludes failures to stop an action that is already running. |
| Correction acknowledged but mistake repeated | 96 | 99 | Grok Bot 28, Muse 26, Hermes Agent 19, OpenClaw 16, ChatGPT Dots 5, Gemini Spark 1, Poke 1 | After the user points out an error, the agent apologises, agrees, or promises to change, then makes the same mistake again or finds a workaround that keeps the behaviour the user rejected; this excludes errors the user never corrected. |
| Standing rules and preferences not applied | 90 | 93 | Grok Bot 29, Hermes Agent 22, Muse 13, OpenClaw 13, ChatGPT Dots 8, Gemini Spark 3, Instinct 2 | The agent fails to carry out persistent rules, profile or skill instructions, or stated user preferences (such as reply language, communication style, or preferred vendors) that were set earlier or saved in configuration; this covers rules that were set but are not honoured in later sessions, and excludes losing an instruction given earlier in the same conversation. |
| Requested action refused or deflected to user | 82 | 85 | Grok Bot 25, Hermes Agent 17, Muse 14, OpenClaw 14, Gemini Spark 6, ChatGPT Dots 4, Hark 2 | The agent declines a legitimate request, lectures or moralises instead of complying, stops at describing the problem without acting, or hands the work back to the user (for example 'do it yourself') even though it has the means to do it; this excludes requests it tries to do and gets wrong. |
| Parts of instructions silently skipped | 57 | 57 | Muse 18, Grok Bot 16, OpenClaw 13, Hermes Agent 6, Gemini Spark 2, ChatGPT Dots 1, Hark 1 | The agent carries out only some of the requested items, rules, or batch tasks (for example dropping some rules from a long list, trimming delegated tasks, or leaving out agreed components or commits) while reporting or implying the work is complete; this excludes openly refusing and doing an entirely different task. |
| Earlier instructions lost within a session | 29 | 31 | Hermes Agent 10, Grok Bot 8, ChatGPT Dots 5, OpenClaw 4, Hark 1, Muse 1 | During one conversation or multi-step task the agent loses track of what was just asked, drops the original plan, mixes up parallel requests, or forgets the first job once a second one arrives; this excludes rules stored across sessions and wrong readings of a single request. |
| Stop and halt commands ignored | 22 | 22 | Hermes Agent 10, OpenClaw 5, Grok Bot 4, Muse 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | The agent keeps running, looping, or posting after the user tells it to pause, stop, or end a goal, including endless tool-call or message loops that persist despite direct instructions; this excludes starting a forbidden action in the first place. |
| Other | 161 | 167 | Hermes Agent 50, OpenClaw 36, ChatGPT Dots 30, Grok Bot 21, Muse 16, Gemini Spark 4, Hark 4 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 221 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 3. Apply corrections instead of repeating mistakes

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-09, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “one of my bots keep calling me “babe” even though i told it not to and when i asked it to purchase something for me, it bought some else too… questioning the efficiency and grokbots abilities 😂” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1wzpu39/grok_bot_becoming_more_and_more_opaque_with_each/pevw0tv/)

### 5. Rules persist across long sessions

- Muse, 2026-10-12, @muse (X): “@alexandr_wang hi, i am using [link] and for some reason @muse keeps on forgetting the rules and i have to keep on reminding it i am not having this issue with any other bot can you please look into it” [source](https://twitter.com/2109757437280407552/status/2109791481036775734)

### 6. Clarify ambiguous requests before acting

- Muse, 2026-10-16, Play Store (Play Store): “it's not very intelligent. it miss pins your calendar and it makes assumptions. it shouldn't be making assumptions. that's what humans do.” [source](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.aura)

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-13, @bot (X): “@n3r4 @grok @bot put this in the bot brief: “if i didn’t assign a job, ask one clarifying question and stop.” agents do what the description allows.” [source](https://twitter.com/2094048043523846144/status/2099242774402884055)

### 7. Follow skill workflows consistently

- Gemini Spark, 2026-10-05, X search: Gemini Spark (X): “gemini. when you select "use now" from the spark skill list, it switches to a regular chat ui instead of spark and says "i can't do that." what is that specification? #gemini #spark” [source](https://twitter.com/63060996/status/2106907142091583825)

- Gemini Spark, 2026-10-04, X search: Gemini Spark (X): “it is now possible to call the skills created with gemini spark in the regular gemini chat by using @, but when called and used in gemini, even in enhanced trial mode or with prompts that are not complex, there is a strong tendency to ignore some parts of the instructions, and i am dissatisfied that executing skills in gemini spark is significantly more stable...” [source](https://twitter.com/1910724619625259008/status/2106545070270984390)

### 8. Stop duplicate messages

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-30, @bot (X): “@leerob @bot have them stop saying the same thing three or more times or leaking soft invent off into the chat to the point you can’t read it. i think 25% of my spend is tokens wasted on noise and getting things repeated and asking to turn soft invent off off” [source](https://twitter.com/2878668644/status/2105170839662657647)
- Hermes Agent, 2026-09-30, @NousResearch (X): “anyone else seeing hermes send the same response twice in the desktop app? @nousresearch @teknium” [source](https://twitter.com/1522382283990253568/status/2105123826376044809)

### 9. Fix messaging chat bugs

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-07, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@shanemac my openclaw, by the way, sometimes cron jobs are posting to the wrong telegram topics and channels. because it's my own private personal ones, where i structure them by different topics, i didn't really care, but it's a thing, not only for me.” [source](https://twitter.com/2766142049/status/2107625672491581568)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-27, @openclaw (X): “@antseed @farm_ion @nousresearch @openclaw thanks but always showing us to join tg while already join” [source](https://twitter.com/1868926526043148288/status/2104139428511846462)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-01, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw and since february, it couldn't get the ordering of messages right - second message arrives before the first, on telegram. was fixed, then came back, fixed, came back.” [source](https://twitter.com/1732880437893062657/status/2094895689243197579)

### 10. Self-healing and self-repair

- Grok Bot, 2026-10-11, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “is there a solution for this? maybe a command to gb to fix itself?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1x39zhy/grok_bot_computer_keeps_freezing/)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-03, @openclaw (X): “@colinsolvely @openclaw i want to see better self improvement tbh that's why i'm thinking of switching to hermes” [source](https://twitter.com/2043405410112016384/status/2095302845541331224)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-09, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i'm running multiple scheduled tasks across vms using hermes (and previously openclaw). one recurring failure: when the underlying model changes, e.g. codex from gpt-5.5 to gpt-5.6 sol scheduled jobs start erroring until i manually update the config. these systems should self-heal. if a model is deprecated or renamed, the agent should detect it, migrate to the replacement, and keep running.” [source](https://twitter.com/248963276/status/2097601229488636362)

### 11. Complete tasks instead of refusing

- Grok Bot, 2026-09-27, @bot (X): “@kevin_logan @bot @muse fair, honestly the model itself matters way more to me than the bot wrapper. i just want sol to stop arguing with me about a one-line fix at midnight” [source](https://twitter.com/1152636974/status/2104135609296036274)

### 12. Act on requests made by voice

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-11, @openclaw (X): “@bootstrap42 @openclaw voice confirmations not going through is a rough bug. asmi ai leans into the same hands-free idea, a life-admin assistant that makes the calls and sends the messages for you.” [source](https://twitter.com/1833345605831176193/status/2109307405704261750)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-11, @openclaw (X): “voice mode in @openclaw is a breakout feature. talking to my ai agents hands-free feels like the future. one thing holding it back: saying "yes" to a voice confirmation doesn't go through yet (#140738). the fixes look close. can't wait to see them land. game changer. 🦞” [source](https://twitter.com/30861898/status/2109268848918605987)
- Muse, 2026-09-28, Meta Muse Is Incredible - 5 Features You Need To Try (YouTube): “i like that podcast idea. the phone call thing is a bit rough though. it should not answer the side question and after it gets an answer, it sounds as if it considered the question immaterial. would be good if we could train it better.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC_-9TD3TfA&lc=Ugx8Xw8Exx1SU49Cxo14AaABAg)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

Here’s My Verdict (YouTube): “this was similar to my experience and what i’m doing. i gave muse a business task, something fiddly and muse went to long way around and left off some important components we had discussed with no reason. i gave the same fiddly task to dot and it found a more efficient way to do it. so yes, using muse for personal and social media and dot for business. great video!” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk6ZMBWUcNk&lc=UgxIipdLR35m-z3W6yx4AaABAg)
