# Operating a browser or desktop by clicking (`act.computer_use`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/act.computer_use

Area: [Getting tasks done](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.md)

**Definition.** How competently the agent drives a graphical browser or desktop by itself: clicking, typing, navigating pages and apps, and choosing efficient routes. The post is about the operating, not the result.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Web research, monitoring and summarising information](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.research.md) when browsing is only how it found information. Not this: see [Response and task completion speed](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/ask.speed.md) when the point is only how long it takes. Not this: see [Websites block the agent with captchas or IP bans](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/connect.site_blocking.md) when a site blocks it. Not this: see [Where the agent runs: its own computer and always-on running](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.cloud_env.md) when the machine itself is limited.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 738. Complaint share: 39%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Hark, Muse and Gemini Spark drive a browser best. Users say these agents read pages, click through interfaces and fill in forms by themselves. Users rate this less than most things: it is 1.3% of what users of AI personal agents rate. Grok Bot, OpenClaw and ChatGPT Dots rank low. ChatGPT Dots is last of 7 and the only ranked agent below the category norm, with 47 complaints to 26 praise. Grok Bot users write 27% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe an agent that runs its own browser and gets on with the job. It logs in, finds a setting the user could not find and clicks through pages without help. Users of the trailing agents describe controls that break down. ChatGPT Dots often cannot connect to the user's browser at all. Grok Bot types into the wrong field and reloads pages, which loses its progress. OpenClaw users mostly compare it with Muse and say it falls short.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is an agent that cannot connect to the user's own browser or desktop at all. It covers 65 of 289 complaining user-weeks. ChatGPT Dots has the most of these, followed closely by Hermes Agent and Grok Bot. Grok Bot leads three modes: slow step-by-step control, failed clicks and form inputs (40%), and messy tabs and sessions. Muse accounts for 50% of complaints about acting without checking the screen.

289 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot attach to the user's own browser or desktop | 65 | 70 | ChatGPT Dots 19, Hermes Agent 14, Grok Bot 13, OpenClaw 7, Gemini Spark 6, Muse 5, Instinct 1 | The agent can't take control of the user's local browser, desktop or apps at all: the feature is missing, it says it "can't click" in the user's window, or setup never connects it to the user's existing browser and logins. Slow or clumsy control once it is connected belongs elsewhere. |
| Painfully slow step-by-step screen operation | 49 | 49 | Grok Bot 16, Hermes Agent 13, ChatGPT Dots 7, Hark 7, OpenClaw 4, Muse 2 | The agent drives the GUI too slowly to be useful, with seconds to minutes per click, screenshot-and-reason loops, simple tasks taking many minutes and heavy token use, and it doesn't speed up on repeated tasks. Clicks that miss or fail outright are out. |
| Fails basic clicks and form inputs | 45 | 45 | Grok Bot 18, Hermes Agent 15, Muse 9, ChatGPT Dots 1, Gemini Spark 1, Hark 1 | The agent can't carry out elementary interactions on a page it can already reach: it misses or ignores the obvious button, can't type into a modal or field, can't press save, submit or place order, can't scroll, can't handle pop-ups, or clicks the wrong spot because of display-scaling issues. Blocks from captchas or bot detection are out. |
| Messy browser windows, tabs and sessions | 19 | 20 | Grok Bot 8, Hermes Agent 5, ChatGPT Dots 4, Hark 1, Muse 1 | The agent mismanages its browser environment: it opens tabs it never closes, crashes Chrome, launches a fresh session without the user's cookies, can't share the browser across several agents, or grabs the user's foreground screen while they work. Not being able to connect at all is out. |
| Stopped by captchas, bot blocks and complex logins | 17 | 17 | Gemini Spark 4, Hark 4, Muse 3, Grok Bot 2, OpenClaw 2, ChatGPT Dots 1, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent's browsing is halted by captchas, Cloudflare-style bot blocking, OAuth or secure login flows, and heavy single-page or social apps, so it can't get past the gate. Ordinary button or field failures on pages that load normally are out. |
| Clumsy handoff and manual takeover controls | 12 | 12 | Muse 4, ChatGPT Dots 2, Grok Bot 2, OpenClaw 2, Gemini Spark 1, Hermes Agent 1 | When the user takes over the agent's browser or remote screen to log in or help, basic input fails: paste is disabled, the pointer doesn't respond, the keyboard or IME doesn't work, or mobile form entry is fiddly, or the user can't open the view without asking the agent first. Problems with the agent's own clicking are out. |
| Acts without checking what is on screen | 8 | 9 | Muse 4, Grok Bot 2, ChatGPT Dots 1, Hermes Agent 1 | The agent reads or acts on a page before it has loaded, doesn't look at the current UI state, or reports a GUI action as done when it never happened (for example, claiming every post went through when most failed). Actions that fail visibly and are reported honestly are out. |
| Other | 76 | 78 | OpenClaw 21, Grok Bot 18, Hermes Agent 13, ChatGPT Dots 12, Muse 6, Hark 4, Gemini Spark 2 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Clumsy handoff and manual takeover controls

- Muse, 2026-09-28, App Store (App Store): “browser use is a bit janky and could be improved. i want to be able to access the browser at anytime instead of requesting the agent hands access over. secure entry fields don't work as seamlessly as in grok bot (vault is not quite as quick and not really the same)” [source](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/muse-from-meta/id6760173601)

#### Acts without checking what is on screen

- Muse, 2026-09-21, @muse (X): “i would agree that at times it doesn’t seem to try. i’ve reported this multiple times to the team. it tends to just assume without verification. hopefully a problem that will get solved. for example, it needed to pay a bill for me. it couldn’t figure out it needed to click the button that said, pay the bill. i instructed it and it seemed to remember in the future” [source](https://twitter.com/1425445846628319234/status/2101872528423612601)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 180 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
