# Writing code and building apps or websites (`act.build`)

Feedback Bench, personal agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/#/criterion/act.build

Area: [Getting tasks done](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent writes, fixes and deploys code, websites, apps and dashboards that work.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Where the agent runs: its own computer and always-on running](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.cloud_env.md) when its machine lacks tools or persistence; see [Creating writing, images, video and social posts](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/act.content.md) when output is media rather than software.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1875. Complaint share: 10%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Hark is the best personal agent at building working code and apps. Its users, including people with no coding experience, describe whole apps and websites made from a plain request, and none of them complain here. Building code is the 9th most rated of 53 criteria, at 3.4% of what users rate. Muse, OpenClaw and ChatGPT Dots rank low. Their users say these agents struggle with real software work. Grok Bot is 2nd of 6, but its users write 41% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Hark's users describe finished software: a point of sale system for a shop, a music producer app, a rebuilt personal website, home widgets and panels. Across 65 rated user-weeks there are no complaints. Users of the low-ranked agents describe the opposite. Muse users say it fails to edit or build websites and makes poor 3D models. OpenClaw users call it brittle and unfit for serious development. ChatGPT Dots users say it works poorly with code and that it is better to use Codex or Claude directly.

  - Hark, 2026-10-15, @hark_labs (X): “hark is amazing at web design, i gave it examples of what i wanted and the direction. and in less than 10 minutes alongside cursor my entire personal website has been remade. @hark_labs @adcock_brett you all have outdone yourself with this model. - OpenClaw, 2026-09-11, DHH on OpenClaw, Grok Bot, and personal AI agents | Lex Fridman Podcast Clips (YouTube): “they just don’t do much that claude code or codex or whatever can’t already do for you. they are brittle as hell, especially open claw. they feel like magic when they work, but i wouldn’t let them do anything important, especially writing code.” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLHnljpwnFw&lc=UgyRIfMXtmyHdOGNgs94AaABAg)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest complaint is about scale. Users say the agent handles scripts and prototypes but fails on full apps, so they go back to dedicated coding tools. This mode makes up 44% of complaining user-weeks, led by Grok Bot users. Grok Bot accounts for 64% of complaints that the agent hands building to other tools and 56% of complaints about buggy code. Muse leads complaints about crude visual and 3D output, with 42%.

196 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Falls short on complex, production-grade projects | 87 | 87 | Grok Bot 33, Hermes Agent 21, Muse 15, OpenClaw 13, ChatGPT Dots 4, Gemini Spark 1 | The agent manages simple scripts or prototypes but fails at full multi-file apps, SaaS products, deep repos or real software work, so users go back to dedicated coding agents. Out: specific bugs in otherwise finished output and missing developer tooling. |
| Offloads building to other tools or users | 22 | 22 | Grok Bot 14, ChatGPT Dots 5, Muse 2, Hermes Agent 1 | Instead of building itself, the agent hands the work to Cursor, cloud coding agents or a CLI, cannot drive the vendor's own builder, or tells the user to fetch credentials or do steps manually. Out: users choosing on their own to pair the agent with another tool. |
| Generated code ships with functional bugs | 18 | 18 | Grok Bot 10, Hermes Agent 3, Muse 3, OpenClaw 2 | The agent delivers code, apps or models that look finished but break when used: broken forms, crashes, blank screens, dozens of bugs, or physical designs missing needed features. Out: the agent being unable to run or deploy the code, and output that works but looks bad. |
| Cannot compile, run, test or deploy | 15 | 16 | Grok Bot 4, Muse 4, Hermes Agent 3, ChatGPT Dots 2, Gemini Spark 1, OpenClaw 1 | The agent writes code but its environment cannot execute, compile, debug, push or deploy it, because of no runtime, broken internet access, push failures or unsupported toolchains, so the build is never verified or shipped. Out: code that runs but behaves wrongly. |
| Slow, looping builds that burn usage | 15 | 18 | Hermes Agent 5, Grok Bot 4, Muse 3, ChatGPT Dots 2, OpenClaw 1 | Building takes hours, gets stuck in tool-call loops or endless refactors, or uses up the plan's credits or tokens before the app is done. Out: how good the finished output is, and usage complaints that have nothing to do with building. |
| Poor visual, 3D and design output | 12 | 13 | Muse 5, Grok Bot 4, Gemini Spark 2, ChatGPT Dots 1 | Front-end, landing pages, animations, game art, sprite atlases, Three.js scenes or Blender/3D assets come out crude, clipped or amateurish even when they technically work. Out: functional bugs and failures to run. |
| Missing developer controls and workflow features | 10 | 10 | Grok Bot 4, Hermes Agent 2, Muse 2, OpenClaw 2 | The coding experience lacks controls developers expect, such as choosing the model or reasoning level, viewing reasoning, diffs, git issue/worktree integration, local terminal access or sharing a built app. Out: problems with the quality of the code itself. |
| Edits ignore instructions or cause regressions | 7 | 7 | Grok Bot 4, Muse 2, OpenClaw 1 | On follow-up requests the agent repeats the same output while claiming it improved it, makes the result worse, debugs lazily, needs the same request several times, or breaks a working pipeline with a small tweak. Out: first-attempt bugs where no fix was asked for. |
| Other | 11 | 11 | ChatGPT Dots 2, Grok Bot 2, Hark 2, Muse 2, Gemini Spark 1, Hermes Agent 1, Poke 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 115 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
