# Spins, loops or gets stuck without progress (`work.stuck_loops`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.stuck_loops

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** The agent repeats attempts, loops endlessly or spirals on a problem without converging.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Stops mid-task or answers instead of acting](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.premature_stop.md) for stopping early. Not this: see [Asks the user versus guessing](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.clarifying_questions.md) when the fix was to ask the user.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1403. Complaint share: 96%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

OpenCode and Pi are the best at not getting stuck. OpenCode users say the agent rarely needs a second try and no longer falls into thinking loops on hard problems. This criterion makes up 1.6% of what users rate. When users raise it, they almost always complain: 95.7% of rated user-weeks are complaints, the 4th highest share of 63 criteria. Cursor and OpenAI Codex rank low. OpenAI Codex users write 41% of the category's complaints here, and Cursor users posted no praise at all.

### What separates the best from the rest

OpenCode users say the agent gets the work done on the first or second try, with no delays or loops, even on hard problems. Users of Cursor and OpenAI Codex describe sessions that go nowhere. They say the agent loops in circles on edge cases and version mismatches, repeats the same thoughts for hours, runs tests without end, or never finishes when a task splits into many subtasks. Even OpenCode gets more complaints than praise here, at 212 to 14.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is the fix-break cycle, at 26% of complaining user-weeks. The agent patches and retests the same bug, often breaking something new each round, and never reaches a working result. OpenAI Codex users account for 53% of it. Planning and analysis paralysis comes next, at 22%, and OpenAI Codex leads it too. Google Antigravity leads re-reading the same files without acting, at 47%.

1350 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fix-break cycles that never converge | 351 | 373 | OpenAI Codex 185, Claude Code 80, OpenCode 29, Google Antigravity 25, Cursor 21, Pi 5, GitHub Copilot 4, Cline 1, Devin 1 | The agent keeps patching, retesting and redoing the same bug, test failure, build error or artifact, often adding new breakage each round, and never reaches a working result; loops where no edits are made are out. |
| Planning and analysis paralysis | 299 | 324 | OpenAI Codex 135, OpenCode 51, Claude Code 50, Google Antigravity 37, Cursor 7, Pi 5, Devin 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Kiro 3, Cline 2, Factory 1, Warp 1 | The agent spends long stretches thinking, planning, validating, running preflight checks or widening the scope, and produces little or no implementation even when told to start; cases where it is actively editing in circles are out. |
| Silent stall while showing as working | 126 | 131 | OpenAI Codex 47, Claude Code 26, Google Antigravity 20, OpenCode 17, Cursor 8, Devin 3, Cline 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1, Zed 1 | The session shows as running for minutes or hours with no visible output or progress, or it says it will start but does nothing until the user nudges it again; visible repeated actions are out. |
| Harness-driven retry and resume loops | 114 | 127 | OpenAI Codex 40, OpenCode 26, Google Antigravity 14, Claude Code 14, Cursor 9, Pi 4, Cline 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Devin 1 | The surrounding tool or harness traps the session in a loop through automatic retries, resume or continue injections, failed compaction, rate-limit or model-unavailable retries, or broken UI states, whatever the model's reasoning; loops caused by the model's own behaviour are out. |
| Re-reading the same files without acting | 110 | 124 | Google Antigravity 52, OpenCode 26, OpenAI Codex 13, Claude Code 6, Pi 5, Cline 3, Factory 2, Cursor 1, Kiro 1, Zed 1 | The agent keeps re-reading, re-scanning or re-analyzing the same files, line ranges or commands (for example ls or git status) and never moves on to editing or answering; loops that do make edits are out. |
| Degenerate repetition in generated text | 80 | 83 | OpenCode 29, OpenAI Codex 20, Claude Code 13, Google Antigravity 11, Cursor 4, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Pi 1 | The model's own output turns into repeated tokens, phrases, echoes or stock replies (for example printing one word hundreds of times or saying "i don't know" over and over) instead of meaningful content; repeated tool actions are out. |
| Endless writer-reviewer ping-pong | 32 | 42 | Claude Code 14, OpenAI Codex 14, Cursor 3, Pi 1 | Two agents or models, one writing and one reviewing, keep sending work back and forth because each review pass finds new issues or redefines done, so the work never closes; a single agent looping alone is out. |
| Other | 296 | 306 | OpenAI Codex 129, Claude Code 55, OpenCode 43, Google Antigravity 29, Cursor 12, Pi 10, Cline 6, Devin 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Factory 2, Grok Build 1, Kiro 1, Zed 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Fix-break cycles that never converge

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-13, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “90% of the commands can stopped to be run if it... writes a program that does what it wants and not tries to inline generate it, fail, try a dozen more times before it gets one that executes...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x4rpn7/auto_mode_released/pgg2jgb/)

#### Planning and analysis paralysis

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-09, r/codex (Reddit): “did you have it review the plan it made before starting implementation? after some hours of implementation, did you ask it why it wasn't making faster progress? i've had to catch codex spinning out of control so many times it's like managing a toddler. claude is way better tbh” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x1w8yp/burned_100_of_weekly_500_plan_on_70k_lines_of/pex91kb/)

#### Re-reading the same files without acting

- Kiro, 2026-10-17, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “i got this. it killed my session. i basically just added a rule to never even attempt to generate or creat images (via ss) or read its own. idk what led it down a loop of it spamming screenshots and trying to read them, which led to this error. haven’t faced a problem since” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1x5nlfw/is_image_input_broken_for_opus_55_right_now/ph8p5so/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 105 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Fix agent getting stuck in repetitive loops

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-17, @antigravity (X): “@shengzheyao @_mohansolo @sundarpichai @antigravity guys please fix this, it just gets stuck like this and then cant proceed. i have to create a new chat session in order to make progress. - Claude Code, 2026-10-08, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i 100% agree with this. i've had it building stuff for the last 2 days and it goes into a loop with so many mistakes and then nothing ever gets done it just burns tokens” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x08zto/usage_limit_change/pekz8kr/)

### 2. Stop re-reading files already read

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-03, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “for me, its constantly analyzing files for hours and hours until no one stops it” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wwrfqb/fetish_38_users_what_is_your_biggest_gripe_about/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-24, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “same here. i feel like 3.7 almost never gets stuck in a loop when reading files. it might loop sometimes, but it never spends 20–30 minutes like 3.8 does, repeatedly reading files, only to end up changing 3 lines of code.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wolcdf/is_it_just_me_or_is_gemini_37_flash_better_than_38/pbrcq4y/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-22, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “yeah, it just reads and reads... sometimes when i tell it to stop it actually does but i'm lucky to have that happen” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wni05g/we_need_a_usage_reset_now/pbf7wzo/)

### 3. Automatic loop detection with hard budget kill switch

- Cursor, 2026-10-01, @cursor_ai (X): “@opendesciorg @mrrrozi @cursor_ai that’s the key boundary: enforce a budget outside the agent, then attribute spend to the run and each retry so a stuck loop can’t spend its way into success.” [source](https://twitter.com/2093457894922473472/status/2105661631946744065)
- Kiro, 2026-09-30, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev it's brave to dare to do a loop. i'm curious about how to implement a circuit breaker for infinite loops and quota runaway?” [source](https://twitter.com/1212651734209724416/status/2105413138879586371)
- Pi, 2026-09-29, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “don't tell me this is a model thing. that would be equivalent to saying it is random. if there are no safeguards against runaway tool calls in pi, just say it (if you know). in that case, the solution is to build such safeguards.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wt95k8/pi_has_a_tendency_to_get_stuck_in_subagent/pcsprg0/)

### 4. Stop retrying after repeated identical failures

- Claude Code, 2026-10-01, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “it keeps getting stuck in a loop of being unable to set a timeout on a powershell script for me. this is across any opus agent.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wvayi3/to_those_claiming_this_new_claude_code_is_better/pdaa1kj/)
- Cursor, 2026-09-30, @cursor_ai (X): “@mulak @cursor_ai put the environment fingerprint in the loop state and stop after a bounded number of identical failures. that turns “agent is stuck” into a diagnosable mismatch—does cursor expose the failed command plus dependency snapshot to the reviewer?” [source](https://twitter.com/1451261536438128646/status/2105221430103441446)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-24, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “use hooks so that doesn't loop when it's having more than 3 errors for the same cmd” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1wo0v3m/eating_loop_of_my_token_in_by_38/pbqai0e/)

### 5. Refunds for usage burned by stuck loops

- Cursor, 2026-09-07, @cursor_ai (X): “@mattiaswikman @cursor_ai @ryolu_ an agent that can't tell it's stuck will happily bill you for the whole afternoon, that's the actual bug. rerun runs mine now so the meter isn't really mine to watch, but yeah, i'd still be asking for the fifty back. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1708040539407269888/status/2096962642636374327)
- Cursor, 2026-09-06, @cursor_ai (X): “hey @cursor_ai - cursor burnt through my ultra plan and $50 om demand when it got stuck on a simple problem (adjusting css work) and just kept going for hours. so seems a bug and would like my tokens and money back. who can i contact @ryolu_?” [source](https://twitter.com/17688497/status/2096481430985740702)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### OpenCode

- Praise, 2026-08-31, r/opencodeCLI (Reddit): “nope big pickle rules. it is extremely rare that i even have to make it try a second time” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1vw7pq1/since_this_sub_hates_literally_every_model_right/p6waiaq/)
- Praise, 2026-09-29, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “can we for a second just pretend we know it's not the model that is the problem and just consider the possibility that it could be something else? or are you telling me that pi only works with certain models but randomly gets stuck with others, which i find unlikely considering that opencode doesn't have this problem with the same models through the same apis.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wt95k8/pi_has_a_tendency_to_get_stuck_in_subagent/pcsulym/)
- Praise, 2026-09-07, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “lol is this still a thing? i got these several times back in the days when antigravity just launched and few months after that google got some of the worst harnesses that can't deal with death loops, and i guess their models also way more prone to them than others. outside of google stuff i got deathloop like once in opencode with some chinese model and never again” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wa0mw4/what_is_this_antigravity_shame_shame/p8ev80e/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-14, r/cursor (Reddit): “are you using claude code? i don't have those issues. but i did notice that when i used opencode and used models like glm or deepseek, the ai models would get stuck in loops. that harness matters a lot.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x5wavo/claude_20_vs_cursor_20/pgqyern/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-13, r/opencode (Reddit): “a few days ago it spam "let me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me runlet me run" on my oc . hmmm” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x4prje/deepseek_v41_flash_goes_full_hmm/pggdtut/)

### Pi

- Complaint, 2026-09-18, @pidotdev (X): “@marcusmccurdy @pidotdev i find that astra high gets sidetracked so easily in pi, maybe owing to how little guidance there is in the system prompt i've had many cases where it goes on for a few hours and implements complete nonsense without solving the original task” [source](https://twitter.com/1525323828532228096/status/2100790551020990635)
- Complaint, 2026-09-12, @pidotdev (X): “i find that @pidotdev consistently just hangs for long running processes using deepseek -- just churns on "working"....” [source](https://twitter.com/26405002/status/2098588346780119484)
- Complaint, 2026-09-11, @pidotdev (X): “@jeudyx @pidotdev yo no he logrado usarlo más allá de tareas muy específicas, pero ya con varas más agénticas se me encicla bastante rápido.” [source](https://twitter.com/801660257093189632/status/2098555758094782805)

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-09-17, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “the harness is your problem, not qwen. claude code has loop prevention and context management baked in, and most local setups don't, so the model just runs off the rails.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1wgr0tb/harness_am_i_doing_something_wrong_or_are_my/pab2zjj/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “100% happens... goes into useless loops and produces deeply nested garbage” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x65yjp/do_you_ever_use_councils/pgueujy/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “eh. it says it saves tokens but then i see claude running the same commands repeatedly because it’s output is getting truncated. still worth a shot tho” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6h7n1/newbie_here_any_tips_to_reduce_token_usage/pgv9b62/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-05, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “math research, seriously, it’s getting rough because claude just tries the same thing, basically maxed out its “brain” at this point” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wyk4f0/fable_55_release/pe3nimg/)

### Google Antigravity

- Praise, 2026-10-07, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i always use 3.8 high; it never gets stuck thinking for too long, nor does it consume huge amounts of tokens. just use it for coding, not for "vibecoding."” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wzx0mb/if_37_works_better_for_you_than_38_contact_the/peht2il/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-17, @antigravity (X): “@shengzheyao @_mohansolo @sundarpichai @antigravity guys please fix this, it just gets stuck like this and then cant proceed. i have to create a new chat session in order to make progress. - Complaint, 2026-10-13, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “90% of the commands can stopped to be run if it... writes a program that does what it wants and not tries to inline generate it, fail, try a dozen more times before it gets one that executes...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x4rpn7/auto_mode_released/pgg2jgb/)

### Cursor

- Complaint, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@nedley @cursor_ai mostly niche library edge cases and subtle async race conditions. it just starts looping in circles.” [source](https://twitter.com/1380769041984278530/status/2110943005045833728)

- Complaint, 2026-10-02, @cursor_ai (X): “@mulak @cursor_ai auto-fixing tests across files is great until an env version mismatch traps the agent in a loop” [source](https://twitter.com/1395133841531101192/status/2105849287712370897)

### GitHub Copilot

- Praise, 2026-10-07, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “have you noticed an improvement in the behavior of gpt-6 luna (in github copilot) when used as an agent? i used the free version to complete a non-trivial feature and to update an architecture document. in both cases, it stayed focused on the goal right to the end—delivering high quality without stalling or getting stuck in endless loops. and this was the free tier. we are truly seeing a whole new level of quality with these recent models.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x02f8v/gpt6_luna_copilot_improves/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-04, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i've tried that this week on a card while working. most of the time, worked, but sometimes luna started a loop and never finish the planning. i've stopped and retry and worked fine” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxbqa7/most_cost_effective_with_highest_roi/pdtnv1y/)

### Factory

- Complaint, 2026-09-24, @droid (X): “@droid droid still stuck in flutter development, whenever it’s try to run any dart mcp tools, it’s stuck in never ending loop, and unlike amp and pi or opencode it can’t even auto run adb command for debugging something in that.” [source](https://twitter.com/2995471962/status/2102910997338218965)

### Kiro

- Complaint, 2026-10-17, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “i got this. it killed my session. i basically just added a rule to never even attempt to generate or creat images (via ss) or read its own. idk what led it down a loop of it spamming screenshots and trying to read them, which led to this error. haven’t faced a problem since” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1x5nlfw/is_image_input_broken_for_opus_55_right_now/ph8p5so/)
