# Breaks existing code or reintroduces bugs (`work.regressions_introduced`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.regressions_introduced

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** Edits break previously working code, reintroduce fixed bugs, or cycle between introducing and fixing bugs.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Spins, loops or gets stuck without progress](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.stuck_loops.md) for repetition without code damage. Not this: see [Games checks instead of fixing the problem](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.reward_hacking.md) for deliberately gaming checks.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 767. Complaint share: 93%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

No coding agent clearly does better than the rest at leaving working code alone. Claude Code places 1st of 5, but no agent's score differs reliably from the category norm, and users of all of them describe the same kinds of breakage. Few users rate this criterion, but those who do almost always complain: 93.4% of rated user-weeks are complaints. OpenAI Codex places last. Its users raise broken code 2.44 times as often as other users, and they write 44% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

No agent ranks high and none ranks low. Users of the first-placed and last-placed agents describe the same problems. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex users both say that edits break features the agent was not asked to touch, and that each fix creates a new bug. The main difference is volume. Codex users file the largest share of nearly every kind of complaint, including 57% of reports that the agent deleted or rewrote large parts of a working codebase.

- **Ranks high**: no agent
- **Ranks low**: no agent

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest mode is collateral breakage, at 22% of complaining user-weeks: an edit for one task breaks pages or logic elsewhere. Fix-one-break-another cycles, where each repair adds a new bug, come next at 21%. OpenAI Codex users lead every mode except corrupted file contents, which Google Antigravity users report most. Codex users account for most of the destructive deletion mode, at 57%, and of unneeded fixes that damage working code, at 54%.

716 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collateral breakage outside the requested change | 156 | 161 | OpenAI Codex 70, Claude Code 43, Google Antigravity 17, Cursor 16, OpenCode 8, Amp 1, Kiro 1 | The agent's edits for one task break features, pages, styles or logic that the user did not ask it to touch, such as a settings-page restyle that leaks into the pricing page or a validation check silently dropped in an unrelated function; cases where the requested feature itself is done wrong are out. |
| Fix-one-break-another repair cycles | 152 | 159 | OpenAI Codex 69, Claude Code 39, Google Antigravity 14, Cursor 14, OpenCode 11, GitHub Copilot 2, Devin 2, Pi 1 | Each attempt to fix a bug or review finding creates new bugs, so the user is stuck in a 'one step forward, two steps back' loop of patches on patches that may never settle; a single regression that is fixed cleanly is out. |
| Destructive wholesale deletion or rewriting | 76 | 77 | OpenAI Codex 43, Claude Code 14, Google Antigravity 8, OpenCode 5, Cursor 4, Kiro 1, Pi 1 | The agent deletes files, sections or its own earlier output, or rewrites large parts of a working codebase far beyond what was asked, leaving the repo 'wrecked' and needing a revert or rebuild from scratch; small, contained mistakes are out. |
| Reintroducing previously fixed bugs | 62 | 65 | OpenAI Codex 28, Claude Code 19, Google Antigravity 8, Cursor 3, OpenCode 3, Devin 1 | The agent brings back bugs, old code or old behaviour that had already been fixed, for example by rolling back to earlier versions or overwriting earlier fixes, including bugs that reappear in later sessions; new bugs that were never fixed before are out. |
| Edits leave project unbuildable or crashing | 51 | 55 | OpenAI Codex 18, Claude Code 13, OpenCode 8, Google Antigravity 5, Kiro 3, Cursor 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Factory 1 | After the agent's changes the code no longer compiles, builds, type-checks, deploys or starts (for example a deleted main(), a dropped file extension or a pile of tsc errors), often while the agent reports the work as done; code that runs but behaves wrongly is out. |
| Gradual decay into unmaintainable spaghetti | 50 | 50 | OpenAI Codex 21, Claude Code 18, Google Antigravity 4, Cursor 4, OpenCode 2, Pi 1 | Over many iterations the agent piles up layered patches, duplicate components and over-engineering until the codebase becomes fragile and regression-prone, and needs dedicated cleanup or another tool to untangle; a single discrete breakage is out. |
| Unneeded fixes damaging working code | 28 | 28 | OpenAI Codex 15, Claude Code 9, Google Antigravity 2, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1 | The agent 'fixes' problems that don't exist or makes unrequested 'improvements', such as phantom bugs patched across 100+ files or textures blended 'to fit the scene', and this degrades code or assets that worked; legitimate bug fixes that go wrong are out. |
| Corrupting file contents or encoding | 20 | 20 | Google Antigravity 6, Claude Code 5, OpenAI Codex 4, GitHub Copilot 1, Cursor 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1, Zed 1 | The agent's file operations damage text itself, through mangled characters, broken encoding such as an em-dash corrupting a script, or lines and blocks deleted by tooling or autocomplete; logic errors in otherwise intact text are out. |
| Other | 148 | 156 | OpenAI Codex 65, Claude Code 46, Google Antigravity 14, Cursor 8, OpenCode 7, Cline 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Kiro 1, Zed 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Corrupting file contents or encoding

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i've been noticing something about opus 5.5 today. it is regularly corrupting files and having to restore lines that it deleted. sometimes it will think it edited a file, but "the file on disk is unmodified, my changes didn't stick" very strange and a bit unnerving” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6yx5z/tried_opus_55_after_months_on_fable/pgzqd4s/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 27 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Preserve working code during edits and refactors

- OpenCode, 2026-10-04, @opencode (X): “@datachaz @opencode i’d love to see the next step: ask both to change the layout without breaking what already works. that’s where speed would really matter to me.” [source](https://twitter.com/1857803404212346880/status/2106840175133233248)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-21, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “when the extension proposes changes in the code, it breaks the linting and my live-debug session because both old and new codes are in the codebase. i had to switch back to the ide.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1vyskmd/recently_they_announced_the_antigravity_ide/pb8kdny/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-01, r/codex (Reddit): “i also caught 6.1 sol on xhigh doing edits and changing nothing. astra on high used to use go fmt to format the code but since i switched to 6.1 sol. i see massive edits ~600 lines of edit. checking the diff it just doing manual formatting. no changes other than that. also found deleting files and then recreating the same file with 8 lines of edits.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wuuc4e/gpt_61_sol_caught_faking_tests/pd83l0q/)

### 2. Stop reintroducing previously fixed bugs

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs very cool but can you fix some simple bugs that you keep making worse? [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1907907407625572352/status/2110577076558500340)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-15, r/codex (Reddit): “moved off claude partly because weekend work and the 5-hour window suck. sol high to plan, terra high to execute. docs supposedly migrated, but "change a and b" only does a, then fixing b reverts a. last time terra flipped a back while you were fixing b, how long did that ping-pong run, and what did you end up shipping vs leaving broken?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wgyi2b/i_just_migrated_from_claude_what_am_i_doing_wrong/p9yboov/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-03, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “the extension in vscode is unusable. file state is messy, impossible to know if the changes made by the agent have been applied or if you have to accept the changes first. i can see bugs being introduced and the agent remaking the same modifications. i wish i could use it but it's simply impossible.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1w637hk/antigravity_20_release_v2120/p7mnu82/)

### 3. Clean up leftover files and duplicates

- Claude Code, 2026-09-29, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “astra turned my 5gb game into a 45gb game by replicating it every time it wanted to do a visual verification in a hidden player and not deleting the clones. probably something like that.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wov62z/got_mogged_by_claude_opus/pcqrqvh/)

### 4. Stop reverting or discarding user changes

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-09, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “do not remove a change just because it wasn't made by you. the agent almost always discards my manual code changes because it thinks they were excidently made by it lmao” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wbcu5v/what_is_the_most_repeated_instruction_that_you/p8pcx7f/)

### 5. Test gates before pushing changes

- Devin, 2026-10-07, @cognition (X): “@laz01l @devinai @cognition i would check how the mac and windows runner sessions behave when ci fails for a reason that only shows on one os. a fix pushed from the cloud session can pass on the vm that failed and still break the other one, so having it re-run both before the push saves a loop.” [source](https://twitter.com/1447584564239486980/status/2107791844360982966)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

- Complaint, 2026-09-30, @opencode (X): “@siddspeed @opencode yes. it has created a mess for me. replaced well working modern js code with old-style over-complicated mess.” [source](https://twitter.com/1438070062322274308/status/2105334127943929918)
- Complaint, 2026-09-24, r/opencodeCLI (Reddit): “1.3 was a cesspool for coding, had capability, but unable to end it proper, it always introduced issues due to what looked "attention issues", either model issues or the contributor is limited in some kind of manner” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1wopbtv/what_muse_spark_14_contributor_is_already_here/pbs0lmg/)

### OpenAI Codex

- Praise, 2026-10-04, r/ClaudeAI (Reddit): “tbh with i don’t have this issue with codex. i tried claude again after a long time and it went and changed so many things. maybe i’d have to figure out how to make it work with claude” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wx8vcm/how_do_you_stop_claude_code_from_undoing_things/pds0vfd/)
- Praise, 2026-09-23, r/codex (Reddit): “i just find it less bug ridden when using codex, and astra tends to daydream less. may be my bias, i originally worked on work spaces, maybe its just more experience. i use work space only for documents and drafts for non code applications” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wnnv36/plus_users_hows_your_experience_so_far/pbi47sn/)
- Praise, 2026-09-12, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i have to use verify and simplify in every pr and even double agent reviews. the number of bugs produced by claude opus is substantially higher than codex and it's not even close and this is just happening recently with opus 5. the situation was completely opposite until 4.6 and maybe even 4.8 was ok to an extent.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wdw386/i_have_never_had_to_use_verify_so_much_in_cc_its/p9asg4d/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-15, r/codex (Reddit): “every time i ask codex to make a change, it breaks something else. i'm spending hours just to take 1 step and sam altman sends me back 3.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3w8o0/codex_vs_claude/pgtb0h3/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “luna is trash, most of the times is introducing problems that need to be fixed by sol or astra. its only works for repetitive tasks like setups” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3aspw/luna_appreciation_man/pf9euh6/)

### GitHub Copilot

- Complaint, 2026-10-15, @GitHubCopilot (X): “copilot is still sick. ask it to add one method, and it mangles the class into code that won't compile. multiple attempts later, it finally gets it right—after wasting my tokens fixing its mistakes. a simple task becomes a ridiculous ordeal. beyond frustrating! @githubcopilot [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1658046319/status/2110812614536438141)
- Complaint, 2026-09-28, @GitHubCopilot (X): “what happened to github copilot in visual studio this week? it ignores my instructions, writes broken code, and burns through my tokens while i ask it to fix the mess it just made. apparently, it’s only optimizing my bill. 😡 @visualstudio @githubcopilot [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1658046319/status/2104609580957220874)

- Complaint, 2026-09-03, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “i’ve used it, extensively…. it’s not that great. opus 5 costs way less and performs very similarly. fable has done weird things i asked, and in one occasion straight broke the test app i always run these things through before adopting it. it’s not impressive” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1w5wmz0/after_waiting_almost_4_months_for_fable_5_and_the/p7j1m3i/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-02, @kirodotdev (X): “trying to use @kirodotdev and i told the ai to fix a chat container. the ai successfully fucked up my 4 hours work.. completely reset the whole work with the stashing and restoring the last commit. i know it's a trial account, and using autopilot.. but seriously ??
