# Stops mid-task or answers instead of acting (`work.premature_stop`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.premature_stop

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** The agent halts before finishing, or replies with explanation or a summary instead of performing the action.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Claims work is done or fixed when it is not](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/verify.false_completion.md) for stopping while claiming the work is done. Not this: see [Short rolling usage window blocks or interrupts work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.window_interrupts_work.md) for stops caused by quota.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 553. Complaint share: 92%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code is the best of the ranked agents at carrying a task through to the end. It is the only one whose users rate it better than the category norm, though its users still complain about early stops more often than they praise it. Users rarely rate this, but when they do, 92.0% of them complain. OpenAI Codex is 3rd of 3. Its users rate early stops 4.4 times as often as other users, and they write 61% of the category's complaints here. OpenCode sits between the two, below the norm.

### What separates the best from the rest

No agent ranks high or low on this criterion. Every ranked agent draws mostly complaints, but in different numbers: Claude Code users give 22 praise to 96 complaints, and OpenAI Codex users give 19 to 310. Codex users describe an agent that does part of the list and stops, says what it will do next and then ends its turn, or returns a plan instead of a fix. OpenCode users more often describe sessions that end without warning and an agent that keeps pausing to report progress.

- **Ranks high**: no agent
- **Ranks low**: no agent

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest mode is partial work presented as a finished turn, at 24% of complaining user-weeks. OpenAI Codex users account for 65% of it. Codex leads every mode. Two belong mostly to it: returning a diagnosis or plan instead of the fix (79%), and announcing the next step and then stopping (74%). Sessions that end without warning are the most shared mode, with OpenCode users at 26%.

509 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Partial completion presented as a finished turn | 124 | 129 | OpenAI Codex 81, Claude Code 24, Google Antigravity 8, OpenCode 3, Amp 2, Cline 2, Cursor 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1 | The agent finishes only a subset of the requested items, files or goals and then stops, either claiming it is done or admitting that most of the work remains, without being blocked; this excludes runs cut off by quota or context limits. |
| Gives up on minor obstacles or invented blockers | 76 | 82 | OpenAI Codex 46, Claude Code 17, OpenCode 9, Cursor 2, Google Antigravity 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | The agent drops the task or cancels a goal when it meets a fixable error, a busy resource or a blocker it made up, instead of retrying or working around it; this excludes stops where the blocker really needs the user to act. |
| Unnecessary approval requests or handing work back | 60 | 61 | OpenAI Codex 38, Claude Code 17, Google Antigravity 2, Amp 1, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1 | The agent stops to ask permission ('ready to proceed?'), asks for information it already has, or tells the user to do the work themselves, even though the task and its permissions allowed it to continue; this excludes stopping before genuinely destructive or irreversible actions. |
| Abrupt silent termination mid-task | 58 | 60 | OpenAI Codex 23, OpenCode 15, Claude Code 10, Google Antigravity 4, Cursor 2, Amp 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | The session or turn ends without warning partway through the work (cancelled runs, garbled final output, crashes, the agent going silent) with no explanation or handoff; this excludes stops where the agent clearly chose to end its turn and said why. |
| Frequent progress check-ins on long tasks | 54 | 55 | OpenAI Codex 34, OpenCode 10, Claude Code 5, Devin 2, Amp 1, Cursor 1, Pi 1 | During a long autonomous task the agent keeps pausing every few minutes to report progress or say work remains, and only resumes after 'continue', even when told not to stop; this excludes one-off stops caused by errors, crashes or usage limits. |
| Announces next action, then ends turn | 50 | 53 | OpenAI Codex 37, Claude Code 5, OpenCode 4, Pi 3, Amp 1 | The agent says it will do something ('I'll run the tests now', 'starting now', 'fixing the test:') and then ends its turn without calling any tool, so the user has to prompt it again; this excludes turns that end on a question to the user or on a report of what was done. |
| Usage or context limit cuts off unfinished work | 34 | 35 | OpenAI Codex 23, Claude Code 6, Cursor 2, Devin 2, Google Antigravity 1 | The agent uses up the quota or fills its context partway through a task and halts, sometimes calling it a 'good stopping point', leaving the work unfinished and not easy to resume; this excludes complaints only about high token use where the task was completed. |
| Diagnoses or plans instead of implementing | 28 | 28 | OpenAI Codex 22, Claude Code 2, Google Antigravity 1, Cline 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1 | Asked to fix, build or deploy something, the agent returns only a description of the problem, a proposed solution or a plan and does not apply it; this excludes cases where the user asked only for analysis, and cases where it applies part of the fix. |
| Other | 41 | 43 | OpenAI Codex 20, Claude Code 11, Google Antigravity 4, OpenCode 4, Cursor 2 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Partial completion presented as a finished turn

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i got a lot done ! [link] it wrote a plan for itself... and didnt finish...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x7tx3o/psa_argon_and_gemini_reset/ph7i1dw/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-14, @opencode (X): “@opencode this model is lazy. you give it a 12 task plan and it stops after four tasks and says i'm done, tasks 5-12 still need to be implemented. wtf? i'm thinking its a small flash model from liquid maybe. the model is fast, but it needs a babysitter.” [source](https://twitter.com/2036433033990119427/status/2110177197415961071)
- Cursor, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai it also just stops early, all the time, even with plan mode. today it stopped at stage 6 out of 12 and stated "did not implement 7 - 12" despite having no technical limitations to do so. this plan was just a code review, and it lasted a staggering 10 minutes.” [source](https://twitter.com/1841200327980195848/status/2108729573626253727)

#### Gives up on minor obstacles or invented blockers

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “ive found i keep it focused on one long-running thing at a time instead of one-offs but it likes to give up” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x00ct5/plus_sub/peo0hto/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “nah opus 5.5 is really bad its just giving up on stuff so easily” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wxamd8/they_fucked_opus_55/pdv5fp3/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-04, r/codex (Reddit): “yes, i don't know if it's because i also use opus, but i feel like sol is incredibly lazy.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wwztof/61_being_slow_is_the_best_thing_ever_and_you_are/pdppn00/)

#### Unnecessary approval requests or handing work back

- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “honestly i have this with claude but to a luch less extent with codex. because is constantly producing new tickets, new edge cases, just another backup and restart, ... constantly asking for my intervention. i have the impression that codex just finishes.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8ckey/burnout_risk_for_developers_is_it_just_me/phbltx3/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@mikeysee i think the intention was to recommend follow-ups, but all i’ve seen it do is make me click a button to get it to keep moving down the checklist of stuff we already agreed it should do. extremely bad feature @claudedevs” [source](https://twitter.com/1832174211311271936/status/2111330905562534145)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “my same experience. if you approve to it, it still wants you to do the task yourself.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3mtiw/dot_is_already_rug_pulled/pfciis4/)

#### Abrupt silent termination mid-task

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “hey @claudedevs @lydiahallie have been test driving projects for a few days. pretty cool! one bit of feedback, the main thread could be a bit more proactive about when tasks finish. more then once it just kinda sat on finished tasks until i poked it.” [source](https://twitter.com/1077745046/status/2110732346433614183)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-11, r/opencode (Reddit): “it just stops as if the task has finished but without the usual report. if i ask "hello?" it recognizes it has stopped, ask me if it wants to continue to switch to implement mode and a 2 or 3 minutes latter it stops again.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x32jwa/issues_with_claude_haiku_55_opencode_go/pf7hqvs/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-07, @opencode (X): “why the @opencode is stopping in the middle of the work? any ideas how to prevent it ? i do not have this problem with claude code [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1341301834527498241/status/2107956772371914892)

#### Frequent progress check-ins on long tasks

- Claude Code, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “yes, i've noticed this behavior even without hitting any limits. there are some times opus/fable seem very keen on stopping the work just like a human would when they're exhausted. it's very strange.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x91pei/anyone_else_notice_claude_code_or_codex_rushing/phhtucn/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-16, r/codex (Reddit): “sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. it just keeps abruptly stoping after 3-5 minutes. i am tasking an ai agent because i want it to automate stuff but having to sit through it like this makes me feel like doing it myself” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x7mq7m/will_not_proceed_with_code_fixes_thinks_its/ph6rl2h/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-15, @opencode (X): “@opencode cat jam free is like stopping on after one answer, you have push it to work, space bunny free is just working like /upload mode ......i dont think cat jam was not like that in the beginning, have i done something stupid ?” [source](https://twitter.com/2033478554512666624/status/2110595482917478857)

#### Announces next action, then ends turn

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-16, r/codex (Reddit): “"you're right, i ended turn instead of continuing. i stopped prematurely—not because we were blocked." is this driving anybody else nuts?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x45q9b/codex_usage_and_operation_discussion_last_updated/ph61x8e/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-14, r/codex (Reddit): “i don’t know how to continuous work with sol or astra, they love to stop and tell me what the next step is and just not do it. drives me insane” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x4yte1/gpt61_sol_is_46x_slower_than_gpt56_sol_are_we/pgm489e/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “"hey next up we should implement feature xy. please give a plan." "sure here is your plan" "sounds great" "alright then the next step would be to implement the plan." "yea do it" "alright, i will now implement the plan" this started with 6.1 sol. it's so frustrating” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x4vy2i/codex_literally_unusable/pghn0eu/)

#### Usage or context limit cuts off unfinished work

- Claude Code, 2026-09-28, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i get irritated when it say "this seems like a good stopping point" after-which i realize, this usually only happens when my session context is nearing the full mark.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wrwpf8/being_a_human_is_weird_sometimes/pckfuu7/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-22, r/codex (Reddit): “if your task goes on long enough, it eventually just stops.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wnda22/the_engines_have_been_forcefully_stopped/pbe1wvk/)
- Devin, 2026-09-21, @cognition (X): “@da7_tech ok, i bit and signed up to @cognition @devindesktop with a pro subscription. i asked it to do a scan on one repo. it ran for about 20-25 minutes. it didn't finish [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2071953914182725633/status/2102138818736300445)

#### Diagnoses or plans instead of implementing

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “it’s still lazy gpt6 familie not using their workspace but just answering in 2-3 sentences. don’t need more of this” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x4p9tx/tobo_said_extra_usage/pgiq8q9/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-07, r/codex (Reddit): “i switched back to 5.6 sol. if the request is "diagnose and fix," stopping at the diagnosis leaves half the task undone. having to ask again just adds another slow round trip.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wz00n8/gpt_61_sol_is_so_incredibly_lazy_compared_to_astra/peegw91/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, r/codex (Reddit): “anyone noticed it? when you ask it to diagnose and fix the problem, it comes back and describe to you the problem without even a handoff or the next step in place. it's terrible. this is unacceptable. describe your experience below to further support this case.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wz00n8/gpt_61_sol_is_so_incredibly_lazy_compared_to_astra/)

#### Other

- OpenCode, 2026-10-18, @opencode (X): “free glm5.3 at @opencode desktop app keeps autocompacting and never do the actual work, fine on opencode terminal tho. anyone had the same issue?” [source](https://twitter.com/2053432957629833216/status/2111659235201404962)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “thanks tibo, openai's bullshit got me to try claude and now i am converted. opus 5.5 is so good, it is not lazy like sol and astra, and does not need constant feedback or perfect prompts to get things right, it just works, such a joy to work with. i will still keep openai subscription, but as my project's workhorse under claude's command.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x5c5wm/tibo_day_8/pgl57dl/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 77 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Finish tasks without stopping early

- Cursor, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai if grok 4.8 can be trained to prevent stopping early, then it would be a great model series for a reasonable price. it just needs to be trained to go hours at a time rather than being hand-held through 10-minute sprints.” [source](https://twitter.com/1841200327980195848/status/2108731963615977796)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i actually have my linux server set to always on even if it loses power and launches my vscode. process still requires me to chat claude from mobile and tell it to go again” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x1esxn/attention_heavy_ai_users/peuavxh/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-07, @opencode (X): “why the @opencode is stopping in the middle of the work? any ideas how to prevent it ? i do not have this problem with claude code [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1341301834527498241/status/2107956772371914892)

### 2. Graceful stop with handoff summary and checkpoint

- Claude Code, 2026-10-02, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs the time limit is up, will there be a wrap-up? don't cut it off halfway. this change is quite user-friendly.” [source](https://twitter.com/2066846388848308224/status/2105988254910591248)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-26, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs the wrap-up i'd want is a small handoff: files changed, tests actually run, anything still broken, and the next unfinished step. finishing an edit is useful; knowing what's safe to resume is what makes the pause workable.” [source](https://twitter.com/2180560289/status/2103887228099535203)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-26, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs the important part is leaving the repo in a state the next session can trust. a short wrap-up that finishes the edit and says what remains is more useful than a hard stop with a half-written diff.” [source](https://twitter.com/1366427283397824513/status/2103881860304810129)

### 3. Auto-continue without resume prompts

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-30, r/codex (Reddit): “avearage 26 token/ sec for me. fable was around 30. so it's not that bad since it doesn't stop every 5 seconds to ask for 'continue' (looking at you gpt 5.5) so you can just let it run” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wu2mnp/gpt_61_is_great_value_but_very_slow_after_10/pczuw60/)
- OpenCode, 2026-09-30, @opencode (X): “opencode v2 is still not very good, it seems that the exit condition of the agent loop is too easily triggered, it often just stops working by itself, and i need to send a message to continue for it to keep going @opencode” [source](https://twitter.com/14202679/status/2105172662087819405)
- Amp, 2026-09-28, @AmpCode (X): “@sqs @thesammykins @ampcode i also notice low mode doesn't soldier on, it starts stopping after a while and i need to continuously nudge it to carry on.” [source](https://twitter.com/437728663/status/2104451506590429607)

### 4. Perform the action instead of describing it

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-20, r/codex (Reddit): “lol i just told astra that it is acting lazy, especially with the voice mode. it just doesn't go in-depth and will stop and claim it is done.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w8t3tu/astra_is_lazy/pb0tp6h/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-14, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs be good to implement it not write docs. genuinely killing me today” [source](https://twitter.com/1754028639052517376/status/2099491116194410711)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-13, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “any chance in the next update to @openai codex and/or astra can include a fix for astra just apologizing for not doing something when i mention a mistake and not doing work and then killing the thread? @ajambrosino @thsottiaux @sama” [source](https://twitter.com/1632699243231051777/status/2099098730062389480)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-09-29, r/ClaudeAI (Reddit): “continuing automatically in claude code (cli) it was there already in desktop app, but i’m glad it’s finally there in cli too. definitely helpful. :)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wtlijv/continuing_automatically_in_claude_code_cli/)
- Praise, 2026-09-28, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “on claude, probably not really. claude is quite willing to work until the end without punting back, and just asking it to plan in automode gives very similiar outcomes. on codex i strongly recommend plan mode and spec driven development.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1ws7gvb/is_plan_mode_still_worth_it/pcj27f5/)
- Praise, 2026-09-27, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs this is a real quality-of-life win. getting cut off mid-edit was one of the most frustrating parts of long claude code sessions.” [source](https://twitter.com/1149586194/status/2104035326746620053)
- Complaint, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “yes, i've noticed this behavior even without hitting any limits. there are some times opus/fable seem very keen on stopping the work just like a human would when they're exhausted. it's very strange.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x91pei/anyone_else_notice_claude_code_or_codex_rushing/phhtucn/)
