# Git commits, branches and sync (`work.git_workflow`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.git_workflow

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** How the agent handles commits, attribution, branches, pulls and pushes, and merge conflicts between concurrent agents or teammates.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Risky or irreversible actions without confirmation](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.destructive_actions.md) for data-destroying git commands.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 376. Complaint share: 66%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

No agent clearly handles git best. Claude Code leads the three ranked agents, but its customer love stays within the category norm, and its users write both the most praise and the most complaints. Users rarely rate git: it is the 59th most rated of 63 criteria. When they do, 66.5% of rated user-weeks complain. Cursor, last of the three ranked agents, is the only one rated worse than the category norm. Claude Code users write 42% of the category's git complaints.

### What separates the best from the rest

No agent ranks high or low here, and users of the three ranked agents describe different problems. Claude Code users most often say the agent puts AI credit on their commits. They also say it commits more files, or commits more often, than they asked for. Cursor users describe new branches or PRs they did not want, and a built-in git interface that is missing or broken. OpenAI Codex users report confusing worktrees and git commands that the sandbox blocks.

- **Ranks high**: no agent
- **Ranks low**: no agent

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is unwanted AI attribution. The agent adds co-author lines, branding or credit to commits, sometimes against the user's settings. It accounts for 24% of complaining user-weeks, and 69% of those come from Claude Code users. Claude Code users also write most of the complaints about parallel agents producing conflicting merges, and about commits that ignore what the user asked to commit. Complaints about broken manual git controls are spread across Zed, Cursor and OpenAI Codex.

253 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unwanted AI attribution added to commits | 61 | 63 | Claude Code 42, Cursor 10, GitHub Copilot 3, OpenCode 2, Amp 1, OpenAI Codex 1, Devin 1, Pi 1 | The agent stamps co-authored-by trailers, branding, ads, session URLs or AI contributor credit onto commits or PRs the user did not want credited, including when settings or instructions say not to; it does not cover overwriting the user's git identity for other reasons. |
| Manual git controls missing or broken | 36 | 36 | Zed 9, Cursor 8, OpenAI Codex 6, Google Antigravity 5, Amp 3, Claude Code 2, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1, Warp 1 | The tool's built-in git interface (commit and push buttons, source control panel, commit message generation, pre-commit hooks, base-branch diff selection, merge-conflict UI, LFS, non-GitHub hosts) is missing, removed or broken, so the user has to go through the agent or a terminal. |
| Commit scope and frequency ignore user intent | 34 | 34 | Claude Code 19, OpenAI Codex 7, Cursor 4, Google Antigravity 2, Amp 1, Pi 1 | The agent commits every file when told to commit only some, commits and pushes too eagerly or refuses to push when asked, writes bloated messages, runs git status and log over and over, or uses slow, token-draining git strategies such as interactive mode; it does not cover attribution text. |
| Worktrees confusing, stale or uncontrollable | 32 | 32 | Claude Code 11, OpenAI Codex 9, Cursor 3, OpenCode 3, Zed 3, Amp 2, Conductor 1 | Agent worktrees fall far behind main, get created without warning or in uncontrolled numbers, take up lots of disk, or cannot be listed, rebased or given a chosen base branch; merge conflicts between them belong to the parallel-agent conflict mode instead. |
| Parallel agents produce conflicting or broken merges | 23 | 23 | Claude Code 14, Cursor 3, OpenCode 2, Amp 1, OpenAI Codex 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Pi 1 | Several agents or teammates' agents changing the same repo at once cause merge conflicts, combined builds that break even though each branch passed, or PRs left conflicted with no one resolving them, and the agent does not coordinate or reconcile the work. |
| Unwanted branches, PRs or remotes created | 20 | 22 | Cursor 8, Claude Code 7, OpenAI Codex 4, GitHub Copilot 1 | The agent opens a new branch or PR on every prompt or change, commits to branches that were already merged, refuses trunk-based flow, or pushes work to a remote the user did not pick, when the user wanted to keep working on the existing branch, PR or repo. |
| Git operations blocked by sandbox or credentials | 17 | 18 | OpenAI Codex 8, Google Antigravity 4, Claude Code 3, Cline 1, Cursor 1 | The agent cannot fetch, push or authenticate with the remote because of sandbox security contexts, blocked network, missing credentials, or index.lock and index corruption errors that work fine outside the agent; it does not cover cases where the agent could push but picked the wrong target. |
| Reported push leaves local and remote diverged | 12 | 12 | Amp 4, Claude Code 4, OpenAI Codex 4 | After the agent says it pushed or synced, the local repo, the agent's copy and the remote are on different commits, or the agent depends on stale memory of what was committed and pushed, so the user has to check by hand. |
| Other | 22 | 22 | Claude Code 9, Cursor 4, OpenAI Codex 3, Google Antigravity 2, Zed 2, Amp 1, OpenCode 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Unwanted AI attribution added to commits

- Claude Code, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “and they keep moving this "co-authored" to different places and different instructions so you can't just turn it off once 👍” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8vtr8/hey_claude_its_about_time_you_stop/phg62xv/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-09, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “it's not reliable. depending on how you commit , it still writes it. for example using the commit or sync button in the new agents window. i found myself needing to ask in chat to commit on my behalf in order to not have the co-authored by stuff” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x1du0s/git_hook_that_removes_coauthoredby_lines_from/peu7ayi/)

#### Manual git controls missing or broken

- Cursor, 2026-09-28, r/cursor (Reddit): “[link] when i delete local branches, cursor seems to hold on to them with no intuitive way on how to clear them. these are all old branches and it's a bit annoying that they just don't update/go away when they are deleted. am i missing something?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wslmzf/local_branches_are_not_cleared_in_the_desktop/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-26, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity i've not been able to generate commit messages in the ide for over a month now. your engineers are not using the tools they are building?? weird.” [source](https://twitter.com/4724047372/status/2103684264264978643)

#### Commit scope and frequency ignore user intent

- Cursor, 2026-09-30, @cursor_ai (X): “hey @cursor_ai this probably can be improved, cursor bot doesn't push when the message has anything other than the command [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1467403893311217667/status/2105335773562372538)

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-21, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “i would add another rule under git "do not use git status or git log unless really required." for some reason, even before making a small change, it checks a files history like 3-10 times. even for simple requests.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1wl9m6u/my_rules_for_ag/pb4lxgm/)

#### Worktrees confusing, stale or uncontrollable

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “looks like they removed the worktree checkbox and every new session starts in a new separate worktree now. am i missing something? otherwise this is a big crock of shit” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6is2o/claude_code_ui_update/pgvy02v/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs can i have my little worktree checkbox back, sometimes i do want it, sometimes i don't want it agents seems poor at deciding.” [source](https://twitter.com/2725652741/status/2110686435120734342)

#### Parallel agents produce conflicting or broken merges

- Cursor, 2026-09-24, @cursor_ai (X): “it would be nice if @cursor_ai cloud agents always pulled the latest changes from the main/master branch before starting work. they don’t always do it seems, unnecessarily resulting in merge conflicts sometimes” [source](https://twitter.com/135456025/status/2103003867885756516)
- Amp, 2026-09-21, @AmpCode (X): “@casjam @ampcode i'm still having a hard time getting out of 1 orb for bigger projects. reconciling commits seemed too challenging.” [source](https://twitter.com/18791509/status/2102149070324133996)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “sequencing of git merges (using github). claude will allocate one or more numbers for its prs and then store this information in claude.md. it starts to fall apart when there are multiple coding sessions (chats) writing to claude.md. appreciate any words of wisdom!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w6md7s/merge_sequencing_help/p7pkv8u/)

#### Unwanted branches, PRs or remotes created

- Cursor, 2026-10-14, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai most of my work as a solo developer, i want cursor to work on main branch instead of feature branches. i have git history if i want to revert something. could you please add an option to just work on the desired branch?” [source](https://twitter.com/3001246227/status/2110312276263890971)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, r/codex (Reddit): “what's worse, is that it has been shipped with a huge blocker bug for those using codex cloud. as of yesterday it's incapable of following up on a task without requiring a new pr to be made making it unusable unless you want 15 prs for every single followup. [[link]” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wxx7y5/chat_and_work_will_be_merged/pe0zk1f/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-29, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “# new branch on each new session prompt???? []([link]) how to prevent this silly behavior? on vs code” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wtktvu/new_branch_on_each_new_prompt/)

#### Git operations blocked by sandbox or credentials

- Claude Code, 2026-10-14, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs i'm begging you to please allow me to configure an exception to the github proxy's block on graphql requests. i am sick of manually adding to a merge queue.” [source](https://twitter.com/907355023696449536/status/2110356916245606784)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-07, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i've had issues with auto not being able to push code, i've seen others users go through this as well. do you think i should just stick to local commit for these long sessions? that's about the only time i used manual mode.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wzqk1f/claude_opus_55_deleted_a_users_c_drive/peeg2de/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-18, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux when i was delegated to the luna reserve usage, the sandbox does not allow git operations, making it super tough to use. and also would love to see "autofix ci & comments" option in the @chatgpt codex app. that would really be a claude code killer” [source](https://twitter.com/1027581358217080833/status/2100890296964026622)

#### Reported push leaves local and remote diverged

- Amp, 2026-09-28, @AmpCode (X): “@sqs @ampcode @helpspot also being able to update the local copy of a repo from remote deterministically would be nice. right now i end up saying "update this from remote pretty frequently."” [source](https://twitter.com/11571252/status/2104686353661489204)
- Amp, 2026-09-14, @AmpCode (X): “@sqs @ampcode thanks! yea i’d appreciate a little post mort so i know this kind of thing won’t happen again, at least not permanent data loss. hard to rely on for true “direct to main” workflow otherwise 😅” [source](https://twitter.com/109443773/status/2099342708410392884)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-02, @ClaudeDevs (X): “claude in the desktop app needs to do better at keeping track of commits. it relies too heavily on old knowledge of what has been committed/pushed. seems like an easy fix to have it check if it is going to state something relating to it @claudedevs @bcherny @trq212 @amorriscode” [source](https://twitter.com/3045097456/status/2095109579122106826)

#### Other

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-18, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “using @openai codex to push directly and it was a mistake, it randomly pushed using a different email and hence github prints this account (with the same name though) in my commits, the blue icon is me. 😂😂 [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1497868184464105475/status/2111935540580778364)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 154 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Integrated git panel

- Zed, 2026-10-14, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev yet you can’t filter by branch/author/date in the git graph” [source](https://twitter.com/2060822033387139076/status/2110439312676593896)
- Zed, 2026-10-09, @zeddotdev (X): “zed is fast. the only thing i'm missing from vs code is the git interface. it's there, but it's just not the same. the vs code one was more useful for some reason. @zeddotdev” [source](https://twitter.com/1580952441259892738/status/2108425625136701505)
- Zed, 2026-10-08, @zeddotdev (X): “@liamhammett i am slowly moving to @zeddotdev i have pred a bunch of missing features (mostly git related). until these get merged i am using a custom build created locally on a branch that has all my open and closed prs and its been working great for me.” [source](https://twitter.com/1326389321046298624/status/2108168713245741522)

### 2. Optional AI co-author attribution in commits

- Claude Code, 2026-10-08, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “the claude authoring ad is pretty obnoxious though. like i don't care if it says 'written by clanky the bot' but the way claude code puts their brand and logo on commits until you turn it off is very dumb.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x15a8w/strata_rewrote_their_github_history_to_wipe/peqsdsh/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “right now the copilot harness is not respecting the coauthor configuration in vs code.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxev8f/do_copilot_cli_settings_carry_over_to_the_vscode/pemktiz/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-07, @ClaudeDevs (X): “changed from claude code to try code in ui and it simply ignores all instructions to not add claude as commiter/add claude clutter. worse yet, no clear way in configs to disable it? the f is wrong with you? @anthropicai @claudedevs [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2009983580332797952/status/2107847199094612091)

### 3. Merging parallel agents' work

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-29, r/OpenAI (Reddit): “ah, that’s close to what i had in mind. the part i’m really looking for is being able to explore multiple branches and then bring selected ones back together afterward. still, i should probably try the codex app branching first and see how far that gets me. thanks.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/1wsyegk/are_there_any_ai_tools_that_let_you_branch_a/pcpt167/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-28, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “so, yet another dumb gui alternative to tmux that doesn't bring anything of value. you need to think about merge queues and orchestration. solve that problem and you've got a reason for your product to exist.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1ws9tuy/its_time_to_replace_your_claude_desktop/pckp86h/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “thanks for the advice. i would try the way. cursor is very smart about parallel work and treating commits in the same branch. it knows exactly what it changed. as a cursor user, i would suggest this to the claude code team.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wbbac8/one_thing_i_found_cursor_is_smarter_than_claude/p8p68fu/)

### 4. Branch selection when starting a session

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs sorry, i didn't like it. switching branches or deciding whether to use worktree or not became horrible.” [source](https://twitter.com/44541506/status/2110549374086300153)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux why can't i choose the branch to work from in codex app?” [source](https://twitter.com/2106441728429367296/status/2107607290446835930)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “hi @thsottiaux can you bring back branch selection when starting a new thread/worktree in codex app? thanks!” [source](https://twitter.com/1998713733015871488/status/2107600637961584700)

### 5. Reliable first-class worktree support

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-01, r/codex (Reddit): “until they bring it back you can make the worktree yourself, git worktree add ../app-1.2 release-1.2, then open that folder in codex or run codex inside it. it's a normal checkout of that branch, so nothing about it is tied to main.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wuxp2d/worktree_checkbox_we_can_only_create_worktrees/pd7afx6/)
- OpenCode, 2026-09-10, @opencode (X): “tried @opencode but the worktree support is just horrendous. i wish they fix this without having to search how to use the product or needing plugins” [source](https://twitter.com/166894786/status/2097919831123333370)
- OpenCode, 2026-09-05, @opencode (X): “@opencode why don’t you add first-class worktree support? almost any cli has it.” [source](https://twitter.com/229370939/status/2096330790669861152)

### 6. Audit trail of agent git changes

- Zed, 2026-10-06, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev @conradirwin the worktree count is fine. not knowing which agent created fix-final-v3 is the problem.” [source](https://twitter.com/2093430933026148352/status/2107523079543177609)
- Zed, 2026-09-25, @zeddotdev (X): “@bradgessler @zeddotdev i split the suite in my harness after `mcp__workspace__write` returned 200 but the editor still showed old bytes after 2 retries and 11s. do you keep git and agent state in one receipt or separate them?” [source](https://twitter.com/1835841692852682752/status/2103323881117307218)
- Cursor, 2026-09-21, @cursor_ai (X): “@sachinjain024 @cursor_ai small workflow features like this are great harness hooks: capture the command, the transformed request, and the resulting state so agent-assisted changes stay auditable.” [source](https://twitter.com/1870072035608584192/status/2102084609877885325)

### 7. Commit and push buttons in app

- Claude Code, 2026-10-06, @ClaudeDevs (X): “things i'm missing in claude code (desktop app). - custom icons / color coding projects in sidebar. - option to open in app browser in empty chat - commit/push shortcuts (one click thing) @claudedevs” [source](https://twitter.com/114347117/status/2107347530241773856)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-02, r/codex (Reddit): “i just want to know what worktree i’m in and to be able to create a branch again without opening the terminal.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1ww5ab7/openai_is_doing_way_too_much/pdhq5t8/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-25, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “since the button to commit nicely from the codex app has disappeared, we can only instruct humans to "push it nicely" with heartfelt feelings...” [source](https://twitter.com/38659716/status/2103329359612592397)

### 8. Jujutsu version control support

- Zed, 2026-09-18, r/ZedEditor (Reddit): “i keep reading you can use it on the web, but can’t find any links to access it, how do you do so? a few requests: \- a custom url openai provider \- base the jj implementation on worktrees instead of copies please!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ZedEditor/comments/1whydrw/delta_in_public_beta/panpthq/)

### 9. Manage pull requests within the app

- Cursor, 2026-09-16, @cursor_ai (X): “started using cursor's codebase as my main git interface for pr reviews but, there's no way i could find to mark a pr ready on the interface. maybe @cursor_ai team can help. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1508512150519640065/status/2100148747225460801)
- Amp, 2026-09-03, @AmpCode (X): “great product @ampcode & @thorstenball! it would be great to have a way to manage github prs directly from the ui, for example to squash and merge them. it would also be nice to have a dedicated button in the ui to access the pr. or am i missing something?” [source](https://twitter.com/22273057/status/2095434738190192805)

### 10. Commits under the human user's identity

- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “even if i using other model provider with claude code and it still put it as author” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x15a8w/strata_rewrote_their_github_history_to_wipe/persp1h/)
- Amp, 2026-09-20, @AmpCode (X): “@ampcode @vercel (this is so you don't have to pay for a vercel seat for "amp <[email]>". if you had amp commit as you and not under its own name, then this was never a problem.)” [source](https://twitter.com/784008/status/2101629533300613604)
- Amp, 2026-10-10, @AmpCode (X): “.@ampcode it would be awesome if on a multiplayer thread (that someone else created) i could explicitly tell the agent to use my git identity. sometimes we end up handing off a thread to someone else after creating and it is awkward to have the code ship as if i was authored by the thread creator if someone else was steering.” [source](https://twitter.com/93491238/status/2108950880892448811)

### 11. Configurable worktree setup and file sharing

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-28, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@platonmazarakis @openai codex feature request: support sparse checkout when creating worktrees. large tracked assets make each task copy hundreds of mb; i recovered 3.37 gib from eight worktrees. let projects choose paths before checkout, with tasks able to add more as needed.” [source](https://twitter.com/7183952/status/2104664591011905801)

### 12. Opt out of mandatory worktrees and branches

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “please can we drop the mandatory enforced usage of worktree for claude desktop users? @claudeai @claudedevs they are the worst update i have seen since using the app almost daily for the last 6 months.” [source](https://twitter.com/1337713826/status/2110783718247821604)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
