# Computer use and browser control (`work.computer_browser_use`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.computer_browser_use

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent operates desktop apps and browsers well, without taking over the user's windows.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Images, PDFs and file attachments as input](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.attachments.md) for reading screenshots.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 856. Complaint share: 47%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

OpenAI Codex is the best AI coding agent at operating browsers and desktop apps. Users say its computer use is good enough for testing desktop apps and for running tools whose interfaces they would rather not learn. This criterion is a small share of what users rate: 1.0%. OpenAI Codex users rate it 3.24 times as often as other users. They also write 50% of the category's complaints here, though praise still outnumbers complaints for OpenAI Codex. Claude Code and Google Antigravity rank low. Users of both describe browser control that is slow, manual or missing.

### What separates the best from the rest

OpenAI Codex users describe computer use as a reason to keep the app. They say it makes testing desktop apps easier, and one Claude Code user says it works without the browser tab in front. Claude Code users say its control is slow, too manual and needs the browser tab in front. Google Antigravity users say its browser command sometimes fails, and they ask for built-in browser and computer use. They make 20 of 66 requests for native computer use and 23 of 39 requests for a built-in browser panel.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is missing or refused computer use. Either the product offers no control, or the agent says it cannot operate the computer and hands back manual steps. It accounts for 24% of complaining user-weeks. OpenAI Codex users write most complaints about control tools that crash or never start (72%) and about misread screens and missed clicks (58%). The only named mode Claude Code leads is browsers that open without the user's logins, at 48%.

409 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer use missing, refused or denied | 98 | 105 | OpenAI Codex 43, Claude Code 18, Google Antigravity 13, Cursor 7, Devin 6, Amp 3, OpenCode 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Cline 1, Conductor 1, Pi 1 | The product offers no computer or browser control for a model, surface or plan, or the agent refuses or wrongly claims it cannot operate the computer and hands back manual steps instead; cases where the feature exists but technically breaks are excluded. |
| Inaccurate perception and clicking of UI | 60 | 64 | OpenAI Codex 35, Claude Code 10, Google Antigravity 4, Cursor 4, Pi 3, Devin 2, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1 | Once control is running, the agent misreads application or page state, cannot see minimized or hidden windows, clicks at offset coordinates, cannot click or type, or fails at basic steps inside desktop apps like Blender; slowness alone and setup failures are excluded. |
| Control tooling crashes or is unavailable on platform | 58 | 63 | OpenAI Codex 42, Google Antigravity 7, Claude Code 5, OpenCode 3, Cursor 1 | Computer-use or browser-control tools fail to load, crash (e.g. sandbox or REPL process exits), return no apps, or are not supported on a given OS, environment or app version, so control never starts; cases where control starts but then acts badly are excluded. |
| Slow, token-hungry computer use | 48 | 51 | OpenAI Codex 22, Claude Code 16, Cursor 6, Google Antigravity 2, Amp 1, Factory 1 | Computer or browser use completes, or attempts, tasks far more slowly than a human or burns a large share of usage limits through screenshot loops, repeated checks and retries; complaints about tasks failing outright without any cost or speed angle are excluded. |
| Agent takes over the user's screen and input | 38 | 38 | OpenAI Codex 21, Claude Code 12, Cursor 4, Devin 1 | The agent grabs focus, moves the mouse, types keystrokes, brings windows to the front or acts in the wrong workspace or window while the user is working, which interrupts or corrupts what the user is doing; agents that work only in their own window or in the background do not count. |
| Browser lacks the user's logged-in session | 31 | 32 | Claude Code 15, OpenAI Codex 8, Google Antigravity 3, Cursor 2, OpenCode 2, Amp 1 | The agent's browser opens without the user's cookies, profile or logins, or cannot get through passkeys, captchas, bot detection or sites that block the extension, so authenticated tasks fail; general network or URL blocking unrelated to identity is excluded. |
| Poor management of tabs, windows and instances | 19 | 20 | OpenAI Codex 8, Claude Code 7, Google Antigravity 3, Cursor 1 | The agent leaves tabs or headless browsers open, closes tabs it should keep, spawns duplicate app instances, stalls on background tabs or popups, or opens the wrong browser surface, so sessions become cluttered or hang; problems with input focus belong to the takeover mode instead. |
| Agent browser cannot reach sites | 18 | 21 | OpenAI Codex 11, Claude Code 3, Google Antigravity 2, Cursor 2 | The agent's browser or cloud browser is blocked by policy, sandbox or network limits from loading ordinary websites, localhost or LAN addresses that are reachable outside the agent; failures caused by missing logins or bot detection are excluded. |
| Other | 49 | 49 | Claude Code 18, OpenAI Codex 18, Google Antigravity 6, Cursor 2, OpenCode 2, Pi 2, Devin 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 361 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

- Complaint, 2026-09-09, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “where else can i use my gh copilot tokens? github copilot is cool but not for genetic workflows, lacks computer use, remote control, etc etc. seems like there should be better alternatives” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wbbhzs/open_code_vs_github_cp/)

### Factory

- Praise, 2026-10-12, @droid (X): “a seam split my typegpu planet from pole to pole. @droid dragged it on the iphone simulator with @swmansion's argent until the seam faced the camera, fixed the shader, then dragged it again. no seam. run 2 of 3 · #closetheloop [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/947588323/status/2109630161578754500)
- Complaint, 2026-09-28, @FactoryAI (X): “@droid @factoryai i think i agree heavily with @da7_tech ‘s feedback memory is probably one of the things that would make the experience “stickier”. computer-use could be a little better. if you can achieve a more codex desktop-like experience for factory desktop, that would be incredible.” [source](https://twitter.com/1920233886933819392/status/2104644210666467416)
