# Can do the user's kind of task (`work.capability`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.capability

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent, with its models, succeeds at the user's kind of task: its size, complexity, language or domain, including building a whole feature in one go or failing at it. The post names the task or its size but no narrower failure behaviour.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Frontend and visual UI output](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.frontend_ui.md) for visual UI work and [Diagnosing and fixing reported bugs](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.bug_diagnosis.md) for fixing a reported bug. Not this: see [Quality got worse or better over time](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.quality_drift.md) for a change over time. Not this: see the other work.* and verify.* leaves when a specific behaviour (looping, scope, false claims, breaking code) is named. Not this: see general.unspecific when no task is named.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 15665. Complaint share: 36%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code is best at doing users' kind of task, with Devin next. Users describe Claude Code building complex parts of a project from scratch, and some call it the agent to have for technical work. Users rate this criterion more than any other of 63, and it makes up 18.3% of what users of AI coding agents rate. OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity rank low, in the last two places. OpenAI Codex users write 44% of the category's complaints here, and Google Antigravity users write 14%.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe finished work: apps built and deployed over a weekend, games built end to end, and pull requests merged on the first try. Users of the trailing agents describe limits. They say the agent suits only light, low-complexity tasks, becomes unusable in a large monorepo, or fails at a task they have done many times. One user says they need a second model to fix its errors.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest named complaint is a model that needs repeated prompting where a rival gets it right the first time. It makes up 22% of complaining user-weeks, and OpenAI Codex users write 57% of these. OpenAI Codex leads every mode but one. It has 59% of complaints about results that succeed only some of the time and 49% of failures on large or complex tasks. Claude Code comes second or third in each mode.

6021 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Needs many iterations where rivals one-shot | 1353 | 1457 | OpenAI Codex 766, Google Antigravity 184, Claude Code 173, OpenCode 104, Cursor 80, GitHub Copilot 15, Devin 9, Cline 8, Factory 3, Kiro 3, Pi 3, Amp 2, Zed 2, Grok Build 1 | The user says the agent's model needs repeated prompting, or simply gets worse results than a competing model or a cheaper earlier version on the same kind of work; this excludes complaints that blame the harness rather than the model. |
| Fails on large or complex tasks | 816 | 860 | OpenAI Codex 399, Claude Code 188, Google Antigravity 90, OpenCode 53, Cursor 36, Devin 15, GitHub Copilot 14, Pi 9, Cline 4, Factory 3, Amp 1, Augment Code 1, Grok Build 1, Kiro 1, Zed 1 | The agent breaks down, gets lost or needs many review rounds once the task or codebase gets big or complicated (huge refactors, very large repos, multi-step hard problems); this excludes simple tasks and domain-specific gaps. |
| Weak in a specific language or domain | 756 | 809 | OpenAI Codex 315, Claude Code 195, Google Antigravity 121, OpenCode 61, Cursor 18, GitHub Copilot 16, Zed 14, Devin 6, Pi 5, Cline 3, Amp 1, Factory 1 | The agent does poorly in a named language, field or medium, such as blockchain, C++, low-level SIMD, CAD/3D, SVG, cloud DNS config, image analysis or esoteric languages, even when the task isn't large; this excludes general complaints that it is dumb. |
| Trivial errors on simple tasks | 560 | 583 | OpenAI Codex 192, Claude Code 163, Google Antigravity 83, OpenCode 61, Cursor 29, GitHub Copilot 12, Devin 10, Pi 4, Kiro 3, Cline 2, Zed 1 | The agent makes basic mistakes, hallucinates easy-to-check facts or burns hours on small fixes like a padding issue or a simple question; this excludes failures that are put down to task size or a specialist domain. |
| Cannot deliver whole feature in one go | 467 | 479 | OpenAI Codex 232, Claude Code 119, Google Antigravity 52, OpenCode 23, Cursor 21, GitHub Copilot 7, Pi 4, Amp 2, Devin 2, Zed 2, Conductor 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | Asked to build a full feature, app or spec end to end, the agent skips parts, delivers something generic or half-finished, or ends with nothing that runs; this excludes small edits and issues that are only about speed. |
| Inconsistent results on previously handled tasks | 393 | 403 | OpenAI Codex 231, Claude Code 65, Google Antigravity 41, OpenCode 29, Cursor 14, GitHub Copilot 5, Pi 3, Devin 2, Amp 1, Cline 1, Kiro 1 | The agent succeeds at a kind of task only some of the time or on some days, or fails at tasks it used to finish reliably; this excludes failures that happen every time. |
| Harness makes capable model underperform | 239 | 245 | OpenAI Codex 69, Google Antigravity 49, Claude Code 31, OpenCode 28, Cursor 18, GitHub Copilot 17, Kiro 10, Pi 6, Cline 5, Devin 2, Amp 1, Conductor 1, Factory 1, Zed 1 | The user blames the agent app or wrapper, not the underlying model, for failing at tasks the same model handles well in another harness; this excludes complaints about the model itself. |
| Outdated knowledge of tools and APIs | 55 | 56 | Google Antigravity 15, OpenAI Codex 14, Claude Code 12, OpenCode 12, Cursor 2 | The agent keeps getting current third-party services, APIs or platforms wrong because its knowledge is out of date; this excludes reasoning mistakes made on information that is current. |
| Other | 1890 | 1969 | OpenAI Codex 802, Claude Code 454, Google Antigravity 217, OpenCode 177, Cursor 89, GitHub Copilot 51, Zed 24, Devin 23, Pi 22, Amp 9, Kiro 8, Cline 7, Factory 4, Augment Code 1, Conductor 1, Warp 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 377 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Reliable work without babysitting

- OpenCode, 2026-10-06, @opencode (X): “@opencode model should be super cheap if not free. unreliable, not optimized for work. capable of handling basic tasks like other 10 cheap models” [source](https://twitter.com/1754967357611495424/status/2107476363452268702)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “i wanna ad that, ai really only needs improvments in the 3d space, such as rigging/animating. astra still struggles with creating face models and humans, i think once big tech irons out these issues, aswell as some others, the next big things to tackle is audio. i feel audio and music is the last frontier that these compaines will come for” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x340s8/codex_is_an_underrated_music_production_tool_ive/pfaav2c/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Grok Build

- Praise, 2026-10-03, r/OpenAI (Reddit): “ah yeah i do this with deep seek 👌. how do you structure it to the cheaper model do you detail what llm you are going to use and any other key items? sorry i don't have an it background and but getting the hang of prompting. grok build was super easy to make a full website with online shop linking to payment facilities etc. again i was using deep seek in the background to check for errors and they worked fairly well together” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/1wwin4z/why_doesnt_chatgpt_warn_you_before_wasting_30/pdkytnj/)
- Praise, 2026-09-04, r/vibecoding (Reddit): “grok build does a great job, especially if you are looking to create assets for images or videos, like if you're building a video game. it generates characters with grok image as part of your request to build. really great. if you want to build in local models into those processes you can do that too.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/comments/1w74l2u/is_everyone_here_on_claude_or_codex_only_anyone/p7v9cyj/)

### Conductor

- Praise, 2026-10-15, @conductor_build (X): “latest iteration on our internal tooling for managing hundreds of issues, prs, and discussions. months ago, i had @conductor_build & claude scan our old issues and prs, organize by group, learn my voice, and then respond. long story short, we don't ship v6 without new tools. ### Warp

- Praise, 2026-09-15, r/AI_Agents (Reddit): “warp terminal [warp.dev]([link]) has its own agent as terminal shell so you can quickly access it by typing prompt into terminal. it has byok so you can quickly launch it for your needs. quite good for simple tasks, bash, and system manintance” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/AI_Agents/comments/1wh25jc/whats_a_minimal_and_extremely_fast_cli_coding/pa1xhny/)
- Praise, 2026-09-02, @warpdotdev (X): “every so often, i forget i can just use agents to fix my other agents… i went deep into manually debugging some issues when i updated my @openclaw to the current version, then realized i could just let the @warpdotdev agent do it all for me way faster. hard to break old habits 🤖” [source](https://twitter.com/16102111/status/2095246367845192112)
- Praise, 2026-10-03, r/AI_Agents (Reddit): “[warp.dev](http://warp.dev) has earned it's spot as my sysadmin for linux, mac and windows. it can do anything i can do. if it needs root privs, it lets me type in my password and then it continues on. no sand box. you can follow the link i gave for the astra analysis. i have yet to give t3 code a real workout - but i am thrilled with herdr” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/AI_Agents/comments/1wwb56o/new_workflow_handles_multiple_simultaneous_agent/pdj8d3m/)
