# Diagnosing and fixing reported bugs (`work.bug_diagnosis`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/work.bug_diagnosis

Area: [Doing the work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)

**Definition.** Whether the agent finds the root cause of a failing behaviour and fixes it without step-by-step guidance.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Agent-performed code review finds real issues](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/verify.agent_code_review.md) for reviewing code to find unknown issues.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 515. Complaint share: 32%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

No coding agent clearly leads at finding and fixing bugs. OpenCode comes first, and its users complain least often among the ranked agents, but its score stays within the category norm. So do the scores of Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. Users rarely rate this: it is the 54th most rated of 63 criteria. Google Antigravity is last of the four ranked agents and the only one worse than the norm. Its users post about as many complaints as praise. OpenAI Codex users write 40% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

No agent ranks high, and none ranks low. The scores of the four ranked agents overlap, so the difference shows in what users complain about. OpenCode draws few complaints, and 3 of its 9 are about the agent guessing at causes without reading the code. Complaints about OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity most often describe long sessions that go in circles without finding the bug. They also describe fixes that patch the symptom, and claims that a bug is fixed when it is not.

- **Ranks high**: no agent
- **Ranks low**: no agent

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is the agent failing to find a bug after long effort. Often the bug is a simple one that another model or the user then finds quickly. This mode covers 34% of complaints, and OpenAI Codex users write 51% of it. Every complaint about a bug fix that breaks other parts of the app comes from OpenAI Codex users. Claude Code users write 47% of the complaints about real bugs missed during audits.

167 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fails to find bug after long effort | 57 | 61 | OpenAI Codex 29, Claude Code 13, Google Antigravity 6, Cursor 5, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, Zed 1 | The agent spends hours or a large share of the usage quota going in circles on a bug, often a simple one, without finding it, while another model or the user finds it quickly; this excludes runs that end with a wrong fix being declared done. |
| Misses real bugs during audits | 19 | 21 | Claude Code 9, OpenAI Codex 7, Google Antigravity 2, Cursor 1 | When asked to review or bug-hunt, the agent overlooks significant defects (subtle races, security or permission mistakes, obvious missing lines) or wrongly says no bug exists, which other models or human review later catch; this excludes reporting bugs that do not exist. |
| Guesses causes without inspecting code | 16 | 17 | Claude Code 6, OpenAI Codex 3, OpenCode 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Amp 1, Google Antigravity 1 | Given an error log or bug report, the agent lists plausible or invented causes, or confidently diagnoses from a wrong assumption, without reading the relevant source, reproducing the bug, or tracing execution; this excludes cases where it investigates properly but simply fails to find the bug. |
| Patches symptoms instead of root cause | 16 | 17 | Claude Code 5, OpenAI Codex 4, Google Antigravity 3, OpenCode 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Cursor 1 | The agent works around a failure with guard branches, bypasses, rewrites, deleted tests, rolled-back code, or degraded alternatives instead of finding and fixing the real cause; this excludes fixes that correctly address the cause but are incomplete in scope. |
| Needs step-by-step guidance to debug | 10 | 10 | OpenAI Codex 4, Cursor 2, Amp 1, Google Antigravity 1, Claude Code 1, OpenCode 1 | The agent only reaches the cause after the user points out the problem, supplies hints, walks it through debug steps, or tells it to keep investigating, and it ignores evidence the user already gave; this excludes cases where it never reaches the cause even with guidance. |
| Claims bug fixed when it persists | 9 | 9 | OpenAI Codex 4, Claude Code 3, Google Antigravity 2 | The agent edits code and says the reported bug is resolved, and keeps saying so through repeated user reports that nothing changed; this excludes cases where the agent openly admits it could not find the cause. |
| Bug fix breaks other functionality | 4 | 4 | OpenAI Codex 4 | While trying to fix one reported bug the agent adds new bugs, regressions, or out-of-scope changes elsewhere in the app; this excludes regressions from feature work that was not a bug-fix request. |
| Reports hallucinated or irrelevant bugs | 4 | 4 | Google Antigravity 1, Claude Code 1, OpenAI Codex 1, OpenCode 1 | In bug-hunting or review the agent reports fabricated, partly hallucinated, or trivial issues as real defects, which leads to wasted churn; this excludes missing real bugs. |
| Other | 35 | 35 | Claude Code 14, OpenAI Codex 12, Google Antigravity 7, Cursor 2 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Fails to find bug after long effort

- Cursor, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai a new best model every week and somehow my bug is still the same bug” [source](https://twitter.com/1959439328683405312/status/2110922089138184625)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-14, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “ya i did actually from my friends company account and it was unable to identify the problem from both model of claude opus 5.5 and fable 5.2” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1x5obg4/sexy_model/pgo78wm/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “astra trying to fix something for 2 days. not fixed. opus 5.5 in 2 hours. fixed. more than fixed. better than ever.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wz58hw/how_does_opus_55_actually_compare_to_astra_and_is/pger27q/)

#### Misses real bugs during audits

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-28, r/codex (Reddit): “my opus 5.5 in charge of marketing casually uncovered a big bug in my ios app when i told it that he could ‘read only’ the app code to understand the general functionality. both astra and sol (5.6) missed it. even i missed it because it only occurred on new device registrations…” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1ws4dp4/tibo_your_resets_have_no_effect_anymore/pciebzk/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-26, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i ran over 6 optimization/ bug fix tour on a project and it finds several bugs every time. even i say " do analyze all files do not miss even a code line " it still struggles to catch in one shot.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wqnjkp/be_careful_with_opus_55s_confidence/pc5i4n5/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-25, r/codex (Reddit): “sol is a pile of garbage. $20 plan opus is finding more bugs than my pro plan with astra max can.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wq55sw/opus_wipes_the_floor_with_sol/pc19c9i/)

#### Guesses causes without inspecting code

- OpenCode, 2026-10-12, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “but it doesn't even say anything with -lv 3 and -lv 4 is an absolute mess i don't feel like reading and it seems opencode with the free models is dumb as shit so it won't debug and just say "mtp is just slower unless you run f16 bruh" like fym” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x42lp3/why_is_mtp_slower_than_standard_decode/pfgk5xu/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-26, r/codex (Reddit): “like bro, [link] the f\_uck you mean "the likely cause" lmfao. as if i didn't ask it to figure out the issue on the code, it's just guessing what it thinks may be the error based on my report.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wr1oir/they_are_aware_and_working_on_it_apparently_just/pc8w30v/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-09, @ClaudeDevs (X): “just like junior off-shore engineers, when i ask @claudedevs fable 5.1 "why does npm run deploy:plugins" not install the plugins, it explains why it did not install all the plugins, and makes no attempt to recognize how stupid that is.” [source](https://twitter.com/8899792/status/2097705732355572064)

#### Patches symptoms instead of root cause

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “🥲switched from 3.7 to 3.8 because of 3.7 leaving and after using to fix few bugs i realised it fix the issueonly and not looking over all picture ( prompts are same manner like 3.7) so idk whether is it somthing wrong with model or me” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x64msl/gemini_38_flash_is_a_beast/pgugx4p/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-13, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i had an instance in july where claude fixed a bug by wrapping it in an if, so that the code executed only on the path that currently worked.. human intervention sometimes is definitely needed.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x5aznh/interviewing_in_the_ai_age/pgkuhxx/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, r/codex (Reddit): “yes. it seems sol and to a lesser degree astra seems to easily get side tracked and devolve into solving symptoms rather than the root cause. i've discovered asking a new agent to resume an existing plan is easier than begging the existing one to focus.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wy3589/my_message_from_codex_eight_hours_is_too_long_and/pdzhlhm/)

#### Needs step-by-step guidance to debug

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-17, r/codex (Reddit): “i appreciate the response. i know how to use devtools to find out what the issue is, and so does codex, it just is lazy lol. if i say 'it's wrong, go figure it out then fix it', it literally just goes and fixes it and it's like bruh why didnt you do that the first time...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wi0wv3/agi_cant_center_a_div/pablehz/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-16, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i have no clue on how to explain this to claude i said it jitters but it updated something and it still remains” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1whsoxm/how_would_i_prompt_claude_to_get_rid_of_the/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-07, r/codex (Reddit): “i was furious this morning because for some reason astra couldn’t access my workspace, and didn’t even try to resolve the issue with me. i knew the problem was that i didn’t give it enough /permission but it was never able to figure that out.. even tried to give it hints.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w9mlue/astra_does_not_follow_instructions/p8cotmo/)

#### Claims bug fixed when it persists

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-20, r/codex (Reddit): “it's a small, but technical task and sol has been an idiot lately. edit: literally just ran into an issue i told sol to fix earlier and it's still completely present, totally unchanged...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wl35pj/skill_issues/pavkhrk/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-05, r/codex (Reddit): “but if it fou d the bug you'd think it'd fix it no? instead it went to computer use to validate then died. and i was there with no usage, and the bug still there.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w7kvf7/gpt6_astra_wow/p7ycrx3/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-02, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “man i am going back to sol. opus 5 is stupid and talks too much. worst thing is that it says about the problem but fails to fix it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w59ies/my_average_opus_5_experience/p7e7ews/)

#### Reports hallucinated or irrelevant bugs

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-02, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “ran a bug hunting session on my actual codebase (where i know where some problems are approximately) with gemini 3.8 flash and glm 5.3 parallely. glm definitely found out more relevant bugs while gemini 3.8 flash missed some and also reported 1 partially halucinated bug. for context gemini 3.7 flash 1 day ago found 1 totally fabricated bug and 3 partially halucinated bugs and missed out a lot of real problems.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1w5i29e/review_of_gemini_38_flash_from_a_person_who/p7f999o/)

#### Other

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “two times in two days astra stopped short of a goal and marked it "stalled" because the feature needing to be implemented was failing a quality gate. because of a bug astra introduced. it just basically went "nah failed gate, nothing i can do" opus in the same situation sees the failed gate, analyzes why and then starts fixing its bug. its infuriating” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x4kfy9/things_have_really_changed_for_me/pgf3wf4/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 24 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Fix reported bugs directly

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-27, @antigravity (X): “hey antigravity team, please study this. i think you will also notice that problem and please implement a fix for this. @antigravity [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1982427257387061249/status/2104130014975578184)
- Cursor, 2026-09-09, @cursor_ai (X): “hey @elonmusk plz fix this stupid bug in cursor @cursor_ai [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1931046065408483328/status/2097731997712183412)
- Cursor, 2026-09-07, @cursor_ai (X): “wow, @cursor_ai - wouldn't have thought you'd sorted this out by now ??? - i have the same issue... could one of your ai agents write the 3 lines of code to do this? [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/16145593/status/2097036339111657539)

### 2. Stronger bug finding and inspection

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-30, r/codex (Reddit): “we need benchmarks about existing massive codebases. id also love a qa benchmark to test models abilities to find bugs running software rather than via code.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wtisui/huge_if_true/pd063cc/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-30, @antigravity (X): “hahaha... this is also my request, so that to find and fix bugs, we have a strong grip @sundarpichai @antigravity [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/108435397/status/2105163214128644213)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-25, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs sad we have to go to a chinese open-weight model for this. claude should be able to audit and do pen tests on the code it wrote.” [source](https://twitter.com/44986659/status/2103572235369795823)

### 3. Root-cause fixes without extra prompting

- Claude Code, 2026-10-03, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs seems ok workaround but why not solve this in the model itself so it answers right in the first place.” [source](https://twitter.com/1791773006433259521/status/2106469366015414657)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-01, r/codex (Reddit): “yes, i have tried terra and luna. they are not appiciable for my project. for example i'm asking it to fix a bug, after reading 5 files (there are 8000 files in my project) it edits a file, says that they fixed it, but it actaully didnt. i said "the issue presist" 5 times, but still the same result. gpt 5.6 sol fixed in the first try.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w4gbcs/oh_come_on_now_i_was_excited/p77illc/)

### 4. Commit-comparison root cause analysis for regressions

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Google Antigravity

- Praise, 2026-10-11, r/cursor (Reddit): “and the usage you do get sucks what the hell. today it 'shipped code with bugs' instead of fix them i just tried google's antigravity free plan and it identified and fixed all the bugs in 1 prompt.. spent all day wasting time with cursor” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x2mjaj/cursor_ultras_entire_monthly_usage_feels_like/pf5wuq2/)
- Praise, 2026-10-05, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i used 3.8 flash to debug our server side logic to find out vulnerabilites and possible exploites unnoticed by the developers. it took a long time but it did find every issue like a professional cyber security analyst.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wxuym8/i_achieved_a_1_score_with_gemini_38_flash_imagine/pdxqlz4/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-06, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “i have noticed that now it cannot seem to find the bugs and bottlenecks hidden and i have to switch to claude to fix that. for claude, all it took was 1 prompt for gemini flash 3.8: 7 prompts. all were the same. i have sent multiple feedbacks with screenshots and proof attached.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1wz85dk/is_it_just_me_or_is_gemini_flash_38_a_lot_more/)

- Praise, 2026-09-30, @DevinAI (X): “@boardyai @devinai it really was. chrome honored the gamma chunk and ffmpeg didn't, so the still and the matching video frame looked like two different shots. swe-2 found it by measuring pixel values across the cut instead of eyeballing it. the fix goes into showtime's snapshot command next.” [source](https://twitter.com/195622492/status/2105341028882653686)

### Amp

- Praise, 2026-09-21, @AmpCode (X): “@hipreetam93 @opencode i've been using this model in @ampcode for a bunch of triage and scraper fixers and it's been very good so far. found an issue sol 5.6 high didn't for weeks! definitely looking at these models more now.” [source](https://twitter.com/9111552/status/2101932745488257445)
- Praise, 2026-09-01, @AmpCode (X): “for bug fixes and troubleshooting, @ampcode really nails the kind of coding agent i want out of the box. it's precise, minimal, and non-verbose. it fixes the issue, changes what needs changing, and gets out of the way.” [source](https://twitter.com/347237526/status/2094883834227470647)
- Complaint, 2026-10-09, @AmpCode (X): “starting to believe this is @ampcode's doing ....? i don't get this behavior from openai models in any other coding harnesses. eg: you paste in an error log and the model just responds with a vague possible causes rather than reading the source code and finding the bug. - Complaint, 2026-10-09, @AmpCode (X): “@ampcode it feels like you're chatting with an agent that has no idea it's a coding agent and has access to the source code. yes, i haven't explicitly asked the agent to debug but you paste in that error log on any other coding harness and the model will come back with a nice bug report.” [source](https://twitter.com/1437462200/status/2108435126040531202)

### Factory

- Praise, 2026-09-18, @FactoryAI (X): “i shipped reposcape v0.1.0 i wanted something local that could help me open a codebase and see how the pieces connect built it with @droid by @factoryai, then ran it on a few repos. it caught scanner and rust bugs, fixed those before release check it out [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2039951542518718464/status/2101045833604936018)

### GitHub Copilot

- Praise, 2026-09-18, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@githubcopilot is so much more than a dev tool. it just debugged why microsoft store randomly opened all the time, did quite some complex analysis and figured it was a powertoys shortcut accidently triggered. back in the days i would run into these annoying issues and never find out what causes it. i would even format my entire system to get rid off issues. so that's solved entirely now, wow” [source](https://twitter.com/1615135928737009665/status/2100944142943518743)
- Complaint, 2026-09-21, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@githubcopilot @openmp_arb what was interesting to watch is the response of the bot in @githubcopilot (it was a mix of luna and the microsoft models). it did provide a half baked theory of why the problems arose (partly it's fault for not refactoring internal types ie changing unsigned int to size_t ) but” [source](https://twitter.com/1561408746697306113/status/2102064783864521012)
- Complaint, 2026-09-21, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@githubcopilot @openmp_arb @geminiapp how @githubcopilot and @geminiapp handled the diagnosis and the solution realized how much more remains to be done to have truly trustworthy #ai. for starters creating a new compilation path instead of fixing the root cause which is a solution a novice would accept makes me” [source](https://twitter.com/1561408746697306113/status/2102064802445357495)
- Complaint, 2026-09-21, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@githubcopilot @openmp_arb the solution offered was bananas: remove lto from #gcc builds & add a new make path that defaulted #llvm to use a simple @openmp_arb collapsed loop pragma (removing ~ 2/3 of the performance gains of the nested/tiled loops). at this point i had run out of money for @githubcopilot” [source](https://twitter.com/1561408746697306113/status/2102064786804732042)

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-10-11, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i had the same problem. i asked him to find the cause and solve it. he was clear and effective. pi.dev is really cool in his ability to self-inspect and self-fix” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x3ajxg/how_to_restore_cut_and_paste/pfbtp33/)
- Praise, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i told my pi. it fixed it itself for about $0.003 and one prompt.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wwn6tl/copy_from_tui_does_not_work_anymore_after_recent/pdmor4h/)

### Conductor

- Praise, 2026-09-06, @conductor_build (X): “about to head onto a 6-hour flight; multiple bugs reported by my customers. used to cause massive stress. not anymore. paste the intercom conversation link into @conductor_build with remote workspaces. get ai to handle it. these issues will be fixed before i land, dont even worry about it.” [source](https://twitter.com/1147023900552773633/status/2096701683430838765)

### Kiro

- Praise, 2026-10-08, @kirodotdev (X): “one rawtree api endpoint spent 14 hours failing roughly 1 in 5 requests. @kirodotdev figured out why from a single plain-english question, using the rawtree power. 🧵 [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2029133132071632896/status/2108185562511278432)
