# How the interface shows work, and what the user can configure (`ui.display_settings`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/ui.display_settings

Area: [Interface and sessions](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/interface.md)

**Definition.** How the CLI, TUI, IDE panel or app shows the agent's activity (tool calls, diffs, logs, subagent progress, scrolling, fonts, layout) and which settings, keybindings, themes and presets the user can change.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Usage meter visibility and accuracy](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.usage_meter.md) for usage displays. Not this: see [Saving, switching, resuming and rewinding sessions](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/ui.session_history.md) for saving and resuming sessions. Not this: see [Reasoning effort setting and its defaults](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.effort_control.md) for reasoning-effort settings.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 3749. Complaint share: 66%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code is best at showing its work. Its users say they can follow what the agent is doing, with a task outline and progress they can keep track of, and they like the look of the desktop app. This is the 8th most rated of 63 criteria, and most of what users say about it is complaint: 66.0% of rated user-weeks. OpenAI Codex ranks low, 11th of 12, and its users write 33% of the category's complaints here. Google Antigravity is last.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe interfaces that are clean and easy to read. They mention a visible plan of the agent's tasks, a terminal interface they call gorgeous or minimal, screen reader support and tabs for separate work. Users of the trailing agents describe updates that bury or remove controls they used, thinking steps replaced by a bare status, long lines cut off and a layout they find hard to understand. Zed users raise this often: it is 22.1% of what they rate, against 6.1% for other agents.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a cluttered layout, where sidebars, thread lists and menus make work hard to find. It accounts for 21% of complaining user-weeks. OpenAI Codex has the most complaints in every mode but one. Broken text selection and copy is the most concentrated mode, and OpenAI Codex holds 47% of it. Claude Code leads the exception, features removed or broken by updates, with 31%. Zed holds 25% of complaints about fonts and themes.

2506 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cluttered or disorienting layout and navigation | 514 | 550 | OpenAI Codex 173, Claude Code 87, OpenCode 69, Google Antigravity 41, Cursor 33, Zed 33, Amp 30, Devin 13, Pi 13, Factory 6, Conductor 5, GitHub Copilot 4, Warp 4, Cline 3 | Sidebars, thread lists, panes, menus and screens are badly organized, waste space, duplicate entries, can't be split side by side, or make it hard to find threads, projects and older messages; missing settings and visual styling problems are out. |
| Agent activity and reasoning hidden from view | 406 | 421 | OpenAI Codex 141, Claude Code 108, Google Antigravity 39, Cursor 33, OpenCode 30, Amp 15, GitHub Copilot 12, Pi 9, Devin 8, Zed 6, Conductor 2, Factory 2, Cline 1 | The interface collapses, summarizes or leaves out what the agent is doing (tool calls, commands, reasoning, progress, time estimates, thread status) so the user can't follow or check the work; this covers misleading status labels such as 'blocked' or 'completed', but not general layout clutter. |
| Removed or regressed UI features after updates | 387 | 405 | Claude Code 120, OpenAI Codex 108, OpenCode 49, Google Antigravity 25, Cursor 19, Amp 16, Zed 13, Conductor 10, GitHub Copilot 10, Devin 5, Cline 4, Pi 3, Warp 3, Factory 2 | An update removes or breaks a UI capability users relied on, such as buttons, tabs, sidebar actions, a visual editor, filters, or commands that work in one pane but not another; new feature requests with no earlier version are out. |
| Rendering glitches, flicker and laggy scrolling | 329 | 343 | OpenAI Codex 114, Google Antigravity 38, Claude Code 36, OpenCode 34, Zed 31, Pi 25, Cursor 23, Amp 9, GitHub Copilot 6, Kiro 4, Factory 3, Cline 2, Conductor 2, Devin 1, Warp 1 | The UI draws content wrongly or performs poorly: flickering animations, scroll hijacking, slow scrolling or menus, jumping viewports or input boxes, broken markdown, RTL or mobile rendering, and wrong labels shown; missing features are out. |

| Insufficient font, theme and accessibility customization | 165 | 173 | OpenAI Codex 50, Zed 41, Claude Code 29, Amp 10, Google Antigravity 10, Pi 8, OpenCode 6, Factory 4, Cursor 2, Cline 1, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | Users can't adjust font size, typeface, contrast, colours, themes or decorative effects enough for legibility or comfort, including accessibility needs; layout structure and broken setting persistence are out. |
| Missing or conflicting keyboard shortcuts | 144 | 159 | OpenAI Codex 49, Claude Code 34, Zed 15, OpenCode 10, Google Antigravity 9, Cursor 7, Pi 7, Amp 4, Warp 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Factory 2, Cline 1, Devin 1 | Common actions such as switching models or modes, scrolling, starting new files or using history have no quick keybinding, or existing shortcuts were changed, clash with the OS or input method, or fire unintended actions; mouse-only UI requests are out. |
| Text selection and copy broken | 73 | 84 | OpenAI Codex 34, Claude Code 17, Pi 6, OpenCode 5, Amp 4, Google Antigravity 4, Cursor 1, Kiro 1, Warp 1 | The user can't reliably select, highlight or copy text from the CLI, TUI or app, for example through inserted line breaks, invisible highlight colours, animations interfering, or status bars that can't be selected; general readability complaints are out. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 2122 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i dont get why people didnt like the todo list thing. i kind of like seeing an outline of the overall stuff claude is trying to do” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6iggz/claude_uses_todo_lists_again_i_thought_they/phf09re/)
- Praise, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “so much better. thank you anthropic. when you had dozens of task chips, you couldn’t keep track of which parents were managing which chips. problem solved.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8i7nf/task_chip_management_is/)

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-10-16, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i think he means leveraging a multiplexer to create different panels that you can then resize, put on a tab, etc. that would be a rather fancy enhancement but i very much enjoy the current implementation, it's a great idea.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x6mwd9/split_thoughtstools_usageresponses_in_separate/ph1sr7a/)
- Praise, 2026-10-16, @pidotdev (X): “i'm impressed with @pidotdev it's the second terminal-based harness i see implementing good accessibility for screen readers. i've tried @opencode and the accessibility is bad unfortunately. i used the web version, it works well. @thdxr please improve the tui accessibility.” [source](https://twitter.com/1988730539722043392/status/2111135168748511362)

### OpenCode

- Praise, 2026-10-16, r/opencode (Reddit): “dsh blows in my opinion and not in a good way. if i wanted a bloated ux i’d stick with claude or codex - i use opencode and omp for the minimalist/terminal interface. the latter is a move in the opposite direction.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x7iqzv/is_opencode_v2_quietly_becoming_the_better/ph6zgs1/)
- Praise, 2026-10-16, r/cursor (Reddit): “the solution for me was to leave cursor, acquire claude max for $100, and instead of using it through the terminal, i use it in opencode + openchamber, which offered me a rich development interface.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x7d6j4/cursors_days_are_gone_pro_lasts_5_days_super/ph39dyg/)
