# Connecting own API keys, local models and custom endpoints (`setup.provider_byok_local`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/setup.provider_byok_local

Area: [Setting up and connecting](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.md)

**Definition.** Whether user-supplied providers work: bring-your-own-key, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, OpenRouter, and local servers such as Ollama or LM Studio.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Using an existing subscription across tools](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/billing.subscription_portability.md) for reusing a paid subscription. Not this: see rel.tool_call_errors for tool-format failures once connected.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 933. Complaint share: 48%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi is the best coding agent for using your own keys and local models. Its users describe local models running inside it with little overhead, and it is the only ranked agent rated better than the category norm here. OpenAI Codex, Claude Code and Cline also rank high. Users rate this less often than most topics: it makes up 1.1% of what users of coding agents rate, 42nd of 63 criteria. Cursor ranks last, 9th of 9. Cursor and Google Antigravity are both rated worse than the norm, and GitHub Copilot also ranks low.

### What separates the best from the rest

What separates the two groups is whether the option exists and works. Users of Pi, Cline and OpenAI Codex say they plug in a local model or a DeepSeek key and it runs. Users of the agents that rank low describe an option that is missing or broken. They say the Antigravity IDE cannot run a local model, Cursor no longer lets them use local models, and bring-your-own-key in Copilot never worked for them. Pi has 54 praise to 21 complaint; Cursor has 26 praise to 57 complaint.

  - Cline, 2026-09-15, @cline (X): “@cline just downloaded and plugged in deepseek. works great. how about a right panel with a browser like codex or zcode? or is that not built in yet? @cline” [source](https://twitter.com/1885730256432324608/status/2099935916219613455)

  - Cursor, 2026-10-14, @cursor_ai (X): “@uixmat @cursor_ai its inferior unfortunately. i had active subscriptions on cursor, claude and codex but dropped cursor a while ago when it failed to connect to deepseek api. that was the last drop for me.” [source](https://twitter.com/1701469498887294976/status/2110258515877240888)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The most common complaint is that a product offers no way to add other providers or local models at all. That is 27% of complaints. Cursor users write 22% of these and Google Antigravity users 19%. The next is a valid custom endpoint that fails to connect, at 20%. OpenCode users write 37% of those. OpenCode also leads complaints about proxy workarounds, local models that perform badly, and custom models that get dropped or replaced.

456 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party providers or local models not offered | 125 | 131 | Cursor 27, Google Antigravity 24, Claude Code 14, OpenAI Codex 13, Amp 9, OpenCode 9, Devin 7, Zed 6, Factory 5, Pi 4, Conductor 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Kiro 1 | The product has no option at all for user-supplied keys, custom endpoints, other vendors' models or local servers, or limits them to its own vendor's models or subscription; cases where the option exists but fails are out. |
| Configured custom endpoint fails to connect | 91 | 92 | OpenCode 34, OpenAI Codex 10, Cursor 8, Amp 7, Pi 7, Zed 6, Cline 5, GitHub Copilot 5, Claude Code 3, Warp 3, Google Antigravity 2, Factory 1 | The user enters a valid key, base URL or local server (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, OpenRouter) and the agent rejects it, gives auth, quota or 'no models' errors, or won't save it, even though the same endpoint works elsewhere; poor model quality once connected is out. |
| Local models degrade inside the agent harness | 52 | 56 | OpenCode 18, OpenAI Codex 14, Claude Code 5, Pi 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Google Antigravity 2, Cline 2, Zed 2, Cursor 1, Factory 1 | Local or non-native models connect but perform badly in the agent: broken tool calls, stalls, tiny context windows, hallucinations, or worse results than in the model's native harness; failures to connect at all are out. |
| API format mismatch requires proxy workaround | 51 | 58 | OpenCode 20, OpenAI Codex 12, Claude Code 5, Cursor 5, Amp 3, Google Antigravity 2, Cline 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Factory 1 | The agent speaks a different protocol or schema than the provider expects (chat completions vs responses, generateContent, custom headers, model registry name blocks), so users have to build relays, proxies or patches; providers that are simply not offered are out. |
| Bring-your-own-key models lose product features | 45 | 46 | OpenAI Codex 13, Claude Code 8, Cursor 8, Factory 4, Google Antigravity 2, GitHub Copilot 2, OpenCode 2, Warp 2, Cline 1, Conductor 1, Devin 1, Zed 1 | Once connected, user-supplied or local models are locked out of agent or plan mode, missions, autocomplete, computer use, plugins, reasoning-effort settings or other features that work only with the vendor's own models or login. |
| Agent overrides or drops selected custom model | 39 | 40 | OpenCode 16, OpenAI Codex 7, Google Antigravity 3, Amp 2, GitHub Copilot 2, Cursor 2, Pi 2, Warp 2, Claude Code 1, Cline 1, Factory 1 | Custom models or providers that were set up disappear, get merged, can't be edited, or are quietly replaced by billed vendor models or credit gates, even though the user chose a custom endpoint. |
| Missing documentation for custom provider setup | 20 | 23 | OpenCode 9, Pi 4, OpenAI Codex 3, Claude Code 1, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Factory 1 | Users can't work out how to configure keys, endpoints or local models because docs, setting locations or notices about breaking changes are missing or hard to find; setups that are documented but still fail are out. |
| Other | 46 | 46 | OpenCode 13, Claude Code 10, Cursor 7, OpenAI Codex 5, Amp 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Google Antigravity 2, Conductor 1, Devin 1, Warp 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Local models degrade inside the agent harness

- Pi, 2026-10-07, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “one big caveat in using unsloth with pi. the sampling did not get transfer over to pi and the pi session usually will have a cap of 8k context max limit as default, you will need to edit the temp config.json to get higher max context.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wxi27x/loggin_to_unsloth/pejdh0h/)

#### API format mismatch requires proxy workaround

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, r/opencode (Reddit): “what claude code got that makes it better than opencode? last time i checked it was a pretty mid harness that's extremely tricky to get other models working inside of” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x7iqzv/is_opencode_v2_quietly_becoming_the_better/ph4os41/)

[link]” [source](https://twitter.com/8208762/status/2107831401345122320)

#### Bring-your-own-key models lose product features

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “greetings! i'd like to ask to add functionality for agy to work with an api key. it is actually in there already, but for some reason it doesn't support argon natively as well as if you do enable it, it doesn't use implemented skills.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x6w3op/agy_api_key/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-08, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “cc caps the context window for non—antrophic api. did you fix that?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1w7zn8y/i_benchmarked_pi_against_claude_code_with_the/pekspe6/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-07, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “all those companies make it purposefully difficult to even record your own usage. for example anthropic in claude code, if you use your own proxy server (like litellm that saves prompts and responses) switch off remote control feature. why? to punish those that use it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1wymgu6/pewdiepie_getting_banned_twice_by_openai_while/pefpu1f/)

#### Agent overrides or drops selected custom model

- OpenCode, 2026-10-16, @opencode (X): “@opencode hey, can i give some feedback on the user experience? after i connected my openrouter account to opencode, it automatically enabled a bunch of models by default, but i only really use one or two of them. it’s a real hassle.” [source](https://twitter.com/1368497829551820802/status/2111083044161642836)

#### Missing documentation for custom provider setup

- OpenCode, 2026-10-18, @opencode (X): “@opencode for the opencode go security problem, i have to revoke my keys. then i spend 10mins to find out that the api key settings are in settings- service accounts- pick one-enter a page that add api key. i don’t care what the security problem is. just keep my api page back.” [source](https://twitter.com/1860280530035703808/status/2111709669689561229)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-12, r/opencode (Reddit): “i just can't find the api key, i bought the 10$ plan to try it, and yet i can't use it. perfect. the ui has no option for any sort of api keys” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wt0om0/new_console_frustation_where_is_the_apikey/pfdqajx/)
- Pi, 2026-09-23, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev please make initial setup easier for vllm/sglang/llama.cpp! writing models.json by hand is a pain and the /login path for llama.cpp doesn't seem to work for me (and i end up using nano for models.json like a pleb)” [source](https://twitter.com/50067714/status/2102622692637897183)

#### Other

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-16, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “what i have noticed is that copilot-cli does not support our proxy without setting up a local proxy of proxy or hardcoding use user and password in the http_proxy enc, which is not acceptable in our environment, especially for non technical people” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x6vbl0/vs_code_vs_vs_code_agents_gui_vs_github_copilot/ph1t5bq/)
- Cursor, 2026-09-21, @cursor_ai (X): “hey @bot i need your key pass through to work better @cursor_ai we need better auth tooling. you’re making a lot of people insecure and it’s not a tough fix. happy to help. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/195138772/status/2102100068484723015)
- OpenCode, 2026-09-17, r/opencode (Reddit): “i always find it hard to add/remove/manage providers and models. search is super slow and most of the times i have to restart the entire opencode to the models appear in the models dropdown. hopefully this will be fixed.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wiqokv/manage_models_ui_in_desktop_app_is_very_clunky/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 570 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Local model support

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-14, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity very strong model and they should be proud of the work. antigravity is behind but i think if they look at t3 as a gap and include some local models in their workflow i think they could do some really great things i know they already started support for local” [source](https://twitter.com/373800245/status/2110339625315393989)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@sigkitten running local llms inside of your wonderful codex app boss 🤝” [source](https://twitter.com/721018777664626688/status/2109005697484546228)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-08, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “oh man, i hope is the copilot ai can have options to switch to backend llama.cpp and exposed to all the mcp/tools provided by windows to control all the actions” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x079wc/llamacpp_on_the_stage/pejlh5i/)

### 2. Custom OpenAI-compatible provider endpoints

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/ClaudeAI (Reddit): “yea i’ll probably remake this idea and open source it when i get some time. being claude only is lame also. it should support claude, codex, and openai compatible endpoints. no way am i downloading a closed source mod the dev is so dodgy about.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1x3olix/i_made_a_free_minecraft_mod_where_claude_builds/pfdoeag/)
- Pi, 2026-10-02, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev is it possible to plug devin’s swe-2 into pi 1.0 (via custom routing / api)? would love to test it out as an implementation model alongside claude/gpt for planning. any guides or examples on this?” [source](https://twitter.com/4323327974/status/2106004282046914695)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-01, r/opencode (Reddit): “sent you a claim link. unfortunately freebuff doesn't work, because they do not have custom model endpoint support (as i saw, at least, from a quick search)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wut1la/i_made_a_0101_qwen_38_api_for_opencode_giving/pd8n0wx/)

### 3. Bring-your-own API key support

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity 3. increase the ability to freely configure sub-agent models. 4. develop byok capability, allowing users to freely connect to other models. 5. add functionality for prompts to optimize user input prompts.” [source](https://twitter.com/1553297981134147584/status/2111784771361948134)

### 4. Run agent locally instead of cloud

- Cursor, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “the business will be to use @cursor_ai to create a local agent that does what i need without requiring credits. probably some clone of @bot.” [source](https://twitter.com/162969818/status/2109036656967770459)
- Pi, 2026-10-04, @pidotdev (X): “@badlogicgames @badlogicgames @pidotdev @mitsuhiko : basically what openclaw does with their now released android app. you can always add fully local execution later for the 1% users.” [source](https://twitter.com/1274825376640970753/status/2106635993470382588)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-02, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs can you add an option to run projects fully local?” [source](https://twitter.com/1332447750/status/2105998446771769700)

### 5. Secure credential and secret storage

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “have it use a credential manager, where it can access but not print the keys.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x07or9/opus_55_sucks_do_not_migrate_to_claude/pep8bga/)

- Amp, 2026-09-26, @AmpCode (X): “.@sqs @ampcode another fun feature request; per-session secrets. sometimes i want to give an orb access to an external service, and i want to only give it access for one thread/session. extra cool if sub-threads could inherit said secrets:)” [source](https://twitter.com/1729720291/status/2103980940653715675)

### 6. Capable local models for consumer hardware

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-03, r/codex (Reddit): “if we can manage to get astra / opus 5.5 level intelligence on a local model running on a 5090 i'd be thrilled. i will still want more intelligence, but that will a major change. we need "good enough" alternatives so these companies cant gut us.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wwf1pm/27b_tokens_12_usage_used/pdkf8gf/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-27, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i agree, i'm a software engineer and all i want is cheap models i can run locally - the technology is already good enough to change my entire career.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wrpq38/any_idea_what_anthropic_figured_out/pcgafb6/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-18, r/codex (Reddit): “i sincerely hope that we can finally have some really good models that can run locally. it's a disaster to pay so much and on top of that, we are being treated poorly.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wj6tl0/in_case_youre_wondering_this_is_what_100_plan/paixt87/)

### 7. OpenRouter integration

- Amp, 2026-10-13, @AmpCode (X): “@vanamerongen @ampcode been looking at this for some time now. only thing holding me back is that i can't seem to use models from fireworks and/or openrouter. currently i'm on opencode.” [source](https://twitter.com/1259457132/status/2109991090074128893)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity allow us to integrate local llms/openrouter directly to the agent” [source](https://twitter.com/1694534354850951168/status/2107445627210616988)
- Cursor, 2026-10-02, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai this is actually disgusting. glm 5.3 flash is 50% off 0.25 on openrouter. it is far worse than luna at 0.50. at this point, might as well support openrouter models to get access to all openai gpt-6.1. it is not like you don't take a cut already.” [source](https://twitter.com/2082257621642571776/status/2105988552370634846)

### 8. BYOK without paid plan or credit gating

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux another one to consider would be that dot spawned chats even on local don’t respect config file, defaulting to ask for approval and failing to use custom model_provider. and codex app doesnt allow sending when out of usage even when using custom model_provider” [source](https://twitter.com/1510548279913693188/status/2110751132914266521)

(which left broken dependencies, i had to manually remove). worst ai dev ide.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x1xrw0/cursor_going_downhill/pezjq5y/)
- Amp, 2026-09-28, @AmpCode (X): “@sqs i would love if @ampcode could use the amp-provided inference first, then fall back to byok. use case: we gave a pm the $20 plan. he may occasionally exceed it, but not enough to justify the $200 plan. we’d like overflow to route to anthropic since we have credits there.” [source](https://twitter.com/1567548474794835969/status/2104601493374750970)

### 9. Use Claude Code or Codex CLI as backend

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “codex router? i'm thinking of plugging my chatgpt sub into opencode. or is there something which integrates third party models into codex? - Amp, 2026-10-05, @AmpCode (X): “@ampcode hope external agents (claude code cli) are on the way to prime time. pretty essential piece for those of us who want to use claude's subscription. i'd love to see the rough edges improve :)” [source](https://twitter.com/15281463/status/2107105270086160575)

### 10. Full feature parity for BYOK models

- OpenCode, 2026-09-20, r/opencode (Reddit): “can't generate api keys from muse ai tho, i'd rather keep giving mah maney to opencode go or any other provider for the contributor one and keep getting my personal info zucced” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wl8m6y/free_1_billion_muse_spark_13_tokens/paxf0lz/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

- Complaint, 2026-09-26, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity cool, but why sdk only? why not in the legacy ide or the agy app? because if i want to run local, i have to use another source just to complicate things more.” [source](https://twitter.com/3468547097/status/2103652125939261730)

### Devin

- Praise, 2026-10-02, @cognition (X): “devin got up to 40% more cost-efficient, and i've plugged my own openai subscription in. early access to devin mobile (iphone beta) means i can build away from my macbook. always on call. @cognition these guys are cooking. 🔥 cost per task is the number to watch. know yours? - Complaint, 2026-10-08, @DevinAI (X): “if @devinai make ui like @t3dotcodes desktop, will be unbeliveble. and if i can conect my claude and codex cli, will be imbatible. dont force me to use swe / your api models in cloud. it kill me. you can do de the best harness model agnostic. you have the cloud, why i cant conect my cli on youcloud, and use my accounts? i will like it. @devindevelopers @dabit3” [source](https://twitter.com/351635936/status/2108238240951968001)

- Complaint, 2026-09-18, @warpdotdev (X): “@vikvang1 @warpdotdev 3. let the client talk to a local endpoint. i don't want my ollama on the internet but a custom endpoint has to be public for your harness to talk to it. client-side (or at least lan-reachable) would unlock a lot.” [source](https://twitter.com/14132756/status/2100994815861383422)
- Complaint, 2026-10-01, @warpdotdev (X): “@warpdotdev plz fix the agent issue. even after having x premium credits/ custom endpoint openrouter credits , i cant use them. the model selector is broken, it uses warp only and just gives credit limit reached(ofcourse it would, i have no warp credits). just a bug? or a deliberate attempt?” [source](https://twitter.com/1983550879262494720/status/2105554429655282073)
