# Onboarding, discoverability and documentation (`setup.onboarding_docs`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/setup.onboarding_docs

Area: [Setting up and connecting](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.md)

**Definition.** How easily a new user learns the product: quick-start guides, docs explaining features and modes, and how findable features are.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Pricing and plan terms stated clearly and consistently](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/billing.pricing_clarity.md) for pricing docs. Not this: see ui.customization for settings complexity.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 582. Complaint share: 79%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi and Amp are the easiest coding agents to learn, and both rank high. Users say Pi is usable from the first day and shows them how to change its own configuration when asked. They say Amp's onboarding and setup work without a hitch. Users rate this less often than most criteria: it is the 51st most rated of 63. When they do rate it, 79.4% of rated user-weeks are complaints. OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity rank low. Codex users describe an app with many modes and updates that ship without release notes. Codex accounts for 25% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the agents that rank high describe getting to work quickly. Pi users say the agent shows them how to edit its own settings. Amp users say it guided them through setup across their whole stack. Users of the agents that rank low describe getting lost. OpenAI Codex users say they cannot tell its modes apart or find newly announced options. Google Antigravity users say the docs are out of date or leave out settings, and that they cannot follow the workspace layout. Antigravity has 4 praise to 38 complaints.

  - Pi, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i moved away from claude code's bloat to pi.dev at work several, checks calendar, months ago. so you can use it for real life work. it will probably be better if you tinker with it but it's very usable from day 1.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1ww2ocw/pi_for_serious_coding_work_or_more_tinkering_fun/pdirugm/)
  - Amp, 2026-09-19, @AmpCode (X): “played around with @ampcode this morning and wow. the attention to detail is incredible. it onboarded across my entire stack without a hitch and guided me through every setup. it feels like devin but cheaper, faster and far more configurable. the future is exciting.” [source](https://twitter.com/2016294660658941952/status/2101363588648550852)

  - OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-07, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “i don't consider myself dumb or unengaged but i'm increasingly lost in codex app, its multiple regimes and where stuff even happens. wth does that even mean? ## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a steep first run, with bare defaults, many config concepts and no guided start. It accounts for 23% of complaining user-weeks and is spread across Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and Cursor. Missing or unclear docs follow at 22%. OpenAI Codex has the largest share of complaints about overlapping, confusingly named product surfaces, at 39%. OpenCode has the largest share of complaints about docs that lag behind the shipped version, at 35%.

465 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steep first-run setup and learning curve | 108 | 110 | Claude Code 29, OpenAI Codex 25, Cursor 10, Pi 9, Amp 8, OpenCode 7, Google Antigravity 6, Zed 6, Devin 3, Factory 3, Conductor 1, Kiro 1 | New or switching users struggle to get going because of bare-bones defaults, a pile of config concepts (skills, hooks, plugins, extension systems), scattered config files or manual setup steps with no guided onboarding; confusion over naming between product surfaces is excluded. |
| Documentation missing, unclear or incomplete | 101 | 103 | Claude Code 25, OpenAI Codex 16, OpenCode 15, Pi 10, Google Antigravity 7, Zed 7, Cursor 6, Amp 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Factory 3, Cline 2, Devin 2, Warp 1 | Official docs, READMEs or tutorials don't explain a feature, setup step, permission mode, cost behaviour or configuration, or explain it so vaguely that users can't act on it; docs that were once correct but are now out of sync with the shipped version are excluded. |
| Features hidden or hard to locate | 80 | 81 | OpenAI Codex 22, OpenCode 16, Claude Code 11, Cursor 8, Zed 6, Google Antigravity 5, Devin 3, Factory 3, Pi 3, Amp 2, Cline 1 | A capability exists but users can't find its entry point, setting, command or button in the UI (including command palette misses and staged rollouts that make announced features invisible); conceptual confusion between product surfaces is not included. |
| Overlapping product surfaces with confusing naming | 66 | 69 | OpenAI Codex 26, Claude Code 18, Cursor 7, Amp 5, Google Antigravity 4, Devin 2, OpenCode 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Kiro 1 | Users can't tell apart multiple apps, tabs, modes or concepts that overlap or share names (e.g. chat vs work vs app, two different 'projects', sessions vs chats); this does not cover single hidden features or missing docs. |
| Silent updates without changelog or announcement | 30 | 31 | OpenAI Codex 10, Google Antigravity 7, OpenCode 5, Claude Code 4, Amp 2, Cursor 2 | New features, model releases, breaking changes or migrations ship without release notes, in-app what's-new summaries or notices, so users miss them or get caught out; this does not cover features that were announced but are simply hard to find. |
| Docs out of sync with shipped version | 26 | 26 | OpenCode 9, Claude Code 8, Google Antigravity 5, OpenAI Codex 2, Cursor 1, Pi 1 | Documentation describes behaviour, options or metadata that differ from the installed release, lags behind breaking changes, or is inconsistent between doc versions; docs that never covered the topic at all are excluded. |
| Agent cannot explain its own product | 9 | 10 | OpenAI Codex 4, Cursor 2, Google Antigravity 1, Claude Code 1, OpenCode 1 | The built-in assistant or support bot doesn't know, or gives wrong information about, the product's own features, plans, settings or commands when users ask it; this does not cover gaps in the static documentation itself. |
| Other | 51 | 52 | OpenAI Codex 11, Claude Code 8, Google Antigravity 4, Cursor 4, Devin 4, Augment Code 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Kiro 3, OpenCode 3, Amp 2, Cline 2, Pi 2, Warp 1, Zed 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-24, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “codex cli is the worst experience a developer can have. the company that has the most money for ai to make such a horrible app. the user experience is terrible. furthermore, when i consult through the chat, it does not have access to its own documentation. ## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 511 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 4. Reproducible transparent benchmarks

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs a side-by-side review of the same pr in all three modes would help a lot. show what quick misses, what deep catches, and the extra time and cost. much easier to choose a default with that in front of you.” [source](https://twitter.com/2060554585643843585/status/2110949746508763220)

- Warp, 2026-10-13, @warpdotdev (X): “@sentry @warpdotdev @bholmesdev @sergical a useful take-home would be the demo repo at a fixed commit plus the steps to reproduce the issue. that would let attendees repeat the sentry-to-warp workflow after the live session and pinpoint where they get stuck.” [source](https://twitter.com/1985039850064818176/status/2110082896526782660)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-05, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “can you give us a few use-cases (real world stuff) for this please? because as far as i can see it has none. is this like orca? velaterm? agentsroom and all the others?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wycbbr/i_built_a_terminal_where_you_can_watch_claude/pe1ure8/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-01, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs the highest-leverage addition would be runnable “golden tasks” beside each guide: input fixture → exact command/prompt → expected diff/tests. that turns a clever claude code trick into something teams can safely copy and review.” [source](https://twitter.com/1582348100945018882/status/2105489484200731048)

### 9. Wider access to projects feature

### 10. Less feature bloat, focus on core coding

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, r/codex (Reddit): “they should return more simple codex app or made new one. new superapp is very bad. thankfully, we still have codex cli and chatgpt classic, but i suspect they will stop supporting classic version in future 😢” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x2mfv4/chatgptcodex_mac_app_crashing_and_using_excessive/pf47ip9/)
- Pi, 2026-10-08, @pidotdev (X): “systemone? 👀 i've just built an extension for that... i hope @pidotdev won't evolve to be another runtime with an "everything harness" please... [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1669177150262628352/status/2108037010724438038)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@ajambrosino performance and remove all bloat. if possible a codex app and more coding related features. stop dumbing down your products.” [source](https://twitter.com/1684529867311009795/status/2107135556027314569)

### 11. Better project and repo management

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, r/codex (Reddit): “yeah it’s good, but it’s definitely got some spots i wish they’d improve (let me split convos, or make dedicated project dots)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x209ei/tried_dot_for_1_week_and_it_won_me/peymh2n/)

- Amp, 2026-10-02, @AmpCode (X): “@ampcode hey, any plans for better projects? i had to fit our many microservices into like 5 projects by scope, now i don't exactly know what is where, so sometimes i need to check the settings. and i don't need everything cloned every time - maybe something dynamic?” [source](https://twitter.com/44927319/status/2105954693004587034)

### 12. Share prompts and workflows from posts

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “hey can we have the full workflow please that look so good i wana do the same” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x40em0/didnt_knew_i_could_edit_videos_with_astra_made/pfi1kqr/)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-14, r/codex (Reddit): “why are they recording videos and not sharing the link to the examples like chatgpt lets us do? that would have much more legitimacy than this.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wg3odg/openai_is_silently_degrading_some_astra_codex/p9suw56/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-09-20, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i've been asking pi to configure itself every few updates and it's great at this. even runs a small benchmark on local models before adding them to give me more info. bottom line: pi is great at configuring itself. ask it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wlebgj/latest_pi_version_86_broke_working_with_local/pb0w3l0/)
