# Setting up and connecting (`setup`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/setup

Area of 5 criteria. How hard is it to install and connect?

Criteria: [Install, launch and sign-in](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.install_signin.md), [Connecting own API keys, local models and custom endpoints](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.provider_byok_local.md), [MCP servers, plugins, skills and hooks](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.extensions_mcp.md), [Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md), [IDE and editor integration](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.ide_integration.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 5835. Complaint share: 61%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi and Claude Code lead on setup, but neither leads on every criterion. Pi ranks 1st of 12 and ranks high on four of the five criteria. IDE integration is the exception; there Claude Code and Cursor rank high. Claude Code ranks high on every criterion except ease of learning, where Pi and Amp rank high. Google Antigravity ranks 12th of 12 and ranks low on all five criteria. OpenAI Codex ranks 11th. It ranks low on plugins, IDE integration and learning, but ranks high on install and sign-in and on own keys and local models.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

Posts most often describe a sign-in that never completes, in 256 user-weeks. OpenAI Codex accounts for 31% of those, ahead of Google Antigravity and Cursor. Next, users say integrations are too hard to set up; Claude Code, Google Antigravity and Pi draw the most of these. Third come installers that fail or apps that will not launch. OpenAI Codex accounts for 43% of those, and for 52% of complaints about updates that fail or never arrive.

### [Install, launch and sign-in](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.install_signin.md)

1214 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sign-in flow never completes | 256 | 279 | OpenAI Codex 80, Google Antigravity 46, Cursor 35, OpenCode 28, Claude Code 19, Amp 12, Cline 12, Pi 12, GitHub Copilot 3, Devin 3, Factory 2, Conductor 1, Kiro 1, Warp 1, Zed 1 | The login attempt fails, loops or hangs: a browser or OAuth redirect succeeds but the app never picks it up, the login button does nothing, device-auth or a new auth method returns 401/403 errors, or remote/SSH logins cannot open the URL; this excludes sessions that worked and later expired, and blocks from identity or phone verification. |
| Installer fails or app won't launch | 176 | 195 | OpenAI Codex 76, OpenCode 29, Google Antigravity 28, Claude Code 11, Cline 11, Pi 8, Cursor 6, Amp 3, Zed 2, Devin 1, Factory 1 | A fresh install or first start fails: packaging or service errors on Windows, missing admin rights, antivirus flags, a misleading package name, or an app that crashes, hangs on connecting or starts itself without consent; this excludes platforms the vendor does not support at all. |
| Updates fail or never arrive | 132 | 145 | OpenAI Codex 69, Google Antigravity 22, Claude Code 16, OpenCode 10, Cursor 7, Pi 6, Amp 1, Warp 1 | The built-in updater or package channel does nothing or fails: the check-for-updates button is dead, the apt repo is stale, the upgrade command errors, there is no progress shown, old versions are left on disk, or new features and models only appear after a manual reinstall; this excludes a first install that fails. |

### [Connecting own API keys, local models and custom endpoints](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.provider_byok_local.md)

456 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party providers or local models not offered | 125 | 131 | Cursor 27, Google Antigravity 24, Claude Code 14, OpenAI Codex 13, Amp 9, OpenCode 9, Devin 7, Zed 6, Factory 5, Pi 4, Conductor 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Kiro 1 | The product has no option at all for user-supplied keys, custom endpoints, other vendors' models or local servers, or limits them to its own vendor's models or subscription; cases where the option exists but fails are out. |
| Configured custom endpoint fails to connect | 91 | 92 | OpenCode 34, OpenAI Codex 10, Cursor 8, Amp 7, Pi 7, Zed 6, Cline 5, GitHub Copilot 5, Claude Code 3, Warp 3, Google Antigravity 2, Factory 1 | The user enters a valid key, base URL or local server (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, OpenRouter) and the agent rejects it, gives auth, quota or 'no models' errors, or won't save it, even though the same endpoint works elsewhere; poor model quality once connected is out. |
| Local models degrade inside the agent harness | 52 | 56 | OpenCode 18, OpenAI Codex 14, Claude Code 5, Pi 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Google Antigravity 2, Cline 2, Zed 2, Cursor 1, Factory 1 | Local or non-native models connect but perform badly in the agent: broken tool calls, stalls, tiny context windows, hallucinations, or worse results than in the model's native harness; failures to connect at all are out. |

### [MCP servers, plugins, skills and hooks](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.extensions_mcp.md)

1028 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Integration setup and management too hard | 220 | 227 | Claude Code 41, Google Antigravity 36, Pi 27, OpenAI Codex 23, Cursor 23, Zed 21, OpenCode 17, GitHub Copilot 10, Amp 7, Cline 6, Devin 4, Factory 3, Conductor 1, Warp 1 | Common integrations are missing from the store or have no built-in option, the MCP/plugin settings are hidden or clumsy, there is no per-session or per-directory way to turn them on or off, and plugin review or approval stalls; connections that authenticate but then fail at runtime are out. |
| Extensions not shared across surfaces or versions | 167 | 179 | Claude Code 37, OpenAI Codex 34, OpenCode 26, Google Antigravity 16, Pi 13, Cursor 12, GitHub Copilot 10, Zed 6, Kiro 3, Amp 2, Cline 2, Conductor 2, Devin 2, Factory 1, Warp 1 | Skills, plugins, MCP configs or custom agents that work in one place (CLI, desktop, subagents, a cloud agent, another harness, or the previous release) fail to load or disappear in another, including skill folder paths that are ignored or not shared; extensions that load but behave badly are out. |
| Third-party extension crashes or destabilizes the agent | 147 | 155 | OpenAI Codex 40, Claude Code 31, OpenCode 25, Pi 21, Google Antigravity 13, Cursor 5, Zed 4, Amp 3, Factory 3, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1 | A plugin, MCP server or extension hangs the agent, breaks a model with bad schemas, spawns runaway processes or windows, or fails again and again in ways that take down core work; bugs inside the extension's own feature that leave the agent itself running are out. |

### [Onboarding, discoverability and documentation](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.onboarding_docs.md)

465 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steep first-run setup and learning curve | 108 | 110 | Claude Code 29, OpenAI Codex 25, Cursor 10, Pi 9, Amp 8, OpenCode 7, Google Antigravity 6, Zed 6, Devin 3, Factory 3, Conductor 1, Kiro 1 | New or switching users struggle to get going because of bare-bones defaults, a pile of config concepts (skills, hooks, plugins, extension systems), scattered config files or manual setup steps with no guided onboarding; confusion over naming between product surfaces is excluded. |
| Documentation missing, unclear or incomplete | 101 | 103 | Claude Code 25, OpenAI Codex 16, OpenCode 15, Pi 10, Google Antigravity 7, Zed 7, Cursor 6, Amp 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Factory 3, Cline 2, Devin 2, Warp 1 | Official docs, READMEs or tutorials don't explain a feature, setup step, permission mode, cost behaviour or configuration, or explain it so vaguely that users can't act on it; docs that were once correct but are now out of sync with the shipped version are excluded. |
| Features hidden or hard to locate | 80 | 81 | OpenAI Codex 22, OpenCode 16, Claude Code 11, Cursor 8, Zed 6, Google Antigravity 5, Devin 3, Factory 3, Pi 3, Amp 2, Cline 1 | A capability exists but users can't find its entry point, setting, command or button in the UI (including command palette misses and staged rollouts that make announced features invisible); conceptual confusion between product surfaces is not included. |

### [IDE and editor integration](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.ide_integration.md)

549 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Editor extension lags standalone app features | 145 | 151 | OpenAI Codex 49, Google Antigravity 37, Claude Code 35, GitHub Copilot 5, Cursor 5, Amp 4, Zed 3, Devin 2, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | The agent's IDE extension or plugin is missing capabilities that its CLI, desktop app or standalone IDE already have, such as MCP connectors, browser or computer use, slash commands, plan workflows, newer models or the current harness version; bugs in features that do exist belong elsewhere. |
| AI-first editor lacks basic editing features | 76 | 79 | Zed 38, Google Antigravity 19, Cursor 8, OpenAI Codex 4, Kiro 3, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | An AI-centric editor or VS Code fork is missing or botches conventional IDE basics such as LSP analysis, go-to-definition, debugger behaviour, syntax highlighting, run buttons, file trees, git change markers, language support or project switching; complaints about the agent's own features are out. |
| Extension crashes, hangs or corrupts editor state | 63 | 67 | OpenAI Codex 26, Google Antigravity 15, Claude Code 6, GitHub Copilot 5, Cursor 5, Cline 3, Devin 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1 | An installed agent extension that should work fails at runtime: its UI won't start, prompts get stuck in a queue, error panels appear, git index errors or race conditions show up, or it breaks under remote SSH or codespaces, while the same agent works fine in the terminal or desktop app; features that were never built are out. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 3398 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Multi-account switching

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “it would be very good if from the claude code app you could easily switch between subscriptions. now it's a mess to log out, open another one, etc... @claudedevs @claudeai” [source](https://twitter.com/326410994/status/2110801186349777147)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “we need multi-account support in the claude desktop app. please make it happen @claudeai @claudedevs @trq212 @bcherny 🙏 bonus ask: yubico support, but first multi-account. thx in advance. 😄” [source](https://twitter.com/1320052694808223745/status/2110793317109649763)
- Amp, 2026-10-15, @AmpCode (X): “if @ampcode supported multiple accounts for each sub-provider, i would ditch it for everything else. it's such a great product, and orbs are very transparently implemented - i never really have to care about them. but currently having to login/logout is a pain. t3code nails it” [source](https://twitter.com/165356795/status/2110628837541474610)

### 3. Local model support

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-14, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity very strong model and they should be proud of the work. antigravity is behind but i think if they look at t3 as a gap and include some local models in their workflow i think they could do some really great things i know they already started support for local” [source](https://twitter.com/373800245/status/2110339625315393989)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@sigkitten running local llms inside of your wonderful codex app boss 🤝” [source](https://twitter.com/721018777664626688/status/2109005697484546228)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-08, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “oh man, i hope is the copilot ai can have options to switch to backend llama.cpp and exposed to all the mcp/tools provided by windows to control all the actions” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x079wc/llamacpp_on_the_stage/pejlh5i/)

### 4. Custom OpenAI-compatible provider endpoints

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/ClaudeAI (Reddit): “yea i’ll probably remake this idea and open source it when i get some time. being claude only is lame also. it should support claude, codex, and openai compatible endpoints. no way am i downloading a closed source mod the dev is so dodgy about.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1x3olix/i_made_a_free_minecraft_mod_where_claude_builds/pfdoeag/)
- Pi, 2026-10-02, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev is it possible to plug devin’s swe-2 into pi 1.0 (via custom routing / api)? would love to test it out as an implementation model alongside claude/gpt for planning. any guides or examples on this?” [source](https://twitter.com/4323327974/status/2106004282046914695)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-01, r/opencode (Reddit): “sent you a claim link. unfortunately freebuff doesn't work, because they do not have custom model endpoint support (as i saw, at least, from a quick search)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wut1la/i_made_a_0101_qwen_38_api_for_opencode_giving/pd8n0wx/)

- Conductor, 2026-10-09, r/conductorbuild (Reddit): “\+1 ... this would be an absolute game changer. i constantly have to switch between windows (work) and macos (personal). conductor on both platforms in combination with the pro plan and conductor cloud would be a banger.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/conductorbuild/comments/1x13gv6/when_are_we_getting_a_windows_version_ballpark/pet4pg1/)

### 6. Open source the product

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@_mohansolo @antigravity agy doesn't seem to have ctrl+r history search? and i can't send a pr because it's not open source? wtf folks 😭” [source](https://twitter.com/1853296525373546496/status/2111635455406198848)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “its cool. would be great if you could open source it. just add the source to the paid app. i'll buy it. i would port it to linux.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3fp16/i_used_codex_to_build_an_entire_2d3d_animation/pfe26sy/)

### 7. Opt-in background daemon

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “#read oh no it turns out that codex cli installs a persistent and self-updating background daemon by default, and there is no official way to disable it - gigazine [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/872972330393247744/status/2110647600303268070)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “codex cli started installing a persistent, self-updating daemon by default. survives after you quit. devs want it opt-in. that's the right instinct. ai tools on your machine should be guests, not residents. who else is auditing what their coding agents leave running?” [source](https://twitter.com/118257688/status/2110123666021273997)

### 8. Bring-your-own API key support

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity 3. increase the ability to freely configure sub-agent models. 4. develop byok capability, allowing users to freely connect to other models. 5. add functionality for prompts to optimize user input prompts.” [source](https://twitter.com/1553297981134147584/status/2111784771361948134)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-17, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “still no changelog for this codex app update? it is insane to me that, when supply chain attacks have never been more common or easy, a company like oai is cutting releases without any official indication that an update went out anywhere else” [source](https://twitter.com/37238075/status/2111247421812670752)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@rodydavis @antigravity info about antigravity v2.24.0 today will be found where? would be nice to link to that in antigravity where the version is display along with the check for updates action” [source](https://twitter.com/2057943676437901312/status/2111156583883309324)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
