# IDE and editor integration (`setup.ide_integration`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/setup.ide_integration

Area: [Setting up and connecting](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.md)

**Definition.** How the agent works inside an editor or IDE, including extension support, editor-native features, autocomplete and feature parity across IDEs.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Reviewing and approving the agent's changes](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/verify.change_review_ui.md) for diff and approval views. Not this: see ui.terminal_display for CLI rendering.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1061. Complaint share: 51%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code and Cursor lead on IDE integration. Their users work inside an editor they already know. Claude Code runs as an extension that keeps their shortcuts and file tree, and Cursor offers tab completion and lets users highlight code to ask about it. The criterion takes 1.2% of what users rate and is the 34th most rated of 63 criteria. Google Antigravity, OpenAI Codex and Zed rank low. Google Antigravity is last of 7 and draws 28% of the category's complaints here. Zed users rate IDE integration 2.69 times as often as other users.

### What separates the best from the rest

The two groups describe different experiences of the editor. Users of Claude Code and Cursor say the agent fits into their editor, with completions, shortcuts and file previews where they expect them. Users of OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity say the editor extension trails the vendor's own app or IDE. Antigravity users also describe mixed messages about which one to use. Zed users describe an editor that lacks basics they had in VS Code, such as git change markers and windows for separate worktrees.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest complaint is an editor extension that lacks features the agent's app or CLI already has. It makes up 26% of complaining user-weeks. It is spread across OpenAI Codex, Google Antigravity and Claude Code. Two modes belong mostly to one agent. Zed accounts for 50% of complaints about an AI-first editor missing basic editing features. Google Antigravity accounts for 58% of complaints about a vendor's own IDE being neglected, heavy or slow.

549 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Editor extension lags standalone app features | 145 | 151 | OpenAI Codex 49, Google Antigravity 37, Claude Code 35, GitHub Copilot 5, Cursor 5, Amp 4, Zed 3, Devin 2, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | The agent's IDE extension or plugin is missing capabilities that its CLI, desktop app or standalone IDE already have, such as MCP connectors, browser or computer use, slash commands, plan workflows, newer models or the current harness version; bugs in features that do exist belong elsewhere. |
| AI-first editor lacks basic editing features | 76 | 79 | Zed 38, Google Antigravity 19, Cursor 8, OpenAI Codex 4, Kiro 3, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | An AI-centric editor or VS Code fork is missing or botches conventional IDE basics such as LSP analysis, go-to-definition, debugger behaviour, syntax highlighting, run buttons, file trees, git change markers, language support or project switching; complaints about the agent's own features are out. |
| Extension crashes, hangs or corrupts editor state | 63 | 67 | OpenAI Codex 26, Google Antigravity 15, Claude Code 6, GitHub Copilot 5, Cursor 5, Cline 3, Devin 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1 | An installed agent extension that should work fails at runtime: its UI won't start, prompts get stuck in a queue, error panels appear, git index errors or race conditions show up, or it breaks under remote SSH or codespaces, while the same agent works fine in the terminal or desktop app; features that were never built are out. |
| Preferred IDE unsupported or support dropped | 58 | 58 | Google Antigravity 17, OpenAI Codex 9, Cursor 7, OpenCode 6, GitHub Copilot 5, Devin 3, Kiro 3, Zed 3, Claude Code 2, Grok Build 2, Pi 1 | The user's chosen editor (JetBrains, Visual Studio, Xcode, Zed, Cursor and so on) has no working integration for the agent, or loses it through a rebrand, discontinued plugin, version lock or broken ACP bridge, which pushes the user to switch tools; partial feature gaps in a supported editor are out. |
| Vendor's own IDE neglected, heavy or slow | 52 | 56 | Google Antigravity 30, OpenAI Codex 6, Cursor 5, Claude Code 4, OpenCode 4, Cline 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | The vendor's standalone IDE or editor fork is abandoned or rarely updated, uses a lot of resources, starts slowly or has a cluttered layout, while development shifts to other surfaces and users are pushed off it; failures of third-party editor extensions are out. |
| No inline completions or in-editor diff review | 50 | 52 | Google Antigravity 12, OpenAI Codex 12, Cursor 9, Claude Code 5, Zed 5, GitHub Copilot 4, OpenCode 2, Amp 1 | The integration doesn't offer tab autocomplete, inline edits, line-by-line diff approval or clickable navigation to code the agent references, so users can't review and steer changes inside the editor; general missing IDE basics that have nothing to do with AI are out. |
| Editor environment conflicts with agent configuration | 40 | 40 | GitHub Copilot 8, OpenAI Codex 7, Claude Code 6, Cursor 6, Zed 5, OpenCode 4, Google Antigravity 3, Warp 1 | Editor-specific settings clash with the agent: keybindings that trigger AI features instead of the expected defaults, chats tied to workspaces whose paths aren't resolved consistently, per-editor config folders, or terminal and shell commands that fail inside the editor but run outside it; outright extension crashes are out. |
| Other | 73 | 73 | Google Antigravity 22, Claude Code 21, OpenAI Codex 18, Cursor 8, Augment Code 1, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1, Zed 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### AI-first editor lacks basic editing features

- Zed, 2026-10-17, @zeddotdev (X): “@code workspaces are such a great feature. it just make switching between repo very very easy. i wish every code editor must add it. @zeddotdev has projects but i still had to write script to make it work somewhat like vscode.” [source](https://twitter.com/1746242198331707392/status/2111483098609438908)

#### Preferred IDE unsupported or support dropped

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “that’s not the message i got when they rolled out the agent only ide-less version of “antigravity” and made us jump through hoops to get back to being able to use ide version” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1x70zvj/gemini_4_argon_is_officially_on_antigravity_but/ph12adk/)

#### No inline completions or in-editor diff review

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-03, r/codex (Reddit): “so often i'll get a response from sol/astra in the terminal of vs code and want to copy and paste it to either ask ask other llm or to just save it somewhere and i can't for the life of me do it. it seems like something like this should be very straight forward, no!?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wwidaf/is_there_any_way_to_copy_and_paste_text_from/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 559 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@clmt @antigravity @clmt why isn’t it on the antigravity ide?….it’s on only available in the antigravity app, which most of us don’t even use” [source](https://twitter.com/1571391721518276608/status/2111110695299518507)

### 12. Built-in debugger

- Zed, 2026-10-05, r/ZedEditor (Reddit): “debug must use the terminal tab instead of its own local terminal git features on git graph - checkout, stash, create, delete, rebase, simplified graph (branches only; not commits)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ZedEditor/comments/1wydtin/gimme_your_gripes/pe2hw09/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Devin

- Praise, 2026-09-16, r/windsurf (Reddit): “for me, the integration into the ide is crucial. i want to be anle to see my source file structure and open files in the editor. devin and antigravity does this. other tools give you a chatbox an ots like shooting in the dark because your code is not in front of you. perhaps i'm missing something.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/windsurf/comments/1whbowm/not_a_happy_camper/pa6epkm/)
- Praise, 2026-09-03, @cognition (X): “@niklaslenz_ai @lottolabs @da7_tech @cognition needed it for reworking my own custom mixed-precision quant! the interface's pretty sweet (similar to cursor/vsc) and the plan's plenty, imo.” [source](https://twitter.com/1492053555381174280/status/2095568626975990107)
- Praise, 2026-09-01, @cognition (X): “@embw_l0x @cognition @devindesktop try it you gonna love it, the harness is really good and you can use almost any model through the model picker not only claude and codex but a lot of other ones as well, its a very good system nice editor.” [source](https://twitter.com/2078757722363740160/status/2094900765303136693)

### Cline

- Praise, 2026-10-06, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “tough without chinese models. maybe nemotron series, they are decent, open, but they lag behind. you can have also glimmer and gemma. for harness cline worked well for me in vs code plugin. sometimes roo works better with some api (ollama)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1wzaqtt/best_openweight_coding_model_harness_for_an/pea1q69/)
- Praise, 2026-10-15, r/cursor (Reddit): “if you liked cursor gui too, then vscode is closest you can get to cursor. i went that way, as i already liked vs code before ai anyway :d oh and bonus, cline is on vscode as extension and it is pretty good. for cline app i did not try it, but saw posts, that it is not good yet, needs more time in the oven” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x6lnmw/the_next_one_with_the_same_kind_of_question/pgwb7c3/)

### Kiro

- Praise, 2026-09-13, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “why? im trying to move away from cursor and kiro (cli) within vscode seems fine so far, very similar how you would add cursor rules in a project or globally.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1wevx2a/my_frustrating_experience_with_kiro_aws/p9kozzw/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-30, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “that's great! where did you read about this unification? i've always complained to our amazon rep that it feels very much like kiro cli and kiro ide were built by two independent product teams who never talk to each other, and who aren't even allowed to send smoke signals to one another.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1wuazaz/kiro_just_dropped_multiagent_workflows_finally/pd2ajmk/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-24, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “cool! gonna try tomorrow. i prefer the vs lsp integration, debugger and interface. kiro only have the free debugger right now and somehow electron-like programs perform much worse then vs in my machine.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1wp53oc/i_added_native_kiro_support_to_visual_studio_2026/pbvamrb/)
- Complaint, 2026-09-04, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev your ide lacks basic features is a nonsense for a fork.. not going to comment on the credit usage in last 2 months. will be switching soon.” [source](https://twitter.com/2393611456/status/2095926199864221903)

### Amp

- Complaint, 2026-09-23, @AmpCode (X): “@sqs @ampcode trying it, i see it's basically the cli/tui in place of the original thread. i was already doing this within the orb's terminal lol but it would be great to have a proper integration for this” [source](https://twitter.com/2067222195064143872/status/2102763110209835405)

### Pi

- Complaint, 2026-09-26, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “fyi; pi-vim is broken: `~/.pig/agent/npm/node_modules/pi-vim/index.ts" error: settingsmanager.create is not a function`” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wqe2v1/meet_pig_the_pi_coding_harness_that_is_yours_but/pc6ynhk/)
