# MCP servers, plugins, skills and hooks (`setup.extensions_mcp`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/setup.extensions_mcp

Area: [Setting up and connecting](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.md)

**Definition.** Whether external tools and extension points load, authenticate and refresh correctly: MCP servers, plugins, skills, hooks and third-party integrations.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [IDE and editor integration](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.ide_integration.md) for editor extensions. Not this: see [Persistent project rules files are read and obeyed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.instruction_files.md) for rules files.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1989. Complaint share: 51%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi and Claude Code lead on getting outside tools and extensions to work. Their users describe building their own skills and extensions, and connecting services that then do the job. The criterion is the 15th most rated of 63 criteria. Pi users rate it 7.16 times as often as other users. Cursor, Zed, OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity rank low, and Google Antigravity is last. OpenAI Codex users write 21% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Pi and Claude Code users say they write their own extensions and skills and shape the harness to suit them. They also connect mail, calendars or a website, and those connections then work. Users of the low-ranked agents describe gaps and breakage. Zed users say the plugin ecosystem is thin. Google Antigravity users say MCP does not work properly. OpenAI Codex and Cursor users report plugins that stop working and integrations that will not sign in.

  - Pi, 2026-10-09, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “that's so true. i like how it let's one customize the harness to be exactly how they want it. unlike the other already prebuilt harnesses. i've even built myself a web gui extension that lets me spawn specialist agents to help with my 9-5 tickets and my own hobby side projects.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x1tqg5/pi_is_linuxvimcjsk8s_of_the_ai_harnesses_world/pewqzr9/)
  - Claude Code, 2026-10-16, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i have claude code connected to my gmail, calendar, and dropbox. it is my personal assistant. i just tell it what to do. i can’t remember the last time i was so caught up on everything. it’s insane.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x7897t/i_need_a_claude_bot/ph21bq2/)
- **Ranks low**: [Cursor](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/agents/cursor.md), [Zed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/agents/zed.md), [OpenAI Codex](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/agents/codex.md), [Google Antigravity](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/agents/antigravity.md)
  - Zed, 2026-09-25, @zeddotdev (X): “@spinflowstudio @theo @zeddotdev using it for some time now, but the plugin support is not really there yet. there is a lack of functionalities from the massive ecosystem of plugins vscode community has managed to create over the years” [source](https://twitter.com/1910279414304198656/status/2103302414673859067)
  - OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, r/codex (Reddit): “hi, similar type of situation. my codex chrome plugin just stopped working. seems that every time it opens in chrome this site is called ([link]) and cloudflare has blocked my ip for this site. strange, this has nothing to do with my project. any ideas?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x55jr6/installed_the_codexchatgpt_mac_client_and/pgx2yto/)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is integrations that are too hard to set up and manage. It covers 21% of complaining user-weeks and is spread across Claude Code, Google Antigravity and Pi. Two smaller modes lean toward one agent. OpenAI Codex has 40% of complaints about connected tools that quietly disappear or go stale. Claude Code has 37% of complaints that the agent ignores installed skills or picks the wrong tool.

1028 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Integration setup and management too hard | 220 | 227 | Claude Code 41, Google Antigravity 36, Pi 27, OpenAI Codex 23, Cursor 23, Zed 21, OpenCode 17, GitHub Copilot 10, Amp 7, Cline 6, Devin 4, Factory 3, Conductor 1, Warp 1 | Common integrations are missing from the store or have no built-in option, the MCP/plugin settings are hidden or clumsy, there is no per-session or per-directory way to turn them on or off, and plugin review or approval stalls; connections that authenticate but then fail at runtime are out. |
| Extensions not shared across surfaces or versions | 167 | 179 | Claude Code 37, OpenAI Codex 34, OpenCode 26, Google Antigravity 16, Pi 13, Cursor 12, GitHub Copilot 10, Zed 6, Kiro 3, Amp 2, Cline 2, Conductor 2, Devin 2, Factory 1, Warp 1 | Skills, plugins, MCP configs or custom agents that work in one place (CLI, desktop, subagents, a cloud agent, another harness, or the previous release) fail to load or disappear in another, including skill folder paths that are ignored or not shared; extensions that load but behave badly are out. |
| Third-party extension crashes or destabilizes the agent | 147 | 155 | OpenAI Codex 40, Claude Code 31, OpenCode 25, Pi 21, Google Antigravity 13, Cursor 5, Zed 4, Amp 3, Factory 3, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1 | A plugin, MCP server or extension hangs the agent, breaks a model with bad schemas, spawns runaway processes or windows, or fails again and again in ways that take down core work; bugs inside the extension's own feature that leave the agent itself running are out. |
| Installed extensions bloat context and token cost | 132 | 135 | Claude Code 45, Pi 30, OpenAI Codex 28, OpenCode 8, GitHub Copilot 6, Cursor 6, Google Antigravity 4, Amp 2, Zed 2, Factory 1 | Skills, plugins and MCP tools enabled by default or installed by the user fill every prompt with descriptions and schemas, waste tokens, or get their descriptions silently cut off; the agent choosing the wrong tool is out. |
| Integration authentication and permission scopes fail | 100 | 106 | Claude Code 26, OpenAI Codex 26, Cursor 20, Google Antigravity 11, Amp 6, OpenCode 4, GitHub Copilot 2, Devin 2, Factory 2, Cline 1 | Connectors or MCP servers cannot log in, are missing OAuth scopes, are blocked by allowlists or token guardrails, or need a local browser the setup cannot reach; general setup difficulty that has nothing to do with credentials is out. |
| Agent ignores or misroutes available skills and tools | 86 | 95 | Claude Code 32, OpenAI Codex 15, OpenCode 10, Google Antigravity 9, Cursor 8, Pi 7, GitHub Copilot 2, Amp 1, Cline 1, Zed 1 | The model never calls a relevant installed skill, picks the wrong MCP server or connector, keeps failing to call tools or code mode correctly, or tries many tools before finding the right one; tools that are missing from the session are out. |
| Connected tools silently vanish or go stale | 63 | 69 | OpenAI Codex 25, Claude Code 13, GitHub Copilot 5, Cursor 5, OpenCode 4, Pi 3, Amp 2, Google Antigravity 2, Factory 2, Cline 1, Zed 1 | MCP servers, plugins or hooks that were working stop showing up, fire late, or only pick up changes after a reload or app restart, with no error shown; servers that never connected at all are out. |
| Other | 145 | 152 | Claude Code 36, OpenAI Codex 27, Pi 24, OpenCode 13, Google Antigravity 12, Zed 11, GitHub Copilot 6, Cursor 6, Amp 4, Conductor 3, Devin 2, Kiro 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Integration setup and management too hard

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, @ClaudeDevs (X): “it feels pretty wild that @claudedevs does not have a personal outlook mail connector while muse and grokbot are going 🥜 claude recommended that i forward all outlook mails to gmail and connect gmail instead.” [source](https://twitter.com/94744222/status/2111195612343578844)
- Zed, 2026-10-13, @zeddotdev (X): “@jksully313 @zeddotdev its been a few months since i last tried so i don’t remember all the small anoyences, but a major issue is that vs code has a much better plugin ecosystem, which is hard for me to migrate away from” [source](https://twitter.com/1785442604173185024/status/2110055404504043604)
- Amp, 2026-10-13, @AmpCode (X): “@hameonline @openai @claudeai @cursor_ai @ampcode @poteto the grok bot integration with cursor is too goated, and trying to get it to work with amp threads is messy as there's no native plugin :(” [source](https://twitter.com/1788108425400123392/status/2109990234935251184)

#### Extensions not shared across surfaces or versions

- Pi, 2026-10-17, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “pi extensions are not the same thing as pi durable extensions. would be nice to use existing pi extensions but they aren’t compatible.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x806t8/pi_pocket_014_extension_api_themes_and_an/ph9o053/)

- OpenCode, 2026-10-11, r/opencode (Reddit): “the only thing i’d point though is some plugins are not ready for v2 yet, so if you rely on any of them it’s worth to double check first” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x2xzfg/opencode_2_vs_v1190/pf72x5a/)

#### Third-party extension crashes or destabilizes the agent

- OpenCode, 2026-10-16, @opencode (X): “@opencode - "json schema exceeds the maximum nesting depth of 10 levels" fix: i disabled mcps, and the issue is gone” [source](https://twitter.com/1553011876811907072/status/2110906298069843980)

#### Installed extensions bloat context and token cost

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “your agents aren't using your skills as much as you think. codex cli gives every installed skill one shared budget: 2% of the context window. with 175 installed, each description got cut to about 60 characters. how many skills do you have installed right now 😬? [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/3225610602/status/2108950438170997136)
- Pi, 2026-10-06, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “fully compatible, but if you just add a single pi extension it has to load node on startup, so it starts as slow as pi or even slower..” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wydpe0/now_that_everyone_is_making_harness_tierlists/pebntzv/)

#### Integration authentication and permission scopes fail

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, r/codex (Reddit): “hi, similar type of situation. my codex chrome plugin just stopped working. seems that every time it opens in chrome this site is called ([link]) and cloudflare has blocked my ip for this site. strange, this has nothing to do with my project. any ideas?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x55jr6/installed_the_codexchatgpt_mac_client_and/pgx2yto/)

#### Agent ignores or misroutes available skills and tools

- Cursor, 2026-10-03, @cursor_ai (X): “@kentcdodds @bot @cursor_ai that's a nasty gotcha. i've started testing agents against a canary tool just to verify they actually read the mcp instructions, because clearly you can't assume it” [source](https://twitter.com/1960245775344246784/status/2106420709572456937)

#### Connected tools silently vanish or go stale

- Claude Code, 2026-10-18, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@denrase @tweetsofsumit @claudedevs don’t get me started. one of our mcps is still stuck, since before summer.” [source](https://twitter.com/9240932/status/2111728104511012988)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 1046 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. General MCP server support

- Pi, 2026-10-11, @pidotdev (X): “@harshil1712 @pidotdev @cloudflaredev yeah that was a question i had, is it possible to connect a mcp to the pi durable harness?” [source](https://twitter.com/801745723947675648/status/2109318560036126966)
- Factory, 2026-10-10, @droid (X): “@droid very honest feedback after trying many harnesses, you provide usage really really good, 30mints of operation with gpt6.1sol only takes 18% of 5hrs limit. that’s something i was looking for. but the cli still needs polishing for using for local mcps, in my case.” [source](https://twitter.com/2995471962/status/2108776696145149971)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity better library for all mcps. better nano banana integration, make it free!” [source](https://twitter.com/107362073/status/2107518391586340968)

### 2. Plugin and extension system support

- Zed, 2026-10-17, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev i’d like a bigger binary with more features. thanks! it’d be awesome if we could do some proper extensions now.” [source](https://twitter.com/2060791492499611652/status/2111475745738387505)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@mxstbr ooc will codex cli support a plugin system like claude code does? would love to implement some kind of diffs view inline in the cli for a once-over on quick and dirty changes” [source](https://twitter.com/1734910428986343424/status/2107994968266813503)

### 3. Agent Client Protocol support

- Zed, 2026-10-16, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev great!! please, when is opencode v2.0 coming to acp registry” [source](https://twitter.com/1268137565993000961/status/2111126594999775360)
- Factory, 2026-10-09, @droid (X): “@thecoderbtw @droid @factoryai u can’t use it unless factory support acp mode..” [source](https://twitter.com/1518742213936570368/status/2108600792601223342)

### 4. Import skills from other agents

- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs come up with a way to import existing cursor project convos to claude projects. big winner. i can probably do myself through convos saved under .cursor. lets see which version is better” [source](https://twitter.com/343609718/status/2108681676691779971)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-03, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs when u work on the personal agent, pls don’t forget an easy way for users to import their data and self-designed harnesses from other personal agent apps like muse 🙏 migrating by hand would be brutal” [source](https://twitter.com/2088652042059599872/status/2106495766110105642)

### 5. Pre-tool hooks that block or mutate calls

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “codex cli hooks support compared to cursor is lacking.. codex hooks let things through if they fail. if a hook errors or times out, codex carries on anyway. also codex has nothing like cursor's file-read hook. maybe i should put some compute towards closing this gap” [source](https://twitter.com/1675622070862897152/status/2109077148153827590)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-02, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs nice. first thing i'd build is a mod that trims huge tool outputs before they hit the model. in our own harness that one change saved more tokens than any prompt tweak. can a mod rewrite a tool result, or only watch it?” [source](https://twitter.com/1634838827180212228/status/2105827185768697974)
- Pi, 2026-09-20, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “in general it shouldn't matter but what i always miss is the lack of observability (what has changed exactly) and ability to put hooks during the process (for example formatting or linting etc), that's why i very much prefer native tooling over bash” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wgoknm/would_you_prefer_agent_to_writeedit_using_bash/paxn817/)

### 6. Richer editor extension and UI API

- Zed, 2026-10-15, r/cursor (Reddit): “if zed just gets better extension support its game over. i still write enough of my own code i like my extensions and drift back and forth to vscode editors. otherwise zed is perfect” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x65v6o/great_time_for_competitors_to_step_in/pgt9t96/)
- Zed, 2026-10-14, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev can you add plugins though like actual plugins, extendible ui, etc.” [source](https://twitter.com/1884855692630093824/status/2110192849832866165)
- Zed, 2026-10-05, r/ZedEditor (Reddit): “i don't care for any of the ai features in zed or vscode, that's what my highly capable and configurable cli is for. what i do want is a capable text editor, for me the lack of extensions is holding me back from using zed.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ZedEditor/comments/1wydtin/gimme_your_gripes/pe41chu/)

### 7. Settings sync across devices

### 10. MCP as optional plugin, not core

- Pi, 2026-10-06, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “sadly now its adding mcp natively (not even disabled by default and with codemode that who knows which model is pre trained to use that) who knows what will be added tomorrow” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wydpe0/now_that_everyone_is_making_harness_tierlists/pe4zxlw/)

- Cursor, 2026-10-08, @cursor_ai (X): “@poteto @bot @cursor_ai different companies have different access control for apps and tools... sometimes grok bot is not on the approved list. it'd be nice to be able to manage chief of staff and other bots in cursor.” [source](https://twitter.com/1148669001406529540/status/2107993750513320172)

### 12. Minimal core with features as optional extensions

- Pi, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i don't use mcps so the new changes didn't impact me in this area. however, i hope that non-core features are toggleable (even if through command line flags) so we can disable what we don't need.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wwllzb/will_pi_add_builtin_subagents_or_sandboxes/pdm71g8/)

- Pi, 2026-10-01, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “ah then that's an issue, honestly all these should have been left out as a part of extensions i think” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtx1tz/pi_is_becoming_bloated/pd6meyh/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
