# Reliability and speed (`reliability`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/reliability

Area of 4 criteria. Does it stay up and respond quickly?

Criteria: [Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.service_errors.md), [Latency, throughput and fast mode](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.response_speed.md), [Client crashes, freezes and failed tool execution](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.client_failures.md), [Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 11681. Complaint share: 83%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Zed leads reliability, and Claude Code, Pi and OpenCode also rank high, but the lead does not hold across every part of the area. All four rank high on fast responses and on running without crashing. On updates the order changes: OpenCode is the only agent that ranks high, and Claude Code ranks low. On outages and errors, no agent ranks high or low. OpenAI Codex ranks low at 13th of 13, and 48% of the category's reliability complaints come from its users.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest problem is slow generation, where the agent produces text slowly. It covers 1,502 user-weeks, and 62% of them come from OpenAI Codex users. Next come apps that crash, hang or get stuck loading, at 962 user-weeks. Then comes speed that drops quietly over time, at 887. OpenAI Codex users lead both. On crashes, Google Antigravity and OpenCode users come next. On slowdowns, Google Antigravity users come next.

### [Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.service_errors.md)

2319 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total service outage blocks all work | 693 | 759 | OpenAI Codex 300, Cursor 125, Claude Code 99, OpenCode 95, Google Antigravity 35, Amp 28, Pi 4, Kiro 3, Devin 2, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | The agent, its app, or its whole provider is down or unresponsive for minutes to hours, so no request on any model gets through; this excludes errors limited to one model or to capacity messages. |
| Model at capacity or overloaded errors | 462 | 506 | OpenAI Codex 296, Google Antigravity 49, Claude Code 45, OpenCode 40, Cursor 24, Devin 4, Amp 2, GitHub Copilot 1, Factory 1 | Requests are rejected with "model at capacity", "high traffic", 529, or overloaded messages even though the user still has quota, often for one particular model or plan; this excludes full outages and rate limits tied to the user's own usage. |
| Mid-task stream disconnects and server errors | 318 | 335 | OpenAI Codex 116, OpenCode 102, Claude Code 32, Google Antigravity 30, Cursor 15, Amp 7, Cline 6, Devin 4, Pi 3, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Warp 1 | A running task is cut off by 5xx errors, "stream disconnected", empty completions, or connection drops partway through a response, leaving the work incomplete; this excludes requests that fail before they start. |

### [Latency, throughput and fast mode](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.response_speed.md)

3877 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low token throughput during generation | 1502 | 1717 | OpenAI Codex 924, OpenCode 288, Google Antigravity 125, Claude Code 62, Cursor 35, Devin 20, Pi 14, Cline 11, Factory 8, GitHub Copilot 6, Amp 4, Kiro 3, Grok Build 1, Zed 1 | The model streams output at very few tokens per second (often far below advertised rates or the same model's direct API, and often worse at peak demand), so any task crawls; this excludes delays caused by extra reasoning steps, startup lag or stalls before the first token. |
| Silent speed regression or throttling over time | 887 | 990 | OpenAI Codex 453, Google Antigravity 233, Claude Code 68, OpenCode 59, Cursor 53, Devin 10, Amp 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Pi 2, Cline 1, Factory 1, Warp 1 | A model or plan that used to be fast becomes clearly slower after a launch, update, user influx, hidden experiment variant or low remaining quota, with no notice; this excludes models that were slow from the start. |
| Overthinking and redundant steps inflate task time | 607 | 641 | OpenAI Codex 313, Google Antigravity 114, Claude Code 75, OpenCode 45, Cursor 28, GitHub Copilot 6, Devin 6, Cline 5, Pi 5, Factory 4, Kiro 4, Grok Build 2 | The agent spends minutes to hours reasoning, re-checking, auditing, looping or doing work nobody asked for, so simple tasks take far longer than needed or than other tools take; this excludes slowness from low raw inference speed or server capacity. |

### [Client crashes, freezes and failed tool execution](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.client_failures.md)

3256 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App crashes, hangs or stuck loading | 962 | 1034 | OpenAI Codex 440, Google Antigravity 123, OpenCode 109, Claude Code 100, Cursor 77, Cline 24, Devin 24, GitHub Copilot 15, Pi 13, Zed 12, Amp 9, Conductor 6, Warp 6, Factory 4 | The desktop app, IDE or CLI crashes, freezes, shows a blank screen, or sits forever on a loading spinner or 'working' state and has to be force-quit or reinstalled; cases where the app runs but cannot reach the backend are excluded. |
| Shell and tool calls fail to execute | 502 | 532 | OpenAI Codex 200, OpenCode 108, Claude Code 59, Google Antigravity 49, Cursor 23, GitHub Copilot 17, Pi 16, Cline 10, Zed 6, Amp 5, Kiro 4, Warp 2, Conductor 1, Devin 1, Factory 1 | The model's tool calls, shell commands, file patches or sandbox setup fail at the client level (permission or sandbox errors, missing tools mid-session, schema validation failures, malformed tool-call parsing ending the loop); bad commands written by the model itself are excluded. |
| Runaway memory use and leaks | 335 | 371 | OpenAI Codex 143, Claude Code 64, Cursor 39, OpenCode 23, Google Antigravity 17, Devin 13, Zed 12, Pi 8, Cline 5, Amp 3, Kiro 3, Factory 2, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Warp 1 | The client or its spawned processes keep using more RAM until the machine slows down, runs out of memory or crashes; high CPU, battery drain and disk bloat without memory growth are excluded. |

### [Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md)

1078 complaining user-weeks.

| Features silently removed or behaviour changed | 288 | 315 | OpenAI Codex 102, Claude Code 90, Google Antigravity 22, OpenCode 22, Cursor 17, GitHub Copilot 14, Pi 8, Conductor 3, Zed 3, Amp 2, Factory 2, Augment Code 1, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | An update removes or reworks something users relied on without warning, such as modes, context or usage indicators, session renaming, voices, inline assist, thinking-block display, auto-mode permissions, or default flags; full breakage and performance problems are out. |
| Update leaves the tool unable to start or work | 206 | 222 | OpenAI Codex 133, OpenCode 21, Google Antigravity 17, Claude Code 14, Cursor 10, GitHub Copilot 4, Devin 3, Cline 1, Conductor 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1 | After an update the app or CLI won't open, crashes, throws auth or sandbox errors, or can't list or use any model, so the user can't work at all; partial feature loss and slowdowns are out. |
| Disruptive or unreliable update process | 195 | 208 | OpenAI Codex 98, Claude Code 27, Cursor 25, Google Antigravity 19, OpenCode 11, Pi 5, Amp 2, Cline 2, Zed 2, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1, Warp 1 | Updating itself causes trouble: forced restarts mid-session, failed or repeated installs, auto-updates that reinstall a broken version, releases too frequent to keep up with, or missing changelogs; what the new version breaks once installed is out. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 1671 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Lower client memory usage

- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs speed looks great!...any plans to also make it ram efficient?” [source](https://twitter.com/254409634/status/2111508542775803934)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs @claudedevs any plan to reduce memory footprint? its crazy that it takes > 500mb for just running an agent loop, it should be possible to optimise it to below 50mb.” [source](https://twitter.com/1338036555756130304/status/2111490795438268518)
- Cursor, 2026-10-17, @cursor_ai (X): “@jamonholmgren @cursor_ai i want to know why they need 20 gigs of mem on my machine as well” [source](https://twitter.com/159446317/status/2111272476668035382)

### 3. Snappier app performance

- OpenCode, 2026-10-16, r/opencode (Reddit): “could you please fix the paid version? it’s running slowly and keeps freezing.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x7dbzz/opencode_is_at_its_peak/ph3cuj6/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Zed

- Praise, 2026-10-18, @zeddotdev (X): “been using @zeddotdev as my daily driver for a while now. very good stuff! paired with ai, it’s helped me do some of the best work of my life. crazy how much a fast and smooth experience changes the way everything feels. great great great!” [source](https://twitter.com/1973009286251909120/status/2111823118054347158)
- Praise, 2026-10-18, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev is pretty good. i have been using it for a week now and i kinda like it. its light weight, fast and a good replacement for vscode. just does the job without any bloatware.” [source](https://twitter.com/252473758/status/2111847664849736072)
- Praise, 2026-10-13, @zeddotdev (X): “@makiloop @zeddotdev oh, that’s not great. personally, i find it much more responsive than vs code, which has historically had just enough input lag on my system to be extremely noticeable, and the type rendering is imo a bit nicer, but your mileage may vary” [source](https://twitter.com/793795/status/2110049940944879898)
- Praise, 2026-10-12, @zeddotdev (X): “i only use @zeddotdev occasionally when i need to edit a file quickly. but man it’s so fast. i love fast software. if not because of ai coding agents, i’d definitely see myself spending most of the time with zed.” [source](https://twitter.com/17282315/status/2109510447997362476)
- Praise, 2026-10-12, @zeddotdev (X): “i love @zeddotdev - its so fast and smooth as an experience when i have to edit files by hand - and apparently they released their software factory called delta .dev” [source](https://twitter.com/55077784/status/2109563399407276264)

- Complaint, 2026-10-06, @zeddotdev (X): “cosh hit a panic while running commands in zed terminal. the terminal got stuck and the output was fragmented into columns. it was impossible to copy and difficult to read. cosh used vision to inspect the broken terminal and figure out what happened. @zeddotdev [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2088725953581060096/status/2107488357731185093)

### Grok Build

- Praise, 2026-09-05, r/codex (Reddit): “is anyone using astra/sol and grok 4.6 high via grok build? i haven’t received astra yet, but i do use sol. and as of late, i’ve almost entirely shifted to grok build (grok 4.6 high) - mostly because it’s way faster than gpt and very good at completing tasks end-to-end for my flutter project. when there is access to both llms, speed does get the veto from me, and i mostly use codex/gpt only as my general ai driver, and not for my flutter project anymore. how is it for others?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w7on0j/astra_is_absolutely_incredible/p7ys22g/)
