# Latency, throughput and fast mode (`rel.response_speed`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/rel.response_speed

Area: [Reliability and speed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/reliability.md)

**Definition.** How quickly the agent responds and completes work, including paid or fast modes and whether they actually deliver speed.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.service_errors.md) for failures. Not this: see rel.client_crash_resources for local slowness from resource use.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 5313. Complaint share: 72%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code leads on speed. Its users seldom bring speed up, and when they do, praise and complaints come close to even. Zed, Pi and OpenCode also rank high, and their users call them fast, smooth and snappy. Speed is the 5th most rated of 63 criteria, and most users who rate it complain. OpenAI Codex ranks 10th of 10, and its users write 53% of the category's speed complaints. Google Antigravity, 9th, also ranks low, along with Devin, GitHub Copilot and Cline.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe speed they can feel. Pi is "much snappier", Zed feels lighter and more responsive than VS Code, and OpenCode's models stream quickly. Users of the agents that rank low describe waiting. They say simple tasks take minutes on GitHub Copilot, Devin and Google Antigravity, and Cline users call some models unusably slow. OpenAI Codex users say paying for fast mode buys little or no extra speed.

  - Zed, 2026-10-13, @zeddotdev (X): “@makiloop @zeddotdev oh, that’s not great. personally, i find it much more responsive than vs code, which has historically had just enough input lag on my system to be extremely noticeable, and the type rendering is imo a bit nicer, but your mileage may vary” [source](https://twitter.com/793795/status/2110049940944879898)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is slow streaming, where models put out few tokens per second. It accounts for 39% of complaining user-weeks, and OpenAI Codex users write 62% of it. Next come slowdowns that arrive without notice after updates or launches, mostly from OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity users. Fast modes that are not faster form a smaller mode, but OpenAI Codex users write 80% of it.

3877 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low token throughput during generation | 1502 | 1717 | OpenAI Codex 924, OpenCode 288, Google Antigravity 125, Claude Code 62, Cursor 35, Devin 20, Pi 14, Cline 11, Factory 8, GitHub Copilot 6, Amp 4, Kiro 3, Grok Build 1, Zed 1 | The model streams output at very few tokens per second (often far below advertised rates or the same model's direct API, and often worse at peak demand), so any task crawls; this excludes delays caused by extra reasoning steps, startup lag or stalls before the first token. |
| Silent speed regression or throttling over time | 887 | 990 | OpenAI Codex 453, Google Antigravity 233, Claude Code 68, OpenCode 59, Cursor 53, Devin 10, Amp 3, GitHub Copilot 3, Pi 2, Cline 1, Factory 1, Warp 1 | A model or plan that used to be fast becomes clearly slower after a launch, update, user influx, hidden experiment variant or low remaining quota, with no notice; this excludes models that were slow from the start. |
| Overthinking and redundant steps inflate task time | 607 | 641 | OpenAI Codex 313, Google Antigravity 114, Claude Code 75, OpenCode 45, Cursor 28, GitHub Copilot 6, Devin 6, Cline 5, Pi 5, Factory 4, Kiro 4, Grok Build 2 | The agent spends minutes to hours reasoning, re-checking, auditing, looping or doing work nobody asked for, so simple tasks take far longer than needed or than other tools take; this excludes slowness from low raw inference speed or server capacity. |
| Long waits before first response | 369 | 392 | OpenAI Codex 159, OpenCode 80, Google Antigravity 58, Claude Code 26, Cursor 20, GitHub Copilot 7, Cline 6, Devin 4, Kiro 3, Factory 2, Pi 2, Conductor 1, Warp 1 | Even trivial prompts such as "hi" or a one-line edit take tens of seconds to minutes to get any reply, or the agent stops responding for long stretches, often with overload or retry errors; this excludes cases where output, once it starts, is just slow to stream. |
| Fast mode or premium tier not faster | 253 | 286 | OpenAI Codex 203, Cursor 15, Claude Code 12, OpenCode 10, Google Antigravity 8, Amp 1, Cline 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | A paid fast mode, higher plan or speed add-on costs more but gives little or no real speedup, and is sometimes slower than the default; this excludes general slowness when no speed option was paid for or turned on. |
| Sluggish app, IDE or CLI client | 247 | 258 | OpenAI Codex 98, Google Antigravity 28, Cursor 27, OpenCode 26, Claude Code 22, Zed 14, Devin 8, Pi 7, Amp 6, Cline 4, GitHub Copilot 4, Kiro 3 | The agent's own software is slow to start, open chats, sync remote sessions or react in the UI, even when the model is responsive; this excludes slowness in model inference or task execution. |
| Other | 411 | 433 | OpenAI Codex 224, OpenCode 51, Google Antigravity 46, Claude Code 42, Cursor 19, Pi 8, Cline 6, Amp 4, Devin 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Augment Code 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Zed 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 442 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-17, r/codex (Reddit): “you're welcome, i used a banked reset last night. turning fast mode on for that extra 10% increase in tokens per second at 150% faster usage rate! maybe our next improvement can be "fast mode cost increase is proportional to the speed increase that you actually get"?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x8ekzi/reset_landing_by_end_of_day_today_pst/phc77wk/)

### 10. Fast models at affordable cost and quota

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “ultra users report that they can drain their weekly limit in just a day or two. i’m fine with using 3.8, but it should at least be faster and more efficient.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x6gz05/unacceptable_ai_pro_downgrade_antigravity_cli/pgv73zr/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-07, r/codex (Reddit): “please make it as good as luna 5.6 but twice as fast and even faster with /fast with the current price, and we are good to go. haiku 5.5 is extremely fast.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x040wx/haiku_55_released_time_to_unleash_luna_61/)

### 11. Speed guarantees tied to paid plan

- OpenCode, 2026-10-12, @opencode (X): “@opencode at crappy tokens per second speed. your speed got worse. subscription plans should come with minimum speed guarantee.” [source](https://twitter.com/1054156317756026880/status/2109585585560277292)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
