# Client crashes, freezes and failed tool execution (`rel.client_failures`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/rel.client_failures

Area: [Reliability and speed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/reliability.md)

**Definition.** The local app, CLI or extension crashes, freezes, leaks memory or uses too much CPU, or fails to execute the model's tool calls and shell commands.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Outages, server errors and capacity or rate errors](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.service_errors.md) for backend outages and server errors. Not this: see [Updates break working setups](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/rel.update_breakage.md) when a specific update caused it.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 3491. Complaint share: 93%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code does best at running without crashing. Its users describe sessions that run for hours without problems and a desktop app that has become more stable. Pi, Zed, OpenCode and Amp also rank high. Users of Pi, Zed and OpenCode say these agents use little memory and CPU. The criterion is 4.1% of what users of AI coding agents rate, the 10th most rated of 63 criteria, and 92.8% of rated user-weeks complain. OpenAI Codex ranks last, with 47% of the category's complaints here. Google Antigravity, Cursor, Devin and Cline also rank low.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the agents that rank high describe long sessions with no problems and clients that use little memory and CPU. Users of Pi and OpenCode report lower memory use. Users of the agents that rank low describe apps that freeze during a request and lose the result. They also describe a CLI that dies several times a day, memory leaks that use up the machine's RAM, and background processes that drive up CPU use.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is apps that crash, hang or never finish loading, at 30% of complaining user-weeks. OpenAI Codex accounts for 46% of these. Codex has the largest share of every mode. Its shares are highest for breakage on one platform, such as Windows or WSL (66%), and for regressions after client updates (63%). OpenCode has 22% of failed shell and tool calls.

3256 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| App crashes, hangs or stuck loading | 962 | 1034 | OpenAI Codex 440, Google Antigravity 123, OpenCode 109, Claude Code 100, Cursor 77, Cline 24, Devin 24, GitHub Copilot 15, Pi 13, Zed 12, Amp 9, Conductor 6, Warp 6, Factory 4 | The desktop app, IDE or CLI crashes, freezes, shows a blank screen, or sits forever on a loading spinner or 'working' state and has to be force-quit or reinstalled; cases where the app runs but cannot reach the backend are excluded. |
| Shell and tool calls fail to execute | 502 | 532 | OpenAI Codex 200, OpenCode 108, Claude Code 59, Google Antigravity 49, Cursor 23, GitHub Copilot 17, Pi 16, Cline 10, Zed 6, Amp 5, Kiro 4, Warp 2, Conductor 1, Devin 1, Factory 1 | The model's tool calls, shell commands, file patches or sandbox setup fail at the client level (permission or sandbox errors, missing tools mid-session, schema validation failures, malformed tool-call parsing ending the loop); bad commands written by the model itself are excluded. |
| Runaway memory use and leaks | 335 | 371 | OpenAI Codex 143, Claude Code 64, Cursor 39, OpenCode 23, Google Antigravity 17, Devin 13, Zed 12, Pi 8, Cline 5, Amp 3, Kiro 3, Factory 2, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Warp 1 | The client or its spawned processes keep using more RAM until the machine slows down, runs out of memory or crashes; high CPU, battery drain and disk bloat without memory growth are excluded. |
| Prompts not sending or connection dropping | 329 | 359 | OpenAI Codex 185, OpenCode 34, Claude Code 32, Cursor 27, Google Antigravity 22, Cline 11, Amp 6, Devin 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Conductor 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1, Warp 1 | The client cannot send prompts, keeps disconnecting or 'reconnecting', or fails to reach its own app server, websocket or proxy, so sessions stall even though the app itself stays open; full crashes and model-side output errors are excluded. |
| Platform-specific breakage on Windows, Linux, WSL | 277 | 285 | OpenAI Codex 183, Claude Code 19, Google Antigravity 18, Zed 13, OpenCode 11, Cline 9, Cursor 7, Pi 5, GitHub Copilot 4, Amp 2, Devin 2, Warp 2, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | Features that work on one OS or surface are broken on another, such as Windows terminal windows flashing, WSL sandbox failures, unsupported hardware, or the desktop app failing where the CLI or web works; bugs that happen on every platform are excluded. |
| Excessive CPU, battery and fan drain | 230 | 239 | OpenAI Codex 100, Claude Code 26, Cursor 23, Google Antigravity 21, OpenCode 20, Zed 12, Pi 7, GitHub Copilot 5, Devin 5, Warp 3, Amp 2, Factory 2, Kiro 2, Cline 1, Conductor 1 | The app burns CPU, GPU, battery or power even when idle or doing light work (e.g. constant re-renders or animations, heavy Electron shell), so laptops heat up or slow down; memory leaks and disk usage are excluded. |
| Regressions after client updates | 156 | 164 | OpenAI Codex 99, Claude Code 19, Google Antigravity 10, OpenCode 10, Cursor 7, GitHub Copilot 3, Pi 3, Devin 2, Cline 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | A new app or CLI version breaks something that used to work, such as migrations, daemon version mismatches or components that disappear, and users have to roll back or wait for a fix; long-standing bugs that no update introduced are excluded. |
| Uncontrolled disk and cache growth | 90 | 96 | OpenAI Codex 39, OpenCode 16, Cursor 13, Claude Code 10, Google Antigravity 7, Zed 2, Cline 1, Devin 1, Pi 1 | The client fills local storage with caches, temp extracts, leftover worktrees or bloated history (tens of GB) and never cleans them up; RAM and CPU usage are excluded. |
| Other | 480 | 496 | OpenAI Codex 183, Claude Code 91, OpenCode 86, Google Antigravity 42, Cursor 29, Zed 12, Pi 10, Devin 8, Amp 5, Kiro 4, Cline 3, Factory 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Conductor 1, Warp 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 781 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].
