# Automatic model routing and fallback (`models.routing_auto`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/models.routing_auto

Area: [Choosing models](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.md)

**Definition.** Auto mode, routers or fallbacks pick, switch or hide the model used. This includes subagents running on a model other than the one requested, silent downgrades, and inability to exclude models.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Reasoning effort setting and its defaults](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.effort_control.md) for reasoning level. Not this: see [Pay-as-you-go overage, fallback billing and spend caps](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/billing.overage_charges.md) for the resulting charge alone.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 1657. Complaint share: 75%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code, Factory and Devin lead on automatic model routing. Their users say auto mode picks a sensible model, moves to a stronger one when a task gets stuck, and can be left to run. Users rate this often: it is the 18th most rated of 63 criteria, and 74.8% of rated user-weeks complain. Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Google Antigravity and OpenAI Codex rank low. OpenAI Codex ranks last and draws 31% of the category's complaints here. Cursor draws 25%.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of Claude Code, Factory and Devin describe a router they trust. They set it to auto, let it switch models within one session, and see it move to a stronger model when a cheaper one gets stuck. Users of the agents that rank low say the product overrides their choice. Cursor goes back to a model they had disabled whenever a new session opens. GitHub Copilot's auto mode sends work to models that cost more and perform worse. Users of OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity say they get a weaker model than the one they asked for.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is silent substitution. The backend answers with a different model while the product still shows the one the user picked. It accounts for 24% of complaining user-weeks, and OpenAI Codex users write 49% of them. Cursor users write 44% of complaints about a chosen model being reset or switched in session. Claude Code ranks first but has one concentrated problem: its users write 76% of complaints about a safety flag forcing the session onto an older model.

1251 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silent server-side substitution of requested model | 306 | 335 | OpenAI Codex 151, OpenCode 52, Claude Code 47, Cursor 29, Google Antigravity 17, GitHub Copilot 5, Cline 3, Devin 1, Pi 1 | The backend answers a request with a different, usually weaker or cheaper, model than the one selected, while the UI, logs or billing still show the requested model; this covers capacity, throttling or anti-abuse rerouting, but not visible changes to the model picker or safety-triggered fallbacks. |
| Selected model reset or switched in session | 219 | 245 | Cursor 96, OpenAI Codex 57, Claude Code 39, Google Antigravity 8, GitHub Copilot 8, Factory 3, OpenCode 3, Cline 2, Amp 1, Conductor 1, Devin 1 | The client itself changes the user's chosen model, mode or default, for example reverting mid-conversation, pushing a vendor's preferred model, turning on fast or pricier modes, or changing defaults after an update; hidden backend substitution behind an unchanged label is out. |
| Auto mode picks poor or costly models | 191 | 202 | Cursor 82, GitHub Copilot 35, OpenAI Codex 33, OpenCode 18, Claude Code 14, Factory 4, Google Antigravity 3, Cline 1, Kiro 1 | When the user lets an auto router choose, it picks outdated, weak, overpowered or vendor-favoured models, giving worse quality or higher cost than a sensible manual pick; complaints that no auto router exists at all are out. |
| Subagents ignore the requested model | 164 | 175 | Claude Code 57, OpenAI Codex 38, Cursor 38, GitHub Copilot 10, OpenCode 9, Amp 5, Devin 3, Google Antigravity 2, Factory 1, Warp 1 | Spawned subagents, cloud agents, automations or subtasks run on a model other than the one configured or requested (the parent model, a fast variant, another vendor's model), often draining a separate quota; how the main session's own model gets chosen is out. |
| No control to pin, choose or exclude models | 163 | 172 | Cursor 51, OpenAI Codex 40, Claude Code 22, Google Antigravity 14, GitHub Copilot 10, OpenCode 8, Devin 7, Amp 4, Conductor 3, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1, Zed 1 | The product removes or hides the model selector, forces auto, blocks choosing a model for subagents or fallback after quota runs out, or offers no way to exclude unwanted models; complaints about a choice being overridden after the user made it are out. |
| Safety flag forces fallback to older model | 75 | 79 | Claude Code 57, OpenAI Codex 12, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, Cursor 1, Devin 1, Factory 1 | A content or policy classifier (for example cybersecurity or virus topics) moves the session to an older or lower-tier model and keeps it there, even for harmless work; downgrades driven by capacity or cost are out. |
| No record of which model served each turn | 47 | 53 | OpenAI Codex 23, Cursor 14, Claude Code 4, OpenCode 3, Google Antigravity 1, Cline 1, Conductor 1 | Users cannot see or audit which model actually handled past turns or requests (status shows only the current pick, analytics don't match what was selected, so users write their own scripts or proxies to check); the substitution itself is covered by other modes, so this one covers only the lack of transparency. |
| Missing automatic task-based model routing | 39 | 39 | OpenAI Codex 14, Claude Code 9, Google Antigravity 4, OpenCode 4, Cursor 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Amp 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1 | Users want the agent to pick the right model or reasoning level for each task or subtask and have to choose by hand because no router exists; complaints about a router that exists but performs badly are out. |
| Other | 86 | 89 | OpenAI Codex 24, Cursor 23, Claude Code 17, Google Antigravity 8, OpenCode 5, GitHub Copilot 3, Pi 2, Amp 1, Conductor 1, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Silent server-side substitution of requested model

- OpenCode, 2026-10-17, r/opencode (Reddit): “it acts like deepseek... are they tricking us? the output is not like i'm used to for glm5.3 flash on all different providers i get the same type of output and on opencode not... what's going on? any1 else noticing this?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x87ie5/is_glm_53_free_deepseek/)

#### Auto mode picks poor or costly models

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-15, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “this is the entire reason why i don’t use auto. even deciding if we disable auto on enterprise level because of this” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x6iwuq/please_add_an_option_to_disable_gpt53codex/pgw0an0/)

#### Subagents ignore the requested model

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “what happened is that opus 5.5 spawned some sub agents that were running on fable.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6qfpi/fable_used_when_called_opus_55_max/pgxi9nt/)
- Cursor, 2026-10-15, @cursor_ai (X): “trying to figure out why bot-spawned cursor agents were so bad... looks like bot ignores the cursor default model setting (grok 4.7 high), and defaults to... a 1-year old non sota model? @cursor_ai you're killing me guys what is this? - Amp, 2026-10-12, @AmpCode (X): “@justine_chang39 @ampcode the model picker getting ignored by sub-agents is so annoying. does the orb config actually pass the model flag through?” [source](https://twitter.com/1643908924817670145/status/2109762293127094639)

#### No control to pin, choose or exclude models

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-11, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i stopped using github copilot student plan after they made it auto mode” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x2p2k2/200_ai_credits_for_students_how_are_we_supposed/pf7mof1/)

#### Safety flag forces fallback to older model

- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “ah, i do use it all the time and get downgraded all the time. the dang was about the cybersecurity application cause it sounded awesome.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x043yp/i_used_claude_code_to_reverseengineer_an_lg_tv/peunznd/)
- Factory, 2026-10-01, @droid (X): “@fellipesoares @droid opus 5.5, though heads up: they downgrade you to kimi k3 once you hit the limit. also, on the droid cli, you have to toggle off that setting if you don't want it added as a co-author.” [source](https://twitter.com/1783744572977455104/status/2105742742790025518)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-29, r/codex (Reddit): “it's not unlimited. they soft-cap the model after so many prompts and force you onto a weaker model.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wsqju9/gpt56_sol_is_listed_as_unlimited_on_the_pro_plan/pcug5bx/)

#### No record of which model served each turn

- OpenCode, 2026-09-25, r/opencode (Reddit): “sometimes i use bigpickle in a web chat and when i ask it what model it uses, it tells me deepseek, it doesn't give me the model or series, and 7 weeks ago, it told me it was using gml 5.3flash, and 2 months ago it told me that its base layer was mimo2.5...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wp5a41/about_bigpickle_which_is_very_good_lately/pc0mnuv/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-16, r/codex (Reddit): “[link] very interesting that gpt 5.6 terra "did something", i dont even use terra, i only use sol.what i also realised is it has "terra" on other days too even tho i never use it.its so weird, also my scheduled tasks are empty” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wi1tpt/something_weird_happened/pa7m7wn/)

#### Other

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@vikaskansalhq @antigravity we need a fallback to flash 3.8, not flash lite 3.5. update either 3.5 flash lite or change the fallback when argon is out” [source](https://twitter.com/300610801/status/2110984653402202251)
- Cursor, 2026-10-14, r/cursor (Reddit): “the biggest issue for me is that it stopped switching smoothly to another model when one goes down. if you still want an actual code editor instead of command-line tools, setting up vs code with your own api key feels pretty close to how cursor used to work.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x4kv5s/yet_another_cursor_letdown_since_spacex/pgne87p/)
- Cursor, 2026-10-13, r/cursor (Reddit): “it’s not, but cursor used to be model agnostic. if a model went offline, it would route you to another appropriate model. doesn’t do that anymore.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x4kv5s/yet_another_cursor_letdown_since_spacex/pggnzwz/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 565 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Automatic per-task model and effort routing

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs can you solve the model allocation issue? add a judgment/check at the front. the current default mode opus 5.5 is too expensive, including the effort configuration and model configuration.”” [source](https://twitter.com/1691114437560999936/status/2111006207423217821)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “need system one model in claude code from anthropic to steer model and effort based on the task. currently struck at opus (medium) or based on manual prompting. @claudedevs @claudeai” [source](https://twitter.com/49551653/status/2110802265036705949)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-10, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux @rohit3a i think an autorouter for choosing the most capable model in codex cli would be very great or do i miss such a function? i think it would be better for efficiency and also for technical balancing.” [source](https://twitter.com/43564329/status/2108811458322514243)

### 3. Per-subagent model selection

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity 3. increase the ability to freely configure sub-agent models. 4. develop byok capability, allowing users to freely connect to other models. 5. add functionality for prompts to optimize user input prompts.” [source](https://twitter.com/1553297981134147584/status/2111784771361948134)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “hi @antigravity, are you planning to make the model setting for custom subagents more flexible - like in headless mode, where you can specify an exact model + effort level (e.g. gemini-3.8-flash-high) — instead of the current limited options (inherit, flash, or pro)? [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2063470808371179520/status/2110963116435771488)

### 4. Show which model served request

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-13, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “iam pretty sure he just change the model after first sending it to gemini 3.8 flash , also the harness should give the model its name ( id ) .” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x558m3/why_argon_is_hallucinating_lol/pgjmj7u/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-12, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@gsemetfr @choudharyjayant @githubcopilot u r right on this, the model selection is still not fully clear i want to start tracking this to be able to understand the selection” [source](https://twitter.com/36475277/status/2109731110292734016)
- Cursor, 2026-10-11, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai routing shorter requests to a faster model is good economics. the part to make explicit is the boundary: a developer should know when a cheaper model is answering, because quality differs by task.” [source](https://twitter.com/1871542680393568256/status/2109240890455941466)

### 5. Exclude specific models from auto routing

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-15, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i'm on the enterprise plan. gpt-5.3-codex is the default fallback model, but its api pricing is over 10 times that of luna, and it performs worse. honestly, this makes me not want to use auto. we still can't disable a model that's over a year old. how does that benefit users?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x6iwuq/please_add_an_option_to_disable_gpt53codex/)
- Amp, 2026-10-15, @AmpCode (X): “my first experience with @ampcode was signing in with chatgpt, letting it use that subscription, doing 1 task and seeing "no usage available" - turns out it was using anthropic, try to disable, still can't get it to stop using anthropic? so confused...” [source](https://twitter.com/151126971/status/2110645993435799575)
- Cursor, 2026-10-14, @cursor_ai (X): “@rxs1gma @x @cursor_ai @grok grok's answer makes no sense. this eliminates the usability of grok bot for vast majority of its users. no way in hell anyone would pay api prices to use claude in grok bot without even an opt out.” [source](https://twitter.com/830171539999952896/status/2110342210604396794)

### 6. Route simple tasks to cheaper models

### 7. Fallback model when quota or provider fails

- OpenCode, 2026-10-13, r/opencode (Reddit): “maybe implement an option where it can delegate the work to some other model of similar capabilities during that timeframe. now this would only work if you use deepseek as a workhorse and some other model as the orchestrator.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x4mlig/built_a_small_opencode_v2_plugin_to_avoid/pgg53f9/)

### 8. Stop silent downgrades to weaker models

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-09, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “i suspect that i am getting routed to a worse #gptastra in the last days... because it doesn't get me like it used to. bad design choices, removing seo optimizations... i am using gpt-6 astra xhigh and it feels like gpt 5.0 #openai #codex #gpt6 [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2107196563017641985/status/2108393838641324147)

### 9. Stop forcing Grok as default model

- Cursor, 2026-10-16, r/cursor (Reddit): “you seem to have raised a very critical decision about not putting the consumer first, grok usage is forced and not justified to be a default one.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x500t9/cursor_degradation/ph4q7in/)
- Cursor, 2026-10-15, r/cursor (Reddit): “and actually, why the heck does it auto-select grok when i’ve chosen a different model with each new agent? no, i don’t want to do gymnastics to change settings blah blah, i’ll just go somewhere else thenx” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x65v6o/great_time_for_competitors_to_step_in/pgvny5q/)

### 10. Improve auto routing quality and reliability

- Cursor, 2026-09-29, r/cursor (Reddit): “auto is no longer viable for us (team of 15 users). we manually switch between composer and grok now.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wrbmrn/is_it_a_waste_of_money_to_run_opus_55_inside_of/pcqk8p9/)

### 11. Separate models for planning and execution

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-16, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “more generally if they want use to switch to hydra fusion or auto, they need to allow us to select the model per profiles, including thinking and context size” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x6iwuq/please_add_an_option_to_disable_gpt53codex/ph6ui18/)

- Conductor, 2026-09-15, @conductor_build (X): “hey @conductor_build i would love for the option to be able to switch the selected model provider in the same chat, for example switching from fable to astra without needing to start a new chat” [source](https://twitter.com/1513865549629075467/status/2099908647794905243)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “even better now that haiku 5.5 also has auto mode. for the projects already done or in maintenance, it's very useful for very low usage.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x0tkgg/im_stunned_telling_you_stunned_with_how_much/pes7449/)

### Factory

- Praise, 2026-10-05, @FactoryAI (X): “got a @factoryai max plan voucher from ben's campaign 🥳 auto model routing is working really well for now. so many things planned to make the best use of it while it lasts 😈 [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2864964553/status/2107234375708327984)

### Devin

- Praise, 2026-09-12, @cognition (X): “swe-2 is very good. as expected. @devinai has been the most agi-tinted eng harness for a while and fusion has been the only model router worth trusting. @cognition has a magic to them that other 3p harness shops haven't figured out. - Complaint, 2026-10-15, @AmpCode (X): “my first experience with @ampcode was signing in with chatgpt, letting it use that subscription, doing 1 task and seeing "no usage available" - turns out it was using anthropic, try to disable, still can't get it to stop using anthropic? so confused...” [source](https://twitter.com/151126971/status/2110645993435799575)

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-09-17, @pidotdev (X): “@leobuilds_ i have made a different move to what you are asking. openrouter and @pidotdev clever work = claude fable image work = open ai grunt work = deepseek flash latest all from the cli. pi does the routing” [source](https://twitter.com/2074925659466633216/status/2100648276336976114)
- Praise, 2026-09-18, @pidotdev (X): “i made an experimental model router for @pidotdev using jev as the decision maker. it's not a generic "pick a cheaper model" router. it isolates work into logical threads and prices cache reads/writes, cold context, expected output + the cost of switching back. @completeskeptic @typesafeai this wouldn't of been possible without jev, it's an amazing primitive to make software with 💪🏻” [source](https://twitter.com/1339564154307440640/status/2101060333964083710)
- Complaint, 2026-09-22, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “a self-written one that forces pi to always use \`deepseek-flash\` and never use \`deepseek-v4-pro\`, because something so simple apparently needs an extension. luckily it takes 2 minutes to code one.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wml882/what_extensions_do_you_think_are_essential_and/pbg4d1w/)

### Cline

- Complaint, 2026-10-05, @cline (X): “@cline it's all bullshit; they steer you toward weak models, that's the only way they can keep costs down. i would never choose a bad router over a good model.” [source](https://twitter.com/1972597660642390016/status/2107213506009600484)
- Complaint, 2026-09-18, @cline (X): “@cline cline and kimi k3 speedrun: free quota gone in 60 mins stealth downgrades your reasoning to low dies trying to read a 1mb image laggy, incomplete outputsback to claude/gpt we go. your app is total garbage.” [source](https://twitter.com/791185776604221440/status/2101080796689756405)

### Conductor

- Complaint, 2026-10-13, @conductor_build (X): “@charlieholtz @conductor_build i basically have a chat with codex that i was working on calmly, until i opened a new chat tab with claude for him to do an analysis, after the analysis i went back to my tab with codex and apparently he is using my claude instead of codex!...” [source](https://twitter.com/193906264/status/2110048029814235260)

### Kiro

- Praise, 2026-10-14, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “try auto. it's really good at routing to the best model in terms of price/quality. otherwise you're just paying >2x for very little extra quality.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1x5hj2i/has_aws_finally_given_up_on_kiro/pgotoyp/)
- Praise, 2026-09-11, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “i use kiro ide with auto model. works very well, few tokens.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1wchsii/frontier_models_on_other_providers_vs_the_same/p92st2r/)

### Zed

- Praise, 2026-09-21, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “my personal huge level up was going from cursor ide to zed + omp. it is more efficient, i have everything i could've asked for and more. i love the custom fallbacks. being able to force the use of subagents. and the advisor... the advisor is really something tbh” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wlpj30/lord_forgive_me_for_the_time_i_wasted/pb4z6kj/)

### Warp

- Complaint, 2026-09-15, r/warpdotdev (Reddit): “i chose gpt 5.6 luna xhigh as my model, when it failed, fallback model opus 5 max continued, which rapidly consumes more credits. i can't stand it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/warpdotdev/comments/1oa0abo/warp_dirty_tactics_sonnet_45_thinking_uses_cheap/pa1hdbn/)
