# Quality got worse or better over time (`models.quality_drift`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/models.quality_drift

Area: [Choosing models](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.md)

**Definition.** The post compares the agent or one of its models with an earlier time and says it got worse or better: 'nerfed', 'dumber since last week', 'better than at launch'. An explicit comparison with the past is required.

**Boundary.** Not this: see general.unspecific for a verdict with no comparison over time. Not this: see [Can do the user's kind of task](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.capability.md) for what it can do now. Not this: see [Price, allowance or plan terms changed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.allowance_change.md) for changed quotas or prices.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 6451. Complaint share: 76%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code leads on whether quality holds up over time. Devin and Google Antigravity also rank high. Their users describe new releases as a step up from earlier ones. Even so, complaints outnumber praise for Claude Code. This is the 4th most rated thing about AI coding agents, and 75.8% of the user-weeks that rate it are complaints. OpenAI Codex and Cursor rank low. OpenAI Codex users say models were nerfed after launch. They rate this 3.52 times as often as other users and write 53% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe change as progress. Claude Code users say Opus 5.5 fixed what went wrong in Opus 5. Devin users say the product is far better than it used to be. Google Antigravity users say it has improved over a few months. Users of the trailing agents describe decline. OpenAI Codex users say a model was strong at release and then got worse soon after. Cursor users say models that used to be good have changed, and that the product has gone downhill since an earlier release.

  - Claude Code, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i'm super happy with opus 5.5 myself. opus 5 was terrible for me: the documents it wrote was garbled and unreadable; it was inventing problems or digressing from the topic all the time, so i was using opus 4.6 mostly, but with 5.5; it just hits the spot. well done anthropic!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8a8g0/what_are_they_feeding_the_ai_engineers/phdc2sq/)
  - Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “i tried @antigravity after a few months and it's improved quite a bit. i really like it and find it's solutions quite innovative. great work.” [source](https://twitter.com/2849647170/status/2111900659423617243)

  - Cursor, 2026-10-14, r/cursor (Reddit): “before today i would say composer 2.5 was great and had not changed, but after some work today and yesterday using composer that has changed. it does not seem the same as it was in the past, and its sad really. it really was a good model.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x61pas/ive_been_using_composer_25_fast_in_the_last_few/pgrkbhs/)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest mode is a model that keeps its name but gets worse after launch. It accounts for 30% of complaining user-weeks, and OpenAI Codex users write 54% of it. Next is a new version that does worse than the one before, at 23%. OpenAI Codex users write most of every named mode but one, including 69% of complaints that tie lower quality to tighter limits. Cursor's largest share is in complaints that the whole product declined.

4964 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same model silently degraded after launch | 1485 | 1635 | OpenAI Codex 808, Claude Code 478, Google Antigravity 61, OpenCode 61, Cursor 60, GitHub Copilot 7, Cline 3, Devin 3, Augment Code 1, Factory 1, Pi 1, Warp 1 | The post says a model under the same name and version got dumber, lazier or more error-prone some time after release, using words like 'nerfed', 'lobotomized' or 'great the first week'. Out: a newer version being compared with an older one, and complaints that are only about usage or price. |
| New version regresses from its predecessor | 1164 | 1290 | OpenAI Codex 634, Claude Code 307, Cursor 90, Google Antigravity 84, OpenCode 36, GitHub Copilot 9, Pi 2, Amp 1, Devin 1 | The post says a newer model version or release does worse than the one before it (for example a 6 vs 5.6, or 5 vs 4.8), often adding that the user went back to the older one. Out: one version decaying over time, and comparisons with a competitor's model that never mention an earlier version. |
| Worse quality alongside tighter usage limits | 631 | 673 | OpenAI Codex 434, Claude Code 128, Cursor 31, Google Antigravity 23, OpenCode 8, GitHub Copilot 4, Kiro 2, Devin 1 | The post says quality has dropped while quota, limits or price got worse at the same time, so the user gets less value than in the past. Out: complaints only about limits or price that make no claim about output quality over time. |
| Unpredictable day-to-day quality swings | 450 | 488 | OpenAI Codex 234, Claude Code 151, Google Antigravity 27, Cursor 26, OpenCode 10, GitHub Copilot 1, Devin 1 | The post says quality changes from day to day, by time of day, or from user to user ('great yesterday, lobotomized today', 'not for everyone'), with no steady trend. Out: a lasting decline that is described as one-way. |
| Whole agent product declined over time | 373 | 389 | OpenAI Codex 164, Cursor 91, Claude Code 54, Google Antigravity 36, OpenCode 11, GitHub Copilot 8, Factory 4, Pi 2, Cline 1, Devin 1, Warp 1 | The post says the agent app or platform as a whole got worse than it used to be (every model worse, useful features removed, crashes, ignored instruction files). Out: complaints about one specific model's version history. |
| Shallower reasoning and slower runs than before | 330 | 348 | OpenAI Codex 180, Claude Code 63, Google Antigravity 57, Cursor 16, OpenCode 13, Devin 1 | The post says the model now thinks for less time, skips reasoning, gives skimmed answers, loops, or takes much longer on tasks it used to finish quickly. Out: general 'dumber' claims that don't mention reasoning depth, speed or looping. |
| Current model degraded before a new release | 308 | 327 | OpenAI Codex 200, Claude Code 79, Google Antigravity 18, Cursor 8, GitHub Copilot 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1 | The post links a quality drop in the current model to an upcoming or just-released successor, for example 'they always get dumb right before a release' or 'they lobotomize the previous model'. Out: drops that aren't tied to any release timing. |
| Suspected silent model swap or quantization | 290 | 330 | OpenAI Codex 174, Claude Code 55, OpenCode 37, Google Antigravity 13, Cursor 7, GitHub Copilot 2, Cline 1, Devin 1 | The post suspects that requests are secretly sent to a weaker, quantized or renamed model instead of the one advertised, compared with how that model used to behave. Out: open, announced deprecations or model removals. |
| Other | 515 | 524 | OpenAI Codex 205, Claude Code 145, OpenCode 50, Cursor 49, Google Antigravity 47, Pi 5, GitHub Copilot 4, Devin 4, Cline 3, Amp 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

#### Shallower reasoning and slower runs than before

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-14, r/codex (Reddit): “they're clearly out of compute. "pro" is now giving two paragraph answers to engineering questions that amount to "yeah, i guess that could probably work". gonna downgrade back to the $20 plan and switch to claude while i wait for oai to get their shit together.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x5qnnb/this_is_ridiculous/pgrrty6/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “the same thing happened to me. tasks that the model handles effortlessly, it spent the whole sunday slow and dumb. and attempts to fix it generated even more 'entropy' in the code.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3rtgy/sol_61_nerfed_today/pfe9xn9/)

#### Current model degraded before a new release

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “ever since gemini 4 argon came out, my 3.8 flash has been acting like a newborn baby locked in a cage with zero socialization... it is hallucinating so much.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x8y4ap/wth_is_happening_with_gemini_38_flash/)

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i already have a mod for this so i know it's a nerf whether anyone believes it or not. the reason could be model release though because this always happens a few days before any model release” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6j064/did_opus_55_just_get_more_expensive/pgx3iqp/)

#### Suspected silent model swap or quantization

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i think google label is "high" or "3.8" to make user think it is an upgrade. actually they reduce the context count or horsepower in the back and make everything so bad now” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x8y4ap/wth_is_happening_with_gemini_38_flash/phi675m/)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “i think they released the full model (bf16) at the beginning. everyone was excited about the output quality and it’s computationally too demanding for openai. then they slowly started to serve the quantized astra model and it is terrible.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3pifc/what_happened_to_astra/pfd7bcb/)

#### Other

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 495 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Stop silently degrading model quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “i would rather chose not degrading models after launch. what's the point of having "unlimited" like usage if the output is not even comparable anymore when it was launched?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x303a0/what_are_they_planning_for_us/pf7tslm/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs killig it lately guys. i love it. (please dont ever nerf opus 5.5)” [source](https://twitter.com/1598838075458822144/status/2108529236378103883)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “seriously, dev day was such a joke. hyped up by tibo only to lay an egg with dot after cutting limits in half. dude, f dot and spaces. give us non-nerfed models with privacy and high limits. that’s all i care about.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wzxii9/i_have_to_tell_you_what_resets_really_mean/pemkgsu/)

### 2. Restore previous model version or quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-16, r/codex (Reddit): “not a single example audiofile = slop. all we want is the old [link] back or a competitor with the exact same good old models and features and settings updated to modern standarts” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x340s8/codex_is_an_underrated_music_production_tool_ive/ph43xr8/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, r/codex (Reddit): “you know what will make me addicted? un-nerfed astra and cheaper price of it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x6h0oh/the_reset_system_literally_rewards_you_for_nuking/pgxa4tl/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-14, r/opencode (Reddit): “for the last 24-36 hours big pickle was **incredible**! smart, fast. it was like dancing. now is back to how it was 2 days ago: crawls, stops for minutes before even the "thinking". and it's quite dumb. whatever you guys did, go back to yesterday! it was perfect!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x5cyn5/big_pickle_worked_great_for_36_hours_now_is_back/)

### 3. Smarter higher-quality models

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-09, r/codex (Reddit): “jesus, today's update is something for dots, which we can't use in the uk, so that's another pointless offering. just fix the damn models and the base offering then you can add as many toys as you like. the 28-day thing is just annoying me now.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x1pgkx/astra_decline/pewzlwo/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, r/codex (Reddit): “can we just get a model that’s more competent than opus 5.5 now?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wyx5pr/honestly_im_glad_openai_truly_understands_what/pe86wsp/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity chat history is seriously broken message formating is not polished please make it opus 5.5 level” [source](https://twitter.com/402577145/status/2107446909267063087)

### 4. Consistent model quality over time

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “we use astra all day and it’s the worst we’ve seen this model. terrible performance and workflows it used to excel in last week. we should be past the whole model nerf and lobotomies… need reliability.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3pifc/what_happened_to_astra/pfeguvp/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “the answer to that question doesn’t matter when usage , model quality and token speed fluctuate and change so wildly on a day to day basis. maybe they should focus on fixing those three first” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x303a0/what_are_they_planning_for_us/pf8571t/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, r/codex (Reddit): “i would settle for predictability. just as a hobbyist, and i understand that we're in an evolving marketplace, but i want something reliable and depandable, that's it, period.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wyx5pr/honestly_im_glad_openai_truly_understands_what/pe8fmkz/)

### 5. Fix currently degraded model quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, r/codex (Reddit): “they can fix their lobotomized models first. luna high and sol 6.1 have been absolute trash on codex. (compared to the same models on copilot)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wxq5ng/new_tibo_post/pdzvwtt/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-03, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs to be honest, can you look into the degradation issue? because right now, opus5.5 is definitely not performing as well as last week.” [source](https://twitter.com/885374083520528385/status/2106218713708130341)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-30, @ClaudeDevs (X): “i know there's a lot of appreciation for sonnet 5.5, it shows upgrade on benchmarks however i have observed a significant decline in comprehension, context retention and thinking abilities since the upgrade. hoping @anthropicai @claudedevs @claudeai will fix this soon” [source](https://twitter.com/342504876/status/2105181083570774273)

### 6. Fix regressions in newer models

- Cursor, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai ima bout to cancel like 7 $200 max subscriptions if yall dont fix grok 4.7 opus is the only usable ai at this point” [source](https://twitter.com/942601921860313089/status/2108789129878372505)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-02, r/codex (Reddit): “still worse than 5.6 sol. theoretical intelligence might be higher, but practical one is below 5.6. whats worse 6.1 medium started doing mistakes not even 6.0 medium was not doing. we need 6.2” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wvq11f/gpt61_sol/pdeabpz/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-28, r/codex (Reddit): “if they fix the crap they did with sol and luna 6, i'm already happy” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wsgswz/5_things_openai_must_cook_on_at_devday_to_keep_my/pcltbgs/)

### 7. Keep current model behavior unchanged

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-08, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “because of how dumb it is. but i still rather have that than older immediately “done” models please don’t go back to that google” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x0u1lt/how_it_feels_using_38_flash/peo338x/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-30, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “all they need to do is leave shit alone. we like opus 5.5. it’s great, stop messing with it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wtoar4/anthropic_please_dont_fuck_this_up/pcwgxny/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-28, r/codex (Reddit): “he's not denying 6 sol is basically 5.6 terra max. i wish they would stop this nonsense. people need consistency for their work, not relabelled models and magical dev days.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1ws7fk0/more_tweets_from_tibo/pcj1gkn/)

### 8. Smarter models at lower cost and tokens

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-11, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “3.8 flash is a good lightweight model. i have codex delegate tasks to it all the time. but i'm also looking for models that are actually smart and can answer basic questions correctly on a consistent basis.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x33an3/unpopular_opinion_90_of_the_hate_toward_google/pf87u96/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “i signed up for one more month to keep my 20x grandfathered plan, then i'm cancelling for opus 5.5 after unless we get a more intelligent model with better usage than opus 5.5.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x0bw8j/anybody_keeping_codex_because_they_have_resets/pejzz3d/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-07, r/codex (Reddit): “someone tell him we really only need 2 things - - a model at least on par with opus 5.5 in intelligence, token speed and usage allowance. - for resets to not advance the normal reset date.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wzid9b/the_tibo_28_day_challenge_is_not_really_anything/peeecxd/)

### 9. Model quality competitive with rivals

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “i think people have a right to complain. usage limits cut in half, inferior models to the competition, slowest frontier models and now their latest update broke the codex browser on macos. we are customers, not sports fans.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x0dngq/does_anyone_in_this_subreddit_do_anything_besides/pem12r7/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-01, r/codex (Reddit): “well a problem that 6.1 sol couldn’t fix without constant reiteration opus 4.6 fixed it in a single turn. claude is getting too many wins, come on openai give us something to stay(got opus 4.6 through antigravity)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wv1fc7/codex_left_90000_temp_files_in_a_nontemp/pd90429/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-29, r/codex (Reddit): “it has to compete with opus 5.5 at both cost and performance, not astra.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wtgdlh/better_than_60_sol_i_hope/pctwtdv/)

### 10. Disclose changes to served model quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-26, r/codex (Reddit): “brooo now it makes sense why i felt codex was doing way worse than usual yesterday. they should be at least transparent about it as its very sketchy to bill same for sub par model. if this continues i would consider some alternatives. claude code any better?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wqjxyy/i_thought_the_model_nerf_posts_were_bullshit/pc5qkvn/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-23, r/codex (Reddit): “that’s my biggest issue right now. they clearly changed something and it’s not the same astra - at the very least be transparent about it. there should be some regulation around this.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wo0mmf/copex/pbmab64/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-21, r/codex (Reddit): “they are not only degrading models but they also doing what anthropic did just not disclosing it. [link]” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wmgw7p/codex_usage_and_operation_discussion_last_updated/pb7c3vd/)

### 11. No quantized model serving

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-01, r/codex (Reddit): “i'd be happy to be told i'm getting a quantized model. i'd let some prompts wait hours for full quant if i could.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wuw0hu/capabilities_reduced_until_later_is_way_too_vague/pdb2ohw/)

### 12. Prioritize model quality over new features

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-18, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux focus on building more stable and efficient models. the codex app is becoming increasingly bloated—a mountain of technical debt, spaghetti code, and pointless feature bloat.” [source](https://twitter.com/1073769670014951424/status/2111855679782920248)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “i just moved over to claude for opus 5.5. you get a lot of usage and the model is a beast. i wish openai would improve their models instead of releasing dot and 30 days of minor improvements. if the model sucks, there's no point.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x0xg1z/after_using_opus_55_since_it_released_all_the/peqks5w/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i'm super happy with opus 5.5 myself. opus 5 was terrible for me: the documents it wrote was garbled and unreadable; it was inventing problems or digressing from the topic all the time, so i was using opus 4.6 mostly, but with 5.5; it just hits the spot. well done anthropic!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8a8g0/what_are_they_feeding_the_ai_engineers/phdc2sq/)

### Google Antigravity

- Praise, 2026-10-18, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “sounds more like your repo is poor and has a bunch of old information, causing the model to perform poorly, like the made up index column. for me at least argon is a big improvement.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x8x6nn/dont_worry_too_much_argon_its_genuinely_not_that/phhv04u/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-04, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “to be honest, i already felt that pi was starting to decline after the addition of built-in mcp... nowadays, open source projects try to achieve everything, but in reality, i only need its lightweight kernel. pi-ai, pi-agent, a simple coding agent module, and a lively plugin marketplace are all you need.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wwllzb/will_pi_add_builtin_subagents_or_sandboxes/pdrcstc/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-13, @FactoryAI (X): “@enoreyes @factoryai sorry for the harsh criticism, but i'm a longtime droid user. it used to be great, and you listened to feedback. now it's slower and less capable. i haven't used my account in ages because it's hard to use compared to codex, claude code, cursor, or devin.” [source](https://twitter.com/2020825549367566336/status/2110073373287927895)
