# Choosing models (`models`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/models

Area of 4 criteria. Which models do you get, and do they hold up?

Criteria: [Which models are offered on a plan and when](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.catalog_access.md), [Automatic model routing and fallback](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.routing_auto.md), [Reasoning effort setting and its defaults](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.effort_control.md), [Quality got worse or better over time](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.quality_drift.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 11661. Complaint share: 73%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code is the best agent for choosing models, and its lead holds across the area: it ranks high on every criterion. Devin ranks high on every criterion except effort settings and is 2nd of 12 overall. OpenAI Codex ranks low on quality over time, model choice and auto mode, and its users write 43% of the category's complaints here. Google Antigravity is 12th of 12. It ranks low on model choice, auto mode and effort, yet ranks high on quality holding up. Cursor ranks low on quality and auto mode.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is a model that quietly gets worse after launch. It accounts for 30% of complaints about quality over time. OpenAI Codex users write 54% of those complaints and Claude Code users 32%. Next come new versions that do worse than the old ones, again mostly from OpenAI Codex users. On model choice, the top complaint is a model kept off the user's plan, and 50% of those come from Google Antigravity users.

### [Which models are offered on a plan and when](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.catalog_access.md)

2261 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model withheld from user's plan tier | 552 | 588 | Google Antigravity 277, OpenAI Codex 123, Claude Code 50, OpenCode 38, Cursor 33, GitHub Copilot 14, Kiro 8, Amp 3, Devin 3, Cline 2, Pi 1 | A model the user expects is locked out of their paid tier, enterprise license, partner-bundled or regional plan, or reaches them only at lower reasoning settings, while other tiers or regions get it; this excludes rollout delays that hit every plan equally. |
| Staggered rollout leaves paying users waiting | 419 | 437 | OpenAI Codex 184, Google Antigravity 107, OpenCode 59, Kiro 23, Claude Code 15, Cursor 12, Cline 4, GitHub Copilot 4, Factory 3, Amp 2, Conductor 2, Pi 2, Devin 1, Zed 1 | A model has been announced and others already have it, but the user still has no access days or weeks later, with no timeline or explanation, despite updating and reinstalling; this excludes models that are permanently restricted to certain plans. |
| Model removed or deprecated without warning | 378 | 407 | Google Antigravity 184, OpenAI Codex 63, Cursor 55, OpenCode 42, Claude Code 18, GitHub Copilot 10, Kiro 3, Pi 2, Amp 1 | A model the user relied on is removed, replaced or cut from their plan, or a whole provider leaves the tool, which breaks configs and workflows or erases usage history; this excludes models that were never offered. |

### [Automatic model routing and fallback](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.routing_auto.md)

1251 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silent server-side substitution of requested model | 306 | 335 | OpenAI Codex 151, OpenCode 52, Claude Code 47, Cursor 29, Google Antigravity 17, GitHub Copilot 5, Cline 3, Devin 1, Pi 1 | The backend answers a request with a different, usually weaker or cheaper, model than the one selected, while the UI, logs or billing still show the requested model; this covers capacity, throttling or anti-abuse rerouting, but not visible changes to the model picker or safety-triggered fallbacks. |
| Selected model reset or switched in session | 219 | 245 | Cursor 96, OpenAI Codex 57, Claude Code 39, Google Antigravity 8, GitHub Copilot 8, Factory 3, OpenCode 3, Cline 2, Amp 1, Conductor 1, Devin 1 | The client itself changes the user's chosen model, mode or default, for example reverting mid-conversation, pushing a vendor's preferred model, turning on fast or pricier modes, or changing defaults after an update; hidden backend substitution behind an unchanged label is out. |
| Auto mode picks poor or costly models | 191 | 202 | Cursor 82, GitHub Copilot 35, OpenAI Codex 33, OpenCode 18, Claude Code 14, Factory 4, Google Antigravity 3, Cline 1, Kiro 1 | When the user lets an auto router choose, it picks outdated, weak, overpowered or vendor-favoured models, giving worse quality or higher cost than a sensible manual pick; complaints that no auto router exists at all are out. |

### [Reasoning effort setting and its defaults](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.effort_control.md)

717 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High effort overthinks without better results | 277 | 294 | OpenAI Codex 140, Claude Code 83, OpenCode 27, Google Antigravity 12, GitHub Copilot 4, Cursor 3, Cline 2, Devin 2, Kiro 2, Pi 1, Warp 1 | At high, xhigh or max effort the agent thinks for a very long time, loops on itself ('hmm, wait'), over-engineers, writes too many tests, chases unlikely edge cases or never delivers, and this costs much more time and tokens than lower levels for the same or worse output; complaints about lower levels being too weak are out. |
| Low effort produces sloppy work needing rework | 108 | 112 | OpenAI Codex 64, Claude Code 22, Google Antigravity 9, Cursor 6, OpenCode 4, GitHub Copilot 2, Devin 1 | At low or medium effort the agent cuts corners, misses consequences, follows instructions poorly or makes basic mistakes, so users must redo the work or keep the effort high anyway; complaints about high effort being wasteful are out. |
| Effort level does not behave as labelled | 81 | 85 | OpenAI Codex 45, Claude Code 15, OpenCode 10, Google Antigravity 8, Cursor 1, Devin 1, Pi 1 | The chosen level has little or no visible effect: low or medium still overthinks simple prompts, low or medium shows no reasoning at all, or switching levels changes nothing, which suggests hidden routing or a broken control; cases where the setting is visibly replaced by a different value are out. |

### [Quality got worse or better over time](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.quality_drift.md)

4964 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same model silently degraded after launch | 1485 | 1635 | OpenAI Codex 808, Claude Code 478, Google Antigravity 61, OpenCode 61, Cursor 60, GitHub Copilot 7, Cline 3, Devin 3, Augment Code 1, Factory 1, Pi 1, Warp 1 | The post says a model under the same name and version got dumber, lazier or more error-prone some time after release, using words like 'nerfed', 'lobotomized' or 'great the first week'. Out: a newer version being compared with an older one, and complaints that are only about usage or price. |
| New version regresses from its predecessor | 1164 | 1290 | OpenAI Codex 634, Claude Code 307, Cursor 90, Google Antigravity 84, OpenCode 36, GitHub Copilot 9, Pi 2, Amp 1, Devin 1 | The post says a newer model version or release does worse than the one before it (for example a 6 vs 5.6, or 5 vs 4.8), often adding that the user went back to the older one. Out: one version decaying over time, and comparisons with a competitor's model that never mention an earlier version. |
| Worse quality alongside tighter usage limits | 631 | 673 | OpenAI Codex 434, Claude Code 128, Cursor 31, Google Antigravity 23, OpenCode 8, GitHub Copilot 4, Kiro 2, Devin 1 | The post says quality has dropped while quota, limits or price got worse at the same time, so the user gets less value than in the past. Out: complaints only about limits or price that make no claim about output quality over time. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 3675 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Newest flagship model on the Pro plan

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity it seems that i'm the only one in the world still using antigravity ide. why can't argon be used in the ide yet?” [source](https://twitter.com/984631526980816896/status/2111852939526775290)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity what about of antigravity ide, can you add argon here?” [source](https://twitter.com/1945835400213200897/status/2111783502928576877)

### 2. Restore removed models

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-17, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity bring back 3.1 pro. argon was way too much for some simple task, flash on the other hand was not it for long task” [source](https://twitter.com/941670051060391936/status/2111500033157906638)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “the real problem is not that 4 isn't available in antigravity for pro users, but that 3.1 pro has been removed. there's no model more suitable for planning available unless (i assume) you use a payg api key.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x6gz05/unacceptable_ai_pro_downgrade_antigravity_cli/pgz4ndq/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “3.8 is kind of just... the king of overcomplicating and getting everything wrong. it's pretty annoying imo. 3.7 was pretty dope. would like it back too.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x5yzgi/please_bring_back_gemini_37_flash/pgti28a/)

### 3. Stop silently degrading model quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “i would rather chose not degrading models after launch. what's the point of having "unlimited" like usage if the output is not even comparable anymore when it was launched?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x303a0/what_are_they_planning_for_us/pf7tslm/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs killig it lately guys. i love it. (please dont ever nerf opus 5.5)” [source](https://twitter.com/1598838075458822144/status/2108529236378103883)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-08, r/codex (Reddit): “seriously, dev day was such a joke. hyped up by tibo only to lay an egg with dot after cutting limits in half. dude, f dot and spaces. give us non-nerfed models with privacy and high limits. that’s all i care about.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wzxii9/i_have_to_tell_you_what_resets_really_mean/pemkgsu/)

### 4. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model support

- OpenCode, 2026-10-17, @opencode (X): “@opencode we need dsf4.1 1017! will top up on another plus for that” [source](https://twitter.com/1673923312119074817/status/2111527135353635153)

### 5. Multi-provider model support

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity using only antigravity with gemini it's complicated, we have to use two or three a.i. to get the result..... antigravity it's amazing but again, use sonnet and gpt together” [source](https://twitter.com/1556470074982252547/status/2111786091950874743)
- Amp, 2026-10-16, @AmpCode (X): “hey @ampcode any plans to add junie from jetbrains ai to the model routing?” [source](https://twitter.com/316180959/status/2111144040406397309)
- Cursor, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai @spacexai i have been on the legacy plan, which is more perfect for me. i upgraded my plan and i realized that i could only access composer and grok models, which isn't suits my work at all.” [source](https://twitter.com/1163109596610928641/status/2111080897373946337)

### 6. Honor manually selected model

- Cursor, 2026-10-13, r/cursor (Reddit): “i don't want cursor imposing it's model composer or grok. i need an ability to stick to one i want and comfortable with - sonnet an example.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x4kpoo/no_more_3rd_party_model_usage_via_x_subsciption/pggbb5l/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “the models have different 'personalities', i want absolute control over which i use for what.4.6 ftw.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x350u0/anthropic_this_is_your_chance/pf7vhos/)

### 7. Cheaper lightweight model option

- Kiro, 2026-10-17, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev i guess it’s too pricey. i think we need a lower, faster model, like haiku 5.5. or deepseek 4.1 flash” [source](https://twitter.com/192627237/status/2111261218157830550)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-16, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “6.1 although it's called astra, i hope it has good token efficiency like opus 5.5 and is as capable as 5.6 sol, tibo 🤞 that's astra, and only then will openai regain its top position 💐 #gpt61 #astra #openai #codex #chatgpt [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1578547063318454272/status/2111136833514217573)
- Cursor, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai we want composer 3 and a cheap model at 0.10/0.50 like haiku 5.5.” [source](https://twitter.com/789888781059035136/status/2111077594284134430)

### 8. Keep older models available

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity it would have been better if sonnet 4.6 had remained available on promotional plans even after november 2, offering only 3.8 flash is such a bad decision” [source](https://twitter.com/1292582087426322432/status/2111839388871348707)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i really wish they didn't remove the 3.1 pro model in antigravity. i don't trust the flash models to do any work needing analytical depth, but i don't like the burn rates of argon.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x73yrd/my_thoughts_about_argon_4_in_antigravity_pro_user/ph613iw/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “so they removed 3.1 pro which had decent limits just to give us a tiny argon limit ? i would have preferred to keep 3.1 pro...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x73yrd/my_thoughts_about_argon_4_in_antigravity_pro_user/ph2a6ym/)

### 9. Astra model availability

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-04, r/codex (Reddit): “who the fuck cares about sol ultrafast? most users don’t even have access to ultrafast. we want astra 6.1, instead they seen bent on making users burn usage even faster.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wxk6tj/they_are_completely_out_of_touch_with_what_users/)
- Zed, 2026-09-28, @zeddotdev (X): “@zeddotdev hi, when can i get access to astra and opus 5.5 thanks.” [source](https://twitter.com/1435772434267922438/status/2104627080273293728)
- Kiro, 2026-09-23, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev please kiro, give us what we want: astra, fable, opus 5.5, sol 6, luna 6 !!! pleaseeee” [source](https://twitter.com/1794045418445115392/status/2102796562518933904)

### 10. Opus 5.5 model support

- Amp, 2026-10-10, @AmpCode (X): “@benvargas @____hnsn @ampcode yeah that's my medium mode right now and add opus 5.5 medium for subagents :)” [source](https://twitter.com/1705384263867379712/status/2108794699133903047)

- Pi, 2026-10-04, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “mostly codex (sol 6.1 & astra), occasionally kimi/glm/grok. would love to use opus 5.5. :-(” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wxqvk2/what_model_are_you_using_with_pi/pdwgl9b/)

### 11. Release Gemini 4 / Argon models

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-17, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “continue the good work. we need a proper flash model to pair with argon next!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x7xc0v/wow_argon_is_finally_a_bit_usable_in_pro_now/ph9kq0x/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i think its only good for special cases. lets hope that they release gemini 4 flash and pro sometimes soon so we have good all-rounders, that way argon can be our "6 astra" for super tough tasks.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x73yrd/my_thoughts_about_argon_4_in_antigravity_pro_user/ph1888a/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@rodydavis we urgently want gemini 4 flash @geminiapp @google @antigravity @officiallogank” [source](https://twitter.com/2086871787862708224/status/2110992281771630998)

### 12. Restore previous model version or quality

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-16, r/codex (Reddit): “not a single example audiofile = slop. all we want is the old [link] back or a competitor with the exact same good old models and features and settings updated to modern standarts” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x340s8/codex_is_an_underrated_music_production_tool_ive/ph43xr8/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-15, r/codex (Reddit): “you know what will make me addicted? un-nerfed astra and cheaper price of it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x6h0oh/the_reset_system_literally_rewards_you_for_nuking/pgxa4tl/)
- OpenCode, 2026-10-14, r/opencode (Reddit): “for the last 24-36 hours big pickle was **incredible**! smart, fast. it was like dancing. now is back to how it was 2 days ago: crawls, stops for minutes before even the "thinking". and it's quite dumb. whatever you guys did, go back to yesterday! it was perfect!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1x5cyn5/big_pickle_worked_great_for_36_hours_now_is_back/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “opus at medium exclusively off late. the more clarity you have in your context, prompts and md, the better is opus medium. for me its better than opus high and fable medium both.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8qpr2/opus_55_vs_fable_51_for_ui_and_design/phgup7h/)

- Complaint, 2026-09-15, r/warpdotdev (Reddit): “i chose gpt 5.6 luna xhigh as my model, when it failed, fallback model opus 5 max continued, which rapidly consumes more credits. i can't stand it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/warpdotdev/comments/1oa0abo/warp_dirty_tactics_sonnet_45_thinking_uses_cheap/pa1hdbn/)

### Grok Build

- Praise, 2026-09-24, r/opencodeCLI (Reddit): “[link] from my experience, muse spark 1.3 at xhigh in opencode give me wrong answers all the time. it might flare better with muse code as the model is trained and refined around the harness, the same way grok inside opencode feels dumber compared to when it's inside grok build.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1wopbtv/what_muse_spark_14_contributor_is_already_here/pbswa6q/)
- Praise, 2026-09-10, r/OpenAI (Reddit): “while i love codex, you do have to be delicate with the limits, i see myself using luna a lot more than any other model just to preserve limits i got supergrok, and damn i'm just playing around with grok build, while not as feature rich as codex, for almost the same price, you get grok as your default model which, is sol level quality! with atleast terra level usage and for claude, you atleast get sonnet 5 which is better than luna, tagging it with /advisor is amazing so... sometimes i feel that with codex i'm comprising to make the limits feel better” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenAI/comments/1wc9wzb/switched_from_claude_to_codex_limits_feel_lesser/p8wbu5x/)
