# Usage meter visibility and accuracy (`limits.usage_meter`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/limits.usage_meter

Area: [Paying and limits](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/paying.md)

**Definition.** Whether the product shows how much quota and tokens were used and how much remains, per task and per model, and whether that figure is accurate. Covers meters that climb while idle and hidden token counts.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Pay-as-you-go overage, fallback billing and spend caps](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/billing.overage_charges.md) for money actually charged. Not this: see [Single prompt, model or effort level consumes disproportionate quota](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.burn_rate.md) when the meter is believed and the complaint is the amount consumed.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 2227. Complaint share: 92%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code is the best of the AI coding agents at showing users where their quota went. Its users say the usage command explains what happened and that the agent can break usage down by model. Users rate this often: it is the 14th most rated of 63 criteria, and 92.1% of rated user-weeks are complaints. OpenAI Codex ranks low. Its users describe a meter that falls to zero without use, and they write 53% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

The difference is whether users can trust the meter and get it explained. Claude Code users say the product tells them what happened: its usage command names a likely cause for the last cache miss, and the agent can report how much each model used. OpenAI Codex users describe remaining usage that drops to zero while they are away, or while the agent waits for a reply, with no explanation. Claude Code still draws complaints: 463 of its 537 rated user-weeks are complaints.

  - Claude Code, 2026-10-10, r/cursor (Reddit): “adding to the ttl point: at least claude code tells you what happened. since 2.1.260, /usage names a likely cause for the last cache miss. cursor gives you nothing to diagnose with, so a 3-10% request stays a mystery.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x1r0my/opus_has_become_unusable_with_cursor/pf109dk/)
  - Claude Code, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “maybe subagents? review agents? ask claude, it does pretty good breakdown. it can also tell you how much each model used. it doesn't know about effort level, but that should be ok.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x1qc8a/does_anyone_have_any_idea_why_my_weekly_limit_is/pew686n/)
- **Ranks low**: [OpenAI Codex](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/agents/codex.md)
  - OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-17, r/codex (Reddit): “no. i just had my limit go from 58 to 0 with no use and no explanation. i’m going back to claude.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x7xhjx/moving_from_claude_us200_plan_to_codex_should_i/ph832dj/)
  - OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-18, r/codex (Reddit): “yeah, i had something similar, it asked me for something and i didnt had time and priority to respond. meanwhile watched my usage still go down even tho it was not doing anything at all just waiting for my response.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x98noc/possible_culprit_of_recent_usage_drains/phk545n/)

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a meter that swings without matching the work. It jumps, drops in one step or refills on its own. This makes up 30% of complaining user-weeks, and 80% of it comes from OpenAI Codex users. Most complaints about quota draining while idle also come from them, at 69%. Complaints about missing breakdowns by session, model or token are spread more evenly. Claude Code users raise them most, at 32%.

2057 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meter swings or reverses without matching usage | 607 | 688 | OpenAI Codex 488, Claude Code 91, OpenCode 14, Cursor 11, Amp 1, Google Antigravity 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | The displayed usage or remaining percentage jumps sharply, drops in one step, refills on its own, or bounces back and forth (for example 75% to 4%, or 7% to 57% and back to 6%), and the swing does not match the work the user actually did; slow draining while nothing is running is out. |
| No per-session, per-model, or token breakdown | 395 | 423 | Claude Code 125, OpenAI Codex 105, OpenCode 68, Cursor 44, Google Antigravity 25, GitHub Copilot 11, Devin 7, Factory 4, Amp 3, Pi 3 | The product shows only one combined percentage or pool and hides the detail needed to see what used the quota, such as per-session, per-task, per-model or per-agent usage, input, output and cached token counts, context window size and contents, history over time, or how tokens convert into quota percentage; a total that is visible but inaccurate is out. |
| Meter contradicts enforcement or other usage sources | 362 | 389 | OpenAI Codex 176, Claude Code 88, OpenCode 45, Cursor 18, Google Antigravity 13, Devin 8, Amp 6, GitHub Copilot 3, Cline 1, Factory 1, Pi 1, Warp 1, Zed 1 | The displayed figure disagrees with what actually happens or with another record: the meter shows quota left but the user is blocked, it shows 100% but work goes on, the CLI, dashboard and provider token or cost counts differ, totals are calculated wrong, promised credits never show up, or a stale account's quota is shown; charges booked to the wrong pool are out. |
| Remaining quota and reset times not visible | 300 | 316 | OpenAI Codex 109, Claude Code 82, Cursor 35, OpenCode 30, Google Antigravity 16, Devin 12, Amp 9, Cline 2, GitHub Copilot 2, Zed 2, Augment Code 1 | The product says when a limit has been hit but has no easy, always-visible place to see how much of the 5-hour, weekly, monthly or model-specific quota is left and when it resets (for example, it is buried in settings, missing for some plans or routed subscriptions, or missing reset times), so users build their own widgets; meters that are visible but wrong are out. |
| Quota drains while idle or unused | 241 | 252 | OpenAI Codex 166, Claude Code 46, OpenCode 11, Cursor 10, Google Antigravity 3, Devin 2, Factory 1, Kiro 1, Pi 1 | Usage climbs while no prompts are being run, such as when the app is just left open, the user is browsing, a model the user never turned on gets charged, or usage appears after a reset the user never used; fast draining during real work that the meter tracks correctly is out. |
| Usage charged to the wrong pool or plan | 136 | 144 | OpenAI Codex 54, Cursor 29, Claude Code 19, OpenCode 18, Google Antigravity 6, Devin 5, GitHub Copilot 3, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | Consumption is deducted from or shown under the wrong bucket, such as a free model draining paid subscription meters, regular credits used instead of cloud-session credits, fallback balance charged while plan limits remain, background features counted as user requests, or usage labelled with surfaces or categories the user never used; amounts that are only hidden but counted correctly are out. |
| Other | 95 | 99 | OpenAI Codex 39, Claude Code 27, Cursor 10, OpenCode 7, Google Antigravity 6, Devin 2, Augment Code 1, Cline 1, Factory 1, Warp 1 | Complaints that fit none of the modes above. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 912 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 2. Documented usage calculation

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-18, r/codex (Reddit): “these black box usage rates need to be regulated, who's gonna be the ag that steps up and sues these scumbags?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x8wj35/codex_burning_usage_way_faster_after_reset/phgnocp/)

### 3. Accurate usage meter matching actual consumption

- Cursor, 2026-10-18, @cursor_ai (X): “@m3thaz0o @bot @spacexai @cursor_ai agreed. started using the additional days of downtime for reading. but that usage stuff sorted would be the best upgrade” [source](https://twitter.com/1259483710564511744/status/2111759395012952322)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “what a useless reply. x amount of tokens used should = x % of weekly allowance. that % shouldn’t fluctuate weekly.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x2xak4/very_fast_drain_of_usage_compared_to_last_weeks/pf6h6s6/)

### 4. Context window usage display

- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “please bring back the context usage indicator near the model selector and usage limits. @claudedevs [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2014763041259425792/status/2111321276531044633)

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i just want the context usage to show in the little circle down the bottom back in the web ui. the only way to show it now is a floating elements to the side which feels super janky and distracting, whereas it was perfect before in the usage popup.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x6is2o/claude_code_ui_update/pgw7bby/)

### 5. Cost per completed task metrics

- Cursor, 2026-10-18, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai the $4 input / $20 output pricing makes me want to look past the headline cursorbench score. cost per successfully resolved issue, including retries and tool output, would tell me way more about whether to route an actual coding task to this model.” [source](https://twitter.com/1633831577716396032/status/2111927559843934407)
- Cline, 2026-10-17, @cline (X): “@cline 17x cheaper per token, or per solved task? retries and longer outputs can move those two in opposite directions. dollars per passed terminal-bench task would be the number i'd want to see.” [source](https://twitter.com/2110923886808485888/status/2111458488580972724)
- Cursor, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai 46.1% on cursorbench is at default effort only. same pattern as other muse/api launches: the headline score is not the cost-per-task figure. worth posting cursorbench at higher effort next to the $4/$20 token price.” [source](https://twitter.com/363334482/status/2111056609472577546)

### 6. Show actual token counts, not just percentages

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity tokens .. i want tokensssssssssssssss. 1 prompt = 10%” [source](https://twitter.com/1665098305045422081/status/2110871553760272632)
- Cursor, 2026-10-10, r/ChatGPTCoding (Reddit): “per-reply usage is enough to see a burn. a total that adds up matters when you are billing a run. cursor cli storing no token count is the hole i'd actually care about, because then you can't see the burn after the fact.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPTCoding/comments/1x1rkzl/sessionbench_v1_what_12_coding_harnesses_preserve/pf04zfn/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux in the codex cli, it would be really helpful if it could display the current token consumption as well as the task that is currently being executed. this would allow users to better understand the ongoing status. at the moment, i mostly just see “working.”thank you!” [source](https://twitter.com/2106943549803761664/status/2106954925272084580)

### 7. Per-model usage breakdown and meters

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-17, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity a per-model view of remaining allowance and the exact reset time would help users plan a longer coding session. can those two gemini buckets be checked together before starting a task?” [source](https://twitter.com/1998625138548649984/status/2111435024373547200)

### 8. Per-task and per-step usage breakdown

### 9. Breakdown of what consumes quota

- Cursor, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “and i wasn’t even using top-tier models. i used fucking glm for most of my requests. the usage tracking is completely opaque, making it impossible to understand where all the money goes. the most useless $200 i’ve ever spent. @cursor_ai” [source](https://twitter.com/2913120899/status/2109008845217366139)
- Cursor, 2026-10-07, @cursor_ai (X): “@grok @bot 5/n feature request to @cursor_ai @bot @poteto - could you please either add some usage details (ideally something that's programmatically accessible from within the grok bot) or at least give user hints on what might be wasteful. right now we're flying blind.” [source](https://twitter.com/7619212/status/2107958384914059697)
- Cursor, 2026-10-06, @cursor_ai (X): “why is my @bot consuming so fast my @cursor_ai ultra sub? how can i check where my tokens are going? in only 2 days i have drained pretty much all my sub and the cursor models tokens not the premium ones” [source](https://twitter.com/544365031/status/2107585105279746063)

### 10. Usage shown in dollar value

- Amp, 2026-10-16, @AmpCode (X): “if not too much clutter could we show the prices of orbs here gentlemen? perhaps on hover? @sqs @nicolaygerold @puckofamp @ampcode [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/89691524/status/2111113126666186913)
- Factory, 2026-10-12, @droid (X): “the trade off is, it runs extremely slow. i am afraid of the cost is not cheap. maybe we could add a cost for mission mode so we can see cost every times a mission is done? @droid” [source](https://twitter.com/1518742213936570368/status/2109462194396225972)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-30, r/codex (Reddit): “how much does 62,500 credits ordinarily cost? codex app won't display the prices for me. ask chatgpt and it says it's worth $2,500.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wsijqb/codex_usage_and_operation_discussion_last_updated/pczmzlt/)

### 11. More detailed usage analytics dashboards

- Cursor, 2026-10-15, @cursor_ai (X): “@tukiyomiiori @grok some are usable now, some are not, and i really can't see the bill, it's just speechless @elonmusk @grok @cursor_ai @bot [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2079220699932340224/status/2110576525657661514)

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity add heatmaps that shows us our token and credit usage and also how many projects we have worked and also introduce an antigravity pet” [source](https://twitter.com/1241359410938576901/status/2107426612119769096)

### 12. Per-session usage breakdown and logs

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “i like it! for github-copilot license i am used to tokenyst extension. yours is great for codex, the only thing i am missing or overlooking is the session cost history.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1utevw2/vs_code_extension_to_track_codex_claude_code/pf9qte5/)
- Cursor, 2026-10-11, r/ChatGPTCoding (Reddit): “agreed. a missing total is an audit problem. no count at all means the cost of a run cannot be recovered from the file afterwards. cursor cli is the only one of the twelve with nothing.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPTCoding/comments/1x1rkzl/sessionbench_v1_what_12_coding_harnesses_preserve/pf9oked/)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-10, r/cursor (Reddit): “adding to the ttl point: at least claude code tells you what happened. since 2.1.260, /usage names a likely cause for the last cache miss. cursor gives you nothing to diagnose with, so a 3-10% request stays a mystery.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x1r0my/opus_has_become_unusable_with_cursor/pf109dk/)
- Praise, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “maybe subagents? review agents? ask claude, it does pretty good breakdown. it can also tell you how much each model used. it doesn't know about effort level, but that should be ok.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x1qc8a/does_anyone_have_any_idea_why_my_weekly_limit_is/pew686n/)
