# Single prompt, model or effort level consumes disproportionate quota (`limits.burn_rate`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/limits.burn_rate

Area: [Paying and limits](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/paying.md)

**Definition.** How much quota a specific prompt, task, model version, effort level or feature consumes for the work done. Includes new versions using more than earlier ones and praise for efficient ones. The post names what consumed the quota.

**Boundary.** Not this: see [Short rolling usage window blocks or interrupts work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.window_interrupts_work.md) when the post is about being blocked by the short window, not about the consumer. Not this: see [Prompt cache hits, misses and invalidation](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/limits.prompt_cache.md) for cache misses. Not this: see [Subagents, parallel agents and orchestrators](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.multi_agent_orchestration.md) when runaway subagents cause the burn.

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 13190. Complaint share: 82%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi is the best coding agent at making quota last. Its users say it saves tokens and lets them get a lot done. Devin, Factory, GitHub Copilot and Claude Code also rank high, and their users describe cheap or efficient models that stretch a plan. Quota burn is the 3rd most rated thing about coding agents, and most of those ratings are complaints. Google Antigravity ranks last and Cursor 11th of 12. OpenAI Codex also ranks low. Its users rate quota burn 2.49 times as often as other users and write 52% of the category's complaints here.

### What separates the best from the rest

Users of the leading agents describe controlling where the quota goes. On Factory and Claude Code, users say a cheap model does routine work and an expensive model plans or directs. GitHub Copilot users say a cheap model is good enough to use by default. Pi users say the agent itself uses few tokens. Users of the trailing agents describe losing control. On Google Antigravity, Cursor and Kiro, users say one prompt or small task uses a large share of a limit. OpenAI Codex users say one model version uses more quota than another for the same tasks.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure mode is a flagship model using up a plan's allowance within minutes or hours. It makes up 17% of complaining user-weeks. OpenAI Codex users write the largest share of every mode except context size. That includes 74% of complaints that a low effort setting saves no quota. Claude Code's largest share is in hidden spend from subagents and parallel sessions, where its users write 39%.

11194 complaining user-weeks.

#### Subagents and parallel sessions multiply hidden spend

- Claude Code, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i've never burned 50% of my 5x in one day before during normal use. it's really easy to do if i enable workflows but workflows is disabled. i'm thinking this has to do with the new sub-sessions (nested sessions) they added.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x9au2z/tokens_burning_fast/phjsedm/)

#### Context size and extras inflate per-turn cost

- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “yeah exactly, and the skill made it worse in this case. 5 calls instead of 1, and each one re-read the prompt plus the skill's own instructions. so it wrote less but read way more” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8ku98/does_an_answer_with_html_skill_actually_save/phdwxz2/)

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 675 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Lower overall quota burn per prompt and task

- Devin, 2026-10-18, @cognition (X): “@cognition devin is the best coding agent by a mile if only we had a better way to manage the token usage and last the weekly budget on 200$ more than 2 days.” [source](https://twitter.com/2111482510710636544/status/2111686437502685602)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity fix the goddamn usage limit first, even flash on low is eating usage like hell, a complex prompt literally eating upto 5-8%.” [source](https://twitter.com/1377638196528304133/status/2110923290856538365)
- Cline, 2026-10-15, @cline (X): “@officiallogank @cline it’s being consumed way too fast! i’m almost afraid to use it anymore—just two questions and the balance is nearly gone! users are asking: is there any way to fix or improve this?” [source](https://twitter.com/1149911490088054784/status/2110653359590133965)

### 2. Lower subagent token overhead

- Claude Code, 2026-10-15, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@addyosmani @joshua_wd @claudedevs as a start 🧵: - projects. using a main thread with sub-agents is just too token consuming, and i don’t want to be fiddling around with subagents configs for compaction and context.” [source](https://twitter.com/2515913323/status/2110709250548773072)
- Pi, 2026-10-11, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “love the idea of minimizing token bloat. will give it a try as i am looking for a solution for subagents that works well with local model with limited context window. a lot of popular pi extensions are too bloated and did not work for me.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x3b00i/pimultiagentskill_minimalist_subagents_approach/pf9m13n/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “ate through my 5 hour limit in minutes cause claude decided to spawn 8 sub agents in parallel and told each one to read my entire second brain front to back. was like 19m tokens in total while i took a piss.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x2h2u4/opus_55_spawned_17_subagents/pf5g8sa/)

### 3. Fix sudden excessive usage drain bugs

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-18, r/codex (Reddit): “another reset is fine for pro accounts, but on plus we also need this bug fixed asap because it burns through 5 hour limit in one message sometimes and we can't do anything.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x96a0v/burning_through_usage_fast/phkbrbq/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs but your tokens burns faster now using 20x burned out my 20x on 2 days, before i was able to use my 20x for 7days. please resolve this” [source](https://twitter.com/1476604466149404680/status/2111596233177350253)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity my brothers in christ i have burned up 95% of my weekly usage in ~2 hours. please do something about this.” [source](https://twitter.com/1703678095/status/2111116651483557961)

### 4. Lower quota cost for simple tasks

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-07, r/codex (Reddit): “facing similar issue , just for simple task luna 6 drank up my limits like just adding another component used 20% of my 5 hour limit in 5 minutes wtf” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wzssed/mcps_using_up_a_lot_more_usage_than_normal_on_gpt/peefwmv/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “i used it to catch all the faked testing flash just loves to do. burned through usage in about an hour of what i consider light use on a 20x plan. i can't wait for 4 to come out ffs.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wwfcav/google_finally_added_opus_55_and_sonnet_55_on/peaq4rs/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-04, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “a code review prompt asking for 3 recommendations for improvements for a simple web app used up 50% of the 5 hour limit and 25% of the weekly limit.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1wx3vxk/hows_the_opus_55_high_usage_on_ai_pro/pdqcr47/)

### 5. Slow mode for more usage

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-13, r/codex (Reddit): “i would not mind a slower mode. i have some things swirling in the background so those can take time. 50% less consumption but slower speed would still net me in the long term.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x4p9tx/tobo_said_extra_usage/pgfx4c4/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, r/codex (Reddit): “they should just allow an opt in slow mode. 2x usage for 1/2 speed. i'd use it” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x3nzj3/we_all_are_tibo/pfdbui4/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/codex (Reddit): “they need to give 4x option or reduced credit cost for off-peak usage. they are modeling peak bandwidth compute delivery and the smoothest solution is to promote off-peak to shift compute demand across the full 24 hour window.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1x303a0/what_are_they_planning_for_us/pfawhs1/)

### 6. New model versions should not use more quota

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-11, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “dude compared to old models new ones take more tokens comparatively mine token got somehow exhausted for full month” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1x34h9c/google_pro_users_from_jio_subscription_any_other/pf8kfqa/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-05, r/GoogleAntigravityIDE (Reddit): “the transition from 3.7 to 3.8 for the rate limit has huge differences ! 3.8 rates are too low and quickly caped !! i find myself going back to 3.7 frequently because it doesn’t consume token much” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAntigravityIDE/comments/1wy4cgu/are_google_ai_pro_rate_limits_enough_for/pe223k8/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-30, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux fix voice calls, please organize the codex app.. it's a mess right now. have dot be our orchestrator but spawn side chats so we can keep roles in those chats :c don't touch 6.1 sol usage for the love of god” [source](https://twitter.com/57659988/status/2105349966231421046)

### 7. Lower quota cost of specific named models

- Kiro, 2026-10-17, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev with 2.4 ?! why !!!!! who use this? :d)))))))))” [source](https://twitter.com/2063668016995336193/status/2111395644296376438)
- Kiro, 2026-10-16, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev damn 2.4? gesh. why? no way i would use this over opus 5.5” [source](https://twitter.com/1873553620379025408/status/2111224333448405219)
- Kiro, 2026-10-16, @kirodotdev (X): “@kirodotdev bruh, at 2.4x multiplier 💀 while opus 5.5 is available at 2x multiplier” [source](https://twitter.com/1543880323749990400/status/2111168619359150382)

### 8. Proportionate quota cost across reasoning effort levels

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “this is completely true and it is not worth it if i use medium level and my weekly limit is below 50% and it just reseted yesterday [link] they seriously need to fix this” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x6gz05/unacceptable_ai_pro_downgrade_antigravity_cli/pgvgq3j/)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-05, r/codex (Reddit): “that’s cool, i’ve had fable on ultra going all night on 3 projects and only used 40% of my weekly usage on the $200 plan. on my $200 plan astra on xhigh would have used all my weekly by morning. openai needs to do better.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wyehd5/day_1_tibo/pe23l4j/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i'm using low and medium but my weekly usage is still getting consumed very rapidly even though i don't use any skill and use fixed prompts. the context window gets quite big too within minutes. any optimizations tips are appreciated.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wxgdol/what_effort_are_you_running_opus_55/pdt5ymz/)

### 9. Lower quota burn of top-tier models

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “yea id rather be able to use it without tanking my entire usage and then just having to wait for it to come back up” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x7bkfx/finally_its_here_but/ph4evp4/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i agree. i tried haiku 5.5 xhigh to replace opus 5.5 medium but haiku is unsable (it does not follow instructions). opus eats the usage immediately. i am in max 5x. i was in 20x and i don't think it is a lot better.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x2xak4/very_fast_drain_of_usage_compared_to_last_weeks/pf6buq5/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-10, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i’ve been using sonnet to test and holy shit zero diff between opus and i have 10 going at once and was only at 30% of my week. opus over night added 30% usage to my total.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x2j3w6/weekly_limit_cut_in_half/pf2tuoh/)

### 10. More token-efficient agent harness

- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs i cant wait for claude to discover diffs. "hey guys, maybe we dont have to send the whole conversation at every iteration", we can send what changed"” [source](https://twitter.com/1858686241363161088/status/2111439281755406595)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs speed compounds in agentic loops — 3x matters. but faster plumbing doesn't fix the deeper waste: every turn still ships the whole conversation. real win is only sending diffs. that's the harness thesis behind [link].” [source](https://twitter.com/71419057/status/2111428765754552479)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-08, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “haiku 5.5 is the cheap model. this is a discussion about the bloated system prompt loading a lot of unnecessary tools. if you don't comprehend the topic of conversation then perhaps you should fanboi somewhere else.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x0fli2/claude_code_66k_system_prompt/pekc5k0/)

### 11. Stop wasteful background polling

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-02, r/codex (Reddit): “up to 28 now… still abysmal. i say shut off dots and give us our compute power back.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wvi37e/for_now_gpt_61_sol_is_an_absolute_gem/pdcwqly/)
- Amp, 2026-09-30, @AmpCode (X): “@mxstbr @ampcode any chance of supporting this? would love for this to stop the token burn / context filling when waiting for ci to finish” [source](https://twitter.com/583047714/status/2105349514894737581)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-09-29, r/codex (Reddit): “crazy work. at 50% api prices thats near a 75% decrease in usage for the plans. unless they drastically decrease api prices this is awful especially since they havn't fixed the stupid usage drain from pointless polling of subagents” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wt2y1g/200_pro_plan_returning_at_less_than_20x_tibo/pcqsp7w/)

### 12. Higher usage limits for heavy models

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-16, @antigravity (X): “@antigravity ok, now increase the limits. i tested a code of 200 lines and it consumed 32% of my quota. ridiculous. even flash had its quota reduced.” [source](https://twitter.com/456660458/status/2111034257090969628)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-04, @antigravity (X): “the opus 5.5 (medium) quota in @antigravity exhausted in like 2 minutes... wish we could get more [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/138798236/status/2106820890017288598)
- Devin, 2026-10-04, @cognition (X): “between vibe and code i chose chaos @devindevelopers @devinai @cognition pls make sure your unlimited swe 2 until october 18 has enough compute for me. it's an amazing model at backend. already 3 days task btw, still running [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1825243355501973504/status/2106624311813410934)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-10-06, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev @earendilworks solved this with codemode: one js script instead of n tool calls. i liked it so much i brought it to claude code — v0.1.0 is out. measured: a 5-file read task went 7→2 turns, ~40% cheaper. - Praise, 2026-10-17, @cognition (X): “@gaur114515 @devinai @cognition @devindevelopers i just run it... just use swe high with opus 5.5 it burns so slow unless you run 3-4 tasks at a timr” [source](https://twitter.com/1825243355501973504/status/2111505396619674037)
- Praise, 2026-10-17, @DevinAI (X): “@anurag_barl @devinai i feel you man but hey! the swe2 promo is going until the end of this month and 75% discount is also there for gemini 4 argon. and gpt 6.1 sol is pretty nice and efficent in devin too!” [source](https://twitter.com/1810175539053006848/status/2111597720670793936)
- Complaint, 2026-10-17, @cognition (X): “@dabit3 @cognition devin cloud with macos is my go to alternative when for remote building. however, i noticed that for every minutes that the vm is live, it consumes much tokens, and more tokens consumption when it triggered child sessions when the more vm are being used.” [source](https://twitter.com/1994170271201415170/status/2111269191613641012)

- Complaint, 2026-09-30, r/windsurf (Reddit): “by the way depending on what model you pick in wind surf you can burn up a week’s tokens in an hour or less. run free models and you can keep building but augment that with unsloth studio if you can.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/windsurf/comments/1wts7vu/reached_free_model_rate_limit_upgrade_to_max_for/pcy64fy/)

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “you can now run ultracode at any effort level. i use it on high effort and get a week of nearly continuous usage. i use it to build software and perform research tasks.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x7v5cb/opus_55_ultracode_effort_worth_it_or_my_max5x/ph80up6/)

### Amp

- Praise, 2026-09-14, @AmpCode (X): “i am convinced that for some reason the chatgpt desktop app chews tokens because i've been rolling @ampcode all afternoon with sol/astra and have only used like 4% from 50% starting. something is sussy but i guess this is why i prefer using ampcode more and more everyday.” [source](https://twitter.com/22610703/status/2099432538146254876)
- Praise, 2026-09-14, @AmpCode (X): “sol consumes more than astra according to their benchmarks. astra orchestrating luna xhigh is the most you can squeeze out of the sub. usage of the sub through @ampcode goes almost as long but way higher quality than luna, they have some secret sauce. astra medium is the third best for out of the box task completed vs sub consumed.” [source](https://twitter.com/4186365072/status/2099541807998603771)

### Kiro

- Praise, 2026-10-11, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “i just don't use opus ever. i'm on luna for all i need to do for work and it's been fine. i like to have control and review, and so a step at a time and it's quick enough that i'm not waiting around for more than 2-3 min max each time. no issues with eating credits of course.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1x31rk1/am_i_using_kiro_wrong_or_does_it_feel_painful_to/pf80dmg/)
- Praise, 2026-08-31, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “compared to other tools such as copilot, kiro uses up credits relatively slowly (and yes, i mean credits per cost). of course, where possible, you should try to optimise your llm usage a little, avoid unnecessary context, etc., but depending on what you’re doing and which model you’re using, this level of consumption may be normal.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1vz8tk7/kiro_is_guzzling_credits_1k_in_two_days/p71rhqd/)

### Warp

- Praise, 2026-09-04, @warpdotdev (X): “interesting picked the same 3 models for a project in warp factory and avg pr cost was around 30 to 50 % lower. now half way trough the project and doing a optimization run first before more project work items see if we can get that number lower. so far really happy with the factory preview 👌” [source](https://twitter.com/141649554/status/2095943106507973029)

### Augment Code
