# Instructing and context (`context`)

Feedback Bench, coding agents, built 2026-10-19, window 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18. Web page: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/criterion/context

Area of 8 criteria. Does it follow your instructions and keep the right context?

Criteria: [Persistent project rules files are read and obeyed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.instruction_files.md), [Direct in-prompt instructions and caps are followed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.instruction_following.md), [Asks the user versus guessing](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.clarifying_questions.md), [Output degrades as the context window fills](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.long_context_decay.md), [Context compaction keeps what matters, cheaply and quickly](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.compaction.md), [Memory and state carried across sessions](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.session_memory.md), [Finding the right files in the codebase](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.codebase_retrieval.md), [Images, PDFs and file attachments as input](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.attachments.md)

Rated user-weeks, all agents: 7094. Complaint share: 64%.

## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Claude Code leads on instructions and context, followed by Pi. Claude Code's lead holds on every criterion where agents separate. It ranks high on compaction, memory across sessions, finding files and reading images. Pi ranks high on compaction and memory, OpenCode on memory, Cursor on finding files. On following instructions, following project rules, staying sharp in long sessions and asking when unsure, no agent ranks high or low. Google Antigravity is 11th of 11 and ranks low on four criteria. OpenAI Codex ranks low on compaction and memory but high on reading images. Claude Code users rate this area more often than other users and write 41% of its complaints.

## How it breaks

Rule: A separate pass sorts complaints into failure modes. For each criterion with at least 30 complaining user-weeks, a large language model reads 150 complaint posts drawn at random and names 4 to 8 failure modes; a second large language model then puts every complaint post on that criterion in one mode, or in Other when it fits none. Modes are fixed once named, and new posts are sorted into them each week. A mode counts distinct user-weeks with a complaint in it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Modes do not change the labels or the Feedback Score. Examples: up to 3 posts per mode from different users, chosen and checked as receipts are.

The largest failure is reasoning that gets worse once a session grows long. It appears in 313 user-weeks, and Claude Code users account for 49% of them. Next come compaction summaries that drop decisions and goals, led by Claude Code users. OpenAI Codex users lead the next two: breaking an explicit prohibition mid-task, and silently skipping parts of a prompt or plan, where they account for 50%. Almost every large failure comes mainly from these two agents' users.

### [Persistent project rules files are read and obeyed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.instruction_files.md)

621 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit rule-file directives ignored during work | 199 | 208 | Claude Code 103, OpenAI Codex 49, Cursor 21, Google Antigravity 13, OpenCode 6, GitHub Copilot 4, Pi 2, Devin 1 | The agent loads the project or user rules file, but its actions or output still break a specific stated rule (comment style, no over-engineering, ask-before-acting, required libraries, link formats); cases where the file was never loaded are excluded. |
| Instruction files silently not discovered or loaded | 89 | 95 | Claude Code 44, OpenAI Codex 22, Google Antigravity 7, Cursor 7, GitHub Copilot 4, OpenCode 3, Pi 1, Zed 1 | The rules file never enters context because of file naming (agents vs claude md, symlinks), nested-directory or path-scoped rules not loading, the working directory, settings-scope limits, or A/B changes, and nothing tells the user; cases where the file loaded but was disobeyed are excluded. |
| Instruction file context bloat and token cost | 87 | 93 | Claude Code 45, OpenAI Codex 21, Cursor 7, Google Antigravity 6, OpenCode 3, Pi 3, Devin 1, Kiro 1 | Large rule, memory, or system-prompt content that cannot be edited is loaded every turn, using up tokens and context and crowding out relevant instructions; complaints only about obedience with no cost or size issue are excluded. |

### [Direct in-prompt instructions and caps are followed](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.instruction_following.md)

1430 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit prohibition violated during task | 231 | 233 | OpenAI Codex 83, Claude Code 77, Google Antigravity 32, Cursor 18, OpenCode 12, Pi 4, GitHub Copilot 3, Devin 2 | The agent does something the current prompt plainly forbade, such as committing with itself as co-author, running a migration, calling forbidden APIs or scripts, spawning extra servers, or deleting files. This covers only prohibitions given in the session; ignored standing rules in config files and wrong output format belong to other modes. |
| Parts of prompt or plan silently skipped | 224 | 235 | OpenAI Codex 113, Claude Code 63, OpenCode 21, Google Antigravity 18, Cursor 6, GitHub Copilot 2, Amp 1 | The agent carries out only part of a multi-part prompt, an agreed plan or a design spec, drops required steps, checks or details, or stops early despite being told to continue, and still reports the work as done. Swapping in a different approach is out. |
| Standing rule files ignored or forgotten | 206 | 216 | Claude Code 95, OpenAI Codex 63, Google Antigravity 23, Cursor 10, OpenCode 7, GitHub Copilot 4, Pi 2, Amp 1, Cline 1 | The agent fails to apply persistent instructions from agents.md, claude.md, global rules, skills or memories, either from the start or after a few turns of a session (for example pushing to main or switching package managers against the rules). Instructions given only in the current prompt are out. |

### [Asks the user versus guessing](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.clarifying_questions.md)

195 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guessing through ambiguous requirements instead of asking | 68 | 68 | Claude Code 29, OpenAI Codex 23, Google Antigravity 7, OpenCode 5, Cursor 3, Amp 1 | The agent meets a vague or underspecified request, or an open product or design decision (which algorithm, what 'improved' means, cache freshness), and quietly picks an interpretation and builds it instead of raising the question; this does not cover being blocked by missing access or files, which is a separate mode. |
| Unnecessary questions on clear or discoverable matters | 48 | 49 | OpenAI Codex 22, Claude Code 18, OpenCode 3, Cursor 2, Google Antigravity 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Pi 1 | The agent stops to ask about things the task already settles, things it could check itself in the repo or environment, obvious yes/no confirmations, unlikely edge cases, or details the user has already answered, which stalls the work; this does not cover questions that are needed but badly worded. |
| Poorly framed or unanswerable clarification prompts | 27 | 28 | Claude Code 13, OpenAI Codex 8, Amp 1, Google Antigravity 1, Cline 1, Cursor 1, OpenCode 1, Pi 1 | When the agent does ask, the question has no context, offers absurd or loaded options, won't take a free-text answer or follow-up discussion, or is buried in long prose where the user misses it; this does not cover whether asking was justified in the first place. |

### [Output degrades as the context window fills](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.long_context_decay.md)

859 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning quality drops past a context threshold | 313 | 324 | Claude Code 152, OpenAI Codex 84, OpenCode 30, Google Antigravity 25, Cursor 10, Pi 4, Amp 2, GitHub Copilot 2, Cline 1, Devin 1, Factory 1, Kiro 1 | Once context fills past some point (users often cite 100k–400k tokens or about half the window), the agent gets noticeably less capable overall: lazier, sloppier, more hallucinations, flailing on simple tasks, or getting stuck in test/fail loops, even with no single identifiable forgotten fact; this excludes poor quality that also shows up in fresh short sessions. |
| Agent forgets its own progress and plan | 174 | 176 | Claude Code 78, OpenAI Codex 57, Google Antigravity 18, OpenCode 10, Cursor 6, Devin 2, Amp 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Pi 1 | Deep into a long session the agent loses track of work it has already done, plans or specs it wrote itself, or tools it has already used, so it repeats steps, causes regressions, drifts from the spec or denies it can do things; this excludes forgetting user-given rules and forgetting between separate sessions. |
| Long sessions slow, error out or loop | 119 | 122 | Claude Code 36, OpenAI Codex 33, OpenCode 27, Google Antigravity 11, Pi 6, Cursor 3, Devin 1, Factory 1, Warp 1 | As context grows very large the agent or its interface slows to a crawl, hits request failures or context-overflow errors that throw away the work, or starts glitching and repeating its output; this excludes slowness or errors that also happen in short sessions and complaints that are only about the advertised window size. |

### [Context compaction keeps what matters, cheaply and quickly](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.compaction.md)

939 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summary drops decisions, goals and progress | 235 | 260 | Claude Code 118, OpenAI Codex 71, OpenCode 17, Pi 10, Google Antigravity 7, Cursor 6, Cline 2, GitHub Copilot 2, Amp 1, Kiro 1 | After compaction the agent has lost task goals, todos, instructions, prior decisions or which steps already ran, so it drifts, repeats work or goes off track; this excludes cost, speed and outright compaction errors. |
| Compaction burns excessive tokens or quota | 181 | 205 | Claude Code 115, OpenAI Codex 54, OpenCode 5, Google Antigravity 2, Pi 2, Cline 1, Cursor 1, Devin 1 | A single compaction, or the file re-reads that follow it, eats a large share of usage limits or money, often because the cache is missed or expired; this excludes the general cost of keeping a large context that never gets compacted. |
| Compaction triggers too often or too early | 159 | 171 | OpenAI Codex 77, Claude Code 37, OpenCode 22, Google Antigravity 11, Pi 4, Zed 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Cursor 2, Kiro 1 | Auto-compaction fires every few messages, well below the context limit, on idle sessions, or in the middle of a single prompt or subagent report; this excludes complaints about what the summary keeps. |

### [Memory and state carried across sessions](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.session_memory.md)

677 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New sessions start from zero | 211 | 226 | Claude Code 113, OpenAI Codex 45, Cursor 22, Google Antigravity 11, OpenCode 6, Pi 5, Amp 2, Cline 2, Devin 2, Conductor 1, Factory 1, Grok Build 1 | A fresh or resumed session has none of the earlier project context, so the agent re-explores the codebase, asks again for facts or decisions already given, or repeats investigations and failed fixes, costing tokens and time; this covers missing continuity inside one tool, not loss across different tools (see the next mode) or history that was deleted. |
| Context does not carry across tools or devices | 133 | 142 | Claude Code 59, OpenAI Codex 37, Cursor 20, Google Antigravity 13, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Factory 1, Pi 1 | Decisions, rules and task state stay locked inside one agent, surface or machine (e.g. a CLI agent vs. a chat app, one editor vs. another, laptop vs. desktop), so the user has to copy context by hand or re-explain it when switching; this excludes forgetting inside a single tool. |
| Stale or junk memories degrade output | 126 | 142 | Claude Code 80, OpenAI Codex 25, Cursor 6, Devin 5, OpenCode 4, Pi 3, Google Antigravity 1, GitHub Copilot 1, Kiro 1 | The memory system saves irrelevant, overcorrecting or outdated entries (or handoff files go stale without expiry dates) that the agent then trusts as current, so output gets worse and the user has to prune entries or turn memory off; this excludes correct memories that were ignored. |

### [Finding the right files in the codebase](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.codebase_retrieval.md)

373 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over-reading the repository on small tasks | 80 | 85 | Google Antigravity 26, Claude Code 18, OpenAI Codex 14, Cursor 7, OpenCode 6, Pi 4, Cline 3, GitHub Copilot 1, Zed 1 | The agent reads far more files, or much bigger files, than a small or narrow task needs: scanning whole directories, dumping huge files, generated files or build logs into context, or running floods of ls/grep calls, which burns tokens and context; repeat reads of content it already has belong to the re-reading mode. |
| Skipping code needed for the task | 68 | 71 | Claude Code 32, OpenAI Codex 22, Google Antigravity 5, OpenCode 4, Cursor 2, Cline 1, Conductor 1, GitHub Copilot 1 | The agent reads too little, for example a few lines through truncated reads or none at all, and then guesses, missing existing helpers, patterns, earlier decisions or relevant files, so it gives wrong answers or duplicates code; reading too much is out. |
| Repository not reachable or not indexed | 57 | 57 | OpenAI Codex 21, Claude Code 12, Cursor 11, Google Antigravity 3, OpenCode 3, GitHub Copilot 2, Devin 2, Amp 1, Pi 1, Zed 1 | The agent or product cannot see the user's code at all or sees only part of it: the web chat has no repo access, GitHub sync is missing, the repo is over the size limit, indexing stalls, file tools fail on WSL or local paths, folders are invisible, or multiple repos are not supported; poor search choices when access works are out. |

### [Images, PDFs and file attachments as input](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.attachments.md)

178 complaining user-weeks.

| Failure mode | User-weeks | Posts | Agents (user-weeks) | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drag-and-drop or upload of files fails | 36 | 36 | Google Antigravity 12, Claude Code 9, Cursor 6, OpenAI Codex 4, OpenCode 4, Amp 1 | Dragging, dropping, picking or uploading a file into the chat does nothing, hangs, errors, or works only intermittently, even though the product claims to support it; this excludes file types the product never claims to accept. |
| Poor understanding of attached visuals | 28 | 30 | OpenAI Codex 13, Claude Code 9, Google Antigravity 2, OpenCode 2, Cline 1, Cursor 1 | The model reads the image or document but gets it wrong: it hallucinates objects, misreads text, misses visual bugs, or infers instead of transcribing from PDFs and tables; this excludes cases where the content never reached the model. |
| Attachment type not accepted | 27 | 31 | Google Antigravity 16, OpenCode 5, OpenAI Codex 2, Pi 2, Claude Code 1, Zed 1 | The product refuses whole input kinds the user needs, such as video, audio, PDF, SVG, zip, markdown/HTML, plain-text extensions or linked cloud documents, or turns them into a crude substitute like extracted frames or text; it excludes cases where the type is supported but the upload breaks. |

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 1272 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Built-in persistent memory across sessions

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs faster turns are great. the next speed-up is the human one: starting a session already knowing the role, the stack and the house rules. less re-explaining every morning, more shipping.” [source](https://twitter.com/2110806845271027712/status/2111222276242706684)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “persistent context (doesn't disappear after finished task), i believe, and the ability to "talk" between them.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x2k7dz/if_you_dont_have_access_to_claude_code_projects/pf5n4xc/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-11, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs make "projects" a long-term conversation, the real value is that the context no longer needs to be repeated every time. the key is how it handles conflicts and expiration of cross-session memory.” [source](https://twitter.com/1038483863360557056/status/2109103293469192510)

### 2. Search past conversations

- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-18, @antigravity (X): “@yourgolddwarf @_mohansolo @antigravity the real issue isn’t open source it’s workflow friction. incremental history search should be table stakes for agent clis; good ux means fewer context switches, not more panels.” [source](https://twitter.com/2063704441619140608/status/2111738892634542525)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-17, @ClaudeDevs (X): “i really dislike starting new chat threads for ai agents. there should just be one continuous interaction that remembers your full history and automatically retrieves relevant context when needed. please build this @trq212 @claudedevs @claudeai @anthropicai #only_one_chat” [source](https://twitter.com/1412083790005129220/status/2111502938816631223)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-15, r/google_antigravity (Reddit): “why are we still only with cross conversation read and no cross conversation write yet? this is necessary for having more management for context and workflows and so on” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/google_antigravity/comments/1x6w4dx/antigravity_app_releases_v2220_v2231/pgz6j9t/)

### 3. Larger context window

- Cursor, 2026-10-16, @cursor_ai (X): “@cursor_ai @leerob any chance to set 500k default context in grok 4.7 model on cursor with no 2x pricing? 🙏” [source](https://twitter.com/1524828212081074176/status/2111209647122305390)

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-12, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux tibo, did you overlook the codex cli users? i carefully checked the model cache, and the context size is still 272k.” [source](https://twitter.com/1911983254632292352/status/2109668509303373936)

### 4. Reliable adherence to explicit user instructions

- Claude Code, 2026-10-09, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i'm curious, how should we handle cases where you explicitly tell claude three times what to do, but it still ignores all the instructions and messes things up? can we consider that behavior offensive?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x1o1ev/what_is_happening/pew8k94/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-05, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “exactly why i dont trust the thing. fucking machine should do as its told.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wxex89/when_did_claude_stop_being_an_assistant_and_start/pe01h91/)
- Claude Code, 2026-09-29, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “what the hell are you on about? i'm not going to run claude on a container. it was given specific instructions and dev boxes. it was supposed to honor those instructions. simple as that.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wt0qmb/opus_55_max_deleted_my_entire_wsl_home_directory/pcq969o/)

### 5. Reliable adherence to rules files

- OpenCode, 2026-10-05, r/opencode (Reddit): “[link] should i need to rotate my credential it look fishy that it read .env even in [agents.md]([link]) i have say never read .env” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wy493j/space_bunny_read_my_credential/)
- Cursor, 2026-10-04, r/cursor (Reddit): “i already use the hooks and rules. i'll look into bugbot. i agree on context and harness engineering. the problem is that cursor's models simply choose to ignore the context be it in the prompt, a skill or plan. the harness also often ignores hooks and rules.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1wxkg3e/cursor_no_longer_developer_tool_now_for_vibecoders/pdv8g1h/)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i have the opposite problem: claude regularly forgets the rules which are pushes are always to a feature branch off of develop. it still tries to push to main once a week.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wxi3yd/claude_code_when_you_ask_it_to_push_to_main/pduoadi/)

### 6. Automatic session handoff summaries

- Claude Code, 2026-10-16, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “it causes information loss and possible regressions for the new sessions. modify it to make it comphrensive” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x776ms/auto_handoff_are_the_best_new_feature/ph285mn/)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity hi 👋, just came across an issue - when you delete a worktree in git, you have no choice than to delete the associated "chat". it would be nice to have an option to transfer the context to another worktree.” [source](https://twitter.com/1471445151423868932/status/2107512997728153865)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-01, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “a handover skill with plan mode + clear context is honestly extremely underrated. kilo code actually pioneered this. not sure why claude code (cc) hasn't implemented this yet. cc native compact is lossy and vague, and should be phased out altogether.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wv9jxk/nerf_fixed/pd9ztbx/)

### 7. Instructions persist through long sessions

- Cursor, 2026-10-03, @cursor_ai (X): “@openai: we need a way to create plan documents as first-class citizens in codex. context rot erodes our ability to effectively build and maintain a long-term plan over a long session. that's something you could learn from the folks at @cursor_ai.” [source](https://twitter.com/15487120/status/2106490818295152642)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-03, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs the useful version flags the constraint claude dropped three turns ago in a tool log, not a restatement of the last paragraph.” [source](https://twitter.com/1667827210328363008/status/2106193213912739948)

### 8. Compaction preserves critical task context

- Claude Code, 2026-10-08, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs haiku doing compactions is the part i'd watch. if the summary quietly drops one constraint, opus inherits the wrong premise and builds on it with full confidence. can you pin what a compaction must keep, or is it all up to the summarizer?” [source](https://twitter.com/1486209719740289024/status/2108000144100581627)
- Google Antigravity, 2026-10-06, @antigravity (X): “@adhidesign @googledeepmind @antigravity improve the compaction. chat truncation is really bad. whereas the likes of cline almost has “infinite” memory in a single chat session. also fully leverage gemini’s token limits before compaction” [source](https://twitter.com/2492820605/status/2107459763151782186)
- Claude Code, 2026-10-04, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i've had that for "preserve everything you did and why for each step of the plan" in /compact” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wx3k1c/be_careful_what_you_wish_for/pdrgras/)

### 9. Paste images into CLI

- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-06, X search: OpenAI Codex, Codex CLI, Codex app (X): “@thsottiaux @openaidevs could we get screenshot support in codex cli please. this is a super useful feature in claude code. cheers” [source](https://twitter.com/43342139/status/2107447753961767193)

### 10. Shared memory across different agent tools

- Cursor, 2026-10-15, @cursor_ai (X): “will @cursor_ai agents ever be able to reference @bot sessions, i want my cursor coding agent to know bot context and actions that were most recently done” [source](https://twitter.com/1189092726404288512/status/2110522468247179617)
- Cursor, 2026-10-12, @cursor_ai (X): “@elonmusk @cursor_ai add some kind of minimal db support for bots. i should not have to connect or start a service for notion, or other, just to get some kind of cross agent data store. object db, no sql, index db, or other ideas.” [source](https://twitter.com/1083235017013239808/status/2109637792800346321)
- OpenAI Codex, 2026-10-11, r/vibecoding (Reddit): “would be nice to pull context from claude code/codex into a shared system that works across the board that works. i keep switching between codex and cc, can really use a shared mem system.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/comments/1x30gr1/im_building_an_open_protocol_for_sharing_memory/pf79ava/)

### 11. Auditable reversible memory changes

- Devin, 2026-10-08, @cognition (X): “@cognition 'remove stale records' is the sentence i'd want a diff for. memory that silently rewrites itself across sessions is how a clean approval turns into a batched one six weeks later. versioned and auditable or it's just vibes with a schema.” [source](https://twitter.com/372889273/status/2108245596717133950)
- Devin, 2026-10-06, @cognition (X): “@cognition can i review and revert the overnight memory changes? an inferred preference needs a way to correct it when devin gets it wrong.” [source](https://twitter.com/1898512810272763904/status/2107567161229377558)
- Devin, 2026-10-06, @cognition (X): “@cognition i'd want the overnight rewrite as a diff. if dreaming commits memory changes straight in, nobody sees why the agent started behaving differently on monday. a reviewable pr for memory would make teams trust it.” [source](https://twitter.com/2040696623764766720/status/2107489519985688794)

### 12. Manual compaction command and timing control

- Claude Code, 2026-09-28, @ClaudeDevs (X): “@claudedevs @claudeai we need a "compact after this turn" option. sometimes i'm away for a bit, then get bit with a non-cached compaction. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/58914498/status/2104387956144271362)

- Google Antigravity, 2026-09-19, @antigravity (X): “@tigerjpeg @antigravity hey please improve antigravity it lacks a lot of features like computer use design mode and a lot of basic commands like fork compact etc feels bare 🦴 and ide has not received update for a month” [source](https://twitter.com/2044713468931031040/status/2101359368688324765)

## Posts

Receipts rule: Up to 5 praise and 5 complaint posts per area and 3 per criterion. Each is a whole post of 60 to 450 characters (700 for areas) with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, that judges the criterion, whose labels are all praise or all complaint, and that contains no slur. Posts that touch the fewest criteria come first, then posts of at most 280 characters, then the newest. A second large language model reads the first 3 candidates per slot and keeps a post only if it clearly praises, or clearly complains about, the agent on that criterion. Links and personal details removed by the source show as marks such as [link].

### Claude Code

- Praise, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “i've had one line in my vault's claude.md for ages now and it hasn't even tried to do this since.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8vtr8/hey_claude_its_about_time_you_stop/phg8f5h/)
- Praise, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “that’s why you need to specify which ecosystem you’re aiming for. i usually just tell it to use the most current symfony packages for the task and it it rarely ever tries to do something on its own.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8ufrn/i_ran_claude_code_118_times_on_blank_repos_to_see/phieasr/)

- Praise, 2026-10-17, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “auto-compacting is decent now. it's not something i worry about anymore. that said it's still better to have concrete plans, designs, task lists, and decisions documented instead of relying on them to be carried through sessions.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8ech8/calling_out_every_claude_code_pro_running_long/phbwenw/)

- Complaint, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “yeah this is the part that worries me too. it's not even "pick the best tool", it's "pick the one it saw a million times". new stuff basically needs to be named in the prompt or the claude.md to exist” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8ufrn/i_ran_claude_code_118_times_on_blank_repos_to_see/phh8yzu/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “it’s funny u got downvoted for sumn that happened to me as well. the settings don’t work if your claude had context rot since it’s just an instruction in the system prompt not a deterministic hook. i’ve had it attribute itself even with the setting off at ~700k context.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x8vtr8/hey_claude_its_about_time_you_stop/phhqj13/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “hey thanks for the reply, i already told it to do that, but it didnt give all the info and only bad summaries of some aspects of the model/idea, even after multiple prompts” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x9055r/hey_everyone_is_there_a_tool_that_lets_my_chat/phhyhfp/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-18, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “opus is severely flawed because it imagines rules, and persists them. on oneshots that's not an issue, and can even be an asset. longer term it will pollute and degrade your project if you don't protect it from opus' imagined rules.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1x93vw9/anyone_else_experiencing_a_sudden_drop_in_opus/phi24p3/)

### Pi

- Praise, 2026-10-01, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “fwiw, just started using pi-observable-memory and pretty much never see compactions now. it does require a separate model, but a separate, smaller local model should work, or zai glm 5.3 flash is super cheap. [link]” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wuty3r/i_made_a_pi_extension_that_improves_compaction/pd8gvc8/)
- Praise, 2026-09-28, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “check out pi-blackhole. i have an extremely limited hardware setup, been running 27b nonstop, with xhigh thinking, with that extension keeping my context in check. it works wonders.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wnmsho/i_want_to_believe_in_local_llms_for_coding_but/pciel9a/)
- Praise, 2026-09-28, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “compaction at 250k is what works quite well. keeps context in sweet spot of llm quality coding” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wruev9/omp_and_opus_55_usage/pciis9r/)
- Praise, 2026-09-28, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “fwiw i've got mine set to 100k threshold and 10min (to be under the 30min codex sub and 1hr claude sub times) - that works well for me. i'm also pretty pushy about my agent writing plans with enough detail to survive compacting, so i'm happy for it to compact often.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wruev9/omp_and_opus_55_usage/pcitu8z/)
- Complaint, 2026-10-15, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev psa: on my pc, closing pi and continuing a session made the clankas forget some tools. for whatever reason /reload fixed them. one of them even figured it will spawn another pi agent and ask it to send it a /reload command lol” [source](https://twitter.com/183580487/status/2110872275750973675)
- Complaint, 2026-10-01, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “it doesn't work when using "/compact" manually? i tried doing that to prevent a huge cache upload and it did regular pi compaction, so had to eat the huge cache upload anyway...” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wuty3r/i_made_a_pi_extension_that_improves_compaction/pda9vuw/)

### Devin

- Praise, 2026-10-10, @cognition (X): “@mystere___ @cognition it’s not all compatibility problems tho. devin supports a bunch of open standards and other harness semantics - prefer claude.md files to agents.md files? devin supports both. a myriad of other cross harness standards converge in devin.” [source](https://twitter.com/1095784409683374080/status/2109016245890883999)

- Complaint, 2026-10-10, @cognition (X): “@mystere___ @cognition if you have a lovely composed tree of agents.md files that works great in codex, your devin agent will get overwhelmed because the injection persists beyond the lifetime of the agents activity in that scope.” [source](https://twitter.com/1095784409683374080/status/2109009168959168649)

- Complaint, 2026-10-02, @AmpCode (X): “@thorstenball @ampcode and to be clear, it isn’t so much a question of durability or being afraid i’ll lose it entirely. it’s more a question of durability in effectiveness in a single thread without having to be explicitly reminded to follow a specific playbook every few hours.” [source](https://twitter.com/7566122/status/2106000114821247188)
- Complaint, 2026-10-01, @AmpCode (X): “@thorstenball is there a way to keep some aspect of the context from compacting? i keep having issues where after long enough time, my orchestrator stops remembering the opening rules/playbook i give it and @ampcode starts to play fast and loose with me preferred processes.” [source](https://twitter.com/7566122/status/2105804263280840763)

### Cursor

- Praise, 2026-10-13, r/cursor (Reddit): “true. also from experience, cursor are the first one who was doing a great job indexing the codebase. i think i don't know right now what's the situation with claude and the rest, but cursor are doing a great job at that as well.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/cursor/comments/1x4or37/cursor_new_plans_and_major_changes/pggxay8/)
- Praise, 2026-10-10, @cursor_ai (X): “if you are going to write code, without a doubt, the claude model inside @cursor_ai sees not just a single file but the entire project and finds where the error is by itself. pasting code into chatgpt all the time is now a waste of time.” [source](https://twitter.com/1034446320960983041/status/2108806829707030775)

- Praise, 2026-10-06, @cursor_ai (X): “best setup i’ve found with @bot: don’t have it write the code or babysit the coding agent. have it hand off once. the @cursor_ai cloud agent lands in your repo and uses the skills, playbooks, and checklists already there. this took some serious fumbles to figure out.” [source](https://twitter.com/19939826/status/2107285939978674493)

### Factory

- Complaint, 2026-09-08, r/kiroIDE (Reddit): “my enterprise pays for it. but it frequently gives a high traffic message and gets stuck in "working" until i switch to a lower model. when ai development service isn't able to provide the basic feature of model available, why should i not shit on it. plus all the open-source models are outdated. and the context widows of the gpt models are like a teaspoon. compaction occurs every 10 minutes. it's a shite service all round.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/kiroIDE/comments/1t4k9yc/why_is_kiro_hated_so_much/p8i7tlf/)

### Augment Code

- Praise, 2026-10-08, @augmentcode (X): “@augmentcode @harnessio the context engine of augment was truely one of a kind, and i’m yet to this day to find anything as fast when it comes to context across large codebases. best of luck to the team!” [source](https://twitter.com/985631142043836417/status/2108245915488194661)
- Praise, 2026-10-08, @augmentcode (X): “@augmentcode @harnessio @igoro @scott_dietzen and team was early and built something special to be proud of. the context engine was innovative from day one, and delightful the first time i used it inside vscode. excited to see cosmos, auggie, and the context engine inside harness. onwards! - Praise, 2026-09-09, G2 (G2): “q: what problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you? a: it supports me in code development and also has the ability to notify me of errors in extensive codes q: what do you like best about the product? a: the ability to understand the project and not just specific tasks q: what do you dislike about the product? a: as of today, there is nothing that displeases me as such” [source](https://www.g2.com/products/augment-code/reviews/augment-code-review-13431575)
- Praise, 2026-09-13, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “glm 5.3 and glm 5.3 flash are no go for me, i tried their promo weekend tokens and found them underwhelming in more ways than i can tolerate. most importantly, they embedded a lot of confidently incomplete information in designs which failed audits and got blocked during implementation. (i used augmentcode before switching to claudecode, then after a month with claudecode i went back to augmentcode, again this was about a year ago and i found augmentcode context engineering much better at that time and their fixed pricing for 1500 requests were too good to pass which didn't last of course )” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wf9uuf/wth_is_going_on_with_claude_usage_limits/p9lym97/)

### Conductor

- Praise, 2026-09-11, @conductor_build (X): “@conductor_build 4. not just code, but i'll likely end up moving all me claude cowork/chat and chatgpt convos over to git/@conductor_build . it's the only way to keep all my mcps, files, and context and etc in sync and model agnostic” [source](https://twitter.com/20480365/status/2098402338885013910)
- Praise, 2026-09-13, @conductor_build (X): “get multiple codex subscriptions and switch between them i use @conductor_build and all i need to do is to re-login in the provider to the other email/account and all my context and code sessions stay and i dont have to worry about that so you dont pay for extra limit resets, you just need to have multiple subscriptions” [source](https://twitter.com/1689067564058447873/status/2099141354156646409)
- Complaint, 2026-09-18, @conductor_build (X): “i gave @conductor_build a shot but not sure whats going on with the harness? gave exact same message to codex and it just knew what i mean new chats on both [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/2715100816/status/2101005041817550850)

### Warp

- Praise, 2026-09-17, r/codex (Reddit): “there’s no way they can continue offering these plans with all of us hammering on their servers basically all day every single day. had a sense this would come to an end. have basically been at it nonstop to get product advanced as far as possible. fyi….the grok $300 plan is incredible……soooo much programming. shit tons. way more than even codex 20x or claude max. i use all 3. also, for grok….100% use it with warp. free to use warp…byom…bring your own model. gives me the context between tasks like we have on desktop programs for claude or codex.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1whlif0/support_just_told_me_they_arent_renewing_people/paad0jv/)

### Grok Build

- Praise, 2026-09-22, r/ClaudeCode (Reddit): “usage burns fast on codex too but at least is still competent on sol 5.6. claude on opus 5 has gotten nearly unusable. i will say that my first impressions of grok build are good. its surprisingly much better than claude at actually following rules and not drifting into pure insanity.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wmbt29/two_5x_sub_or_one_20x_sub/pba474l/)
