# OpenCode is 1st of 12 on plan value, as the $10 worker beside a frontier model

*More than 260 people say from their own use that OpenCode Go buys a lot of work for its price, and OpenCode is 1st of 12 agents on plan value. Many keep a Codex or Claude plan and give the routine coding to Go's open models.*

What users credit, OpenCode. By Feedback Bench, 15 October 2026. Feedback Bench 1.1. Posts 2026-08-31 to 2026-10-18; bench built 2026-10-19. Web: https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/#/articles/opencode-is-1st-of-12-on-plan-value-as-the-10-worker-beside-a-frontier-model

One Saturday in September, a developer in r/codex was waiting out two weekly resets on their accounts. While waiting, they tried something else.

> as i waited for 2 weekly resets for my accounts and noticing one's resubscribe date was moved to just before my reset, i gave a shot to opencode and attached their go subscription api and o my god what a world of difference.

[A user on r/codex, 2026-09-19](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wjysnh/hope_yall_enjoyed_it/paqygql/)

Three days later the same person wrote again, in the same forum, that they had cancelled all their subscriptions and moved to OpenCode, "[and omfg its a world of difference for just 10 bucks](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wnnv36/plus_users_hows_your_experience_so_far/pbgxe87/)."

Posts like this are common in our sample. Over the seven weeks we studied, more than 260 people said, from their own use, that an OpenCode paid plan gives them a lot of work for its price. On Feedback Bench, OpenCode is 1st of 12 agents on [how much use a plan's price buys](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/limits.plan_value.md). A rougher count across all seventeen agents, from the labels alone, puts OpenCode just behind Devin at the top of a close group with Codex, Copilot and Factory.

The company already says the short version on its Go page: "Low cost coding models for everyone." The posts add how people use the plan, and that explains why it feels so large to them.

## The worker beside a frontier plan

Many of these people do not use Go on its own. They keep a subscription to a frontier lab's model and give it the thinking: the plan, the review, the decision about what to do next. They give the typing to a cheap open model running through OpenCode. Of those who praise Go's value, 47 say in the same post that they keep a frontier plan and use Go beside it. In a separate count of posts where users describe their setup, 95 people split one job across models by role, with OpenCode or Go supplying at least one of them.

One heavy poster in r/opencode, whose history includes plenty of criticism of particular models, put it as a routine:

> i combine opencode go and codex plus and i almost never reach the limits. i make a lot of use of gpt luna, deepseek flash, and mimo 2.5 for mechanical and simple tasks, and i leave gpt sol for tasks that require more intelligence.

[A user on r/opencode, 2026-09-18](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wjs3xv/mejor_suscripciónapi_de_ia_en_el_rango_de_los/paleweb/)

Another user, in r/vibecoding, ran the same split with different brands. A frontier model "[will plan and also review changes. but all the individual coding and tasks are done by deepseek at like 2% the cost of opus](https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/comments/1wg5ogw/astra_8_deepseek_41_subagents_insanely_cheap/p9vtetp/)." OpenCode's users single out this split often.

Where those 95 people wrote matters as much as how many there were. Forty-one of them posted outside OpenCode's own forums, and 31 posted in r/codex, r/ClaudeCode or r/ClaudeAI. They were telling other Codex and Claude users how to make those subscriptions last. In a few cases OpenCode is not even the front end. Twelve of the 95 let Codex or Claude Code call OpenCode as a headless worker, through its command line, its API or the ACP protocol. A Codex user described the wiring like this:

> setup is stupidly simple - i have opencode setup, and i have a skill for codex to call the opencode cli.

[A user on r/codex, 2026-09-18](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wj9hyr/astra_orchestrated_deepseekglmqwen/pah71g6/)

Another Codex user went further and set a GLM model in OpenCode to watch the Codex agents: "[glm acts as an external auditor of my codex team's operational discipline](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w627eu/i_beg_you_release_it/p7kwtc0/)." OpenCode working as a subcontractor inside its rivals' workflows follows from two things the product already does well. It accepts nearly any model, including a ChatGPT subscription, and it runs without a person at the keyboard.

OpenCode's own agents documentation suggests setting "a faster model for planning, a more capable model for implementation." About half of the 95 people we read do the reverse. They spend their scarce frontier quota on the plan and the review, where a mistake costs most, and let a cheap model carry the volume. The per-agent model setting supports both splits. Their version is the one that makes a ten-dollar plan go so far.

## Who gets the most out of it

The most enthusiastic people in the sample are those who feel the limits of the big labs' plans. Many compare Go directly with a Codex, Claude, Cursor or Copilot plan, and 25 describe hitting a rival plan's limit and then turning to Go. One user on X wrote three lines about it:

> i'm paying \$100/mo for codex and have usage anxiety constantly. i'm paying \$10/mo for go and am shocked every time i check my usage.

[A user on X, 2026-09-16](https://twitter.com/1834266246088400901/status/2100055138761072907)

They tend to report numbers, not adjectives. One regular in r/opencode, who also posts complaints about models that stopped working for them, reported:

> i get about 1b tokens per month with deepseek v4 flash on the \$10 go plan, >95% cache hit, peak and off-peak mixed.

[A user on r/opencode, 2026-09-06](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1w8ahv5/is_opencode_go_enough/p88xtq9/)

The models they name most often are DeepSeek's Flash models, named by 126 of them. Muse Spark and GLM follow. Many give the credit for the value to the model as much as to the plan. That is fair, but the plan is where they found the model at that price, inside a harness that lets it work beside the frontier subscription they already pay for.

**Exhibit 2: Users credit cheap models, and they measure Go against the big labs' plans.** What people say alongside their praise of Go's value. One person can appear in several rows.

| | People who say OpenCode's plan gives a lot of use for its price |
|---|---|
| Name DeepSeek Flash | 126 people |
| Compare Go with a Codex, Claude, Cursor or Copilot plan | 73 people |
| Name Muse Spark | 58 people |
| Give a usage figure from their own meter | 50 people |
| Keep a frontier plan and use Go beside it | 47 people |
| Turned to Go after hitting a rival plan's limits | 25 people |

## What this suggests to protect, and where it could go

The praise depends on the worker's cost staying low and predictable, so that a frontier plan lasts the week. Users talk about Go as the part of their setup they no longer think about. In our earlier reading of OpenCode, complaints bunched on the days a model's allowance changed.

The second thing to protect is OpenCode's openness to other agents. People who drive OpenCode from Codex or Claude Code are using it in a way no marketing page describes, and they recommend it to other users in the Codex and Claude forums.

Users also point to where it could go further. One r/opencodeCLI user who maps models to roles wrote that "[on opencode2, it's not easy to just set up that 3 tier models, so i basically do it by subagent role](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencodeCLI/comments/1w5rzgw/anyone_got_any_experience_with_smart_routing/p8sw5ac/)," and built a command to swap models between roles. A Codex user said they moved to OpenCode because the Codex desktop app was "[not at all transparent about model/effort specs of the subagents it launches](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wbqhzl/does_the_chatgptcodex_desktop_app_launch_luna/p9ccmrd/)." Making the planner-and-worker split a named, easy setup, and keeping each subagent's model visible, would serve the people who already use OpenCode this way.

## Limits

Praise is not the whole picture. On the bench's plan-value measure, OpenCode's posts carry 740 praising user-weeks against 493 complaining ones. That is more praise than complaint, but four in ten of them complain. Our window also includes the change to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash's allowance, which arrived on 10 September with a temporary promotion that became permanent two weeks later. So some of this praise was written while that promotion ran. The split does not work for everyone. One Codex user found that planning with a frontier model and implementing with DeepSeek "[was a waste of time](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wnnv36/plus_users_hows_your_experience_so_far/pbhaqhd/)" because of the back-and-forth. In the setup posts we read, 11 people reported problems like this, against 95 who were satisfied. The value count is a floor, because we read only posts already labelled as praise for plan value.

## How we read this

We started from posts about OpenCode on Reddit, X and Trustpilot in the seven weeks to 18 October 2026. We removed authors on our exclusion list, staff, vendors, reply bots, and nineteen accounts that post referral links, coupons, giveaway replies or their own products. Large language models labelled each post, and we then read every candidate post against a written rule. A post counts toward the value count only if its author says, from their own use or as a first-hand recommendation, that an OpenCode paid plan gives a lot of use for its price. A post counts toward the 95 only if its author describes their own setup with models in distinct roles or chosen per task, with OpenCode or Go supplying at least one model. We left borderline posts out. When we re-read samples of counted value posts, we agreed with more than nine in ten, so we report that count as more than 260 people. We checked every quoted author's other posts across all agents. Exhibit 1 is the bench's own reading. The rougher cross-agent count uses the labels alone, with the same rule for all seventeen agents: people who praise what a plan buys, per hundred people who judge the agent.
