## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

Pi is a minimal harness that users build into their own tool. Much of what it does depends on extensions they pick or write. That is the main reason people choose it, and it is also where its weak spots come from. MCP and plugins make up 17% of what its users rate, against 2.4% for other agents. Subagents pull it down. Pi ranks 9th of 10 there, and users call the subagent packages bloated. Against Claude Code, users favour Pi 28 to 8. Against OpenCode and OpenAI Codex the split is close.

### Why people choose it

- **Extensions let users shape the harness** ([MCP and plugins work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.extensions_mcp.md)). 7.2×: 17% of what users rate, 7.2× the rate for other agents. Ranks 1st of 9 on “MCP and plugins work”. Users write their own extensions, prompt templates and packages. Some reuse Pi's hooks instead of building a harness from scratch. Users say MCP's deferred mode adds tools on demand, so the tools do not fill the context by default.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-09, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “that's so true. i like how it let's one customize the harness to be exactly how they want it. unlike the other already prebuilt harnesses. i've even built myself a web gui extension that lets me spawn specialist agents to help with my 9-5 tickets and my own hobby side projects.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x1tqg5/pi_is_linuxvimcjsk8s_of_the_ai_harnesses_world/pewqzr9/)
  - 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i also just added my first mcp. as said earlier, you need to configure it! i think 5he "deferred" mode is a nice take! i like being able to add tools on demand, but they won't pollute the context by default.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtywli/pi_new_mcp_codemode/pdmajm7/)
- **Handles a wide range of work** ([Quality of work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)). 5th: of 14 on “Quality of work”. 27% of what users rate. Posts describe users building apps, running long jobs and using Pi for work beyond coding, often with the pi-durable package. Some say long runs finish without the stalls they had in other tools.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-13, r/LocalLLaMA (Reddit): “i gave up on opencode, i had to tell it to continue everytime, after compaction it was sometime starting everything from zero because all the reflexion has been compacted . moved to pi agent, never had a single issue. my agent can run for hours without issue.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1x3n8ex/opencode_2026_is_out_if_you_need_to_constantly/pgfxx1b/)
  - 2026-10-11, @pidotdev (X): “@khudonogov @henriquebastos @pidotdev you can use pi for everything. i'm using it for agentic video generation where the agent has access to comfyui for example. or research. it can do anything the other harnesses can do” [source](https://twitter.com/969598603869282305/status/2109234409358467327)
- **Compaction keeps long sessions on track** ([Compaction keeps what matters](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/context.compaction.md)). 6.5×: 5% of what users rate, 6.5× the rate for other agents. Ranks 1st of 5 on “Compaction keeps what matters”. Users recommend compaction packages such as pi-vcc and pi-blackhole to each other, and they set their own thresholds. Some report lower token use when they compact earlier without losing context.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-09-21, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “nah, i wouldn't bother. pi-vcc on the other hand, absolutely. it turns compaction into a 1-2 second affair, even with 27b on xhigh.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wlpj30/lord_forgive_me_for_the_time_i_wasted/pb4snq0/)
  - 2026-09-25, @pidotdev (X): “read some code of @pidotdev . it compacts session summary really well which reduces input token consumption nearly ~50% ( in some cases).” [source](https://twitter.com/1326554840042934273/status/2103624224145617404)

### Why people leave

- **Subagent packages feel bloated** ([Subagents work well](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.multi_agent_orchestration.md)). 1.9×: 8% of what users rate, 1.9× the rate for other agents. Ranks 9th of 10 on “Subagents work well”. Users say the subagent extension adds many tools and a long prompt to every session, and some remove it. Others say subagents slow work down on local hardware, or that models try and fail once before they delegate.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-09-30, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “the pi subagents extension is indeed bloated. it carries around 60 different parameters and its prompt is >20k” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtx1tz/pi_is_becoming_bloated/pd3evti/)
  - 2026-10-17, @pidotdev (X): “just removed a subagent package from my coding agent setup. it was exposing 15 tools in every session and was only compatible with 1 harness i.e. @pidotdev . replaced with a cli that just spawns agents in @herdrdev giving me full cross compatibility between claude code and pi.” [source](https://twitter.com/2030100224539250689/status/2111357990054080971)

### Head to head

- **Pi vs OpenCode**: Pi ahead in 25 of 48 posts that pick a side, 34 even. Pi comes out ahead in 25 of 82 posts and OpenCode in 23. Users who prefer OpenCode cite polish, fast startup and an easier start. Users who prefer Pi cite long runs and lower token use. In Pi's own subreddit, OpenCode leads 17 to 13.
  - 2026-10-02, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i think its an awesome idea and works pretty good. but i think opencode is more polished, which makes since as its pretty bare bones on purpose. ill keep using it for side projects for sure” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wsvzkp/pi_is_hallucinating_all_types_of_ways/pdcdp4u/)
  - 2026-09-21, r/opencode (Reddit): “i started using pi agent instead of opencode - it is much better in tokens consumption, it has also some plugins to decrease using tokens - compacting context before sending on each call , and some other methods to effectively code with lower tokens consumption.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wm7pi6/what_the_hell_is_going_on_with_deepseek/pb7mjre/)
- **Pi vs Claude Code**: Pi ahead in 28 of 36 posts that pick a side, 13 even. Pi comes out ahead in 28 of 49 posts and Claude Code in 8. Users who prefer Pi call Claude Code bloated and opaque, and they describe lower costs per task.
  - 2026-10-13, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “the reason i use pi is because claude code is bloated and non-transparent, so whats the point of configuring it back? the magic is mostly on the llm side, and harness should be as thin and as cost efficient as possible.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x43is7/how_to_set_up_pi_like_claude_code/pgf675q/)
  - 2026-10-13, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “thanks! frankly i just wanted something for work that isn’t claude code since we’re constrained on api usage at the moment. this as well as just normal base pi are ~2x cheaper on costs per task generally compared to claude code.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x547li/dev_workflow_beyond_traditional_harnesses/pgk5wxf/)
- **Pi vs OpenAI Codex**: Pi ahead in 18 of 33 posts that pick a side, 27 even. Pi comes out ahead in 18 of 60 posts and OpenAI Codex in 15. Users who prefer Pi cite customization and lower token use. Users who prefer Codex say OpenAI models work better in Codex, and they miss its interface and computer use.
  - 2026-09-10, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “yeah i mean i literally feel like i get 1.5x usage than codex with the same subscription. i’ve measured it multiple times and pi costs me 40-50% less on the same tasks compared to codex.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wcj9bg/who_uses_pi_what_do_you_like_about_it/p8zaao8/)
  - 2026-10-14, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev @openai why does openai models work way better in their native haness... its night and day difference. pi is the better harness but the models just does everything better in codex cli.” [source](https://twitter.com/3420976349/status/2110480169555136999)

### What would move its score

Rule: For each area where an agent's customer love is below the category norm: the Feedback Score and rank it would have if that one area were at the norm (0.5) and everything else stayed the same, computed with the same formula as the ranking. An area's pull follows its weight, so an area many users of the category rate moves the score more than one they rarely mention.

No area would move the Feedback Score. Every area already sits at or above the category norm, so moving one to the norm changes nothing. The weakest criterion is subagents, where Pi ranks 9th of 10.

### Six weeks

Users peaked at 1,331 in the week of 28 September, when Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol and Gemini 4 Argon came out. They fell to 557 in the last week. Rank slipped from 3rd to 6th. Share of voice stayed at 2% to 4%.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 593 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Claude subscription usable in third-party harnesses

- Pi, 2026-10-08, @pidotdev (X): “@claudedevs when can i use my claude subscription in @pidotdev now” [source](https://twitter.com/1092126148434190336/status/2107994037596873172)
- Pi, 2026-10-05, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i too got frustrated with openai and canceled. but claude won’t get my money unless they allow 3rd party harnesses. so i went with chinese models. and they are working great for the tools that i build.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wykxe7/claude_sub_with_pi/pe3m3f7/)
- Pi, 2026-10-05, @pidotdev (X): “come on, @anthropicai let me use my claudes in @pidotdev again, new openai models are so flakey” [source](https://twitter.com/1416500532/status/2107214397924098059)

### 2. MCP as optional plugin, not core

- Pi, 2026-10-06, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “sadly now its adding mcp natively (not even disabled by default and with codemode that who knows which model is pre trained to use that) who knows what will be added tomorrow” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wydpe0/now_that_everyone_is_making_harness_tierlists/pe4zxlw/)
- Pi, 2026-10-04, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “whatever. just fork old version without mcp. and do everything with plugins.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wvaw9r/pi_10_earendil/pdsflwn/)
- Pi, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “thank you. that really helps. i guess i can see how chaining mcps might be useful but still seems like this, at best, should have been a plugin rather than a built in feature.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtxc1d/what_does_everyone_think_about_codemode/pdk5c65/)

### 3. Built-in first-class subagent orchestration

- Pi, 2026-10-10, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “its one of the best arguments for features moving into the core. still want to be able to toggle things on or off, but one subagent api would allow deeper integration without reimplementing features” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wzgr8b/pioptchat_never_compact_again_endless_chat_as_a/pf4jdqp/)
- Pi, 2026-10-08, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “yeah. although support for basic stuff such as sub-agent orchestration, plugins, auto-mode which come built-in in most other harnesses should come first.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x0jnrx/is_there_a_prepackaged_pi_distribution_like/pel783r/)
- Pi, 2026-10-02, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “controversial but if they added native subagents (or a first party extension) - it’d be complete out of the box for most enterprises” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wvaw9r/pi_10_earendil/pdbpal0/)

### 4. Subscriptions usable in third-party harnesses

- Pi, 2026-10-14, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “gemini 4 is out. a lot of people like it. any chance we can use a plan with pi? or are we being forced to use antigravity?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x5vm0p/argon/)
- Pi, 2026-10-13, @pidotdev (X): “every single ai provider needs to support @pidotdev and other open source option of a harness. it's ide wars all over again and we can't afford to be locked into another xcode or visual studio, people!” [source](https://twitter.com/294128521/status/2110039781178482956)
- Pi, 2026-10-01, @pidotdev (X): “since moving my codex sessions to @pidotdev i'm noticing my quota is moving a lot slower than before and i'm getting just as much quality work done. thanks i guess to pi and @openai for letting us use my sub in non-official harnesses. (want to do this next, @anthropicai?)” [source](https://twitter.com/802967252/status/2105624400451993783)

### 5. Minimal core with features as optional extensions

- Pi, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i don't use mcps so the new changes didn't impact me in this area. however, i hope that non-core features are toggleable (even if through command line flags) so we can disable what we don't need.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wwllzb/will_pi_add_builtin_subagents_or_sandboxes/pdm71g8/)
- Pi, 2026-10-03, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “why? add it youselft, there are plenty of them :) let pi be minimalistic” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wwllzb/will_pi_add_builtin_subagents_or_sandboxes/pdlnuol/)
- Pi, 2026-10-01, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “ah then that's an issue, honestly all these should have been left out as a part of extensions i think” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtx1tz/pi_is_becoming_bloated/pd6meyh/)

### 6. Dedicated desktop app

- Pi, 2026-10-01, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev when will the desktop version be released? i want the desktop version.” [source](https://twitter.com/1651427161470046209/status/2105792421569429975)
- Pi, 2026-09-27, @pidotdev (X): “genuinely believe a solid desktop app will unlock a crazy amount of new users on to @pidotdev, and excited that pi-gui can play a part in that. it has to be a desktop app focused on pi though, because pi has unique features like /tree and extensions that have to be showcased.” [source](https://twitter.com/1689423238173007873/status/2104240272628404326)

### 7. Configurable multi-model agent teams with roles

- Pi, 2026-09-25, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “use it once and given up. it can not work like build up an agent teams and let different session collobration together.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wogo23/has_anyone_tried_piintercom/pbxuqz1/)
- Pi, 2026-09-22, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev @indydevdan composable ai developer workflows with custom pi agents. maybe some "primitive" agents that can be built into pi agent teams, particularly for sdlc workflows” [source](https://twitter.com/2758152969/status/2102415098987888922)
- Pi, 2026-09-14, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “i'm not convinced that subagents have much value, and quite possibly they cause harm. [link] what i do want better tools for is specific jobs. eg. always running a simplify loop at the end of task, but doing it with a different model or different thinking level.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wfvpzk/i_stopped_treating_subagents_as_disposable/p9q2jwa/)

### 8. General MCP server support

- Pi, 2026-10-11, @pidotdev (X): “@harshil1712 @pidotdev @cloudflaredev yeah that was a question i had, is it possible to connect a mcp to the pi durable harness?” [source](https://twitter.com/801745723947675648/status/2109318560036126966)
- Pi, 2026-09-30, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “with mcp current state and adaptation by everyone it makes sense to have it as default in pi.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtx1tz/pi_is_becoming_bloated/pcyjrix/)
- Pi, 2026-09-30, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “do you pi just because you wanna be niche? mcp is a protocol that should be standardized and having different extensions for it is in my opinion not needed. it has generally important usecases combined with codemode and the models training are going in that trend, so not having it by default will make pi less optimal by default. and even then, you can disable it if you want. minimalism just for the sake of it is not the way to go.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wtx1tz/pi_is_becoming_bloated/pcywvd7/)

### 9. Subagent activity visibility

- Pi, 2026-09-25, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev also - `pi -p` opens a background subagent. any chance of a foreground subagent? i want a window that opens up on top of my existing pi window, and when i finish it closes itself, drops me back to the previous window with a summary or whatever. call stack :)” [source](https://twitter.com/1678448492690419712/status/2103526499588690092)
- Pi, 2026-10-04, @pidotdev (X): “@championswimmer @pidotdev the subagent status ui is spot on. the pitfalls i've encountered: forking with inherited biases, and if it goes off track, i have to go back and check who infected it; fresh 0-context also leads to repetitive work. so just showing who is running is not enough; it's best to label the context source and budget, making it easy to distinguish which are inherited and which are blank.” [source](https://twitter.com/1692146406914760704/status/2106871968633135126)
- Pi, 2026-09-18, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “seeing the subagent breakdown would be something i'd use. raw token count tells me who was expensive, but i also want to know whether that subagent completed its job or just wandered around for 20 calls. that’s something i look at through braintrust when searching through agent traces, and having a local pi view of it would also be useful.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wj4flu/i_built_pi_session_inspector_to_see_where_my/pakqbs5/)

### 10. Configurable keyboard shortcuts

- Pi, 2026-10-08, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “can we have a key stoke to quickly scroll back to the beginning of latest pi reply?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1x0ofwy/github_vimmodepi_vim_modal_editor_for_pis_tui/pemos6v/)
- Pi, 2026-09-24, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “can you avoid shortcuts with alt - i am a mac user, and alt doesn’t work :(” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wp0net/pi_atelier_update_redesigned_composer_git_status/pbt3p05/)
- Pi, 2026-09-13, @pidotdev (X): “@tianyi_gc @pidotdev - **add a markdown formatting ribbon:** offer an extended formatting toolbar that users can enable in settings. - **add a configurable global shortcut:** let users set a shortcut, such as ⌃space, to bring cydonia into focus.” [source](https://twitter.com/1726013725654556672/status/2099174189991157876)

### 11. Multi-provider model support

- Pi, 2026-09-29, @pidotdev (X): “this is also cool, but you know what is even cooler? allowing enterprise teams to run @pidotdev against whatever model they like with no dumb vendor limitations. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/303129822/status/2105040588110483882)
- Pi, 2026-09-24, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “this looks really useful, also for getting better at prompting and planning as a human :) yes pi support would be great, i use multiple harnesses on the same project” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wp7uqr/would_you_guys_find_this_tool_useful/pbt2y1e/)
- Pi, 2026-09-23, r/PiCodingAgent (Reddit): “make it work with von too. and automate calibration to you pi sessions.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/PiCodingAgent/comments/1wnl7da/pi_can_now_use_jev_and_more/pbiylzx/)

### 12. Rewind session to checkpoint with code revert

- Pi, 2026-09-26, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev @pidotdev the ability to undo your code changes / updates when you move back with the /timeline feature pls 😃” [source](https://twitter.com/1579853783290580993/status/2103793570155237673)
- Pi, 2026-09-23, @pidotdev (X): “i can't believe no major harness has adopted `/tree` from @pidotdev. some have forks, but man i miss `/tree` so much in codex and @chatgpt. i wish each message had a "rollback" button, which would summarize the tail of the chat up to the selected message.” [source](https://twitter.com/15790969/status/2102812042272874506)
- Pi, 2026-09-09, @pidotdev (X): “@pidotdev can you pls add easy way to restore checkpoint feature to go back in conversation and restart” [source](https://twitter.com/2086150037726539776/status/2097709557414072689)

Position on a criterion: its place among the agents with at least 30 rated user-weeks there, ordered by customer love. It ranks high when both its position and its 95% interval put it in the top half, low when both put it in the bottom half; neither otherwise, or when fewer than 4 agents qualify.

## All 63 criteria

Criterion love: 0.5 is the category norm. n: rated user-weeks.

### Paying and limits: 2nd of 13 (customer love 0.650, n 275)

Users talk about price less often than they do for other agents, and praise outnumbers complaints. Pi ranks 1st of 12 on usage quota, and users credit its low token use. Opinion splits on using a subscription in other tools, with praise and complaints almost even.

- Complaint, 2026-09-04, @pidotdev (X): “the useful line is in the log, not the prompt. v7 already retired pi+grok for slower runs and fabricated verification. switching because of weekly limits doesn’t fix that. lock the harness contract first: what “done” means, how you verify, what you do when the model lies. then change the model.” [source](https://twitter.com/1801539591427543040/status/2095871036294119875)
