## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

GitHub Copilot is a low-cost seat with many models behind it, and an employer often pays for it. Users like the price and the choice of models, but they rate the work it produces below almost every other coding agent. Pricing and limits make up 39.9% of what its users rate, against 30.0% for other agents, and users rate that area better than the category norm. Quality of work ranks 13th of 14. When posts compare it with Claude Code, Claude Code comes out ahead 54 to 30. OpenAI Codex also leads it in direct comparisons.

### Why people choose it

- **Cheap models make the allowance last** ([Pricing and limits](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/paying.md)). 6th: of 13 on “Pricing and limits”. 40% of what users rate. Users describe setting Copilot to the low-cost Luna model and watching the credit meter barely move. Many get their seat through work and say they rarely or never hit limits. Some miss an earlier period when strong models felt almost free.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “with gpt-6 luna it almost feels like the good old times of careless vibe-coding with github copilot are coming back. the credit meter barely moves!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x02f8v/gpt6_luna_copilot_improves/pejpek8/)
  - 2026-10-09, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i just lock it to luna, with the occasional bump to sol. i struggle to burn through my tokens in a month as is.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x1eys6/anyone_using_auto_mode/peuldkw/)
- **One subscription offers models from many vendors** ([Models](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/models.md)). 1.7×: 18% of what users rate, 1.7× the rate for other agents. Ranks 7th of 12 on “Models”. Users pick among models from several vendors in one tool. Many plan with a stronger model and hand the work to a cheaper one. Teams say they chose it so they can use new models from any vendor without switching tools.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-05, r/ClaudeAI (Reddit): “yeah we had to pick one tool to use as a team. and this is why we went with github copilot. yes it has short comings, though the newish standalone app is very claude/codex alike. but as new models emerge from any vendor we can use them.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wxsns4/anthropic_needs_an_even_cheaper_model_than_haiku/pe18o1h/)
  - 2026-10-07, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i switch between luna 6 and opus 5.5. luna 6 is very good, very cheap. i use opus for the more complex tasks, like creating a prototype. luna will comfortably apply it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x02f8v/gpt6_luna_copilot_improves/pehjqug/)
- **Employers trust it with company data** ([Support and account](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/account.md)). 3rd: of 11 on “Support and account”. 3% of what users rate. Users at banks and at firms with strict data rules say Copilot is the approved tool. They point to enterprise data protection and to a setting that turns training off. One user who filed a support ticket describes a quick fix.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-02, r/artificial (Reddit): “that’s hilarious, my workplace banned chatgpt and claude to prevent data leaks, restricting the use only to copilot.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/artificial/comments/1ww07rr/microsoft_is_cosplaying_ai/pdh7gb2/)
  - 2026-10-12, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “file a support ticket to github. it should work just fine. had the same problem recently at work. they fixed in in like 3 hours” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x4de26/github_copilot_metered_billing_via_azure/pfj0k3q/)

### Why people leave

- **The work often falls short** ([Quality of work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/work.md)). 13th: of 14 on “Quality of work”. 28% of what users rate. Users say it needs very specific instructions or its output is sloppy. Posts describe it failing to understand a project it takes over, and making changes without asking. Some report whole chunks of output disappearing into summarized reasoning blocks.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-06, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “its not very smart. you need to provide very specific instructions otherwise it tends to create slop. once you get used to a sota model like opus 5.5, dealing with these small models is painful.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wvuh3x/should_i_keep_my_github_copilot_pro_plan/pe8w5bp/)
  - 2026-10-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “this sucks so much, man. the model just went berserk on my project without asking first.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x0lrqd/no_more_ask_or_plan_mode_available_agent_mode_is/pen5sf5/)
- **Tools and skills go missing between surfaces** ([MCP and plugins work](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/setup.extensions_mcp.md)). 5th: of 9 on “MCP and plugins work”. 4% of what users rate. Posts describe custom tools and skills that work in VS Code but not in the agents window or the CLI. Users also report MCP tools missing from the tools page while the server runs. In multi-root workspaces, discovery only finds one root folder.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-10, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “the issue is i have custom tools in vscode for copilot.. i cant seem to access them in agents window” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x2b0pr/the_harness_is_absolute_trash/pf0n2ex/)
  - 2026-09-25, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “local because i use multiroot workspace with mcp, skills and rules in each and the copilot harness does not work with that as it is bound to only one root in terms of discovery.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wpctlc/vs_code_chat_users_local_or_copilot_harness/pby96ge/)
- **Redesigns made the display harder to use** ([Clear display and settings](https://feedbackbench.com/coding-agents/criteria/ui.display_settings.md)). 48 : 12: complaints to praise, in user-weeks. Ranks 10th of 12 on “Clear display and settings”. Users dislike the revamped model picker. They say the thinking steps now show as a single label. Posts also describe empty cards, summaries that disappear, and a new default harness that some cannot opt out of.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-16, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “its also just become more opaque than before. earlier it would show the thinking steps which were very useful for me. now it just shows "thinking".” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x7f8pf/copilot_is_slow_and_doing_a_terrible_job_today/ph44lz4/)
  - 2026-10-16, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “yeah, the old one was way better. directly focus the search, all models visible with a single click. the only thing i might have changed is to show the favorites also in the "full list". but who asked for this revamp, that does everything worse?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x798cg/new_model_picker_is_not_good/ph3mna5/)

### Head to head

- **GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code**: GitHub Copilot ahead in 30 of 84 posts that pick a side, 30 even. Of 114 posts judging both, Claude Code leads 54 to 30. Users who favour Claude Code cite better results and more usage per plan. Some say companies stay on Copilot because of Microsoft contracts. Copilot's supporters point to its granular diffs.
  - 2026-10-07, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “see some of my posts too. my 2p is ghcp is absolutely miles miles behind claude code but most enterprises are stuck due to their longer term relationships with microsoft” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wzvbj9/same_prompt_same_model_opus_55_ultra_claude_code/peg4cs9/)
  - 2026-10-04, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “the granular diff is literally the only reason i use copilot over claude code” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxectl/new_updated_ui_for_vscode_github_copilot_screws/pdwcb7f/)
- **GitHub Copilot vs OpenAI Codex**: GitHub Copilot ahead in 33 of 83 posts that pick a side, 48 even. Of 131 posts that judge both, Codex is ahead in 50 and Copilot in 33. Users who favour Codex cite subsidized plans with more usage. In Codex's own subreddit, Copilot leads 17 to 9. Some posts say the same models perform better on Copilot.
  - 2026-10-01, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “harness is still fine but yeah usage is basically 10x less than you can get with either claude or codex” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wut85y/why_use_github_copilot_after_the_nerf/pd61cq2/)
  - 2026-10-05, r/codex (Reddit): “they can fix their lobotomized models first. luna high and sol 6.1 have been absolute trash on codex. (compared to the same models on copilot)” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wxq5ng/new_tibo_post/pdzvwtt/)

### What would move its score

Rule: For each area where an agent's customer love is below the category norm: the Feedback Score and rank it would have if that one area were at the norm (0.5) and everything else stayed the same, computed with the same formula as the ranking. An area's pull follows its weight, so an area many users of the category rate moves the score more than one they rarely mention.

| Area at the category norm | Feedback Score | Change | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doing the work | 50.1 | +1.9 | 8th of 17 |
| Interface and sessions | 48.4 | +0.3 | 9th of 17 |
| Instructing and context | 48.2 | +0.1 | 9th of 17 |

Quality of work is the only area that moves the Feedback Score much. Bringing it to the category norm would lift the score from 48.1 to 50.1 (+1.9) and the rank from 9th to 8th. Bringing the interface to the norm adds 0.3, and instructions and context adds 0.1. Neither changes the rank.

### Six weeks

Weekly users peaked at 666 in the week of September 28, when Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol were released. They fell to 292 in the last week, rank 10th, as category users fell to 26,760. Share of voice stayed between 1% and 2%.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 285 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Exclude specific models from auto routing

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-15, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i'm on the enterprise plan. gpt-5.3-codex is the default fallback model, but its api pricing is over 10 times that of luna, and it performs worse. honestly, this makes me not want to use auto. we still can't disable a model that's over a year old. how does that benefit users?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x6iwuq/please_add_an_option_to_disable_gpt53codex/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-12, @GitHubCopilot (X): “dear @code: if i select "auto" and "intelligence" for my @githubcopilot model, i do not want it choosing baby luna (especially when i'm asking for a gigantic code review). i would choose "efficiency" if i wanted luna-class models. please and thank you! @pierceboggan” [source](https://twitter.com/40277793/status/2109674238181605717)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-07, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “it chooses gpt 6 luna (i dont even see the reasoning effort) and made multiple stupid mistakes for me in more complicated tasks too, so idk what to say about this. i legit cannot get it to not choose luna sometimes” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wubi60/hydrafusion_in_now_available_in_vs_code_and_the/peedwev/)

### 2. Per-file and per-hunk accept/reject of changes

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-05, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “shame! shame! i want keep and remove buttons or will change my ai agents” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxectl/new_updated_ui_for_vscode_github_copilot_screws/pe00mun/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-05, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “this is awful, i don't even see the button to keep or discard changes” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxectl/new_updated_ui_for_vscode_github_copilot_screws/pdxmhiu/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-04, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “my copilot is not showing diffs or the keep/undo buttons when i use it to edit files” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wxspnp/my_copilot_is_not_showing_diffs_or_the_keepundo/)

### 3. Honor manually selected model

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-03, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “it's terrible. and i don't even have the option to change to another model.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1uwkc1m/we_want_your_feedback_how_is_maicode1flash_in/pdohh4w/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-24, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “gpt-6 luna and sol is all that most people need. that said, let the user choose as long as they are capped on usage” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wovttn/have_you_disabled_haiku/pbtdn9k/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-14, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “clearly selected a local endpoint in business byok plan but it keeps switching over to expensive af models that i don't need like gemini 3.7 flash or sonnet 5 on the first message no matter which model i select. wastes so many credits and prevents me from getting my work done!” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wfprls/anyone_have_issues_with_forced_autorouting/)

### 4. More open-weight models

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-27, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “hook up deepseek v4.1 flash and glm 5.3 flash throught their respective providers (deepseek and [z.ai]([link]) )” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wr5io2/best_cheaper_alternative/pcf26a1/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-02, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “still waiting for glm, deepseek... microsoft will never add them dont they” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1w4uelv/claude_fable_51_is_generally_available_in_github/p7brds9/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-17, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i’ve been using luna a bunch and it is pretty good. but it does some stupid things and is at times too eager when it should elevate issues, things that my local qwen 3.8 27b / 3.6 35b a3b instances do without problem. k2.7c is better with that in my context. it would be nice to see glm or deepseek models on ghcp” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wi6ux3/kimi_27_code_deprecation_wo_similar_alternative/padzmoy/)

### 5. Subagent token usage visibility

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-12, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “for the subagent cost: someone simply replaced the tooltip that contained the cost in aic with some "model data" (like thinking effort, context size). just add the line back, the info must be there already.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x2b0pr/the_harness_is_absolute_trash/pfge00z/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “that 200 aic jump with zero live visibility is exactly the kind of thing that makes you not trust the harness to run autonomously. upvoted the issue, though honestly the broader problem is that subagent cost should be a first-class metric, not something you discover after the damage is done. have you found any workaround in the interim, or are you just manually capping subagent spawns to limit the blast radius?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x08met/visibility_over_subagent_aic_spending/pejha1y/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-07, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i just had a luna session spawn a sonnet explore subagent under the vs code local harness, which ended up wasting (literally) 200 aic. as far as i understand, there is currently no way to see the live subagent's aic spending, you just see the jump once it is done. happy to be proven wrong tho! i have opened [[link] in case you want to upvote or contribute to that feature request, even with a solution to close it.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x08met/visibility_over_subagent_aic_spending/)

### 6. More model options in catalog

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “microsoft ai, you should one or two models from them in your model selector.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wag6w6/breaking_msft_has_stopped_providing_claude_models/p8it5ve/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-03, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@patloeber tell @githubcopilot to get off their tush and add it to the supported models list!” [source](https://twitter.com/204380091/status/2095498501576691930)

### 7. Per-subagent model selection

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-29, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “i just used gpt 6 sol to write out a plan and intended to hand it off to luna for execution. meanwhile sol decided it was a good idea to launch another sol subagent to execute said plan. now i am wondering is there a way to set a default model for subagents? i have only found a setting to set a model for plan mode in vs code” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wtbmbu/how_to_set_default_subagent_model/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-10, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “[link] as you can see in the image gpt 5.6 luna started using sonnet 5 as a sub agent causing massive credit waste. i don't think models should be able to select a more expensive model in this situation and has lead me to disable sub agents all together. have i missed a setting somewhere that has suddenly caused this issue?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wcefit/copilot_using_more_expensive_models_for_sub_agent/)

### 8. Organization-scale BYOK deployment via SSO

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-12, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@alexrouteapi @orenme @iambipinpaul @github @githubcopilot i just need per-user api keys managed through sso and proper model configuration publishing” [source](https://twitter.com/161137627/status/2109600838226219051)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-10, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@orenme @awakecoding @github @githubcopilot having server-side byok will help in all these scenarios, along with using the setting byok once and using it on all hosts (vs code, vs, cli, app, mobile, web, and more).” [source](https://twitter.com/224418248/status/2108872332962087080)

### 9. Choose the orchestrator model

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-06, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “agree! i want to be able to select the primary orchestrator. i don’t know what model is doing the driving. otherwise, i love hydrafusion. but i want to use astra or opus 5.5 as my driving model” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wzbbnt/copilot_hydrafusion_needs_a_model_selector_to_be/pea87h8/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-06, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “thank you so much for your feedback and sharing insights. could you elaborate a bit more what you mean by: i would love to be able to select or set a steering preference. as we are currently working on this, i would love to see what we can do here for the next iteration. overall, the team is currently working on exposing a new model mix for hydrafusion, so moving forward cheaper models will be considered as well” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wzbbnt/copilot_hydrafusion_needs_a_model_selector_to_be/pea60lm/)

### 10. Confirmation before risky actions

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-08, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “this sucks so much, man. the model just went berserk on my project without asking first.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x0lrqd/no_more_ask_or_plan_mode_available_agent_mode_is/pen5sf5/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-02, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “but that's what i'm saying, manual sounds like what it was doing was before this latest update. that's what i would want. now unless i have it on allow all, it asks to allow every file edit. i can't even approve that command anymore, there's no button to do it. assisted errors immediately that it can't figure out whether editing a file should be approved. 😂” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1wvfmpt/copilot_update_asks_permission_for_every_file_edit/pdbkk25/)

### 11. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash model support

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-10, @GitHubCopilot (X): “@tylerleonhardt @githubcopilot @code add deepseek v4.1 to your models. your always lagging behind! 😒😔” [source](https://twitter.com/1583878322890711043/status/2098100231317696564)

### 12. Faster addition of newly released models

- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-14, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “would you believe we also don't have 3.8 flash enabled either. we spend all this money on ai but don't even get to use the latest models” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x56rzd/gemini_4_argon_in_github_copilot/pgodnb7/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-10-13, r/GithubCopilot (Reddit): “it's not only available in 1st party oai products, it's available on openrouter and the oai's api. will it come to copilot?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GithubCopilot/comments/1x4yjtp/will_copilot_ever_get_gpt61_sol_ultrafast/)
- GitHub Copilot, 2026-09-05, r/codex (Reddit): “ok ok i get it astra is great. we have 4000 credits per month on our corporate github copilot ($40 worth), so i am more looking forward to luna 6. is this in the plans?” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1w7qdmh/gpt6_astra_official_release/p7x8aa1/)
