## The brief

Written by large language models from this page's numbers and the posts it quotes, then checked: every number in the text is in the build. Interpretation, not measurement.

OpenClaw gives users a system they own and can shape to how they work. The cost is upkeep: users say setup is hard and updates break setups that were working. People choose it for control, where it ranks 2nd of 7, and for the apps and devices it can reach. Updates are 14% of what its users rate, 4.8 times the rate for other agents, and complaints there outnumber praise. Setup draws the same kind of complaint. It trails each agent users most often compare it with. Against Hermes Agent, Hermes comes out ahead in 160 posts and OpenClaw in 33.

### Why people choose it

- **You can shape it to how you work** ([Control over it](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/control.md)). 1.8×: 13% of what users rate, 1.8× the rate for other agents. Ranks 2nd of 7 on “Control over it”. Users say OpenClaw lets them do nearly anything. They switch models, build their own features and workflows, and run the whole setup on their own servers. Some say that after this freedom, more locked-down agents feel frustrating.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-12, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@yeemio yeah i feel the same way haha. after experiencing how much freedom openclaw gives you, going back to a more restricted environment feels kinda frustrating. i guess once you get used to that level of control, it's hard to go back 😂” [source](https://twitter.com/1450838426941493257/status/2109546098172080264)
  - 2026-10-11, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@aliteracy not fried at all, it's actually making a comeback. the consumer apps are easier to start with, but openclaw is still where you go when you want to own the whole setup.” [source](https://twitter.com/1627981083022073857/status/2109134923944874228)
- **It connects to the apps and devices you use** ([Connecting apps and devices](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/connect.md)). 2nd: of 7 on “Connecting apps and devices”. 7% of what users rate. Posts describe OpenClaw linking messaging apps to each other, controlling home TVs, running custom hardware and printing to local printers through MCP servers and APIs. Users say their best results come from chaining it to other apps and data sources.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-10, @openclaw (X): “@heyneighbor @steipete @openclaw i have found that my best openclaw experiences are due to the connectivity with other applications and data sources. it’s like a daisy chain of compounding possibility” [source](https://twitter.com/1292623436/status/2108735408766865469)
  - 2026-10-06, @openclaw (X): “when people ask “but what can @openclaw /@nousresearch hermes do that grokbot, dots, muse can’t?” the answer is making your bluetooth printer print. period.” [source](https://twitter.com/198437482/status/2107616018558591414)
- **Your data stays on hardware you control** ([Privacy and safety](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/trust.md)). 2nd: of 6 on “Privacy and safety”. 5% of what users rate. Users run it on their own machines or behind a proxy, and they set permissions for each agent. They say they share personal context more comfortably when they decide what leaves the device.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-18, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@robinsinghvi mostly somora, alongside openclaw and hermes, running on local models. i've tried a few hosted assistants and liked them, but i'm more comfortable sharing personal context when i control the hardware and what gets sent outside.” [source](https://twitter.com/1570393386/status/2111929581439521246)
  - 2026-10-09, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@elonmusk @stepango @bot i think we should be able to isolate access per bot. i want a work bought that can access certain things that other bots shouldn’t access. with openclaw, i can set permissions and guardrails around each agent.” [source](https://twitter.com/14278253/status/2108366532820533533)

### Why people leave

- **Updates often break working setups** ([Updates improve it, not break it](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/vendor.updates.md)). 4.8×: 14% of what users rate, 4.8× the rate for other agents. Ranks 5th of 5 on “Updates improve it, not break it”. Users describe gateways that will not start after an upgrade, upgrades that hang, and features that regress from one release to the next. Some stay on old versions. Others say they spend whole days repairing things after each release.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-16, r/openclaw (Reddit): “you guys release new updates every market day. just fix everything and release in one go! constantly updating breaks many things. we end up spending every day fixing openclaw to work, rather than making openclaw agents work for us.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/openclaw/comments/1x75nn8/openclaw_v2026104_patch_release_is_out_with/ph1elj1/)
  - 2026-10-16, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw i love using openclaw when it works but man, the update anxiety is real having to dedicate a day to fix the the fixes after the update that fixed the previous fixes 😅” [source](https://twitter.com/1387740075316977667/status/2111030956983562362)
- **Setup and upkeep take too much work** ([Quick, easy setup](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/access.setup.md)). 4.2×: 13% of what users rate, 4.2× the rate for other agents. Ranks 7th of 7 on “Quick, easy setup”. Users describe long stretches of configuration before OpenClaw is useful, followed by constant babysitting. Several say they dropped it for agents that need less fiddling.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-17, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i tried openclaw, then dropped it. too much setup, no clear use case. hermes clicked when i found a simple handoff: tag it in jira before leaving work, then return to progress and results in the same issue the next morning. how that grew into an ai workflow: [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/467147533/status/2111411865893175430)
  - 2026-10-13, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i'm sorry for cheating on dots, and i also feel that openclaw really requires a lot of maintenance.” [source](https://twitter.com/17895243/status/2109833429902926050)
- **Long-running work is hard to keep reliable** ([Working on its own](https://feedbackbench.com/criteria/auto.md)). 7th: of 8 on “Working on its own”. 17% of what users rate. Posts describe memory that is inconsistent, daily checks that do not run reliably, and a runtime that uses a lot of RAM on servers. Users say they keep resetting gateways and pruning services to keep it running.
  Evidence:
  - 2026-10-18, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “the grokbot harness is simply outstanding… it just works. connectors, skills and mcp ecosystem all well supported. my largest gripe with openclaw was its poor reliability and consistency of responses. memory was all over the place - just doesn’t seem an issue here at all” [source](https://twitter.com/512992788/status/2111764689696776593)
  - 2026-10-13, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw this week we mapped what the hosting provider bills us for, process by process, across all our instances. the openclaw runtime itself was more than half. a browser was running on every instance, whether anyone was using it or not.” [source](https://twitter.com/970542578/status/2109992602376290777)

### Head to head

- **OpenClaw vs Hermes Agent**: OpenClaw ahead in 33 of 193 posts that pick a side, 138 even. Stability decides it. Of 331 posts that judge both, Hermes Agent comes out ahead in 160 and OpenClaw in 33. Users describe OpenClaw crashing on the same hardware and say they moved their agents to Hermes.
  - 2026-10-16, @openclaw (X): “i have both @nousresearch and @openclaw on my home server. they both are configured to use the same model (different apis). been running them both for about two month now. #hermes is working flawlessly while #openclaw has crashed on my about 5 times now. do better @openclaw” [source](https://twitter.com/2035822553563054080/status/2111125373497053689)
  - 2026-10-17, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i still can't believe how much more stable hermes agent is compared to what openclaw was. is anybody still using openclaw? i'm 90% muse and 10% hermes and muse is probably gaining a bigger share the more i use it.” [source](https://twitter.com/5538162/status/2111300924664623460)
- **OpenClaw vs Grok Bot**: OpenClaw ahead in 30 of 124 posts that pick a side, 31 even. Grok Bot is ahead in 94 posts and OpenClaw in 30, out of 155. Users say Grok Bot needs no fiddling. Those who favour OpenClaw point to its lower cost and to running it at home on open models.
  - 2026-10-17, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@joshmanders @zrymiller @miaai_lab @poteto @dunnbot nice 👍 i tried openclaw and hermes in the past. grok @bot is just one less thing i have to worry about fiddling with. just works.” [source](https://twitter.com/1854008528064724992/status/2111496693011419489)
  - 2026-10-02, OpenAI Dots: é MESMO melhor que o Agente Hermes? (YouTube): “the pow or grokbot is good...too bad it's expensive and you can get the same things with an openclaw at home or a hermes. i leave my open claw on a gaming notebook from 2018 running ubuntu with the internet and the notebook on a ups and i have a good ai that serves for everything” [source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXwqbaZp0x8&lc=UgzGNT3HzM0lyx6WFg94AaABAg)
- **OpenClaw vs Muse**: OpenClaw ahead in 7 of 54 posts that pick a side, 24 even. Muse is ahead in 47 posts and OpenClaw in 7, out of 78. Users describe Muse as a polished, free version that works without configuration.
  - 2026-10-05, @openclaw (X): “the menus, ui, and design quality of @muse are so dang good it’s a polished version of @openclaw that just works and is “free” [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/1756394384655003648/status/2107175149695115492)
  - 2026-10-01, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@steipete @notmisha @muse it works a lot better ngl. i was able to just hop on from a browser with my facebook login and it took days off my workload. quite amazing actually. openclaw was cool but too much configuration” [source](https://twitter.com/22806353/status/2105448522061643851)
- **OpenClaw vs ChatGPT Dots**: OpenClaw ahead in 13 of 34 posts that pick a side, 15 even. This is its closest contest. ChatGPT Dots is ahead in 21 posts and OpenClaw in 13, out of 49. Dots wins on setup time. OpenClaw wins on memory, on configurability and on free local models.
  - 2026-10-09, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “i ditched openclaw for openai's dots, and setup took minutes instead of hours [link] [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/65119912/status/2108361865566806246)
  - 2026-10-14, r/openclaw (Reddit): “first off, you can operate it for free with local models with no limits on which model you use. i was using dots to coordinate testing local models on openclaw and it was great, till it hit the weekly session limit and stoped. so those other services are great and very polished. but not free and not as configurable as openclaw.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/openclaw/comments/1x5q7m6/what_are_openclaw_killer_features_that_grok/pgoh627/)

### What would move its score

Rule: For each area where an agent's customer love is below the category norm: the Feedback Score and rank it would have if that one area were at the norm (0.5) and everything else stayed the same, computed with the same formula as the ranking. An area's pull follows its weight, so an area many users of the category rate moves the score more than one they rarely mention.

| Area at the category norm | Feedback Score | Change | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Getting tasks done | 52.2 | +3.7 | 4th of 9 |
| Running on its own | 49.9 | +1.4 | 5th of 9 |
| Getting access and set up | 49.5 | +1.1 | 5th of 9 |
| Paying for the agent | 49.1 | +0.7 | 5th of 9 |
| Talking to the agent | 48.7 | +0.2 | 5th of 9 |

Getting tasks done would move it most. At the category norm, the Feedback Score would rise from 48.3 to 52.1 and OpenClaw would move to 4th. No other area adds more than 1.4 points, and none lifts it above 5th.

### Six weeks

Weekly users fell from 6,047 in the first week to between 3,046 and 4,423 afterwards. Share of voice fell from 36% to a low of 12%, ending at 15%, while Muse and ChatGPT Dots grew. Rank stayed between 3rd and 5th.

## Top requests

What users ask to add or change, most asked first. 2502 user-weeks ask for something. Requests do not change the Feedback Score. Rule: A separate pass by a large language model reads every counted post and extracts what the user asks the agent or its vendor to add or change, with the criteria it maps to and a short normalised wording; it does not touch the labels or the Feedback Score. A large language model groups the wordings within each criterion (the first criterion the request maps to) into themes, and a second pass merges themes that ask for the same change under different criteria; a merged theme sits under the criterion most of its requests map to, and code counts it once. A theme counts distinct user-weeks that ask for it, per agent; across agents, one user-week per agent. Themes asked in fewer than 2 user-weeks, and requests that share no theme, are not shown. Examples: up to 3 posts per theme from different users, without slurs: whole posts of 60 to 450 characters with at least 8 words beyond handles and links, posts of at most 280 characters first, then the newest.

### 1. Updates that do not break existing setups

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-16, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw @steipete please provide more stable updates; many of us work in live production environments, and every update presents a challenge.” [source](https://twitter.com/1409156514/status/2111107873120158100)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw release updates like apple. they should just work. do that a few times and confidence will return 😎” [source](https://twitter.com/211314407/status/2109524224125866437)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw every upgrade is quite troublesome on the channel side; it would be even better if it were perfectly compatible.” [source](https://twitter.com/1126652197070966785/status/2109460731171369167)

### 2. Simpler, faster setup process

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-11, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw simpler mac setup matters more than it sounds. the first ten minutes decide if someone sticks around” [source](https://twitter.com/1665675488604434434/status/2109348814264078667)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-09, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@lobanovskiy yep same, except i skipped the openclaw craze too much headache to set up 😅 but i’ve been using ai in all my workflows such a game changer.” [source](https://twitter.com/2868527398/status/2108556690270347334)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-09, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@jeffbullas good question. still unclear. i tried openclaw and was in configuration hell for like a week. wasted so much time. claude for analysis/ synthesis is saving me a lot of time. muse as an assistant is getting there.” [source](https://twitter.com/716682742990135296/status/2108355995042975789)

### 3. Use existing AI subscriptions in the agent

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-18, @openclaw (X): “hey @steipete @openclaw, the new configuration changes in @opencode for the api have removed the ability to use the opencode go subscription within openclaw. do you know what we can do? can we no longer connect opencode go models with openclaw? please help! @opencode” [source](https://twitter.com/43194620/status/2111655966538154086)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-17, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@google please allow us to use our google ai pro subscription into hermes and openclaw” [source](https://twitter.com/1982427257387061249/status/2111336897721336162)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-13, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@geminiapp @instacart @opentable @adobe @shopify will pro users ever have access to argon within antigravity? pleaaaase, and if u can authorize openclaw and other orchestrator, it will be awesome 😁” [source](https://twitter.com/1196963349227028480/status/2110124831870193946)

### 4. Higher overall usage allowance per plan

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-05, r/GrokBot (Reddit): “i ran into so many stupid issues with openclaw and then hermes, so i just moved to gb exclusively. i will say the limits are real, but i installed claude and codex so i can have them do my coding for me.” [source](https://www.reddit.com/r/GrokBot/comments/1wyf0sg/gb_hermes/pe2uy9a/)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-04, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@swhotch i ask one thing of my openclaw and i burn through an entire days worth of my chatgp uk plus user account in like, one question. i feel ya 🫂” [source](https://twitter.com/1098628219429896193/status/2106752722909204840)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-01, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “yesterday, i used openclaw too much and hit the limit right away, so i gave up and switched to pro 100, but i should have changed it online for 100 dollars... [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/127426113/status/2105533561252327526)

### 5. Lower overall token and credit consumption

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-10, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “srsly @bot is excellent, didn’t see that coming, and i built my own openclaw variants. if only it wouldn’t eat usage for a week in mere hours! @elonmusk any way you grant credits for bot for small startups?” [source](https://twitter.com/474330389/status/2108866089983819932)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-04, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@kunchenguid feeling this really hard. i'll buy the hardware to run it 24/7 too but rn i have no good options. i've tried openclaw and hermes but mb it was too early or just a skills issue but they're too hard to maintain and the token consumption was crazy high” [source](https://twitter.com/969039065936027648/status/2106735647180685525)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-27, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “today i returned to openclaw and it is updating to the latest version while the assistant still remembers what we were working on last... hermes just wastes tokens, impressive.. the 1.7 trillion tokens of hermes is poor token management and not popularity. [link]” [source](https://twitter.com/342747720/status/2104321697436328238)

### 6. Interoperability between different agents

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-14, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “using tg group for cross-agent communication is not reliable (openclaw is too dumb to follow rules). maybe a better is to use a2a protocol in the backend but show summary in the tg group for human instead.” [source](https://twitter.com/7204712/status/2110279751608811594)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@ralphquintero @paulg nobody wants to use someone else's agent. nobody. amazon needs to allow other agents to use their mcp/platform. everyone will have their own agent, whether personally owned (openclaw/hermes) or some other party (muse, grokbot).” [source](https://twitter.com/809288957011709952/status/2108217054310682893)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-08, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@milindlabs @mausbot_ 100% agree. any chance mausbot can interact with e.g. openclaw or some coding envs like herdr etc? so i can have one interface for all the stuff.” [source](https://twitter.com/2076386152953565184/status/2108121218021007472)

### 7. Stability prioritized over new features

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-01, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@ataiiam i've been using nanoclaw since it came out, hated openclaw. can you tell how dedicated are you to keeping the project up to date but not too bloated? i really would actually pay to have muse like reliability running on my private vps” [source](https://twitter.com/2026239563874877440/status/2105760127185997952)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-29, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@martbln_dev hehe, but please let it be more stable 🙏 are you running openclaw?” [source](https://twitter.com/1242753357623832576/status/2104989546207408389)
- OpenClaw, 2026-09-27, X search: OpenClaw, openclaw.ai (X): “@jun_song openclaw broke all the time. it did feel magical but wasn’t reliable + native ios support isn’t a thing” [source](https://twitter.com/1453819249315639326/status/2104180751927591375)

### 8. Updates that complete without failing

- OpenClaw, 2026-10-16, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw i love openclaw but 10.1~ 10.3 bug making more than bug fux. the workflow need to be rework” [source](https://twitter.com/451119985/status/2111036489668915522)
- OpenClaw, 2026-10-12, @openclaw (X): “@openclaw it is only in 2026.10.5-beta.2. 2. a fix for #168750. activation doctor fails with "database maintenance authority check cannot admit a nested effect" and the update ends state-migrated-no-rollback.” [source](https://twitter.com/1592003170783338498/status/2109684426481303887)
